Overview
Might and Magic for the NEC TurboGrafx-CD is a reworked adaptation that introduces a defined lead character and a more cinematic setup uncommon to Western RPGs of the time. The game begins with a new animated prologue centered on Amuru, a paladin whose ship is destroyed by a centaur’s magic. Rescued by an aged cleric, Amuru soon gathers a group of companions and sets out to uncover the mystery of the Inner Sanctum. The party’s quest unfolds across the land of VARN, blending exploration and mythic undertones, while the individual motives of Amuru’s companions remain obscure.
Unlike the computer versions, the TurboGrafx-CD release removes character creation. The player commands six preset adventurers, each with a portrait, class, and alignment. Exploration is conducted from a first-person view, moving through towns, dungeons, and wilderness areas laid out on a grid. Combat is turn-based, with large groups of enemies sometimes appearing in battle.
This version expands the original structure with added side quests, new encounters, and redesigned areas intended to appeal to the Japanese console audience. While the mechanics still follow the Western RPG tradition of free exploration and open progression, the presentation draws heavily on Japanese design, with new hand-drawn character art, anime-style visuals, and CD-quality music and voice acting.
