Rally Racers

Overview

Rally Racers is a single player game in which the player drives a car around a track collecting flags and avoiding hazards. This is, by default, a keyboard controlled game which uses just the arrow keys to steer but a joystick can optionally be used.

The name doesn't describe the game accurately because this is not a racing game, nor has it anything to do with rallying. The tracks are not race tracks as such, they are mazes and within each maze there are ten yellow flags to collect. The cars are controlled much like the character in Pac-Man, i.e. once they start moving they will keep moving in that direction until they hit something or another arrow key is pressed.

The player starts the game with five cars and bonus cars are awarded for every 30,000 points scored. Cars can be lost by hitting boulders and enemy cars while hazards such as oil slicks and orange pylons cause the car to lose fuel. Fuel is important because when it is used up the player's car 'coasts' and at such a slow speed avoiding enemy cars is very hard. The enemy cars come in four colours, each colour travels at a different speed.

The player must complete each maze three times before they can progress to the next, and must complete twenty-five mazes to beat the game. Points are scored for every flag captured the first flag is worth 100 points the second flag is worth 200 points the third is worth 300 points e.t.c. and bonus points are scored for capturing special flags, amount of fuel remaining at the end of a stage.
