Overview
Lock On is a side-scrolling shooter developed and published by Philko in 1991
The game is similar to Carrier Air Wing from Capcom.
Trivia:
Lock-On usually ran on motherboards cloned from Sega System 16B hardware. The Lock-On game program utilized some assets from Capcom arcade games such as U.N. Squadron and Carrier Air Wing. Philko Corporation (later known as On-Gok) was famous (or infamous) for using cloned or re-purposed Capcom & Sega arcade hardware as the basis for their arcade games.
The software house and possibly a specific representative, Yi Banghak, was rumored to be indicted by the Seoul District Prosecutors' Office (on behest of Taito, Konami, and Capcom) for alleged software and hardware bootlegging around September of 1989. The charges were related to the duplication of Capcom & Sega hardware and the unauthorized utilization of software assets. A 2 or 3 year prison sentence was suspended. There were fines of around 10,000,000 Won.
Consequently, all illegal arcade boards and ROMs were ordered to be seized and destroyed. However, many escaped destruction leading to the unique software being dumped years later.
