Fire Galaxy

Fire Galaxy

Commodore VIC-20 - Released - 1983

Fire Galaxy is a clone of Konami's Scramble, with pieces of its follow-up Super Cobra added. The premise is the same as in the original: Fly into a side-scrolling cavern system and shoot everything that moves, while keeping an eye on your fuel level. Drop bombs on fuel silos to avoid crashing. Early enemies are rockets launching from the ground while shooting at you, followed by enemies hovering around in the air, missiles flying fast in your direction, aliens bouncing up and down in your path, a fleet of spaceships and swarms of aliens. Another enemy is the landscape itself. Avoid crashing into the walls of the levels during evasive maneuvers. The landscape never really narrows down like in so many other scramble clones, but instead there are formations like stalactites and stalagmites, much like in Super Cobra. The aliens regenerate unless you pound them repeatedly. Fire Galaxy uses a character based scroller, scrolling in 8-pixel increments, with big sprites on a large screen.

Galactic Abductor

Galactic Abductor

Commodore VIC-20 - Released - 1983

Galactic Abductor(s) is a sci-fi shoot-em-up inspired by the game Stratovox originally conceived for the arcade platform. The player commands a tank armed with a laser cannon that can fire upwards or laterally for both sides depending on the conjugation of keys. The background of the game happens in a planetary surface where the tank is located and where on the right side of the screen at the atmospheric level is situated a sort of satellite hosting several humanoid figures. Flocks of mechanical birds fluttering in the open try to hit the tank either with laser beams or by dropping capsules that will turn into deadly probes which will chase the tank in the ground until it's destroyed. But these are diversion tactics because their main purpose is to abduct the humanoid figures sheltered in the satellite. If one of the laser beams fired by a mechanical bird hits the tank, if one of the terrestrial probes collides with it, or if every humanoid figure present on the satellite is abducted, one of the player's life is lost. To shot down a bird two shots are needed, to destroy a probe either on sky or land one shot, and to release the humanoid entities from the claws of the mechanical birds an accurate shot directly at the figure is required. As soon as the shot accurately hits the figure, he will immediately and safely return to the satellite.

Ice Hunter

Commodore 64 - Released - 1984

Finally, in his search, Thorak has found a multi-level cave containing the blocks he needs for the igloo, so enters to retrieve them. The only way to get the blocks to his site for the igloo is to get two blocks, one at a time, to a stream at the bottom of the cave, then stand on them to float down the stream. The main problem though is the creatures that move around the screen and these have to be avoided or if touched he loses one of four lives. The creatures though can be killed by dropping a block on top of them or allowing them to fall through the gaps. A bird that occasionally appears can be killed if its flight path is blocked. To get the blocks to the bottom of the screen there are platforms over gaps and to get a gap Thorak can walk on the platform to remove it then drop blocks through the gap to the level below. Thorak can't fall through the gaps, or he is killed, but there are pillars that can be climbed up or down. At a certain level in the cave, Thorak can't get back up, so he has to make sure he has two blocks to move to the stream. A power-pill can be collected and these stuns the creatures, which can be touched to remove them. Once the blocks are floated away then it's off to the next cave with more creatures and the levels start to scroll slowly to the left and appear again on the right of the screen.

To kill any creatures you can push blocks of ice towards them to crush them, but if you touch one you lose one of four lives and a new maze layout appears. Skramble

Skramble

Commodore VIC-20 - Released - 1983

A clone of one of the world's most cloned games, Scramble, this is another example with the world's most popular name for Scramble clones, namely Skramble. You fly your spaceship through a cave system split in six sections. Pressing the joystick button will unleash both your front mounted gun and your bombs. Missiles will launch in your path in order to intercept you, and you must not only shoot those down, but also bomb all fuel cisterns you see, or you will run out of fuel. The second cave section introduces aliens that fly up and down in your path. In the third section, you are met by fire balls which are immune to your bullets. The fourth section is played out in a very cramped space, where you have little time to react to the missile launches. Here, the graphical style changes into a more technological one than the natural caves earlier on. The fifth section is equally cramped, but with steep shafts which must be descended into or ascended from with precision, due to the speed at which you are moving. Finally, the sixth section is an infinite loop where you must bomb a single enemy construction before you run out of fuel.

Slap Dab

Slap Dab

Commodore VIC-20 - Released - 1983

Slap Dab is a top down arcade action game where you take the role of Sam the Painter. The point is simply to paint the whole screen. However, it's not as simple as it sounds when you are chased by undercoat monsters who want nothing more than to pull the bristles out of Sam's brush. The monsters can only move on painted areas. From time to time Sam must return to the paint-pot to refill his bucket. Therefore it's necessary to leave some unpainted areas, so you can return to the depot. Naturally, as you progress in the game it gets harder for each new level. You have three lives to your disposal before it's game over.

Space Pilot 2

Space Pilot 2

Commodore 64 - Released - 1985

Space Pilot 2 is the sequel to the C64 game Space-Pilot. While the first game was largely a clone of Konami's Time Pilot, this title moves away from some of the original features. The basic gameplay is still identical. Players command an aircraft through different environments, shooting down planes to collect points. The ship's nose can be rotated left or right, so the craft can move into any direction and take sharp turns left or right. Speed is not controlled by the user and it is always maintained at the same level automatically. The background is wrapped endlessly both horizontally and vertically, and that way it is impossible to encounter a border. The game no longer takes place in distinct time periods and removes the realistic environments. All stages are now set in space with surreal backdrops and in an unknown point in time. To warp to a new period, the player needs to shoot down different kinds of space ships appearing from all directions. Destroying them is rewarded with points and it depletes a time meter in the bottom right corner of the screen. When the meter is completely empty, all opponents disappear and a new stage is entered. At the introduction screen to each stage an overview of possible enemies and the points that go along with them is shown. Occasionally a formation of three identical ships appears and these can be destroyed for bonus points. Enemies try to ram the player's ship and also shoot regular bullets as well as heat-seeking missiles. The player starts with three lives. An extra life is granted at 10,000 points and then at every 30,000 points. There are four main backgrounds and these are repeated over the stages, but with a different colour. Enemies become faster and come in greater numbers in later levels. The game supports up to eight players, taking turns to get the best score.

Starbase Defense

Commodore 64 - Released - 1983

Starbase Defense (Starbase Defence 64, and Astral Attack in Europe) is a single screen 1st person shooter where the alien race XENO have decided to attack our colonies by destroying the Energy Generators. You control a cross-hair and you must protect six generators on the bottom of the screen from the aliens in formation on the top of the screen. Each alien moves down the screen at different times and when they hit a line of energy they turn into a bomb which moves down the screen towards the generators. You can only shoot the aliens when they have turned into bombs and when they hit a generator then it is destroyed. When all the aliens have either been shot or hit the ground then they reappear but destroyed generators stay destroyed. It is game over when all the generators have been destroyed. The game allowed you to either use a joystick or a Stack Light Rifle to control the cross-hair but the re-release by Omega Software removed the option of the rifle.

The items you can buy include sword, lantern, spells and a suit of armour. Once you are ready with your selection and purchases, it's off into the dungeon. In each room of the dungeon, you are able to see any exits and items inside the room and you type in a letter to tell the computer your next action. This can include moving in a certain direction, saying spells, opening items and many others. Creatures also appear and you can attack them before they attack you and weaken or kill you. You always look in each room in the direction you are moving so for example North can be in a different direction than up.
