Overview

A videogame adaption of the strategy board game The Settlers of Catan. Four men (Marco Polo, Sindbad, Columbus, and Magellan) compete with each other while trying to settle the isle of Catan. The isle of Catan is made up of several hexagons with most hexagons producing a resource such as bricks, wool, and grain. Players build settlements at the connecting intersections of these hexagons in order to gather the resources they produce. Players can either trade these resources (with each other or trade them at a port or to the bank if they are looking to acquire a particular resource) or if they have the correct amount of a combination of resources, they can trade them in to build a road, settlement, or city. These resources can also be traded in for a random development card such as a soldier card, a year of plenty card, and even a victory point card. The game ends when one of the players reaches the agreed upon victory point total. Victory points are earned in various ways such as building cities, building the longest road, having the biggest army, and getting the aforementioned victory point card. Catan lets the player alter several rules such as how many victory points are needed to win the game and whether the dice rolls are decided totally by a random number generator or have them come out closer to their normal odds as they would in reality. The game also offers three graphically different boards, the Kosmos, Mayfair, and the 3D edition. There is also an interactive in game tutorial mode to teach new players how to play.
