Overview
Mashou no Yakata Gabalin is an adaptation of the 1986 American horror–comedy film House. It follows the story of Roger Cobb, a writer and Vietnam War veteran who returns to his late aunt’s mansion in search of his missing son, Jimmy. The house is overtaken by supernatural forces tied to Roger’s past, drawing him into a maze of shifting rooms, hidden passages, and hostile creatures.
Players explore eight stages of the mansion and the mysterious dimension connected to it, alternating between indoor dungeon-style navigation and mid-stage combat sequences set during Roger’s wartime memories. Each room may contain monsters, keys, items, traps, or warp holes that move the player forward or backward through the sprawling layout. Collectible crystal balls provide clues needed to unveil a concealed final area of the game.
Roger can acquire a variety of weapons ranging from ranged firearms to special short-range tools along with support items such as lamps, sunglasses, and protective charms. Many foes are visible, while others require specific items to reveal. Boss encounters test the player’s ability to identify vulnerable targets, manage limited resources, and exploit each weapon’s unique properties.
To progress, players must locate hidden items, navigate invisible warp points, survive Vietnam flashback battles, defeat the major supernatural entities occupying each stage, and ultimately confront the vengeful spirit known as Big Ben.
