Cricket International

Cricket International

Commodore 64 - Released - 1988

Time to dig out those whites and pads and have a game of cricket. You have the chance here to play a sixty over game against a friend or the computer. You can choose your own team but if you don't fancy it then England or the Rest of the World are your two choices. If you win the toss you can choose whether to bowl or bat first. Another option is your skill level, Test, County or Village. If you choose to bowl first you can choose from six bowlers who are fast, medium or spin. The game is viewed behind the bowler and umpire at a elevated angle. As the bowler is running towards the crease, the speed, direction and pitch of the ball can be controlled. The spin and swing can be controlled as well for the spin or medium bowler. After the ball is released the screens switches and you can now see the front view of the batsman at a elevated angle. The batsman can control the angle and height of the bat as well as his position on the crease. If the ball is hit or missed without hitting the stumps or a LBW, the view switches to a top down view of the pitch showing the position of all the fielders. Here the batsman can decide to run or the nearest fielder to the ball can be controlled.

Everyone's a Wally

Everyone's a Wally

Commodore 64 - Released - 1985

Everyone's a Wally was the first arcade adventure game to feature multiple playable characters - a revolutionary feature at the time. Players began in control of Wally (a builder and handyman), but could switch to Wilma (his wife), and their friends Tom (a punk mechanic), Dick (a plumber) and Harry (a hippie electrician) - these last three names drawn from the placeholder phrase Tom, Dick and Harry. Herbert (their baby son) also appeared in the game as a mobile hazard NPC. The player cannot freely change character; the player begins in control of Wally and in order to switch must be on the same screen as the desired character. Those not being controlled by the player wander randomly around the map controlled by extremely simple AI - another feature that at the time had never been seen before. Lives and health (called "endurance") were tracked independently for each character, but the game ended if any character died. The aim of the game is to complete a day's worth of work for each character; each character has a job to do stereotypical of their skill - for instance, Wally has to build a wall, Wilma has to take back three books to the library, etc. Completing the job awards the character with a letter, which spells out a password to open a safe holding everyone's wages. The eventual password is "BREAK" - knowing this does not spoil the game since most of the letters can be seen before jobs are complete; the game requires them to be actually collected before allowing the safe to open.

Fireman Sam

Fireman Sam

Commodore 64 - Released - 1991

Fireman Sam is based on the British animated children's TV show where you are Fireman Sam himself and you must drive around the fictional Welsh town of Pontypandy helping the residents in this top view flick-screen driving game. You start in your fire engine at the station and you are given a job which has to be found and completed before returning to the station while a timer decreases. Jobs you will receive are to put out a fire, get Norman's head out of some railings, remove a kite from a roof or find various objects for other characters like keys and hammers. You have no idea of where the incident or lost item is so you drive around until you find it. Apart from the finding objects, the other jobs when the location is found turns into a single screen side view arcade sequence. You have to waggle the joystick to put out the flames or get Norman's head free, while the kite job has you avoiding objects and climbing a ladder. If you fail a job or run out of time then you have to report back to the station to receive a warning. Get three warnings and it is game over and there are two skill levels (easy or hard).

Flunky

Flunky

Amstrad CPC - Released - 1987

A Flunky is a male servant who must do routine jobs for his masters; in this game you are a Flunky and your masters are the British Royal Family. There are five tasks to be undertaken – light all the fires, fetching a toy boat from the bath for Prince Andrew, some freckles for Fergie, a wig for Diana, and a mystery task for the Queen. To gain access to each room, you need the signatures of particular royals along the way. Flunky is an arcade adventure using the same game system as other Don Priestley's Trapdoor license – large sprites overlaid onto block objects, seemingly designed around Spectrum attribute-clash issues. Many screens operate on more than 1 horizontal plane, so you can move your character in and out of the screens as well as across them. Guards will shoot at you if you attempt to access restricted areas, so be careful.

Formula One

Formula One

Amstrad CPC - Released - 1985

Formula One is a Formula One racing management videogame published in 1985 by CRL Group PLC, developed by G.B. Munday and B.P. Wheelhouse for the ZX Spectrum, and converted to Amstrad CPC by Richard Taylor. Once the game is properly underway, you must buy engine and chassis upgrades, and can improve the quality of your pitcrew - all of which eats into your budget. Your cars must be raceworthy to be able to race. After qualifying you must choose your tyres for each car - rain can be a factor, and the game informs you of the expected conditions before the race. The races are depicted via a timing board which displays the top 6 in the order, images of the cars flashing by (with a distinction made as cars come into the pits), and messages detailing crashes, spins and technical problems. Your drivers can be called in for pitstops, which involves moving a man around to undo each tyre in sequence, which is hardly realistic but does add some arcade skill and variation.

Amstrad CPC - Released - 1989

This (American) football management game uses a menu-driven system. There are 16 teams to choose from; the Dolphins, Packers and 49ers are all in there. Players are rated out of 10 on skill, energy and form. Player trading is handled in a soccer-style transfer market, rather than with a US 'draft' format - mid-season trades for money are common. Matches have no direct tactical input, and are viewed from remote highlight shots, which do not have the distinct pitch markings of the original (an old Softstone game released under three different names).

Hideous

Hideous

Sinclair ZX Spectrum - Released - 1992

Searching for a new power source, scientists have been working on Delta Radiation. This form of radiation is far stronger than thought and has started seeping out of its container. This has caused the underground life forms to mutate. The mutants now want to destroy the plant and the world. You have been chosen to drive a tank and enter the complex to destroy the mutants and to stop the radiation from leaking. There is one source of the leak on four levels and each one must be stopped. To do this, eight lead blocks have to be collected one at a time and placed around the container. Once one container is surrounded then it's onto the next level. Be careful though as your tank has limited fuel and ammo. These can be topped up with icons scattered around the levels. Hideous is a flick screen top down view game. One screen shows a small part of each level. The joystick moves the tank while the fire button fires your weapon. Various doors, paths and icons need to be negotiated to find the lead blocks. As well as your main playing area you can also see your lives, score, ammo and your shield.

Humm-Dinger

Humm-Dinger

Commodore 64 - Released - 1988

Humm-Dinger is a side view horizontal scrolling shooter where the screen scrolls when you move your hero using a Jet-Pack, left or right, blasting waves of aliens. In each wave you must destroy every alien so that it will drop a B icon, and when a certain amount has been collected before they touch the ground you can then face a final wave to destroy. As you move and shoot around the level, you must avoid touching the aliens or their weapons as this decreases an energy gauge faster which is slowly decreasing. When your energy gauge empties then you lose one of four lives. Allowing a B icon to hit the ground also decreases the gauge but some destroyed waves of aliens drops a F icon and when collected fills your energy gauge. Once you have completed a level then you have the chance to get bonus points by collecting all the numbered ions in order before your energy gauge empties but if you collect an icon in the wrong order then the bonus part is over and it's on to the next level.

Also unhealthy are the enemies which attack frontally. If they manage to touch the ship its energy goes down and zero energy results in a life loss. Nosferatu the Vampyre

Nosferatu the Vampyre

Amstrad CPC - Released - 1986

This game shares two major similarities to The Great Escape: Firstly, it's licensed around a venerable film, using the setting to new effect. Secondly, it's isometrically-viewed (with monochrome graphics, even on the capable-of-far-better C64) and features full object interaction of the Filmation style - this is taken further here, as the physics of the objects are varied by their shape and centre of gravity. There are three stages to complete. In the first you play Johnathan Harker, who must retrieve some papers (he works for an Estate Agent's) and escape the castle. The second level introduces Johnathan's wife Lucy, and van Helsing, with play switching between the three. Lucy's role is slightly different as it is she who pursues the vampire itself, and she takes on the task alone in level 3.

Pacmania

Pacmania

Commodore 64 - Released - January 1, 1983

Not to be confused with Pac-Mania by Namco, this is a Pac-Man clone where the object is to eat dots and power pills. Several ghosts appear in their hideout at the center of the maze, and these ghosts will eventually make their way through the maze, chasing Pac-Man wherever he goes. However, eating the power pills cause the ghosts to turn blue, allowing Pac-Man to hunt a ghost down and then eat it for bonus points, which are also awarded for eating a fruit that appears somewhere within the maze. Warp tunnels are located at either side of the screen, and these can be used to get away from ghosts that are on Pac-Man's tail. Besides power pills, also scattered around the maze are white H icons. If Pac-Man comes in contact with any of these icons, he will be teleported to anywhere in the maze. Once Pac-Man eats all the dots and power pills in the maze, he will advance to the next one, whose structure differs from the previous.

In Popeye 2, our spinach lovin' hero must once again rescue Olive Oyl and make mincemeat of Bluto while looking after Swee'Pea, feeding Wimpy and keeping an eye on Jeep. Popeye has four different levels to traverse through. His initial adventure takes him to a construction site where bouncing springs, falling girders and open welding flames impede his progress. Rolling barrels, and bombs which must be touched to be put out also stand to cause harm. In every level scattered hamburgers must be collected in order for Popeye to get past Wimpy who is often hanging out somewhere near the top of every vertically scrolling platform level. There are also feats of strength that Popeye must perform by beating up a punching robot-type thing with the aid of Spinach. Once past all these obstacles Popeye can move on to the next level. The second level takes Popeye into the urban jungle where he must climb the side of the Biff Spinach building and avoid the same obstacles as in the previous levels. In the third level falling girders are replaced with giant bananas as Popeye finds himself in a jungle. Coconut throwing monkeys hang from ledges and snoozing tigers and snakes decorate the trees. The fourth and final level of the game finds Popeye climbing the masts of the S.S. Trev and the S.S. Andy as he makes his way to a final confrontation with Bluto and rescue Olive Oyl. Popeye is able to jump around and occasionally when the situation calls for it punch his way through this vertical platformer. Bonus points are rewarded for finding Swee'Pea and Jeep. He can take multiple hits before he takes a curtain call but thankfully is unharmed by long drops. The player should beware as Popeye has only one life to get through the four levels of this adventure.

Rik the Roadie

Sinclair ZX Spectrum - Released - 1988

You are Rik, roadie to the world famous pop group, "Alternative Rock". In order for Alternative Rock to stay popular, you, as their roadie, must get all their equipment to the gig, take it into the hall, and set up the sound levels before the gig starts. Get to the gig as quickly as possible, avoiding all oncoming traffic. Hitting anything will cost you time, as your van is repaired. Once you are at the gig, you have to carry the equipment from the van into the hall. As amplifiers and speakers are very heavy, you cannot hold them for very long. Move as fast as possible before your endurance runs out, and you drop the very heavy (and expensive) equipment. Next you have to set up the power levels. Too low, and the audience cannot hear the group Too high, and the fuses blow. Keep the levels in the red, and as soon as the optimum level is reached, the next sound channel is automatically selected. Once all four channels have been set, you can sit back, relax and watch your group perform live on stage. Then you have to transport the equipment to the next gig, with less time to complete it in.

River Rescue: Racing Against Time

Commodore 64 - Released - 1984

The player is in charge of a ship on a river, which flows from right to left across the screen, with a view from above. The ship must avoid colliding with the various obstacles on the river - these include small islands, crocodiles and wood logs. The aim of the game is to rescue the explorers dispersed in the jungle. The ship periodically passes near a couple of piers on both sides of the river. If the ship approaches the upper one, an explorer leaves the jungle and gets on the ship. If you approach the lower one instead, all the explorers on the ship are going down, which are considered to be rescued. Due to the automatic scrolling of the screen, it is not possible to stop at both piers at once, you have to pick up the explorer on board and wait for the next dock. Depending on the version and level, you must save between three and five explorers to complete a round. Once a round is complete, the game begins again, but at a higher speed.

Rogue Trooper

Rogue Trooper

Commodore 64 - Released - 1987

On the planet Nu-Earth, the perpetual war between the Norts and the Southers has left the entire world a wasteland. The Southers have developed a new weapon: Genetic Infantrymen (G.I.s), designed to withstand the harsh environmental conditions. On their first mission, however, they are betrayed: the Quartz Zone Massacre leaves only one of them alive. The surviving G.I. goes AWOL, bent on a mission: to prove that there was a betrayal and to bring the traitor to justice. Helping him are three of his former comrades, who survived as biochips: Helm, Gunnar and Bagman. In the first game based on the popular 2000 AD comic strip, the player controls the Rogue Trooper on his mission to find eight vid-tapes which have withstood the destruction and can prove the traitor's involvement. The tapes are scattered over various screens depicting Nu-Earth. Rogue can dispatch Nort soldiers patrolling the area with his gun, while taking care he doesn't get hit too often himself. Nort bunkers also await, being tougher targets than simple soldiers. Supplies in the form of ammunition packs and first aid kits must be found if the need arises. And while Rogue's genetic makeup makes him very tough, he is not invincible: traversing certain types of terrain drains his health automatically. Above the main game window, the screen shows the battle computer, consisting of a map of the surroundings and Rogue's vital statistics and inventory. Another part of the screen is reserved for Rogue's biochip buddies, displaying any comments and remarks they might have on the current situation.
