Overview
Aqua Polis SOS is a fixed screen arcade game similar to Lunar Rescue . The undersea city is under attack, and its citizens need to be rescued. You control a submersible that is deployed from a ship, and must descend to the city of Aquapolis, rescue someone, and return to the ship.
On your descent to the city, you must dodge sea-creatures including several forms of randomly floating jellyfish, whose stinging tentacles will cause the loss of a submersible. There is also a giant sea-horse which will hold your vessel motionless for a few seconds once it is captured. You can activate some jets to slow your descent to help avoid these obstacles, but this uses fuel. At the bottom of the screen, you must then land on one of the buildings and wait for a refugee to board.
After collecting a refugee, you must return to your ship at the surface. On the ascent, you can fire missiles to clear the path of obstacles. Returning to the surface without the ship nearby will cause you to lose a life, perhaps due to hyperbaric decompression. During both ascent and descent, the city is beset by missiles. You can control the opening and closing of a laser defence barrier to defend the buildings, but the shield needs to be open to allow your submersible to enter. Any missile able to bypass the shield may take out one of the city buildings.
Each level of the game requires you to rescue five people from the city. Subsequent levels are made more difficult by increasing the number of jellyfish. Any buildings that are destroyed in earlier levels are not regenerated. The game ends when you run out of submersibles or all of the city buildings are destroyed.
