A-Train

A-Train

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1992

Play the part of the head of a railroad company, with the aim of creating a railroad empire, providing a successful mass transit system that will be an inspiration to the rest of the world. Another goal is to provide the impetus for a chosen city to develop. There are a number of different places to set up business each with different layouts and existing houses and businesses. The main money earners are passenger trains, that can be scheduled to pick up passengers at the times of day when the demand is high. However, in the long term you need the city to develop. This requires setting up trains that transport resources to where they are needed. These resources are used to build houses, and other buildings, increasing the number of passengers for commuter trains. As the city develops, new businesses will spring up, such as stadiums, high rise office blocks, and ski resorts. The player may also build own businesses, the success of which will depend on the local population, the presence of competing businesses, and even the changes of the seasons, among other factors. The stock market is also another way of making money. The player may also watch the seasons come and go, with snow visible in winter, and fireworks displays celebrating the New Year.

Ebonstar

Ebonstar

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1988

EbonStar is a shoot 'em up game, developed by Dreamers Guild and published by Microillusions, which was released in Europe in 1988. In contrast to the complexities of their excellent Faery Tale Adventure, Microillusions have now come up with a game of surprising simplicity. Ebonstar takes elements from a few ancient coin-ops and, with a neat vector graphic effect, results in a game rather like those oldies Space Wars and Stella Castle. A single static grid is the playfield throughout the game. Moving at random around the grid is a kind of black hole that swallows up everything in its range. The object is to destroy the void by shooting a bolt of energy straight down the maintenance beam projected by the constantly circling Arch. Up to four players can be on the grid at one time. The players’ aims are twofold: to destroy the hole and also to force each other into its lifeless depths. Each player controls a ship armed with an energy bolt cannon. These repel other ships on impact, and so can be used to push other players around. From the Arch, drone ships and a few other aliens are launched, as well as a few extra weapons that can be caught by the players. Simple games can often be some of the best games, but this is not really the case with Ebonstar. The void moves around with absolutely mesmerizing smoothness, appearing frighteningly how one would imagine a real black hole to be. The explosion has been very well done, too, but Ebonstar plays at far too slow a pace with too little action to create the level of excitement it attempts. Its music, sound effects and most of its graphics are incredibly simple, which coupled with the tedious gameplay and high asking price make this a bit of a non-starter. Inside Ebonstar is a great and fascinating game dying to come out — unfortunately, the black hole seems to have sucked away Microillusions’ usual brilliance.

Fast Action Paq

Windows 3.X - Released - 1993

This collection is a set of four "retro games" based on fondly remembered titles from the 1980's. BOT Your mission is to prevent the Mother CPU from completing its military conquest of the planet. To succeed you'll need to pass through 5 levels of BOT soldiers shooting them at will, including a larger BOT boss at the end of every level. Try to pick up extra grenades, armor protection, and more powerful weaponry along the way to assist you in accomplishing this task. Finding the experimental lightning gun is especially helpful, since it inflicts twice as much damage on enemies as your normal gun. BUBBLE TROUBLE You control a spaceship which you must use to clear the starlanes of subspace vortices (which look like terrestrial water bubbles). You must avoid contact with these vortices and shots by your own weapons, or your energy will slowly drain away. Your ship is armed with two weapons: guns, which are weak but use up little energy; and penetrators, which are strong but use up much more energy. Ship energy is used for thrusting, subspace jumping, and conducting repairs. Shields are used for defense only, and you lose shield power when you come in contact with vortices, bullets, penetrators, saucers, or stationary energy barbs. FLAK ATTACK A horde of robot commandos are attacking your base from the skies above. You control a single gun which you must aim and fire to stop the invaders, but don't run out of ammunition, or your base will certainly be destroyed. When a robot parachutes to the ground, it will walk towards your base and stand beside it. When 4 robots gather on one side of the base, they will destroy it, and the game will be over. The enemy ships include satellites, jets, and helicopters. Satellites fly past at high speeds, but they cannot harm your base directly. Jets fly overhead quickly, and the pilot will eject if you fire enough shots at it. Helicopters drop parachuting robots as they pass. Friendly UN Helicopters will drop extra ammo on your base if you let them fly peacefully overhead. MOLE'S QUEST As Monty the Mole, you must rescue your belongings which the miners have scattered throughout the mines after they destroyed your beautiful home. Jump from platform to platform from the left to the right, grab the belonging, and jump back to the left to safely pass each level. Each time you save ten belongings, you will see an animation of Monty taking the rescued belongings to his new home. Since the mines are covered with radioactive ooze, you must limit your exposure to no more than 5 minutes at a time. That should be sufficient time to rescue each of your belongings. Every time you save a belonging, you will be given a password, so you can continue from the level where you stopped, even if you shut off your computer.

The Jetsons: George Jetson and the Legend of Robotopia

The Jetsons: George Jetson and the Legend of Robotopia

Commodore Amiga - 1989

For anyone who cannot remember. The Jetsons were a futuristic version of the Flintstone family, created by Hanna Barbera Productions. They live in a city above the ground supported by giant poles, and have all the latest hi-tech gadgets, plus plenty that have not even been invented yet. The family live with their dog Astro, Rosie the robot maid and Orbity, a lovable rogue alien pet. And after all this time they are making their debut as a computer game. George Jetson oversleeps. His autowaker has failed him. Already he is late for work, and he has not even got up yet! Rushing around his skypad apartment, he gathers the necessary belongings, and heads to the Spacely building in his flying car. The boss, Mr. Spacely is not amused, and if George can just manage to grovel enough and talk himself out of trouble, he just might keep his job. The price he will have to pay is a trip to Robotopia, a planet inhabited by sentient robots, where Spacely owns a leisure resort. It seems that the entire tourist operation, and Spacely’s investment with it, is threatened by massive pollution, caused by the building of a huge wall round the equator. It seems there is an ethnic problem amongst the robots – the aborigibots are constructing the wall, whilst the immigrant robots just as rapidly dismantle it at the other end. All this activity is giving rise to ash and dust which is spoiling the otherwise idyllic environment of the leisure centre. George’s task is to clear things up before the arrival of an important group of businessmen who are to decide the fate of the tourist attractions in the light of its failing property. All in all, a pushover for the hardened adventurer, but ideal for the beginner who fancies an easy ride for a change. Hopefully here is an offering that will recruit more enthusiasts to adventure playing.

The Legend of Kyrandia: Book 3: Malcolm's Revenge

The Legend of Kyrandia: Book 3: Malcolm's Revenge

Apple Mac OS - Released - 1996

Everyone blamed the jester Malcolm for allegedly turning everyone to stone and killing the King and the Queen of Kyrandia. Their son Brandon eventually turned Malcolm himself into stone. However, a thunderbolt strikes the jester, liberating him from his predicament. Now it's his turn to tell the world his version of the truth, whether in his usual mischievous manner or by becoming a nicer person. Malcolm's Revenge is the third entry in the Legend of Kyrandia series and, like its predecessors, an adventure game focusing on inventory-based puzzles. The basic gameplay is similar to the previous entries: the "smart cursor" is responsible for all the actions in the game - taking, using, talking, etc. During conversations, it is possible to control Malcolm's level of truthfulness as well as his "good" and "bad" attitude. Many puzzles in the game have multiple solutions, though the main story remains unchanged for the most part.
