1000 Miglia Volume I: 1927 to 1933

1000 Miglia Volume I: 1927 to 1933

MS-DOS - Released - 1991

Based around a classic motor car race from either side of the war, 1000 Miglia (literally '1000 miles') is an unusual racing game. You have to progress across Italy through a number of stages in your rickety 20s car. Keeping within time limits at each point is crucial to staying in the game. At the beginning of the game, you can choose the spare parts that you will take with yourself in case your car breaks down. You also choose a car and set up the skills for your two drivers; you can distribute points between Skill, Resistance and Mechanics, and choose the driver's favorite part of the race. Atmospheric conditions change throughout the race: sometimes the weather will be clear, sometimes you'll have to drive through rain or mist. During the race, your car will sometimes lose a wheel or need other repairs. If this happens, you'll lose a couple of minutes repairing it - as long as you have the appropriate spare part; if you don't have one, it's game over!

3D World Soccer

3D World Soccer

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1992

3D World Soccer is a football game with national teams, featuring digitized sprites on a three-dimensional pitch. Unlike Simulmondo's earlier I Play: 3-D Soccer, the player controls any member of the team, except for the goalkeeper. The camera is loosely centered on the ball, slightly zooming in or out depending on the length of its trajectory. Control is partly direct, partly tactical: in general, the player can freely move the team member under control until the fire button is pressed, whereupon an icon above his head indicates what type of action he will perform, such as a pass, shot to goal or tackle. That action is generally automatic: for example, if a tackle is selected, the team member will try to follow the opponent with the ball and attempt a slide tackle when close enough. The game is single-player only. At halftime, the viewpoint changes so that the player always faces the other team's goal. The available game modes are single match, knockout tournament, and championship. The game can be saved to disk during tournaments.

3D World Tennis

3D World Tennis

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1992

This tennis simulation followed up Simulmundo's 3D World Boxing, while 3D World Soccer was the final game in the series. There is some sports management involved as the player you choose (from pre-built selection or from your own creation) can improve his skills (forehand, backhand, serve, volley, etc.) as he wins matches and prize money and moves up in the rankings. There's 4 different play options: Singles Match, Singles Tournament, Grand Slam, and ATP Tour. You must be qualified to play for the last two options based on your current ranking. Beating opponents ranked higher will move your own ranking higher more quickly. The playing view is directly from behind the player but as you approach the net it is scaled to always be appropriate for what the player would see from that vantage point. The players are viewed in large well-animated forms and even the backgrounds of crowd scenes are also animated. At the bottom of the screen there are player's photos and ability bar graphs as well as a small overhead view of the player's positions on the court.

Commodore 64 - Released - 1992

Based on the Italian comics character Dylan Dog, London "nightmare detective", Gli Uccisori (The Murderers) is another volume created by Tiziano Sclavi himself and is a side-view action platform game with puzzle elements. After the nightmare Dylan saw in his dream, he received the invitation from one mysterious person to visit a mansion along with many other people. Accepting the invitation, Dylan (clothed in his signature red shirt, black jacket, and blue jeans) entered the house and took part in the sumptuous feast. But the wine was poisoned, and the part of guests were the murderers. Dylan, remembering the nightmare, just in case took the revolver with him. And here it all starts... You as Dylan should move around the house, fight with the murderers with bare hands, with revolver, or with weapons found in the house such as knife, screwdriver, sword, or maul. You should find certain keys to open certain doors. Also after killing certain murderers, you'll be provided with certain secrets given to you by the survived guests. Main parts of the story is told in comics art-style without any literary material. The problems for you in the mansion along the murderers are: 1) the timeflow, so you should act quickly; 2) your life energy, so you should keep it as high as possible blocking the opponent's hits; 3) number of the bullets for the revolver, so you should use them wisely; 4) no ability to save the game, so you should break through to the finish during the single seance of the gameplay; 5) the mansion's owner, whose identity you'll understand at the very end.

Dylan Dog: The Murderers

Dylan Dog: The Murderers

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1992

Poor old Dylan Dog (a man with a miserable childhood, no doubt) is, apparently, the star of the ‘No. 1 Italian comic book’. Our hero has had the misfortune to attend a party at which everyone goes barking mad and tries to maim everyone else. Mr Dog’s task is to suss it all out and be the hero. Fat chance. Dylan strolls around this flick-screen ‘whodunit’ as if hunting for his car keys, rather than the forces of evil. Every time you enter a new screen, the game pauses, displaying a little picture to keep you entertained. The high point of this adventure comes when Dylan bumps into other party-goers. Unfortunately, the ensuing hand-to-hand combat is totally naff. The good points – the graphics are great, with nice realistic animation and loads of tomato ketchup splattered all over the place. You also get plenty of tunes that change as you go on, but very few meaty FX to go with the gore. Whenever you reach an important point in the game, you get an animated scene to illustrate it, which is quite nice. And, erm, that’s about the good points actually. The bad points – it gets very boring. You never seem to make any progress, you pick up objects that don’t seem to serve any purpose and wander through rooms that appear interesting but aren’t. You only get six bullets for the whole game, which means you have to indulge in far too much hand-to-hand combat. And, blow me down, hand-to-hand combat is crap. You punch, then they punch. Worlds are born, stars go supernova, the universe revolves, and eventually they fall over dead. It’s also nigh-on impossible to die. I spent five minutes being attacked by a maniac with a power drill, and barely lost any energy. Challenging it is not. Plus, the control system is annoying. You have to push up to go through a door, but that also makes you jump. Be prepared to spend a lot of time jumping in front of doors before going through them. If the comic book was as slow and tedious as this it would soon be heading for treble figures in the comic charts.

Dylan Dog: Through the Looking Glass

MS-DOS - Released - 1993

The second game from Simulmondo based on the Italian comics character Dylan Dog, "horror detective", is a first-person view adventure game largely based on Lovecraft's literary works and their mythology (Cthulhu, the Necronomicon). While you're called to investigate on the murder of a famous archaeologist, an unprecedented volcano activity is taking place, with the scientists unable to find an explanation. The game is divided in two parts, and is quite different from other Simulmondo productions based on Dylan Dog.

Dylan Dog: Through the Looking Glass

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1993

Dylan Dog: Through the Looking Glass is an Adventure game, developed and published by Simulmondo, which was released in Europe in 1993. The game takes its title from comic book #10 of the series, ‘Attraverso lo Specchio’ (Through The Looking Glass). The plot is simple: One night, a professor of archeology is murdered by a strange and horrible creature which came out of a mirror in his home. The professor’s daughter decides to hire Dylan Dog to investigate the horrible death of her father. And so the game begins. The game is a first person point-and-click adventure. Playing is really easy: Left-clicking examines the object which the mouse is pointed at; right-clicking twice followed by a left-click combines two objects, or if both right-clicks are delivered on a single object, interacts with it. Of all of Simulmondo’s games, Dylan Dog was the only one which was translated into English. Sadly, the translation is very poor quality, and sometimes damages the atmosphere of the game which is otherwise excellent, having been heavily influenced by the works of HP Lovecraft.

Remember I Play 3D Soccer? Well, in their almost obsessive quest to make the ultimate 3D soccer game, Simulmondo have gone a step further. Now, instead of just viewing the pitch from one angle, you rotate the whole world around your player. The effect is impressive as vectors and sprites are scaled and stretched to create a convincing pitch environment. Unfortunately, the game is practically unplayable: it's almost impossible to keep track of what's going on and you can't instantly swap control from one player to another. This leads to an overwhelming feeling of disorientation. There's a comprehensive tactical and team management aspect to the game, but when it plays as badly as this, who cares?

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1991

Formula 1 3D is a Racing game, developed and published by Simulmondo, which was released in Europe in 1991. Simulmondo was running warm-up laps with Formula 1: They promise fast 3D action with variable detail, giving players the choice of true speed or high realism but at the end this was a wasted opportunity from Simulmondo to make a good racing simulation game. They mixed some arcade elements (timer, few laps, easy handling, no damage) with a bit of simulation. Unfortunately, the mix didn't get well and the result was a dull game (considering also that there was just only one circuit). On the other hand, the downs become up when played hotseat with a friend. Play it with some friends and game is really enjoyable.

Commodore 64 - Released - 1991

I Play 3D Soccer is one of the earliest 3D football games. You take control of a single player, viewing the action from right behind his perspective. Signalling for your team-mates to pass you the ball is a key gameplay element - don't expect to just watch your team win with no contribution from you. When you gain possession (or press the button while not in possession) your player automatically turns to face the goal. Only single matches are on offer. There are ten skill levels; match lengths and team kits can also be modified. Two-player matches are split-screen. Unlike Sensible Soccer and Kick Off 2, the offside rule is featured.

I Play: 3D Tennis

MS-DOS - Released - 1992

An extension of I Play: 3-D Soccer, with a new section for planning the team tactics and a more complex simulation of a championship. Most of the core game code of predecessor was reused. Selecting the championship of Italy, England, or Germany, you should lead your team to the first place. Before the match begins you may adjust the list of team players and their formation on the field. When the match begins, you should move your player in 3rd-person view to run to appropriate position, try to catch or to get the ball, and want to make a score. While you are moving on the field, the map shows the position of the ball and other players. Commentator watches the match and tells either who is controlling the ball now, or what event was occurred on the field.

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1992

Milano, 1999. A mysterious car crash takes the life of entrepreneur Victor Erni. Private eye Duomo is hired by Erni's widow to investigate on the case, but he has only twelve hours before the police declares it a mere accident. The main gameplay screen is based on a real map of Milan's city centre, from which the player has to pick a destination among a vast selection of real-life streets, squares and plazas. Each movement accelerates an in-game countdown representing the time limit to solve the case. A first-person, point-and-click interface provides the main mean of interaction with characters and locations, the latter being generally represented by still images. The game is set entirely during night time, thus enhancing its neo-noir feel. Since there are no language options, the game is only playable in Italian.

Pressing the 'kick' key down will increase the power of the kick. The number of players in the field is unusual and consists of 7 players for each team including goalkeeper. The game is available for 1-8 players, and it has slightly different range of computer AI's levels, game speeds, match durations, and countries in Amiga/C64 versions.

Italy '90 Soccer

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1988

Another football game, yet again based upon the 1990 World Cup. At least Simulmondo are an Italian software house, which can’t be bad considering it’s the host nation. Simulmondo have looked into their (cracked) crystal ball, and found only eight competing teams. Matches are between six and ten minutes long and are viewed as if watching from the stands. Sprites are very small (although their boots are comparitively huge) and badly animated — they look like they’re doing the can-can. Effects are few and are the usual screeches. It’s difficult to know what to say here. The pathetic graphics are overwhelmingly off-putting, and when you force yourself to play, it’s just as slow and dull as expected. Italy Soccer ‘90 is as old-fashioned in it’s gameplay as it is in it’s graphics. Avoid at all costs.

Setting the ball in the field, you should select the direction and power of the stroke. The points at the end of each stage are calculated as subtraction of made strokes and pre-defined ones different for each stage. The winner is a golfer with a lowest number of points. The number of players (1-4), their names, and courses may be adjusted before the start. In multiplayer mode, each player strikes their balls in the separate fields in turns.

Refined, money-driven minds are continually creating virtual realities full of simulated dream worlds that they provide all kinds of pleasures: sex, speed, vertigo, strong and new sensations intoxicate. But this costs people a lot, as in drugs: it often costs the loss of one's identity, the end of oneself. This is what is going to happen to the protagonists of this "Luna Park".

Simulman must arrest drug traffickers including The Great Cold or The Great Cold One as the title would be translated in English. Blessed are you who interact for pleasure. Not that I simulate by compulsion: only when I am faced with an adventure like this one of Simulman that you have in front of you, seriously I would like to know nothing else but to personally enjoy the action. But someone needs to create an adventure like this. Okay, in spite of myself I must rise to the occassion and satisfy you needs. In short, in this simulated story I decided to tell the past of Simul. Something you may have seen coming, and something that may not bring delight. However, the choice to become a virtual agent is not one taken at random. Let's say that the city understood that the threat of the Doors was real now. And that the simulations could become more disturbing and harmful of real reality. And so love and hate, good and evil are certainly no longer unreal and less exciting just because they are virtual. So here you will discover, interacting with enthusiasm and passion I hope, many things about the past life of the Simulmans and we will understand together why he is so determined to eradicate SS-DOS and its simulated creatures, including The Great Cold.
