Chopper I is a vertical scrolling shoot-em-up consisting of six stages, which are repeated once. You pilot a military helicopter, and must make your way through enemy controlled territory fighting airborne, land and sea based enemies to fight and destroy an end of stage boss. Your helicopter has two types of weapon. The primary weapon is a forwards facing gun with unlimited ammunition fired with one button. The secondary weapon is a single-use attack weapon fired with a second button. Larger enemy helicopters can carry power-ups for these weapons, or secondary attacks. Power-ups with L extend range, and P improves the power of the primary weapon. There are other power-ups which improve rate of fire, and add up to two homing missiles to the primary attack. The secondary attacks are of three types. Napalm bombs summon air support and causes damage and remove bullets over the entire screen. Barrier attack forms a flame around the chopper, shielding it from attack. Explosives launch a large bomb towards the top of the screen. Each time a secondary attack is called, it is used up. Up to four secondary attacks can be carried at one time for later use (although extra attacks still count for an end of level bonus). The six stages are all modern day military in theme, although some stages are based around water, jungle, caves. Many stages have walled or mountainous areas which restrict your movement and bullets, but not those of the enemy. Following each stage is a cut-scene showing your chopper landing, and your superior officer encouraging you to complete the next stage.
