A tanuki greets the player and tells them that he will help them return to where they came from if they help him purify the Akimi village from the ever increasing gloom that is taking over the island and putting the villagers into a depression. Akimi Village plays similar to the Keflings series by the same developer. Players harvest resources from the island either directly with their avatar or by assigning villagers to do their bidding. Resources are used to make buildings, materials, etc... The goal is to liberate the island from the gloom by building various buildings in order to increase the culture level of the village which will then let the player plant radiant trees. Radiant trees bring light to an area that was previously darkened with gloom. This opens up more land to build on and more villagers to use as they are no longer moping around due to the gloom.

There are two story modes: Adventure and War, with goals for each mission, based on shielding off attacks, constructing buildings or getting revenues. There are seven races and 50 space stations to play with. Like most tycoon games, there is also a sandbox mode where you can play without objectives or restrictions.
