Magic 2014 is a trading card game based on the physical game Magic: The Gathering. The basic gist is that players participate in turn-based combat in which each opponent plays out cards from the deck (a combination of playing cards). Those cards either generate mana (there are five kind of manas) or summons (require mana to play out) which have different abilities. The goal is to reduce the opponent's life points to zero. During the campaign, the player helps out a planeswalker named Chandra Nalaar who chases evil wizards through the multiverse. From a gameplay perspective, it is a series of fights against specialised enemies which over time unlocks ten decks. Other available single-player modes are challenges, the new sealed mode and quick matches against the AI. Multiplayer consists of ranked matches or two-against-two matches with up to four human players (the latter is a singleplayer mode in the mobile versions). In the sealed mode, the game gives out random booster packs which can be used to build a deck - two decks can be built for free; more booster packs are available via micro transactions. There is also an extra campaign to try out the new deck, but it can also be used in multiplayer. Besides this mode and additional cards, there are no differences to the predecessor. The mobile versions are distributed for free, but only include a part of the content (three decks, a part of the singleplayer campaign, sealed mode and a planeswalker duel). The rest of the content has to be unlocked with a micro-transaction.
