25 to Life

25 to Life

Windows - Released - January 17, 2006

Developed by veteran studio Avalanche Software, 25 to Life is designed to place the online tactical action of a squad-based shooter in open urban settings that are reminiscent of the latter-day Grand Theft Auto games. Through two parallel perspectives on the same ongoing conflict, 25 to Life offers play as either a law enforcement officer or a streetwise gangsta. In either case, players are equipped with the tools of their respective trades; cops can make use of their superior training with firearms or call for helicopter air support, while gang members can choose from a wider selection of weapons and use civilian hostages as human shields. The game was built with online play in mind, and several multiplayer modes are supported. Players can customize their characters with tattoos, brand-name apparel, and other accessories, then take them online to join others for team deathmatch-style competition. A full-fledged single-player campaign is also included, casting players in the role of an urban up-and-comer who finds trouble on both sides of the thin blue line. The plot of the single-player game was written by P. Frank Williams, famous for his successes as an author, magazine editor, and television producer. The game's soundtrack features selections by rap artists Mos Def, DMX, Ghostface Killah, and others.

Sony Playstation 2 - Released - January 17, 2006

25 To Life is set in the urban inner city jungle where you can choose to be either a law enforcer or law-breaker. In single-player mode, you follow the storyline of young Freeze who is trying to survive in the hood and protect his family, or that of Shaun Calderon, a gang leader who had to escape to Mexico. On the other side of the law, you can play the cop Lester Williams whose department is swamped by corruption. Whatever you choose, the bulk of the game has to walk through the cities, hide behind corners and then bust out and shoot people. As always, you have an arsenal of weapons and moves at your disposal.

Bolt

Sony Playstation 3 - Released - November 18, 2008

Bolt is based on the animated movie of the same name. It stars the dog Bolt, who plays a dog with super powers on a TV show, and his owner Penny. However, the movie does not follow the story of the movie (Bolt starts to believe his super powers are real), but completely takes place within the fictional TV series. The plot is about rescuing Penny's father who was kidnapped by the evil Dr. Calisto. While playing through the 25 missions, the control regularly switches between Bolt and Penny. Bolt's sections are focused on melee combat: Bolt use both super powers (limited by an energy bar) and regular attacks while fighting against multiple enemies at once. Penny's missions are divided between platforming and stealth segments. During the linear platform levels, Penny jumps over gaps and uses her Wheelbar (a pole with wheels on both ends which is used to attach to certain ledges). When stuck, the player can activate Penny's enhanced vision which shows where the Wheelbar needs to be used. During stealth, the goal is to reach certain points unseen. Guards can either be taken out instantly with a stealth attack from behind (the enhanced vision helps by showing the guards' cone of sight) or, if Penny is caught, by solving a quick-time event. Sometimes Penny also has to hack computers with a mini game (which can also be started separately from the main menu): she controls a probe and shoots other drones. The controls use the known dual-stick-shooter style.

Some tracks allows the use of weapons (spy gadgets) to take down competitors. Such weapons include missiles, machine guns, and oil patches. The game modes, which also make up the mission mode's levels, include a regular race mode, a battle race mode that allow the use of spy gadgets, the hunter mode in which the goal is to eliminate waves of enemies, the attack mode in which a fleeing foe must be eliminated before time runs out, a survival mode in which batteries must be collected in order to avoid the game-ending satellite beam, a multiplayer battle arena mode in which the player who scores the most hits wins, and the disruptor mode, a multiplayer base-defense game.

Disney Infinity

Disney Infinity

Nintendo Wii U - Released - August 18, 2013

Disney Infinity is an action-adventure game with physical toys, open world creation and story-driven gameplay. Characters, play-sets and other features are brought into the game using figurines and discs with the included Infinity Base. With the exception of non-humanoid characters, such as those from the Cars series, each character has a double jump and a default set of attacks, as well as an ability unique to each figure. For example, Sulley can roar to scare others whilst Violet can turn invisible. There are two main modes in this game: Play Set and Toy Box. Each play set is essentially a self-contained world with its own gameplay, based on a specific movie or series with recognizable characters and storylines. Characters from one world cannot enter into another world, but players can put any character together in Toy Box mode. Toy Box is a sandbox mode that players can fully customize and explore.

Disney Infinity

Disney Infinity

Sony Playstation 3 - Released - August 18, 2013

Disney Infinity is an action-adventure game similar to the Skylanders franchise where physical figurines are used to interact with the game. The main difference in approach is that Infinity focuses more on character creation and experimentation with the different elements. The starter version of the game comes with the infinity base and three figurines (Sulley, Mr. Incredible and Jack Sparrow). The base consists of two spots to place figurines that are then imported into the game as playable characters. It also has a hexagonal spot to place up to three power discs. These add enhancements to the game such as changes in the terrain, background, new vehicles or weapons. Red ability discs are placed underneath a character on the base as perks, with a maximum of two per character and four in total. Orange toy discs add gadgets and vehicles. Purple customization discs alter the environment and sky. For orange and purple discs only a maximum of three at a time is allowed. Discs are sold separately in series, blind packages and through specific promotions and retailers. The same goes for figurines and Play Sets. There are also rare discs with a hologram in the middle. Characters and environments are based on Disney and Pixar franchises such as Pirates of the Caribbean, The Incredibles, Cars, Toy Story etc. The game can be played in a Play Set and a Toy Box mode. Play Sets are campaigns based around a certain franchise with a number of objectives. Each Play Set is a self-contained world and only characters tied to that specific franchise can be used. Play Sets can be played in split-screen with two players working together. During these campaigns objects and vehicles can be unlocked for the Toy Box mode. Almost every character (except those from non-humanoid series such as Cars) share actions such as a number of attacks and double jumps, but each character also has an ability unique to the figurine. The Toy Box mode removes most restrictions and allows players to create a custom game in an open world environment. Every character, weapon, gadget, vehicle or environment can be mixed. The tools tied to the mode are introduced through a number of in-game tutorials. Multiplayer is also available here and characters can be leveled up and "spins" are earned by going through certain Play Sets.

Disney Infinity 2.0 Edition

Microsoft Xbox 360 - Released - November 4, 2014

Disney Infinity 2.0 is the successor to Disney Infinity and it introduces the second generation of the concept as an entirely new game. Just like the original game it is an action-adventure where players place physical figurines on the infinity base with a USB connection to the system and they are then introduced as characters in the game. The characters level up as they are used and progress is stored in the character itself, meaning they can level up further using them on a different system or on a different location. The figurines that can be purchased are platform independent. There are two large groups of characters: Marvel Super Heroes and Disney Originals. As in the first game it is split up into two game modes. The story part of the game (Play Set mode) is enabled through a play set that resembles a crystal figurine placed on the base. Infinity 2.0 supports multiple, self-contained story modes based on the purchased play sets. The core gameplay is a traditional action platformer. Characters are guided through the game world and have different types of moves. Some characters excel at melee combat, while others rely on ranged attacks. As the characters level up new abilities and attributes become available, assigned through a skill tree. Skills levels can be reset at level 10 and 20 to try different paths. Some characters have special abilities such as flight (Iron Man) or web-swinging (Spider-Man).

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero

Sony Playstation - Released - October 1, 1997

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero is a story-driven fighting game that casts you in the shoes of Sub-Zero, and chronicles a series of events that occurred prior to Mortal Kombat 1. In a storyline that is reminiscent of Looking Glass's Thief, the Lin Kuei assassin/thief is sent to steal an important document; this mission proves to be a test from a mysterious character (which turns out to be MK4's Quan Chi) and who charges you upon retrieval of this object to recover an ancient medallion of untold power. However once you retrieve the medallion, Quan Chi reveals that he actually tricked you, and the medallion is the key to awakening the demonic Shinnok (yup, the same baddie from MK4). You must now become a reluctant hero, as you pursue Quan Chi trough hell itself hoping you get to Shinnok before him. Gameplay wise the game takes the Mortal Kombat familiar 2D fighting environment and turns it into a hybrid fighter/platformer game, where you must travel trough hazardous levels running and jumping around as well as fighting your way against both digitized and polygonal enemies. Sub-Zero's interface is the same as in every MK game, with the addition of a "use" and "turn around" buttons and additions such as an inventory, and a slight RPG twist in which you get exp. for defeating opponents, which translates into new techniques and moves to execute in the game. Technically speaking this game represents the final evolutionary step in the MK's series 2D engines. New features include zooming, 3D lighting as well as 3D backgrounds and characters, etc.

Rampage 2: Universal Tour

Rampage 2: Universal Tour

Nintendo 64 - Released - March 31, 1999

While technology may improve graphics and sound, some things never change. Rampage 2: Universal Tour is very much in tune with its history, barely deviating from the original city-stomping arcade game appearing in the 1980s. Like its predecessor, Rampage World Tour, Rampage 2 retains the original 2D worlds, but improves the graphics, completely re-rendering the characters. The premise remains the same: stomp out cities and wreck things in general. Some new features in Rampage 2 include four new characters (in addition to the original three), new attacks and combos, a power meter, and bonus rounds. The cart allows up to three people can play at once and there are plenty of new cities to destroy.

Rampage 2: Universal Tour

Rampage 2: Universal Tour

Sony Playstation - Released - March 31, 1999

Rampage 2 Universal Tour is a video game released in 1999 and is the third game in the Rampage series. They say that lightning never strikes twice, but apparently the old adage doesn't apply to the fine folks at Scumlabs International. The unfortunate incident with George, Lizzy and Ralph should have forever changed the manner in which the chemical company conducts its business, but there has been yet another "accident." Now the world has to deal with the fury of three new beasts, and they won't stop until they find their fellow monsters for an all-out "bash" of epic proportions! George, Lizzie, and Ralph have been captured for the world to see. George is held at New York, Lizzie is imprisoned in Tokyo, and Ralph is stored in London. Scumlabs, who has just rebuilt their facilities in Salt Lake City, causes another accident that results in three new monsters so you must take control of one of the new beasties to set your friends free. Players can choose from a lobster named Ruby, the rhino Boris, and a giant rat called Curtis. When a player (literally) unlocks Ralph, Lizzie, or George, then they become playable characters. Once all the monsters are rescued, aliens begin to invade the earth, leaving the monsters the only ones who can save the planet they just helped partially destroy. After fending off the invasion on Earth, the monsters rescue Myukus (a cyclops-like alien) from Area 51 before chasing the aliens through space, destroying the aliens' bases throughout the Solar System and eventually rampaging through their homeworld. The object of the game is simply to stomp, punch, and kick everything in sight while trying to demolish a 2D city. Hostile threats include members of the armed forces, who will riddle your hide with bullets, explosives, and rockets on the ground as well as in the air. In order to clear a level, you'll have to completely destroy all of the buildings within the city. To do this, each monster can punch at the building while climbing it or repeatedly jump on the roof until it collapses. Things to keep an eye out for are open windows that can hold assorted power-ups and food. Watch out though, there might be a hazard that will cause your monster to vomit uncontrollably! After clearing a stage, a damage report will appear with statistics in the following three areas: building destruction, vehicle destruction, and human consumption or destruction. So the more you destroy, the higher ratings you'll receive in the damage report! Rampage 2: Universal Tour lets you compare such totals against up to two other players (with a Multi-Tap peripheral), and monster lovers can also continue the "tour" using one block of memory card space. Other features include multiple difficulty levels, the ability to share lives with friends and the option to damage fellow monsters with your attacks. The game also supports the Dual Shock Analog Controller to make you feel every rumble and crash! Features * Play as one of nine giant monsters * Smash and bash your way across three continents and more than 125 levels * Features three-player simultaneous action

Rampage Through Time

Rampage Through Time

Sony Playstation - Released - June 9, 2000

Rampage is a series of video games released by Midway for various consoles. The basic premise of the series is that the player controls a human transformed into a giant monster by a lab accident. It was released on June 9, 2000. Its predecessor is Rampage 2: Universal Tour and it is followed by Rampage: Total Destruction. In the game, 7 previous Scumlabs monsters, plus a new one, use a time machine to rampage through time. The world is again rebuilding after the events of Universal Tour. To clean up the mess quicker, Scumlabs invent a time machine to send people back in time to fix the mess without having to do it in the present. Unfortunately, the monsters, who have somehow made it back to Earth, appear and run into the machine. They begin terrorizing the past, present, and future, messing up the time stream.

Tak and the Power of Juju

Sony Playstation 2 - Released - October 15, 2003

An ancient prophecy foretells that the Moon Juju, the kind protector of the Pupanunu people, would be weakened by the evil Tlaloc, an embittered Pupanunu shaman, so he could turn the Pupanunu people into sheep as revenge for not being made high shaman in favor of another shaman, Jibolba. The prophecy also mentions a great and mighty warrior who would restore the Moon Juju, defeat Tlaloc, and bring peace to the Pupanunu people. Having escaped Tlaloc's spell, Jibolba believes his apprentice Lok to be the warrior of the prophecy and prepares to send him off; however, it appears that Lok has been turned into a sheep. Jibolba sends his younger apprentice, Tak (voiced by Jason Marsden), to find magical plants and change him back, though it turns out not to be Lok. Jibolba tells Tak to obtain the Spirit Rattle, which allows the wielder to communicate with powerful Juju spirits to assist him, while he finds Lok. Tak returns with the Rattle to find that Lok has been trampled to death by a herd of sheep. Jibolba has Tak collect 100 magic Yorbels and Lok's spirit from the spirit world, allowing him to successfully resurrect Lok. An unfortunate side-effect of the resurrection, however, is a severe case of diarrhea. Tak obtains the Moon Stones instead while Lok recovers, restoring the Moon Juju to full strength. The Moon Juju reveals that the warrior of the prophecy is not Lok, but Tak, as he has already fulfilled almost everything the prophecy predicted. Using his arsenal of Juju spells, Tak defeats Tlaloc and turns him into a sheep, finally fulfilling the prophecy.
