Dai Senryaku VII: Modern Military Tactics

Dai Senryaku VII: Modern Military Tactics

Microsoft Xbox - Released

Dai Senryaku VII: Modern Military Tactics is a Turn Based Strategy game (TBS). The game has a generic story line, in that the player is not referred to as a specific country, but as a color in Mission Mode. The game allows the player to fight over several different maps with different objectives choosing from several hundred units. The title is multiplayer, up to 4 people and has a map editor. The player can build, disband, and join units, and save units that have gained experience at the end of battle. Everything from submarines, numerous aircraft, naval ships, apc's, and infantry are available to the player for use in the game. In Free Play mode, the player can choose between several countries, including the USA, Israel, Germany, China, Japan, and more. The player can only create units during a game that are associated with that specific country. In addition to keeping track of the fuel supply, the player must also gain funds by taking over cities to support the army, as well as supply the vehicles with weapons and fuel. The game also has well over 70 maps to play and some that are based on real world situations.

Desert Commander

Desert Commander

Nintendo Entertainment System - Released - April 28, 1988

The player's force consists of nine different types of units and one headquarters unit (which is a unit by itself and also can be used to attack). Each scenario gives a different set number of units to use, which the player can mix and match between the different typese without going over that limit. When in a one-player game, the second controller can be used to modify the CPU forces. When playing against the CPU, the computer will be given a different ratio of units to command than the player. On the easiest scenario both the player and the CPU have the same amount of units, on all others the CPU will have more than the player. There is no variance in artificial intelligence, so the only thing that makes the later maps harder is the larger number of units the CPU has. The game is turn-based with no time limit. The object of the game is to destroy the enemy's headquarters unit. The player that does so first wins. Units have different mobility range, which varies according to the unit type and (except for aircraft) the terrain. They also have different shooting range, though this is fixed and not depends of the terrain. All unit types have limited ammunition and fuel. In order to replenish them the player must land them at the appropiate buildings; for example, all aircraft must stop at an airport in order to recharge their fuel and ammo supply. A certain unit is particularly strong or weak against a particular opponent, performing average against every other unit types.

Players can die by being shot, falling into water (by drowning), being blown up by a land mine, and being run over by a tank. Players are in possession of machine gun and can use dynamite as a way to attack the enemies. A strict time limit of 24 hours (five real-time minutes) is used in order to keep the pace of the game relatively brisk. After each round is completed, time is taken off the clock to make things more difficult. Land mines, trenches, and barbed wire similar to those used in the First World War can be seen throughout the levels. The enemy's naval forces are introduced in the game in the second stage along with bridges to go from island to island while tanks start to make their appearance in the third and fourth stages of the game. Watch towers and enemy barracks make their initial appearance in the fifth stage. Roger Rabbit

Roger Rabbit

Nintendo Famicom Disk System - Released - February 16, 1989

Help Roger Rabbit collect hearts in various levels and save Jessica Rabbit while avoiding the dastardly weasels! This was eventually released in the US as Bugs Bunny's Crazy Castle and changed the hearts to carrots and the weasels into various characters from Looney Tunes. This was due to Kemco losing the rights to Roger Rabbit in the US. While presented in a side-scroller format, Roger Rabbit differed from standard side-scrollers such as Super Mario Bros. in that Roger Rabbit did not have a jump function; therefore, only by taking different routes could Roger avoid enemies. Some of the levels had boxing gloves, invincibility potions, safes, crates, flower pots, or ten-pound weights that could be used against the enemies in the game. As a result, the game had a "puzzle-solving" atmosphere. Players score 100 points for every carrot with the last one in each floor giving the player an extra life, 100 points for every enemy defeated using invincibility bottles, 500 points per enemy using boxing glove and 1000 points per enemy that gets hit with heavy objects.

Snoopy's Silly Sports Spectacular!

Snoopy's Silly Sports Spectacular!

Nintendo Entertainment System - Released - September 22, 1988

This video game is a collection of six events that uses various characters from the Peanuts series (Donald Duck in the Japanese version) as opponents. Events include boot throwing (similar to hammer throwing), pizza balancing, and sack racing, among others. In the background, landmarks unique to Italy are shown (i.e., Leaning Tower of Pisa) and the structures using Roman architecture (i.e., the Colosseum) are shown while the player competes at the six events. Playing the "River Jump" event requires impeccable timing; like in the long jump event in the Track & Field video game Dewey (in the Donald Duck version), always pushes the lagging player ahead of the leader, allowing them to catch up. A majority of the game seems to be ported from the Commodore 64 video game Alternative World Games by Gremlin Interactive.

The game world consists of towns and battle areas such as dungeons and the player moves between these on the world map. There are no random battles and the player can always see the enemies and try to avoid combat. The combat is round based and for each round each character can make one action. The player can choose between using a standard attack, using a skill (such a spell or special attack) or using an item (such as potions). Standard attacks are physical while skill attacks can be either physical or magical and require magic points. By attacking the same enemy in succession the player can make combinations and thereby increase the damage inflicted. There's also a break option. Each character has a break gauge and when it is filled up the character can interrupt the combat and launch an extra powerful action. Enemies come from different tribes and for each tribe some weapons and skills are more effective. Each enemy also has an weakness for certain magic elements such as fire, water, earth etc. For each battle the player earns experience and eventually the characters will level up. When levelling up the character earns a merit point which can be used to strengthen abilities. For every ten merit points allocated to an ability, it's level goes up with one. There are ten abilities in total: physical attack, magic attack, accuracy, critical hit rate, physical defense, magic defense, evasion, resistance, speed and reduced usage. Merit points can also be increased from items and equipment. Both equipment and items can be bought in stores in the villages. Equipment can also be made. Don't ignore these changes- use them to alter the battle situation to your advantage! Customize Weapons and Statuses! The characters' weapons are each made up of parts, and by combining these parts, you can change attack strength, not to mention the magic and skills the characters can use. What's more, by reinforcing weapons at a Weapon Shop, you can upgrade the weapons to be much more powerful than they originally were.
