Overview
Chance is a single-player, electro-mechanical pinball machine released in 1974 by Playmatic, a prominent arcade manufacturer based in Barcelona, Spain. Moving away from the generic clones common in the early European market, Playmatic embraced an original, mystical theme centered around magic and witchcraft. The game is memorable for its mechanical backbox animation.
The playfield layout of Chance offers a dynamic, standard-sized setup packed with tactical scoring areas. It is built with two flippers, three pop bumpers, two slingshots, and a central up-post between the flippers to help players save draining balls. Aiming across the board reveals nine standup targets, two kick-out holes, a rollover button, and a right-side drop lane integrated with a ball return gate.
In the digital pinball community, recreations of this table for Visual Pinball X are incorrectly listed as having been released in 1971. Other online sources such as Pinside, Kineticist and the Internet Pinball Database (IPDB) unanimously place the table as 1974.
In 1978 Playmatic released a second pinball machine called Chance. That machine is a different, solid-state game for four players with a fortune-telling theme.
