Anno 1404

Anno 1404

Windows - Released - June 23, 2009

We write the year 1404 and the emperor is sick. Only the horizon promises healing so Lord Richard Northburgh attempts the journey to the unknown lands in the south known only as the Orient. Following with a small ship, only a few supplies and a handful of loyal man is the player. Looking for a destiny in these uncharted waters, he will find new lands, new cultures, new allies, new friends and new challenges. To fulfill his objective and meanwhile even uncover a full-blown conspiracy, the player once again needs to build up a city from the ground to a flourishing metropolis. Of course that's not as easy as it sounds. While the player places houses, factories and builds the roads (once every building has to have a road-connection), the city needs citizens to work. But as the player's city grows, so do the needs of his citizens. While the countrymen are already happy with a house over their head, some fish and a market place, the noblemen won't settle for less than big city wares like glasses, wine or fur before they even dare to stop wining. To make things even more complicated, not all resources are available on every island. So the player either needs to expand onto other islands where he can grow coffee or other high quality products, or has to go trade with the other factions roaming around the map. Of course not all of those are friendly although the military doesn't play such a big role in Anno 1404 but still there are ship battles to be fought and other cities to be conquered. Although, as opposed to 1701 A.D., this time around the player just builds on of three buildings instead of ordering groups of land units around in order to defend his island. Once the building has received its attack orders, it still sends out soldiers but they can't be controlled by the player. To keep the player interested in both the campaign and the unlimited play, side-quests are available that are often difficult to complete but always offer a great reward. In addition unlimited play offers a new endgame quest which requires the player to build a monument like a cathedral. This not only takes much time but also an unbelievable amount of several different kinds of resources in addition of a high-level-city.

Anno 1404: Venice

Anno 1404: Venice

Windows - Released - February 24, 2010

Dawn of Discovery: Venice is the first add-on to Dawn of Discovery. As the name suggests, the add-on sends you from the Orient to the political most important and economical biggest city of Europe. 15 new scenarios are available in that setting with more than 300 new missions waiting to be accomplished by the player. Although the core game remains the same with the player building up a flourishing trade empire from scratch, a few new elements have been added into the mix. Besides new items, additional achievements and medals, two new types of ships are available featuring very big cargo holds. In addition islands featuring a huge volcano stand ready to be colonized by everyone who doesn't fear the almost inevitable outbreak in exchange for vast amounts of resources. Gameplay-wise one of the biggest changes is the inclusion of the bailiwick, giving the player access to a vast array of statistics including which and how many buildings the player has on one island, what they cost, how many inhabitants there are and much more. The second addition is the council board which allows the player to influence the city council in his or enemy cities even allowing him to conquer an enemy without using any military strength. Of course this features is also available to the enemies so the player needs to make sure he holds at least three of five seats in his city council in order to prevent a hostile take-over. The add-on also adds an all-new multiplayer-mode for up to eight players to the game. The players can either play against each other, form teams or play Coop. Coop is special in that each of the four players on one team has full control over one city and its assets, requiring everyone to work as a team and communicate with each other. Coop can either be played against up to four human players or up to four AI-opponents. Because of the unique way the game is played in this mode, no AI is allowed on a human team.

Anno 2070

Anno 2070

Windows - Released - November 17, 2011

Anno 2070 is an economy centred build-up strategy game that blends city buildings with resource management and diplomacy. It is the first game in the series to take place in the future instead of a historical setting in the past. The player has to harvest resources by placing a set of buildings (production chains) that will supply the town with goods needed by the population. Fulfilling the populations demands leads to them advancing to a higher level and unlocking more building options. The game is set in a semi-realistic future setting where the polar caps have melted and the sea levels have risen. The known structures of national states seem to have crumbled, however the game does not offer a specific explanation about the past. Each game starts with a game world consisting of islands, that can be colonized or tapped for resources. Two main factions are competing with each other, and the player has to choose one to start with, though eventually ending up with the possibility to build the buildings of both factions. While game's core elements stay the same, the "Global Trust" faction, also called "Tycoons" offers a rather industrial approach, making use of polluting factories and old fashioned technology, where the "Eden Initiative" steers into a more ecological direction, offering the player to use buildings like "weather control stations" or "Ozone Makers" to influence the eco-balance of his islands. The eco-balance is represented numerically and changing it changes the game-world visually, meaning a polluted island will be foggy while a clean island will appear bright and shiny. Furthermore gameplay is bound to the eco-balance, which means that polluted islands will suffer decreased productivity in agricultural areas and island inhabitants will be unhappy, resulting in less tax pay. At a later stage the player has the optional possibility to unlock a third faction, which is called "S.A.A.T.", or generally "The Techs" which enables to dive below the oceans surface and build production facilities on underwater plateaus. This faction also offers ways to produce items that increase the efficiency of different aspects of the game, like researching damage bonuses for your ships or items that reduce the upkeep cost of the production yards. Furthermore the Tech faction will grant access to some air units and submarines, while the main factions only offer battleships for sea combat. Several AI players are available that can be traded with, or battled. Each AI comes with a set of diplomacy options, like requesting a supporting fleet or requesting a quest to solve. Quests consist of small tasks that could be an escort of a trade ship or picking up crates from a certain spot on the ocean. While military, diplomacy and quests are short term diverting options, the main focus of the game clearly is in the management of goods, creating transport routes between islands and building a city. The game also offers a campaign that tells a story about an artificial intelligence going mad. Generally speaking, the campaign acts more like a tutorial, where only the last of three chapters can be called challenging. It introduces the game to the player and explains the mentality of Global Trust, the Eden Initiative and S.A.A.T.

Die Siedler: Aufbruch der Kulturen

Die Siedler: Aufbruch der Kulturen

Windows - Released - August 28, 2008

Olympus had it enough with those stupid humans and doesn't want them to use his name for anything anymore. But his two counsel angles convince him to give the humans a last chance to regain his respect. So now the Bavarians, Scots and Egyptians need to complete some objectives for Olympus while an evil Bavarian General and the Goddess Sachmet try to sabotage their doings. Released only in Germany, this is a German-language spiritual successor to The Settlers II (10th Anniversary). An English fan translation patch is available. During the eleven missions of the campaign, the player controls all three nations in order to please Olympus and to learn the unique sides of each folk which is the biggest change to the predecessor The Settlers II: 10th Anniversary. While the Bavarians have a good balance between economy and military and use traditional products like meat or beer, the Scots are more of a military force but can't build their economy up as fast as the other nations. They also have a different production line-up with a big focus on sheep which are needed to tailor kilts for the soldiers. The Egyptians are even more extreme. Their soldiers aren't very strong but they can build up a big city in no time mainly because they don't need any wood. Instead their buildings are made from clay bricks which can be produced faster. The other big change to the basic gameplay is the whole military system. Soldiers are now divided into melee and long-range combat. And instead of upgrading them inside forts and other buildings at the frontlines, they are now trained and upgraded in a new building type called barracks. The combat also isn't a fight one settler against another anymore but instead many against one. So instead of everyone waiting for their turn in the line when there is no one else two fight, two or more soldiers can attack the same enemy. This makes archers especially powerful. Other changes to the core gameplay include the addition of a place of devotement. There the player can turn resources in for temporary buffs or even direct attacks on the enemy like doubling the speed of your settlers for 15 minutes or destroying an enemy ship. And instead of sending a scout or geologist to a flag to make him do his work, the players are now required to build a small shack for him.

Steep

Steep

Windows - Released - February 12, 2016

Steep is an open world winter sports game based around four extreme sports: paragliding, skiing, snowboarding and wingsuit flying. The game was launched with a mountain in the Alps to explore, but another set in Alaska was added for free at a later time. The player is free to explore and can walk around. At any moment it is possible to switch to one of the four sports and continue that way. There is no linear path to follow, but by unlocking base camps, spotting drop zones and accessing new challenges by leveling up, steady progress along an increased difficulty level is possible. At any moment the player can enter a top-down mountain view to quickly move between spots or challenges. Previous trails can be revisited, there are replays and it is possible to design and share challenges for other players. Players can also appear in each other's worlds to be invited to fly, ride of ski together. Each sport has different controls and possibilities. It is possible to perform a large amount of stunts, mainly while skiing and snowboarding. Different types of challenges focus on fast times, large points through tricks or exploration. During wingsuit flying the focus is on avoiding obstacles and staying close to the ground to score points. Paragliding is more about navigating the best course to reach checkpoints. Most of them are specific for a sport, such as Big Air, Forest Slaloms or Proximity Flying. While a character cannot die there is a health system based on sustained g-forces and recovering after a fall takes some time. In most challenges up to three medals can be earned and they can retried infinitely. Next to overall player progress and new spots unlocked that way, a large amount of gear is made available gradually to customize the different characters. Overall progress is done in six categories based on the playing style: Bone Collector, Explorer, Extreme Rider, Freerider, Freestyler, and Pro Rider. Next to the challenges, drop zones and points of interest, the player can also experience mountain stories and events called memorable moments. Tobii eye tracking is supported.

The game works very differently from most general strategy games. Your goal is to reach the gateway at the end of each map, usually hidden amidst the enemy lines. The Settlers 6: The Eastern Realm

The Settlers 6: The Eastern Realm

Windows - Released

The Eastern Realm begins several months after the Red Prince's defeat, with Elias, Hakim, and Marcus (who has been forgiven for his betrayal), alerting the king that the southern kingdom of Basa has lost contact with the neighbouring kingdom of Hidun. In response, the king sends the trio to Basrima, a province on the border of Basa and Hidun. After riding the area of bandits intercepting communications between the two kingdoms, the party are led to the bandits' camp by a local woman. There, they find that the bandits were in the service of the "Goddess of the Green Fire". The woman then introduces herself as Saraya, daughter of Praphat, Mogul of Hidun. She joins the party, telling them that after losing contact with Basa, Praphat set out to investigate. However, contact with his expedition was also lost, and Saraya was searching for him when she was attacked by an army led by "strange priests." The party travel to the province of Hendalla in Hidun, where they learn that priests recently told the settlers Hidun was cursed, and only Khana, the priests' leader, could save them. Praphet soon arrives, telling the party he has sent a spy into Khana's camp, before heading for Thela, Hidun's capital. Meanwhile, the spy sends word that Khana is in Amesthan. Accompanied by a battalion of Praphat's troops, the party are ambushed as soon as they arrive, having been led into a trap. Holding off Khana's troops, they are shocked when Praphet's battalion also attacks them. They repel the attack, but cannot understand how Khana could have persuaded the troops to join her.[68] They soon learn that the battalion attacked on the orders of Praphat himself.[69] Marcus then brings word that Khana has attacked Thela, which is badly damaged, but unconquered. Subsequently, Praphat has his men abduct Saraya, telling her, "I have come to rescue you from the invaders. Khana will protect us both." Learning that Saraya is to be publicly sacrificed, the party travel to Almerabad, where she is being held. There, they are met by Namawili, a disciple of the real Khana. They free Saraya, who tells them that Khana has sent Praphat to Praphatstan to raise an army to finish off Thela. Namawili says Thela can be fortified before the army attacks, but only if the party are able to locate the treasure of Dario, hidden in the mountains of Idukun.[61][70] They retrieve the treasure, which they transport to Thela, before heading to Praphatstan. Although they are no match for the city's defences, they cut off the military buildings from their iron sources. Telling the party that the army in Praphatstan was only part of the plan, and another legion is stationed elsewhere, Praphat flees. The party next travel to Nakhara, Khana's home province. As she gloats that she has already dispatched Praphat to destroy Thela, the party storm the city, and arrest her. They also learn that Khana secured Praphat's loyalty by giving him a draught that eroded his will. In Thela, as the party set about securing the support of the local villages, Namawili arrives with the recipe for an antidote to Khana's draught. Procuring the necessary ingredients, Namawili brews the antidote. When Praphat leads a series of raiding parties against the local villages, the party capture him, and administer it. Shortly thereafter, he regains his senses, telling Saraya that he dreamt of a witch in green. With the war over and Hidun secure, Praphat thanks the party, and tells the king that he will always have an ally in Hidun.
