Overview

The Escapists is a single-player strategy and simulation game set in a series of prisons with increasing levels of security. The player takes the role of an inmate with the ultimate goal of escaping confinement. Each prison follows a strict daily routine that includes roll calls, meals, exercise, and job assignments. While appearing to conform to this schedule, the player must secretly gather resources, plan escape routes, and avoid suspicion from guards and fellow inmates. Progression through the game requires successfully escaping each prison, with later facilities featuring tighter security and more complex layouts.

Gameplay combines sandbox planning with role-playing elements. The inmate can work official prison jobs, such as laundry or kitchen duty, to earn money, and can also take on favors from other prisoners. These requests may involve delivering contraband, starting fights, or causing distractions, rewarding the player with cash or useful items. Money can then be used to buy tools, crafting ingredients, or contraband from other inmates. Crafting allows the creation of essential escape equipment such as shovels, wire cutters, disguises, and weapons.

Stealth and timing are central mechanics. Guards respond to suspicious behavior, contraband checks, and raised heat levels if the player breaks prison rules. Combat can occur with both inmates and guards, using improvised melee weapons or fists, but excessive violence can lead to lockdowns and solitary confinement. If caught, the player risks losing contraband or progress toward escape.

Escapes can be executed in multiple ways depending on the prison’s design, including tunneling beneath walls, cutting through fences, disguising oneself as a guard, or inciting riots as cover. Each facility encourages experimentation with different approaches, making no two escapes identical.

On some platforms, The Escapists also includes the ability to create and share custom prisons through the online modding communities (for example, Steam Workshop), giving players access to community-made challenges or the opportunity to design their own layouts.
