Overview
Hit the Ice is a 3-on-3 Ice Hockey game and a port of the Midway-developed arcade game of the same name. Like other Midway arcade sports titles, such as NBA Jam and NFL Blitz, Hit the Ice is an over-the-top and exaggerated version of the sport.
The NES port features 4-player simultaneous play (with the NES Four Score or NES Sattelite), and it has an RPG-like quest mode where the player travels the overworld and battles other hockey teams in randomly-occuring games. Quest mode was unique to the NES port, and it doesn't appear in any other version of the game.
The game was briefly reviewed in Nintendo Power Volume 47 and was scheduled for release in April 1993. Conversely, it was reviewed again in the next issue and slated for a May 1993 release. It then received a full review in Volume 49. Ultimately, the game was never officially published.
In 2002 an early prototype of the game was dumped. Later a finished rom that was approved for manufacturing was found as part of the 2020 Nintendo leak.
