Overview
The Ouroboros King is a board game that blends chess mechanics with roguelike progression. Follow King Octavius as he campaigns to free his people from a sinister organization known as the Coven. The world's history and background lore unfold through brief dialogues between encounters and text descriptions attached to discovered pieces, relics, and items.
Players navigate a procedurally generated map of branching paths across three stages containing battles, shops, and events. Armies are built by recruiting classic chess pieces and original units, such as the Blade Dancer, Bowman, and Reaper, which possess distinct movement and attack patterns.
Combat occurs on a grid where the player and the artificial intelligence alternate moving a single piece per turn. The objective is to capture the enemy king rather than achieving a formal checkmate. Passive relics modify unit behaviors, and consumable items provide temporary advantages during matches. A limited rewind mechanic allows the undoing of previous moves. Defeating the final boss of the third stage completes a run, unlocking incremental difficulty modifiers for subsequent attempts.
