Dizzy's Excellent Adventures

Dizzy's Excellent Adventures

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1992

Dizzy's Excellent Adventures is a compilation of different Dizzy games developed and published by Codemasters, where first release was in Europe in 1992. Codemaster’s oval hero has appeared in more sequels than Jason Voorhees has appeared in Friday The 13th films. Now, however, the Codies have bundled together a series of previously-unreleased Dizzy games to tide his groupies over until his next adventure. The Dizzy’s Excellent Adventures pack contains Dizzy Panic, Bubble Dizzy, Prince Of The Yolkfolk, Spellbound Dizzy and Kwik Snax, and whilst three are the customary object-related arcade/adventures we have come to expect, Kwik Snax and Bubble Dizzy are odd little arcade numbers bundled under the Dizzy name - but even the egg-shaped hero’s monicker can’t disguise that these are updated versions of extremely old coin-ops. For the asking price, this is a worthwhile pack, and the three arcade/adventures - whilst hardly stretching the imagination or reflexes - are fun enough, and even the weak arcade games offer some entertainment. If you want to risk OD-ing on Dizzy, this is probably the best way to go...

Kwik Snax

Kwik Snax

MS-DOS - Released - 1993

Dizzy must rescue four of his 'Yolkfolk' (groan) chums in this game, from Cuckoo Land, Ice Land, Cloud Land and Zak's Castle. Like Fast Food it doesn't directly resemble the main series of arcade adventures, instead being a single-screen action game, resembling Pengo. The basic idea is to move around a maze of blocks collecting fruit, but the twist in the style is that you push the blocks in the maze to kill or trap those enemies. After every level is completed a short bonus screen appears where more fruit can be collected. During play various other tokens are released, such as bonus points, a smart bomb and control reversal.

Micro Machines

Micro Machines

MS-DOS - Released - October 1, 1994

If you're bored of racing Formula 1 cars, rally cars or MotoGP bikes in their natural habitats, the Micro Machines series could be for you. It involves racing miniatures representing particular vehicle types across a particular terrain found around the house. The Sports Cars race on the desktop, 4x4s in the sandpit, Formula 1 cars on a snooker table, and so on. These levels were packed with variation. The Snooker tables has the track painted on, although this is open to deviation (as are most levels), and had you racing through the pockets and across the rim of the table. Tanks raced as well, with the chance of shooting out your opponent if they got directly in front of you. The desktop levels include binders to jump across, pencil-sharpeners to avoid, and lots of visual jokes in the open homework. Viewed from overhead with small graphics, the races include up to 4 cars. In one player challenge mode you race through the 21 tracks in a set order, selecting your 3 opponents as you go along (adding a fair amount of strategy - ideally you should aim to eliminate the better CPU cars early on), eliminating one after every third race (assuming that you can finish in the top 2 of a race within your 3 lives). If you win 3 races in a row without using a continue you get a time-trial race which can earn you an extra life. The real innovation of the game was in the multiplayer modes. You started with 4 points each, and when one car gets far enough ahead to force the other car off-screen, the slider moves in their favour. Once it reached the end (which involved beating them 4 times more than they beat you) you win the level, although if 3 laps were completed, the person leading at that point is declared the winner - with a sudden death play off if scores are level. 9 of the tracks are available in this mode, although you can also play this Head to Head system as a 1-player game across all the tracks.

Pete Sampras Tennis 97

Pete Sampras Tennis 97

MS-DOS - Released - 1997

Codemasters used their Pete Sampras license for a second time on this tennis game. Playing as either a male or female in singles or doubles matches, your ultimate aim is to win each of the 8 matches, which represent the finals of 8 tournaments The four Grand Slam tournament venues are unlocked when you win tournaments on the other four (in Barcelona, Hong Kong, Frankfurt and Moscow). Single matches or quick multiplayer knockout tournaments can also be played, the latter with up to 8 human players. Lob, slice and drop shots each have their own control buttons, and spin can be comfortably applied. Serving involves stopping a curving arc at the right moment - there are three serve speeds and the arc's motion reflects this, so it is harder to get the faster serves accurate. Ten camera styles are available, encompassing both fixed and moving camera work.

Psycho Pinball

Psycho Pinball

These include those 3 as well as police cars, go-karts and a tank, which is too slow to be competitive but allows you to shoot out the other cars, and can be a blockade as you try to lap it. Up to 6 cars can be featured in each race, and you can race over 3,4 or 5 laps. Four human players are supported, 2 on joysticks and 2 on keyboard

The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy

The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy

MS-DOS - Released - 1994

The evil wizard Zaks has cast a spell on the peaceful Yolkfolk, and while many fell under his spell, others have other problems to deal with, including Dizzy, who saw his girlfriend Daisy kidnapped and taken hostage by Zaks, and it's up to him to restore the Yolkfolk to normal and rescue Daisy from the top of the Cloud Castle's tower. The most technically-advanced of Dizzy's adventure games in many ways, it was the only one to feature actual scrolling rather than a flick-screen system, the only one not to be released for the 8 bit computers the character originated on, the only one to originate on a console, as well as featuring many mini-games, such as Bubble Dizzy and an Operation Wolf clone. Gameplay involves walking Dizzy through the levels, picking up objects and using them to solve simple puzzles. There are plenty of tests of arcade skill along the way as well, as gaps must be jumped and baddies avoided - starting with a limited number of lives, the player can earn more by completing Theodore's puzzle. Before rescuing Daisy the player must capture all stars that unlock the gates of the tower.

Violator

Violator

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1991

A multi-level vertically scrolling shoot 'em up along similar lines to SWIV. You fly a plane through inhospitable landscapes full of enemy fighters and gun turrets. Most of the planes come at you in formation, firing easily-visible orange bullets at you, and can be either shot or avoided. The turrets are capable of rotating in 8 directions and aiming at you as best they can, so be careful to dodge their bullets. There are also larger vehicles which fly down the screen in a direct vertical line. The helicopters hold power-ups including extra weapons (which you only get for a limited number of shots; this is the one time where holding down fire constantly (on an auto fire joystick) isn't hugely beneficial), speed-ups and energy recharge (once your vehicle's damage reaches 100%, you lose that one of your 5 lives). The planes are huge and fire a constant volley at you, but offer a huge 5,000 points if taken down. At the end of each level an even bigger plane comes at you, weaving from left to right while gradually moving down the screen (and eventually out of the bottom of the screen and back through the top).
