1942

1942

Commodore 64 - Released - 1986

1942 is set in the Pacific theater of World War II. The goal is to reach Tokyo and destroy the entire Japanese air fleet. The player pilots a plane dubbed the "Super Ace" (but its appearance is clearly that of a Lockheed P-38 Lightning). The player has to shoot down enemy planes; to avoid enemy fire, the player can perform a roll or "loop-the-loop".

Cabal

Cabal

MS-DOS - Released - 1988

Originating in the arcades, Cabal is a shooter where the protagonist runs back and forth along the bottom of the screen, ducking and dodging bullets and grenades from the enemy. The roll maneuver from the arcade was not implemented in the PC version. The player returns fire by moving a target around the screen which also moves the player character and may expose him to enemy fire. The enemies throughout the five levels come thick and fast and there are many of them. They include normal foot soldiers, tanks, helicopters and end of level bosses such as submarines and war machines. Just about everything on the screen can be blown up or shot. There are bonus points to be picked up for destroying buildings and weapons to be picked up from the enemy, such as machine guns and shotguns. Two-player mode is available.

Cabal (Capcom)

Cabal (Capcom)

Commodore 64 - Released - 1989

This is the Capcom version of Cabal. It must keep the "Cabal (Capcom)" name to stay separate from the Ocean version of the game in LaunchBox. The player assumes the role of an unnamed commando trying to destroy several enemy military bases. The player's character is seen from behind and initially starts behind a protective wall (the wall can get damaged and shattered by enemy fire). The player must use a limitless ammunition gun and a limited number of grenades to fend off enemy troops and damage the base. An enemy gauge at the bottom of the screen depletes as foes are destroyed and certain structures (usually the ones that collapse when destroyed, rather than simply shattering) are brought down. At the successful completion of a level by fully depleting the enemy gauge, all the remaining buildings onscreen collapse and the player progresses to the next stage.

Dead Rising 4

Dead Rising 4

Windows - Released - December 6, 2016

Dead Rising 4 is the fourth main game in the open world survival horror series and the eighth installment overall. It is set during September 2021, one year after the events of Dead Rising 3 and sixteen years after the original Dead Rising. The protagonist is Frank West, formerly a freelance photographer and now a professor at a community college, returning as the lead from some of the earlier titles. The prologue is a nightmare in the Willamette Park View mall in Colorado from his earlier days during the zombie outbreak. When he wakes up he receives a message from his his rebellious protege Vick Chu who drives him to Willamette. West thinks they go there to play minigolf, but Chu actually wants to look into a secret military base with him where human trials are supposed to take place. After sneaking into the base which serves as a tutorial, soon the scenes from his nightmare become reality again, set in winter during the Christmas period. As before the game focuses on brawls against large groups of zombies, using combinations of melee and ranged attacks along with thrown weapons to mow down zombies in spectacular ways with over-the-top and slapstick violence. The game again uses an extensive crafting system where players can create and customize their own weapons along with building many types of vehicles. Weapons include for instance the Gandelf, combining a spear and a garden elf to shoot exploding elves and a slam attack. West gets to explore Willamette which has changed a lot since his last visit. The mall from the original Dead Rising has been turned into the central Willamette Memorial Megaplex. At the same time he also gets to explore the surrounding neighbourhoods. As usual there are a lot of items to discover and collect such as weapon blueprints and hidden graffiti art to photograph. There are also many side quests, hidden bosses known as Maniacs and additional investigations to pursue along with events to rescue survivors or destroy military equipment. There is more time to explore as the game no longer employs a countdown timer to urge the character forward. Shelters serve as safe havens to acquire new vehicles, weapons and maps that reveal collectibles in the environment. Experience provides skill points used to upgrade abilities. Photography plays a role now, as West can use a camera during investigations with different filters for night vision, to detect clues or to take selfies, similar to the Batman: Arkham games. Another new element is the introduction of an Exo Suit. It briefly makes West extremely powerful, allowing him to tear through the environment and the groups of enemies. Some opponents can use it too. Enemies no longer get powerful at night during the day-night cycle, but there are new enemy types such as the soldiers from the Obscuris organization and the suicidal "freshies", humans that have only just turned into zombies. The game's save system is now more traditional based on checkpoints, rather than a limited amount of saves. The game still supports cooperative multiplayer, but now no longer for the main campaign. Instead there are now four separate episodes where a team of up to four online players works together to complete missions in the mall.

While returning from a journey, Arthur sees the Princess' castle and her village under attack by Lucifer's forces. Now, Arthur must venture back to the Lucifer's palace and destroy the demon in order to rescue the Princess' soul and bring her back to life! And it won't matter whether he fights in his shining armor or in his underwear alone...the bravest Knight in the land isn't going to be stopped by some monsters! Stocker

Stocker

Commodore 64 - Released - July 21, 1988

Race from coast to coast across the southern USA in this stock car racer, which takes you from Florida to California through freeways, bridges, side routes and country roads (and if you're so inclined, through houses and water bodies too). As your car zooms in top-down view along the bends, forks and intersections, your only rival is the clock - represented by a fuel tank that only lasts 90 seconds, no matter your speed. Strewn along the track are a few gas stations, crucial for keeping your tank from going dry. Traffic and other racers may get in your way, but the real nuisance is the police: any encounter with a squad car will get you ticketed, which detracts from your score (and may eventually end your game, depending on settings). You're free to leave the asphalt and rough it off-road, or to veer off course by taking the question-marked forks (which may or may not shorten your route).

Street Fighter (US version)

Street Fighter (US version)

Commodore 64 - Released - 1988

The player competes in a series of one-on-one matches against a series of computer-controlled opponents or in a single match against another player. Each match consists of three rounds in which the player must defeat an opponent in less than 30 seconds. If a match ends before a fighter is knocked out, then the fighter with the greater amount of energy left will be declared the round's winner. The player must win two rounds in order to defeat the opponent and proceed to the next battle. If the third round ends in a tie, then the computer-controlled opponent will win by default or both players will lose. During the single-player mode, the player can continue after losing and fight against the opponent they lost the match to. Likewise, a second player can interrupt a single-player match and challenge the first player to a new match.

The Speed Rumbler

The Speed Rumbler

Commodore 64 - Released - 1987

It's the 21st century in America. Technology has improved by leaps and bounds, and now (most) people live in peace. But in a small town somewhere, a vicious terrorist group known as Zapper is terrorizing small towns and kidnapping innocent people so that they can build a secret weapon. And, as it turns out, the family and friends of someone code-named "Super Joe" just so happened to be one of the innocents caught! Now Super Joe's hungry for revenge. Can Super Joe and his armored car destroy the Zapper organization and save his town from utter destruction in time? The Speed Rumbler is a action game where the player races against the clock in an armored car piloted by Super Joe, destroying other cars and saving captives along the way. Super Joe's car is armed with a gun that he can use to shoot down enemy cars, but the enemy cars have a few tricks up their sleeve, so Super Joe should always be on guard. As the player progresses through the game's six stages, Super Joe can be given a boost by saving captives, who then award him with bonus points, increased fire power, or speed-ups. If Super Joe's car is destroyed, he can continue the fight on foot with his rifle. But unfortunately, Super Joe is not as powerful as his car - one hit and he's history. Super Joe has 24 "hours" to destroy Zapper. The game is over when Super Joe runs out of lives or time - or if he successfully completes his mission.
