Overview
Released by Stern Pinball in February 2009, 24 is a fast-paced solid-state pinball machine based on the hit Fox television series starring Kiefer Sutherland. Designed by Steve Ritchie, the game captures the atmosphere of the show where "every second counts". The cabinet is the first North American Stern release to feature a red LED dot-matrix display, complementing the blue and sepia artwork showcasing Jack Bauer and Chloe O'Brian.
The playfield has interactive toys and features designed to pull players into the plot of the show. Key features include an exploding Safe House that flips down to reveal miniature army men, a hidden Sniper lane that opens to uncover a bullet-spraying terrorist, and a Suitcase Nuke that acts as a physical three-ball lock mechanism.
Gameplay revolves around completing various multi-ball modes and missions to advance towards the ultimate wizard mode, Master Agent. To score massive points, players must balance the game's four core achievement folders, spell out CTU on the rollover lanes for bonus multipliers, and hit the CELL lanes for random mystery awards. The audio is driven by a custom sound package by Ken Hale and original voice acting from Mary Lynn Rajskub (Chloe) mixed with show callouts from Jack Bauer himself.
Launched during the peak of the global financial crisis in early 2009, only 1,200 units were produced, a relatively limited number compared to other Stern machines based on licensed properties. Early on, the game faced a critical reception from some casual players who found its open-center playfield layout unconventional. However, many players now agree that 24 is heavily underrated, specifically praising its deep ruleset, fast-flowing geometry, and its viability for competiutive tournament play.
