Darkness of Space

Overview

"Darkness of Space is a first-person sci-fi action game released as freeware for MS-DOS in 1997. The game is historically notable as one of the few surviving projects built using the specialized 'Programmers' edition of the Pie in the Sky Software 3D Game Creation System (3DGCS) engine. Utilizing the engine's pseudo-3D raycasted environment capabilities, the title plunges players into a series of claustrophobic, grid-based labyrinthine corridors located inside a derelict deep-space outpost.Gameplay relies on classic 90s first-person shooter conventions, tasking players with collecting keycards, managing limited ammunition supplies, and hunting down hostile alien forces or rogue defense systems lurking in the shadows. Lacking complex verticality due to engine limitations, Darkness of Space heavily leverages dark texture palettes, flashing wall monitors, and ambient PC speaker audio to establish an eerie, low-budget survival-horror atmosphere across its flat-plan levels."
