Pineapple 2000

Overview

Experience the fledgling days of a brand new game development studio through this once lost tech demo! Pineapple 2000 is a conversion of Space Invaders for the Atari 2600 created by Radio F Software as a learning exercise in developing for the console. Pineapple 2000 was created in 2004 in an effort for Radio F Software to branch out after their wildly successful AI mod for Robot Arena 2. (See also: The RFS AI Pack v2.0 for Robot Arena 2 on itch.io)

Functionally the game is near identical to Space Invaders as the majority of its code was borrowed from that game for the purposes of experimentation. In Atari homebrew circles this is what is known as a "hack" and they are very common among new developers. Pineapple 2000 saw limited release on AtariAge.com where it was given an extremely short run as a physical cartridge for those interested in collecting oddities for the console. No additional cartridges have been made in the 20 years since and there are currently no plans to ever have more of them made again making the copies of Pineapple 2000 that are floating around out there extremely rare.

Radio F Software would soon begin a number of projects for the Atari 2600 notably the tongue-in-cheek parody game The Ohio Weedeater Mishap which was worked on for several months but ultimately never released. Despite a strong start in 2004 Pineapple 2000 would end up being Radio F Software's sole release for the Atari 2600 for two decades until their unfinished game Gator Love was picked up and finished by Twilight Foundry and released by Gator Company in February 2024.
