Beaubourg

Overview

Beaubourg is a puzzle game centered on the industrial architecture of the Centre National d'Art et de Culture Georges-Pompidou in Paris. The narrative follows the management of the building's external technical networks, specifically its iconic color-coded conduit systems. In a conceptual reflection of the actual structure’s "inside-out" design, the player takes on the role of an architect or technician responsible for organizing the flow of resources through the exposed piping that defines the building's exterior.

The game is played on a two-dimensional grid representing a section of the building's facade. The primary objective is to construct continuous paths for red and blue pipes across the screen. These colors correspond to the functional systems of the real-world Beaubourg center, where blue handles climate control and red handles transportation.

The player interacts with the grid by placing or rotating pipe segments. A core mechanical constraint is that pipes of different colors cannot occupy the same tile or cross each other under standard conditions; intersections are only possible through the use of specialized crossover pieces. Success is determined by the player’s ability to navigate the increasingly complex grid while ensuring that both colored networks reach their designated exit points without interruption. The interface utilizes a top-down perspective, displaying the mechanical segments as bold, primary-colored lines against a neutral structural background.
