1941: Counter Attack

1941: Counter Attack

Arcade - Released - February 1, 1990

The prequel to 1942, like the other games in the 19XX series, is a top down shooter set in WWII. One or two players control a P-38 (for player 1) or a Mosquito (for player 2), shooting enemy airplanes and ships. As in the previous games, one button shoots the airplane's weapon (which is upgradeable by collecting power ups left by enemies) and the other makes the airplane loop, destroying everything on screen (or causing extra damage to bosses, fought at the end of each level). The regular ammo is infinite, while the upgraded weapons have limited ammo. When the weapon button is held down, a bar at the bottom of the screen is charged and a special shot can be released, which varies in effect from weapon to weapon. The airplane has a life bar which starts with three points. Each hit taken or loop used will consume one life point. The player will earn new life points at the end of levels or by collecting proper power ups. Other power ups available are auxiliary side and ghost airplanes. Three continues can be used, and one point is added to the score when one of them is used (a feature first introduced by this game and then copied by other shoot-em-ups).

1941: Counter Attack

1941: Counter Attack

PC Engine SuperGrafx - Released - August 23, 1991

1941 Counter Attack is a vertical shooter by Capcom and conversion of the arcade game of the same name originally released in 1990. The action takes place during World War II and depicts Capcom's own fantastic vision of the historic battle between the American and Japanese air forces in the Pacific. The player's mission is rather straightforward - on board a Lockheed P-38 airplane, he must fight his way through six varied stages, take down enemy installations, battleships and other huge rockets on their narrow launching pads. Unlike its predecessors in the series, 1941 Counter Attack traded the trademark and arguably monotonous level design for a more structured and diverse formula. Stages vary from an enemy infested canyon to city landscapes and fortified strongholds. Several powerups can be collected along the way, such as tiny wingmen widening the plane's fire power, or destructive special weapons such as laser beams and side rockets. The main weapon can also be charged up by holding the fire button to discharge a powerful attack. Finally, the plane comes with a small life bar and can be hit three time before being blasted into oblivion - this bar however increases as the game progresses, and is used to release devastating special attacks as well. 1941 Counter Attack also features a two simultaneous player mode.

1942: Joint Strike

1942: Joint Strike

Sony Playstation 3 - Released - July 24, 2008

1942: Joint Strike takes inspiration and influence from the 194X series of World War II-themed vertical shooters. The art, sound, and gameplay of the new game takes cues from the original 194X games, but stands out as its own unique entry. Gameplay resembles the classic 2D style that gamers expect, but the game utilizes a full 3D engine. Set in a World War II-themed locale, stages, vehicles, and weapons have the look and feel of WWII with some stylistic differences. The world in which 1942 takes place is not our own and the events that transpire are not historically accurate, nor are they intended to be. This is an alternate world where history and technology developed along their own paths. As a result, players jump into the cockpits of WWII-era aircraft to take on huge waves of incoming enemy fire, dodging explosions and missiles while challenging huge bosses at the end of each stage. New co-op "Joint Strike attacks" combine the powers of two aircrafts into a devastating barrage.

Missions are flown alternately in the clouds against enemy planes and over water where there player must also disable enemy ships. There are many different weapons available via power-ups. The game is set in the Pacific theater of World War II, off the coast of the Midway Atoll. The goal is to attack the Japanese Air Fleet that bombed the players' American Aircraft Carrier, pursue all Japanese Air and Sea forces, fly through the 16 levels of play, make their way to the Japanese battleship Yamato and destroy her. 11 Levels consist of an Air-to-Sea battle (with a huge battleship or an aircraft carrier as an End-Level Boss), while 5 levels consist of an all-aerial battle against a squadron of Japanese Bombers and a Mother Bomber that needs to be destroyed. As in 1942, players pilot a P-38. Two buttons are used: one for regular attacks (with several weapons) and one for special actions that executes either a loop like in 1942 or one of three special attacks that damage the plane. Unlike 1942, the player only has one life, with one refillable energy meter. Destroying a complete formation of red enemy planes will result in a power-up, such as a health boost or a temporary special weapons which replaces the default twin gun.

1943: The Battle of Midway: Mark II

1943: The Battle of Midway: Mark II

Arcade - Released - 1987

1943: The Battle of Midway Mark II is a vertical scrolling shooter arcade game released exclusively in Japan by Capcom in June 1988. It is the third game in the 19XX series, an update of 1943: The Battle Of Midway, released a year prior. The title of this game translates from Japanese as "1943 Modified - Midway Naval Battle" Not a proper sequel per se, 1943 Kai is a Japan-only re-vamp of the original 1943 that keeps the same setup and gameplay, while making a few minor tweaks here and there for variety's sake. A sturdy biplane replaces the staple P-38, the level count has been reduced from 16 to 10, and the weapon selection available from the 'Pow' icons has been increased to include the rare 'wingmen' option and a super-efficient 'laser' (a special weapon that could only be obtained via a hidden code in the foriginal 1943). Not just that, every weapon can now be individually powered-up by picking up the same icon twice - so word to the wise: go for two lasers and some wingmen immediately. Well, some might say that it is almost exactly the same as its predecessor, yet 1943 Kai does have a slightly different flavour: it features an all-new soundtrack, and the overall rhythm of the game game has been increased. If anything, the core of the game is better - but then its kitsch biplanes, over-the-top weaponry and outrageous background colours (red sea?) give it a slightly tacky re-hashed feel, and make it loose the gritty pseudo-realism of the original. The difficulty has been upped so that the game is even more unforgivably fierce... It's a quicker, tougher challenge - a souped-up remix specifically concocted for those who enjoyed the original.

SHOOT is for the primary weapons, and BOMB controls a limited number of special weapons you can get extra by collecting powerups. During the game, if you hold down SHOOT for a short time, a power-shot missile will be released and whatever it hits will be "locked" for a period of time or until it is destroyed. Long ago in the realm of Shinkoku, eight deities known as "The Eight Guardian Generals" battled to protect civilization from a destructive force known only as Gohma. Asura was one of the most prominent of this group. During the victory celebration, the Emperor of Shinkoku was assassinated in a sinister plot and the blame was placed on Asura. In the middle of the commotion, Asura's wife was also murdered and his daughter kidnapped. With even his brother-in-law and rival Yasha turning against him, Asura was banished from Shinkoku. Awoken by a voice after 12,000 years, Asura vows revenge on all those who have betrayed him. With unprecedented levels of dynamism, drama and interaction, Asura's Wrath delivers a fresh take on the action gaming genre. Combining intense combat with a seamless player-controlled narrative, Asura's Wrath introduces a brand new style of action game. Players will control Asura in a blend of action and cinematic sequences taking an active role in the gameplay direction. Asura's Wrath finds Asura facing off against numerous distinct enemies, including planetary sized bosses. Asura's story of revenge is told through episodic gameplay, taking the player on a journey of highs and lows and adopting a structure that is similar to a TV drama series.

Asura's Wrath

Asura's Wrath

Sony Playstation 3 - Released - February 21, 2012

Asura's Wrath is an action game where the player controls the titular Asura. He is one of the eight elite demigods, and their main Guardian General, who leads a legion to fight a race of beasts called Gohma who roam Earth, called Gaea in the game. He serves the emperors who rose as the leaders of Shinkoku Trastrium, a civilization that unified all nations. Demigods derive their power from mantra, a source powered by the emotion of mortals. The civilization however drained the planet of its resources and the Gohma was a natural phenomenon to combat the power of Shinkoku Trastrium. It leads to the War of Creation which neither side can win. Eventually Vlitra is awakened, a Gohma the size of the continent that causes the demigods to erect Karma Fortress, an orbital space station. The game starts when the Gohma attack the space station and specifically a giant laser known as Brahmastra, powered by mantra, that could wipe out all Gohma. Asura's daughter Mithra is chosen by the 128th Emperor Strada to become the main priestess to guide the mortal's prayers to provide mantra, but the appointment is not to Asura's liking. The main story is split up into three parts with 18 episodes in total. These follow the style of an anime series with opening and ending credits, including cut-scenes and a preview of the next part of the story at the end. Next to a hidden ending the game's story is further extended through DLC with a fourth part, lost episodes, and extensions of existing episodes. Large parts of the game are played as a third-person fighting game with a focus on melee combat. Asura has different attacks that can be chained into combos. Heavy attacks cause him to overheat however and cannot be used continuously. There are dive attacks to engage from the air, dash to break through shields and a quick recovery attack to reduce damage after being hit, along with regular counters and dodging. He also has a ranged cannon that can lock onto enemies and blast opponents and projectiles out of the sky. By inflicting and receiving damage an Unlimited gauge near the top of the screen is filled up. Once full it can be activated for the Unlimited mode for more strength and no overheating. Next to the green health bar there is a red Burst gauge filled up by defeating enemies, inflicting damage, and following on-screen prompts. Once full a powerful attack is unleashed and that one is often needed to finish off the most powerful opponents and advance the plot. For many parts the game shifts into rail shooter sequences where Asura soars through the skies. In those sequences movement is limited to a fixed axis for the area shown on the screen and the camera rotates automatically. Asura attacks and locks onto multiple targets and needs to evade projectiles Space Harrier style. The game has many cinematic events that require direct input from the player. These appear during gameplay but also during static cinematics or flight sequences. These quick-time events are rated based on accuracy and speed, and even during cinematics missing them can cause Asura to die or lose a significant amount of health.

Ataxx

Ataxx

Arcade - Released - 1990

Ataxx is an abstract strategy board game that involves play by two parties on a seven-by-seven square grid. The object of the game is to make your pieces constitute a majority of the pieces on the board at the end of the game, by converting as many of your opponent's pieces as possible. Each player begins with two pieces, white and black, for the first player and second player respectively. The game starts with the four pieces on the four corners of the board, with white in the top left and bottom right and black on the other two. White moves first. During their turn, players move one of their pieces either one or two spaces in any direction. Diagonal distances are equivalent to orthogonal distances, e.g. it is legal to move to a square whose relative position is two squares away both vertically and horizontally. If the destination is adjacent to the source, a new piece is created on the empty departure square. Otherwise the piece on the source moves to the destination. After the move, all of the opponent player's pieces adjacent to the destination square are converted to the color of the moving player. Players must move unless no legal move is possible, in which case they must pass.

Bionic Commando

Bionic Commando

Sony Playstation 3 - Released - May 19, 2009

It has been ten years since Nathan "RAD" Spencer managed to defeat the Imperials and destroy the Albatross in Bionic Commando. Hailed as heroes he and his comrade Joseph "Super Joe" Gibson became responsible for the training of new recruits under the flag of the TASC. But when Spencer disobeyed an order from Gibson during Operation Blackout, which lead to the death of several TASC agents, Spencer was court-martialed and sentenced to death while through his actions the public changed its opinion about bionic technology leading to the cancellation of the program and the "Bionic Purge". During the purge all TASC personnel were ordered to turn in their bionics or have them forcibly removed. Some fled, others obeyed but in the end bionic technology was effectively removed from the nation - at least until terrorists from BioReign detonate an atomic bomb in Ascension City. With no military unit returning from Ground Zero once gone in, Nathan is spared his fate for now and is instead send in to deal with the situation under the promise to get new information about the where-abouts of his missing wife Emily. In a classic 3rd-person-shooter-style, the player moves through the destroyed city, fulfilling objectives like activating a relay station and thereby deactivating a minefield and killing the countless enemies (including mechs and other deadly vehicles) blocking his way. Literally always at his side: his Bionic Arm. While it can be used to just throw a nasty punch, the built-in grappling hook is the real clue on that device. It not only allows the player to swing around fast and even climb up the highest skyscraper, it's also a handy tool to get rid of enemies and for removing other annoying obstacles. At the same time Nathan also can use normal weapons with his right hands like pistols or grenades. Besides BioReign-forces, the environment itself is also an enemy to Nathan with radioactive zones killing him almost instantly. And due to the weight of his Bionic Arm, Nathan can't swim and will drown when he falls into water. To keep things interesting, the game features both collectibles and challenges. While the collectibles are simply hidden in the levels, challenges are offered once the player has done something, gains a new ability and such. The goals of these challenges include killing 25 enemies, making three consecutive swings or destroying three train wagons. Once a challenge has been met, the player immediately gains a bonus like better armor and often gets the same challenge again - only this time with increased requirements. The game also features a multiplayer-mode for up to eight player featuring Deathmatch, Team-Deathmatch and Capture the Flag on small, mostly vertical maps allowing the players to make full use of the Bionic Arm the same way as in single-player.

Bionic Commando (2009)

Microsoft Xbox 360 - May 22, 2009

Bionic Commando is an action-adventure game, in which the player controls player-character Nathan Spencer. The game uses several mechanics (primarily radiation) which act as barriers. These barriers are used to keep the players within the confines of the linear level design. Nathan Spencer is able to target enemies while hanging, climbing a building or even in mid-swing, while using an implement called the Bionic Arm which can also be used to attack enemies at close range. The bionic arm can be used to grab and launch objects such as boulders and cars at enemies. In addition, he is equipped with boots that enable him to kick said objects at enemies. These boots are also the reason Spencer does not take damage from extremely long falls.

Breakshot

Breakshot

Pinball - Released - May 1, 1996

Breakshot is a physical pinball table released by Capcom Coin-Op in 1996, designed by Greg Kmiec with artwork by Stan Fukuoka. The playfield deliberately hearkens back to the design philosophies of the electro-mechanical pinball machines of the '70s, with a single-level playfield and total ball visibility at all times. The object of the game is to complete 3 games of pool - Eight Ball, Nine Ball and Rotation - in order to start Cutthroat Countdown, a high-stakes pool game where each ball is called out in order; each ball you sink is worth 1M points times one plus the number of times Cutthroat Countdown has been successfully completed (maximum 3M) and the mode ends with a shot at a Super Jackpot worth twice the value of the balls you sank before either running out of time or sinking all the balls. Balls can be sunk in several ways; you can hit their affiliated target on the playfield, shoot an orbit with a lit Super Cue, shoot the center pockets or make the undocumented skill shot (soft plunge the ball to the upper flipper, then shoot the Bank Shot lane to score 100K and sink a ball). The main gimmick, or "toy", of the game is the center pockets area, a set of three saucers behind a retractable post. When a ball is shot into the center pockets area, the post rises and the ball falls against it, thus making it into a captive ball; if a ball was previously locked, then it will be released from the center pockets and join the second ball on the post. You must then hit the post, which will hopefully transfer enough force to the ball(s) to send them into the center pockets, thus locking one or both of them.
