The Phillips Videopac+ G7400 was released as a successor to Phillips Videopac G7000, which was known as the Magnovox Oddysey 2 in the North America, the Philips Odyssey in Brazil and Peru, and the Odyssey2 in Japan.

The Phillips Videopac+ G7400 was only released in Europe in limited quantities in 1983. There was a plan to release the system in the US as the Magnovox Odyssey 3 and later as the Magnavox Odyssey 3 Command Center, but this never occured, mostly because company executives concluded it was not commercially feasible due to the video game crash of 1983.

The Videopac+ G7400 was backwards compatible with all Videopac G7000 games, and some late Videopac G7000 releases had additional high-res background graphics that would only appear when played on the Videopac+ G7400. Additionally several games were released that could only be played on the G7400.
