0 & X

0 & X

Commodore 64 - Released - 1986

0 and x is a 3D version of Tic-Tac-Toe or Noughts and Crosses, where you have to make a row of X's in a vertical, horizontal or diagonal line before the computer makes a row. Instead of making a row off three on a 3 x 3 grid you now have to make a row off four on a 4 x 4 grid on four boards so as well as watching for a line on one board, you have to watch out for a row that appears in the same place on all four boards.

64 Dragonmaster

Commodore 64 - Released - 1983

COMPUTE! 1983/10 (Issue #41). In this fast-action adventure game, your mission is to maneuver through the countryside until you reach the castle and save the princess - if you can. There are all sorts of dragons you must first conquer and a wily, evil wizard in steady pursuit. The game has four difficulty levels. This game involves three courageous knights who have returned home from war only to find that the countryside surrounding their castle is infested with dragons that were placed there by an evil wizard. Trapped inside the castle is the beautiful princess, who anxiously awaits the first knight who can rescue her. One at a time, the kinghts try to slay all the dragons and enter the castle to save the princess. The knights quickly discover the many dangers of the hunt. A dragon will eat anyone who comes near its head. The only way to get rid of one is to zap in the stomach. Guarding the castle is a phantom dragon that can only be eliminated when all the others have been overcome (The castle drawbridge will remain closed until he is conquered). At times a dragon will appear from nowhere, and occasionally a dragon you thought you'd disposed of sill reappear to have another try at the knight. And last, but certainly not the easiest of the perils, is the evil wizard himself, who chases the knights as they hunt the dragons. If the wizard catches a knight, the knight is destroyed. - How to Play - Manoeuvre your knight through the countryside with the joystick. You are allowed three knights at the start, but watch out, the knights can be consumed very quickly by a dragon. When you encounter a dragon, you must act quickly. Using the fire button, aim at the dragon's stomach, this is the only vulnerable spot. You have no defense against the evil wizard except speed. You must be constantly aware of his distance from you. Remember, if he catches you, your knight is destroyed. Also released on The Big 100 and King Size collections in Europe under the name Dragons.

Alien Armada

Alien Armada

Commodore 64 - Released - 1985

Published in COMPUTE!'s Gazette 1985/05 (Issue #23), also in Jim Green PD Disk #53 (1990/08), in Super VIC & C64 A3-N01 (January 1986), and also in the 75 Spill Datatronic collection. If you like the fast action of arcade games like Space Invaders, you'll like "Alien Armada." The original version, written by a 14-year-old, demonstrates the versatile sound and graphics available on the C64. They told you it would be easy, farming on the planet Scelor. All you'd have to do is direct the agribots to plant the seeds in the spring and harvest the valuable crop in the autumn. There are no aliens within hundreds of light years, they said. As the shuttle pilot dropped you off, she wished you good luck. You're going to need good luck. The day after you landed, the aliens came. First the mothership, which apparently opened up a space warp from another dimension. Then, row after row of menacing droids. Thinking quickly, you equipped each of your robots with a laser to send the invaders back to their own dimension. The droids don't actually attack you; they simply hover in the sky, waiting to land. But they drop smartbombs, which are impervious to lasers. Your only defense is to move out of the way. The mothership also releases birds that home in on your robots. As the birds descend, they drop slow-moving bombs. Fortunately, you can shoot the birds and their bombs. Your ultimate goal in "Alien Armada" is to get to the source of the invading aliens: the ominous mothership. If you can hit it with a single laser shot, you'll send it (and the droids) back to its own dimension. But it's not an easy task. You must first eliminate the droids who guard the mothership. Each changes three times before being sent back home. Published in COMPUTE!'s Gazette 1985/05 (Issue #23), Jim Green PD Disk #53 (1990/08), Super VIC & C64 A3-N01 (January 1986) / 75 Spill Datatronic and published as Spy Attack and Alien Attack by Wicked Software.

Spy vs Spy

Spy vs Spy

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1989

MAD magazine’s comic strip of the same name comes to life in this game which was designed for one or two players. The split-screen shows both spies at the same time. Play with a friend or against the machine. The black spy and the white spy are out to outsmart each other before the time bell rings. Find the needed objects (money, passport, secret plans and airport door key) by searching rooms in the embassy, which include desks, file cabinets and other furniture. Foil your opponent by setting creative booby traps in the various rooms (a bomb in a dresser drawer, for instance). Traps can be disarmed with objects found in rooms (a water bucket from a firebox on the wall will disarm the bomb in the prior example). When all the items are together in the secret briefcase, head for the airport door.

Spy vs Spy II: The Island Caper

Spy vs Spy II: The Island Caper

Commodore Amiga - 1989

A follow-up to the first Spy vs Spy game now sees the spies stranded on a desert island. This time, instead of the four items which allow you to leave for the airport, the spies must try to collect three pieces of a missile and escape from the island in a waiting submarine before a volcano erupts. There are a few pitfalls to avoid such as quicksand and sharks. There are also new traps (hidden pits, napalm, snares and a pistol) and hand-to-hand combat is done with swords instead of clubs.

Spy vs Spy III: Arctic Antics

Spy vs Spy III: Arctic Antics

Commodore Amiga - 1989

With characters Taken from MAD Magazine, the Spy Vs. Spy series reached it's end in Arctic Antics. Spy vs Spy: Arctic Antics is an Action/Arcade game, for one or two players, developed by First Star Software and published by Wicked Soft. Released in the UK in 1989 for several contemporary platforms. The duo, the White Spy (you) and the deadly Black Spy continue their battle. This time, the scrap takes place in the frozen Arctic, the objective: Find the essential components of a brand new rocket before you freeze to death! And more importantly, before your opponent -- the deadly Black Spy -- escapes his own fate or completes the mission instead! Your body temp. is effectively your health. You can get warmer by popping into an Igloo and standing by the fire for a few moments. Remember though! You've only a limited time to complete your mission, so don't dally! Overall this game is quite fun, if lacking staying power, being the same thing over and over. It's main saving grace is the two-player option. Without it, the game just isn't as funny. I mainly played two-player and then ran through, completing, each difficulty. At higher difficulties it does present a challenge, but I don't think I'll be playing this game as often as others that are similar, due to the repetitive game-play and fiddly controls.

Spy vs Spy: Arctic Antics

Atari ST - Released - 1988

The third and final installment (after Spy vs. Spy and Spy vs. Spy: The Island Caper) sees the spies on an iceberg. They're seeking items (gyroscope, fuel canister, key card) and then seeking to leave via a rocket-ship before a blizzard sets in. New trap items include a saw (for cutting holes in ice), a plunger detonator (with dynamite), an ice pick and snowshoes. There are some pitfalls (thin ice and snow drifts). Hand-to-hand combat is done with snowballs. Watch your spy's body heat or he'll become a permanent resident.

Twylyte

Twylyte

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1989

Twylyte is an arcade 3D shoot-em-up in the tradition of Space Harrier and Backlash. The player drives towards the horizon continuously at enormous speed. There are indestructible barriers which the invisible player ship must avoid contact with, as well as enemies shooting and firing missiles at the player. Beside moving left and right, the ship can also moved up and down, which adds further possibilities to evade the barriers, but also makes it difficult to shot at moving enemies at different height. The key goal in the game is energy. You lose energy on getting hit, and if the energy falls to low, you even cannot shoot back. If it drops completely, the game is over. Gaining energy can be achieved by collecting green energy blocks and at special stages, in which energy blocks can be collected between barriers without moving enemies. The hint to the energy stones is the radar, on which dots indicate upcoming objects. The graphics are drawn as polygons, although you can optionally switch to wireframe graphics. Only rare enemy objects are rotating, most static elements are just zooming perspectively, giving the impression of zooming sprites.
