187: Ride or Die

Microsoft Xbox - Released - August 23, 2005

In order to become "top dog" of the game the player must race and defeat opponents through a variety of different stages all set in Los Angeles's infamous South Central region. The game's title comes from two phrases common in the subculture. 187 is the California Penal Code section that defines murder. It has come into general use among gangs in the United States as a synonym for murder, and this usage has passed into popular culture via gangsta rap. "Ride or die" is a combination of the phrases "ride it out" and "die trying", meaning one is willing to do anything even if it involves personal risk. Alexander

Alexander

Windows - November 23, 2004

Alexander is an RTS based on the movie of the same same, and the real-life Alexander the Great. The game follows the same general path as the movie, and includes media straight from the film. Present in the game are Greek, Persian, Indian and Egyptian forces, with a campaign for each. The hybrid 2D/3D engine (2D units, 3D terrain - also used in Cossacks 2: Napoleonic Wars) allows for a very large number of troops on the field. This is used to good effect, as battles can easily contain hundreds of units. Finally, multiplayer and skirmish levels are available, and the soundtrack (of the game and the movie) is by the composer Vangelis. The actual goals for each mission vary, but they all are of the "Destroy/Survive/Escort" variety. Still, the scale of the battles is interesting, as is the opportunity to replay some of the great battles of Alexander's rule.

Befriended by the natives of the region, he witnessed a strange ritual involving a giant egg of the famed white birds. Wanting to prove that the white birds existed, Alexandre betrayed the natives' trust and stole the mysterious egg. Alas, upon his returning to France, nobody believed Alexandre or his journals about the Amerzone. Sixty years have passed, and the world has changed. World War II has come and gone, the Amerzone remains unexplored and closed off to outsiders by its despotic leader, Antonio Álvarez. Monsieur Alexandre Valembois is an old man at the end of his life, living alone in a lighthouse and wishing to fix his mistake. At this time, a young reporter comes to visit the old Alexandre Valembois regarding his adventures... Amerzone was designed by Benoît Sokal and developed by Microïds, who later developed the critically acclaimed Syberia and its sequel Syberia II. These games contain references to Amerzone and take place in the same fictional universe. The places, concepts and some of the characters featured in Amerzone originate from Sokal's work in the 1980s with the comic Inspector Canardo, especially the fifth story in the series, L'Amerzone. The game was generally positively received at the time, with critics praising its top-grade graphical quality and the scenario's quality and depth. However, many also pointed an awkward player interface, aggravated by an absence of game manual, along with being too short and too easy, while proponents of the game claimed it was into its genre average

Anno 1404

Anno 1404

Windows - Released - June 23, 2009

We write the year 1404 and the emperor is sick. Only the horizon promises healing so Lord Richard Northburgh attempts the journey to the unknown lands in the south known only as the Orient. Following with a small ship, only a few supplies and a handful of loyal man is the player. Looking for a destiny in these uncharted waters, he will find new lands, new cultures, new allies, new friends and new challenges. To fulfill his objective and meanwhile even uncover a full-blown conspiracy, the player once again needs to build up a city from the ground to a flourishing metropolis. Of course that's not as easy as it sounds. While the player places houses, factories and builds the roads (once every building has to have a road-connection), the city needs citizens to work. But as the player's city grows, so do the needs of his citizens. While the countrymen are already happy with a house over their head, some fish and a market place, the noblemen won't settle for less than big city wares like glasses, wine or fur before they even dare to stop wining. To make things even more complicated, not all resources are available on every island. So the player either needs to expand onto other islands where he can grow coffee or other high quality products, or has to go trade with the other factions roaming around the map. Of course not all of those are friendly although the military doesn't play such a big role in Anno 1404 but still there are ship battles to be fought and other cities to be conquered. Although, as opposed to 1701 A.D., this time around the player just builds on of three buildings instead of ordering groups of land units around in order to defend his island. Once the building has received its attack orders, it still sends out soldiers but they can't be controlled by the player. To keep the player interested in both the campaign and the unlimited play, side-quests are available that are often difficult to complete but always offer a great reward. In addition unlimited play offers a new endgame quest which requires the player to build a monument like a cathedral. This not only takes much time but also an unbelievable amount of several different kinds of resources in addition of a high-level-city.

Anno 2070

Anno 2070

Windows - Released - November 17, 2011

Anno 2070 is an economy centred build-up strategy game that blends city buildings with resource management and diplomacy. It is the first game in the series to take place in the future instead of a historical setting in the past. The player has to harvest resources by placing a set of buildings (production chains) that will supply the town with goods needed by the population. Fulfilling the populations demands leads to them advancing to a higher level and unlocking more building options. The game is set in a semi-realistic future setting where the polar caps have melted and the sea levels have risen. The known structures of national states seem to have crumbled, however the game does not offer a specific explanation about the past. Each game starts with a game world consisting of islands, that can be colonized or tapped for resources. Two main factions are competing with each other, and the player has to choose one to start with, though eventually ending up with the possibility to build the buildings of both factions. While game's core elements stay the same, the "Global Trust" faction, also called "Tycoons" offers a rather industrial approach, making use of polluting factories and old fashioned technology, where the "Eden Initiative" steers into a more ecological direction, offering the player to use buildings like "weather control stations" or "Ozone Makers" to influence the eco-balance of his islands. The eco-balance is represented numerically and changing it changes the game-world visually, meaning a polluted island will be foggy while a clean island will appear bright and shiny. Furthermore gameplay is bound to the eco-balance, which means that polluted islands will suffer decreased productivity in agricultural areas and island inhabitants will be unhappy, resulting in less tax pay. At a later stage the player has the optional possibility to unlock a third faction, which is called "S.A.A.T.", or generally "The Techs" which enables to dive below the oceans surface and build production facilities on underwater plateaus. This faction also offers ways to produce items that increase the efficiency of different aspects of the game, like researching damage bonuses for your ships or items that reduce the upkeep cost of the production yards. Furthermore the Tech faction will grant access to some air units and submarines, while the main factions only offer battleships for sea combat. Several AI players are available that can be traded with, or battled. Each AI comes with a set of diplomacy options, like requesting a supporting fleet or requesting a quest to solve. Quests consist of small tasks that could be an escort of a trade ship or picking up crates from a certain spot on the ocean. While military, diplomacy and quests are short term diverting options, the main focus of the game clearly is in the management of goods, creating transport routes between islands and building a city. The game also offers a campaign that tells a story about an artificial intelligence going mad. Generally speaking, the campaign acts more like a tutorial, where only the last of three chapters can be called challenging. It introduces the game to the player and explains the mentality of Global Trust, the Eden Initiative and S.A.A.T.

Anno 2205

Anno 2205

Windows - Released - November 3, 2015

Anno 2205 is an economy builder where the player has to supply an ever-growing populace with goods and services. The gameplay consists of constructing production chains, creating logistic routes and keeping gains and expenses in balance. It also contains separate real time strategy maps where players control a fleet of ships to attack or defend objectives. It is set on an alternative earth in the year 2205, continuing the timeline from its predecessor Anno 2070. Energy and resources have become scarce, and players are tasked to create a corporation that aims to establish a moon base and solve the global energy crisis. Following the plot, they need to construct cities and bases in temperate and arctic regions before launching shuttles to the moon.

Asphalt: Urban GT 2

Asphalt: Urban GT 2

Sony PSP - Released - March 22, 2007

The sequel to Asphalt: Urban GT continues the fast-paced racing of the original game with various additions. Races take place on eight locations all over the world. While racing, smashing other cars, or avoiding the police, there is cash to collect. Money becomes available by risky driving, wiping out opponents or cops, or by picking up items. When a certain cash level is reached, new elements are opened up, such as parts to tune the car (for free), new tracks, new vehicles, or a new game mode. For the first time in the series, bikes are also available. While racing, a boost meter can be built up by picking up specific items or taking out other cars. A double boost can be applied for high speeds, while a double tap to the right or the left makes the car drift. By ignoring all driving regulations, a wanted meter slowly builds up. The cops will chase with regular patrol cars, helicopters, or they will set up a road block. The game offers 4 modes: Evolution: race for the first place. Duel: race against a single opponent, with a bet. The higher the prize, the tougher the cops are. Beat 'Em All: win the race by wiping out all opponents before the finish line is reached. Cop Chase: play as patrol car and wipe out all illegal racers. The game's theme song is a digitized version of Moby's Lift Me Up (which is also the intro music for UK TV's Formula One racing coverage) and the girls of the pop group The Pussycat Dolls make an appearance before and after each race.

Asphalt: Urban GT 2

Asphalt: Urban GT 2

Nintendo DS - Released - November 30, 2005

The gameplay of Urban GT 2 is often compared to Burnout, Need for Speed and other titles because players can eliminate opponents by bumping them, as well as avoiding the police. There is a wanted meter which determines the awareness level of the police, much like the wanted level system in Grand Theft Auto - if the red "WANTED" light flashes, it usually means that the players must do what it takes to avoid the police - otherwise they might be forced to pull over and lose their money. The game features a special appearance from The Pussycat Dolls, and a sample of Moby's single "Lift Me Up".

Assassin's Creed

Assassin's Creed

Sony Playstation 3 - Released - November 13, 2007

In the year 2012, a seemingly ordinary bartender named Desmond Miles is abducted by a mysterious organization. The captors attach Desmond to a strange device called "Animus", which allows him to access the memory of his ancestor, an assassin named Altaïr. For some reason, the reconstruction of Altaïr's memories is vital to the captors. After accessing Altaïr's memory, Desmond is able to experience the events that took place in the Holy Land in the year 1191, the time of the Third Crusade. Al Mualim, the leader of the assassins, orders Altaïr to kill nine prominent historical figures, who supposedly let war and corruption take over the Holy Land. During most of the game, the player controls Altaïr; however, it is clearly indicated that controlling him is a part of Desmond's experience. The player is also able to control Desmond between his sessions in the "Animus". The game's most innovative feature is the freedom of choice and movement. Every architectural detail like window ledges, carvings in the stone or wooden bars can be used to move on the walls. This allows the player to have intense chase scenes if by any chance you're hunted by the guard. There are several ways you can reach your goal in the game. Using eavesdropping, interrogation and pickpocketing, you can find out information about your next target. You can then use this information to choose whether you take on the targets by full frontal assault or with a properly placed throwing knife from the cover of the rooftops. Depending on your choice, you'll have to deal with the citizens and knights of the cities who will become suspicious of a cloaked person wondering on the rooftops or near the mission targets. There are several situations where you can blend in the crowd, with luck, you can take out your target without anyone looking your way. Altaïr has a small but effective arsenal of weapons, such as swords and throwing knives and he can learn new combat skills to help him on his mission.

Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China

Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China

Windows - Released - April 21, 2015

Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China is the first game of three in the Chronicles spin-off series based on the main Assassin's Creed franchise. It is a 2.5D platform game similar to the earlier Assassin's Creed II: Discovery. The game is set in China in 1526 with Shao Jun as the protagonist, a character that was earlier introduced in the short film Assassin's Creed: Embers. Set two years after the events of the film, Shao Jun is one of the few remaining Assassins of the Chinese Brotherhood. Her brotherhood was wiped out by Zhang Yong, the leader of a group of eunuchs known as the Tigers, which are in fact Templars controlling the emperor as a puppet. Her new leader Wang Yangming calls her back to China to push back the Templar influence. She brings along the Precursor artifact given to her by Ezio Auditore. At the start of the game she lets herself be captured to infiltrate a former Assassins stronghold now controlled by the Tigers. The game has a linear side-scrolling design, but with a lot of vertical movement. At times it is possible to move to a plane in the background and Jun can hide in alcoves or pass unnoticed by hanging from ledges. The game brings over the parkour movement of the main series with jumping, crouching, vaulting, sliding, sprinting, platform sections and more. Although a combat approach is possible, the game encourages the use of stealth. Each level is split up into multiple sections and based on the stealth performance (times seen, times alerted, assassinations and combat kills) one of three Shadow Style ratings is awarded along with a number of points that act as experience to access upgrades such as increased health. Enemies have a visible awareness cone based on line of sight. Next to white that shows the reach of their sight, there is a yellow state where guards investigate and a red state where they alert others and attack. Jun has a large amount of abilities to wield stealth. She can take cover in alcoves and assassinate from there and assassinate from ledges. Guards spot bodies so these need to be hidden in alcoves or green chests. Enemies can be distracted with a dog whistle, triggering a yellow awareness state and the player can determine the position, reach and strength. There are sometimes dogs that need to be avoided as the barking will draw guards. The game has minor puzzle elements to progress with levers and objects that can be interacted with. In complex situations with multiple guards their patrol paths need to be taken into account. The game brings over the eagle vision feature from the main series where paths become visible through bright colours. Jun can assassinate with a hidden shoe blade, but she can also engage in regular combat with a sword using mechanics to perform two types of attacks, block and roll over. It is also possible to block backwards and dodge bullets. Various gadgets are unlocked gradually, such as daggers to trigger wind chimes or attack from a distance, noise darts, firecrackers that stun, a grappling hook etc. Additional abilities such as dashing between hiding places become available gradually. After each level a number of upgrades can be unlocked. There are also secondary objectives and optional hidden collectibles. Just like the main games it is presented as an Animus simulation so Jun cannot die, but desynchronizes. Also carried over from the main games is the Animus database where descriptions about people and locations are stored as they are encountered. Next to the normal mode a plus and plus hard mode can be unlocked. Existing abilities and upgrades are carried over, but in plus hard for instance Jun has only a single health bar and enemies react faster.

Assassin's Creed Chronicles: India

Assassin's Creed Chronicles: India

Windows - Released - January 12, 2016

Assassin's Creed Chronicles: India is the second game in the Assassin's Creed Chronicles trilogy, a spin-off of based on the main Assassin's Creed franchise. After China as a new setting in the first game, this title takes place in India in 1841 during the time the Sikh Empire was at war with the East India Company. The protagonist is the Assassin Arbaaz Mir who is in love with the princess Pyara Kaur. He has stolen the Koh-I-Noor diamond from the Maharajah's palace and his mentor Hamid believes it is a powerful item. The British troops strengthen their influence in the region, steered by infiltrated Templar agents and they also want the diamond back. Mir not only has to fight the Templars, but also needs to protect his master, the diamond and his lover. Just like the first game it is a 2.5D side-scrolling platform title that heavily encourages stealth, but does not force it as combat is also often an option. There are sections where small 3D moments come into play, for instance by hanging from windows where guards pass in hallways, paths and ziplines that lead to other layers in the background, and walls and hiding places that can be climbed or used in multiple directions. Combat is done with a sword with various moves to dash, slide, block, dodge bullets, roll and strike with a light or heavy attack. There is only a small amount of health and Mir is quickly overwhelmed. While sneaking enemies can be distracted using noise bombs, smoke bombs, chakrams as a throwing weapon, for instance to slice ropes from a distance, or by whistling. Sneaking is usually done based on line of sight, shown as a cone, but certain sections also have noisy floors where only slow movement is allowed. It is possible to hide in alcoves and steal from enemies if they are not watching. Loot provides additional ammo, keys or documents. Enemies can be choked with a non-lethal takedown and the bodies can be dragged to a different location. Mir can also use a grappling hook to hoist himself up. Tigers and birds play an important role as they can alert many guards at once. Once detected a timer counts down before every guard involved returns from a 'panicked/alerted' to an 'investigative' state, providing a small amount of time for Mir to find a safe spot. Just like the first game the player is rated based on how well stealth is applied. The level score combined with style bonuses unlocks perks and new abilities. Optionally chests with items can be opened and Animus shards can be collected. Next to the main game, divided into multiple levels with checkpoints and story sequences in between, there are separate missions in the Challenge Room section, based on three types: Assassinations, Collect and Contracts.

Assassin's Creed Chronicles: Russia

Assassin's Creed Chronicles: Russia

Windows - Released - January 12, 2016

Assassin's Creed Chronicles: Russia is the third game in the Assassin's Creed Chronicles trilogy, a spin-off of based on the main Assassin's Creed franchise. After China and India as settings in the previous games, this one is set in Russia in 1918. Nikolaï Orelov is tasked by the Brotherhood to retrieve a mysterious box from the family of the Tsar, who are held captive by the Bolsheviks. During his mission, he saves the young Duchess Anastasia, who reveals surprising and mysterious powers. Nikolaï realizes that the Duchesses life will be sacrificed if delivered to his own order. He must choose between protecting the innocent life of a surrogate daughter, becoming the marked man by both the Templars and the Assassins, or getting his hands dirty for the greater good. Just like the previous titles it is a 2.5D side-scrolling game that mixes a stealth approach with combat, solving small environmental puzzles along the way and using a variety of gadgets and weapons. Unlike in the previous two games, Orelov relies on his rifle with a mounted bayonet instead of a sword, but the effect is the same as he can perform a stealth kill, strike with it, jump kill, and additionally he can fire at the enemy which doesn't require of him to carry throwing knives or chakram as assassins from earlier ear. Bullets, as well as other gadgets and ammo that needs to be resupplied can be found in containers or by looting an enemy guard. New equipment for Orelov includes a winch which lets him pry open various locks and gates by firing a grappling hook at it and pulling it quickly a few times. Additionally, the winch can send an electrical discharge to deactivate electrical traps. Hiding behind covers or in alcoves, using smoke bombs for distraction, performing map synchronization in places from which a leap of faith can be performed in order to display the location of secret items on the map, and general movement in all six directions is done in almost the same way as in previous two games. And just as before, as the story progresses, different, more elite types of soldiers will enter the scene. They will be able to perform different kinds of attacks as well as defend against certain types of Orelov's moves, for example soldiers wearing gas masks cannot be affected by smoke bombs, or soldiers wearing armor cannot be harmed by bullets. Weapons and warfare are shaped to fit the timeline and as such there may be new obstacles to encounter, such as land mines which are deactivated when a guard is crossing them, leaving you a close window to sneak past unnoticed, or kill the guard and just carry him on your back while crossing over the mine. The sniping which was briefly introduced near the end of the previous game, is heavily emphasized here and you can perform it using your own rifle at specified sniper nests. During sniping the game shifts to a 1st-person perspective and allows you to zoom in on your target. Sniping sequences doesn't cost the player any bullets despite the use of the same rifle. Certain guards may be out of sight or in a group which makes it impossible to pass the level without distracting them first. This can be done by shooting anywhere near them in order to get them to investigate the place of the bullet ricochet. After Orelov saves Anastasia, the game takes a turn unlike to that of its predecessors, giving the players two characters to control. Due to an unknown phenomenon which occurs when the mysterious box comes in touch with Orelov's necklace, Anastasia occasionally gets possessed by Shao Jun, the protagonist from Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China which turns her into a deadly assassin and slowly starts to affect the real Anastasia by turning her from prey into a huntress. While the player cannot control the characters simultaneously or switch at will, both characters are interchangeably controllable throughout the story, often providing assistance and covering fire to one another.

Assassin's Creed II

Assassin's Creed II

Sony Playstation 3 - Released - November 13, 2009

Desmond Miles, the last in the line of the ancient order of Assassins, has been captured by the modern-day descendants of the Templars, forced to experience past events through a device called Animus in order to obtain crucial information. However, one of the scientists unexpectedly switches sides, asking Desmond to put his trust in her hands and follow her out of the complex. Soon afterwards they escape the holding place and team up with some new allies that intend to use Desmond's knowledge against the Templars. Their new device is called Animus 2.0, an upgraded version of the original. This time, Desmond relives the life of Ezio Auditore di Firenze, a man who lived in Italy in the 15th century. Ezio is a boisterous, seemingly carefree young man who likes to pick fights and chase skirts. But all that changes when his father and little brother are publicly executed by a man he trusted. Driven by vengeance, Ezio begins to discover more about his father's life, and realizes that he, too, belonged to the organization of the Assassins. Ezio becomes a skillful assassin himself, and is ready to go all the way to avenge the death of the people he loved. Assassin's Creed II is a free-roaming action game very similar in concept and gameplay mechanics to its predecessor. The events of the game take place in Florence, Venice, Rome, and other locations in Italy. Besides fictional characters, the game has famous historical figures from the time period, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Niccolò Machiavelli, Cesare Borgia and others, who play an active role in the game's story. Authentic cultural and political environment of the Italian Renaissance is represented in the game along with fictitious accounts of the events, alternate history, and metaphysical theories. The core gameplay resembles that of the previous game. The protagonist can freely explore several large cities and rural locations on foot or on horseback. It is also possible to swim and navigate boats in the game. Nearly every building can be climbed on, and the protagonist can access the tallest rooftops, observing the panorama with his Eagle Vision. Free-form jumping and running occupies a considerable portion of the gameplay. One of the sequel's most notable additions is the financial system, which was not present in the first game. Items, weapons and armor can be bought in shops and repaired for money. There are many more weapon types and individual weapons and armor in the game. Ezio can carry swords, daggers, throwing knives, smoke bombs, a pistol, and a variety of upgradeable armor types. Weapons can also be picked up from fallen enemies and used in the same battle. Abundant treasure can be collected from various spots in the game world. There are new ways of being stealthy in this sequel. Ezio can pay courtesans to distract guards, hire mercenaries to fight them, or commission thieves to create a distraction. Mission objectives and particularly the steps needed to accomplish them are noticeably more varied than in the previous game. The protagonist often receives new equipment and new challenges to experiment with. A few of these are built like mini-games: for example, at one point Ezio will pilot a flying device. The main character has his own headquarters in the game, a mansion and a small town adjacent to it. It is possible to invest money into the town's reconstruction, as well as customize the mansion. The game features a significantly larger amount of side quests than its predecessor. A series of sub-quests involves locating, collecting and deciphering ancient words of wisdom that supposedly hold the secret of the universe. These quests often involve traversing complex indoor platform environments in order to reach the goal. These sequences require precise jumping and contain light puzzle-solving elements, similarly to contemporary Prince of Persia games.

Assassin's Creed III

Windows - Released - November 20, 2012

Assassin's Creed III is a 2012 action-adventure video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and Microsoft Windows. It is the fifth major installment in the Assassin's Creed series, and a direct sequel to 2011's Assassin's Creed: Revelations. The game was released worldwide for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, beginning in North America on October 30, 2012, with a Wii U and Microsoft Windows release in November 2012. The plot is set in a fictional history of real-world events and follows the centuries-old struggle between the Assassins, who fight for peace with free will, and the Templars, who desire peace through control. The framing story is set in the 21st century and features series protagonist Desmond Miles who, with the aid of a machine known as the Animus, relives the memories of his ancestors to find a way to avert the 2012 apocalypse. The story is set in the 18th century, before, during and after the American Revolution from 1754 to 1783, and follows Desmond's half-English, half-Mohawk ancestor, Ratonhnhaké:ton, also known as Connor, as he fights the Templars' attempts to gain control in the colonies. Assassin's Creed III is set in an open world and presented from the third-person perspective with a primary focus on using Desmond and Connor's combat and stealth abilities to eliminate targets and explore the environment. Connor is able to freely explore 18th-century Boston, New York City, and the American frontier to complete side missions away from the primary storyline. The game also features a multiplayer component, allowing players to compete online to complete solo and team-based objectives including assassinations and evading pursuers. Ubisoft developed a new game engine, Anvil Next, for the game.

Assassin's Creed III: Liberation HD

Assassin's Creed III: Liberation HD

Sony Playstation 3 - Released - January 14, 2014

The game takes place in Louisiana near the end of the French and Indian War, where France's defeat caused the city of New Orleans to be taken over by the Spanish government. The citizens were upset over the transition from French to Spanish control and Spain's new occupation within the city. However, in 1765, the French governor Jean-Jacques Blaise d'Abbadie made a negotiation with Templar Rafael Joaquín de Ferrer to stay as governor of New Orleans. This plot was later uncovered by the Assassin Aveline de Grandpré, who infiltrated the governor's mansion and assassinated him. Following this, de Ferrer made a deal with a man named Baptiste, who was hoping to defect from the Assassins to the Templar Order. Baptiste pretended to act as the recently deceased François Mackandal, as a ruse to attract followers to his cause. He planned to poison New Orleans' nobles and take control of smuggling operations within the Louisiana Bayou. However, his sole purpose was to force Agaté, Assassin and mentor to Aveline, out of hiding in the bayou. Aveline tracked him down, however, killing his followers and assassinating the false Mackandal. In 1766, the Templar Antonio de Ulloa arrived in New Orleans, to serve as the Spanish governor. However, he left control of the area to French officials and allowed the French flag to remain over the city. Two years afterwards, he made strict trade restrictions and set up a covert slave-trading operation to transport slaves to a Templar worksite in Mexico, creating a rebellion among French officials and the citizens of New Orleans. Agaté ordered Aveline to assassinate de Ulloa to eradicate Templar presence in New Orleans. Aveline ambushed de Ulloa's carriage and confronted the governor, who told her that slaves had been taken to Chichén Itzá. However, Aveline spared his life and let Ulloa leave the city, in return for a lens used to decode Templar documents and a map leading her to the Templar worksite in Chichén Itzá. Aveline's act of mercy destroyed any trust Agaté had in his student, as she had disobeyed his explicit orders. Against her mentor's wishes, Aveline disguised herself as a slave bound for Mexico and made her way to the Templar worksite at Chichén Itzá. Whilst there, she came across a defiant slave who mentioned that Jeanne, Aveline's mother, was stationed in Chichén Itzá. Aveline investigated thoroughly and uncovered a page from Jeanne's diary and a map that lead to an artifact located inside a cenote. Upon exploring this cave system, she came across an ancient chamber filled with ruins from the First Civilization, along with a fragment of the artifact she was searching for, known as the Prophecy Disk. Shortly after Aveline had acquired the artifact, de Ferrer, who was supervising the Templar worksite at Chichén Itzá, broke through into the chamber. However, Aveline overpowered his soldiers and killed him. At the end of the tunnels, she found Jeanne, who realized that her daughter was an Assassin and believed that Agaté had sent Aveline to kill her. She fled, though not before warning Aveline that the Prophecy Disk should never reach Agaté. After two years of absence, Aveline returned to New Orleans to find that Spanish control was strong. After speaking to fellow Assassin Gérald Blanc, she learned that someone was bribing Spanish soldiers. Upon investigating, Aveline discovered that a man by the name of Vázquez was using Spanish soldiers to seize control of the bayou and take control of the bayou's smuggling operations, which would eventually lead him to discover the location of Agaté. Believing him to be the "Company Man", the head Templar of Louisiana, who de Ferrer mentioned in Chichén Itzá, Aveline immediately hurried to Agaté's hut to warn him of the threat posed by Vázquez's soldiers. Agaté told her to use the power of voodoo to spook the Spanish soldiers into abandoning their mission. Using her blowpipe, Aveline poisoned enough of Vázquez's soldiers so that the rest believed they were cursed and fled the bayou. Aveline returned to Chichén Itzá and made peace with her mother, who directed her to a canoe inside another cenote. Aveline navigated her way through the cenote and retrieved the final piece of the Prophecy Disk. She offered to bring her mother back to New Orleans, but Jeanne decided to stay behind to take care of the community, which was now rid of Templar influence. Aveline returned to New Orleans, continuously working to free slaves in the city. Her stepmother, Madeleine de l'Isle, became aware of her work and asked her to help a slave named George escape north. Aveline found a safe passage through the bayou for George to leave through. Whilst escorting him through the swamp, she met with her smuggler allies Élise Lafleur and Roussillon, helping them to deliver supplies to American patriots who were fighting in the American Revolutionary War. Vázquez attempted to stop Aveline and her allies by sending Spanish soldiers their way, but failed. Aveline defeated Vázquez's soldiers and ensured George and the supplies reached their destination. After returning to the city, Aveline dressed herself in a noblewoman outfit and attended a governor's ball, in hopes that Vázquez would be there. After speaking with several guests, she located Vázquez and asked him to dance. Using her charm, she managed to assassinate him. However, to her surprise, Vázquez revealed that he was not the Company Man. Aveline next spoke to Gérald, who told her that a Templar working for the Company Man had been found on the New York frontier. Aveline learned that the Templar was Officer Davidson, a Loyalist soldier of the Ethiopian Regiment. Aveline reached the New York frontier in 1777 and met Connor, a half Mohawk, half British Assassin fighting the Templars during the American Revolution. Aveline and Connor made their way through the frontier to a fort where Officer Davidson was located. Connor distracted the guards and allowed Aveline to slip inside the fort. She confronted Officer Davidson, shocked to learn that he was actually George, the escaped slave she had helped flee north. He attempted to escape, but Aveline managed to shoot his carriage and prevent his departure. From him, Aveline finally discovered the identity of the Company Man: Madeleine de L'Isle, her stepmother. Upon returning to Louisiana, Aveline hurried to her family's mansion and confronted her stepmother. Madeleine revealed to Aveline that she had secretly manipulated her life, preparing her for induction into the Templar Order, as she believed that they shared a common goal. Afterwards, Aveline traveled to the bayou and met with Agaté, informing him of Madeleine's identity as the Company Man. Agaté was unable to accept his failure and believing that Aveline had sided with the Templars, attacked her. Aveline overpowered him and attempted to convince him to leave Louisiana for his own safety, but Agaté could not live with the humiliation and instead chose to dive to his death. Aveline decided to infiltrate the Templars and eradicate it from within. Upon returning to New Orleans, she made her way to the Saint Louis Cathedral and gave Madeleine Agaté's necklace to show her allegiance. Following this, she was inducted into the Templar Order by her stepmother. Aveline then gave her the two halves of the Prophecy Disk, which Madeleine placed on an altar and added another piece to hold the two fragments together. However, she could not make sense of the scrambled messages within. Aveline saw this as her moment to strike and reclaim the Prophecy Disk. She eliminated all the Templars inside the cathedral and assassinated Madeleine. Now alone inside the cathedral, Aveline stepped up to the altar where the Prophecy Disk had been placed. She connected the locket she wore around her neck, which once belonged to her mother, to the artifact, causing it to display a holographic recording detailing a message from the time of the First Civilization. This message recounted the election of Eve as the leader of the rebellion during the Human-First Civilization War.

Assassin's Creed Origins

Assassin's Creed Origins

Sony Playstation 4 - Released - October 27, 2017

Assassin's Creed Origins is an action-adventure video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. It is the tenth major installment in the Assassin's Creed series and the successor to 2015's Assassin's Creed Syndicate. It was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on October 27, 2017. The game is set in Egypt during the near end of the Ptolemaic period (49-47 BC) and recounts the secret fictional history of real-world events. The story explores the origins of the centuries-long conflict between the Brotherhood of Assassins, who fight for peace by promoting liberty, and The Order of the Ancients—forerunners to the Templar Order—who desire peace through the forced imposition of order.

Assassin's Creed Rogue

Assassin's Creed Rogue

Sony Playstation 3 - Released - November 11, 2014

Assassin's Creed: Rogue is the eighth main game in the historical series. It is the sequel to Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag from the year before. It also acts as a prequel to Assassin's Creed III and the game's final mission is a prologue to Assassin's Creed: Unity, which was released simultaneously. Most of the gameplay and design is similar to the sandbox environment of Black Flag as the game combines exploration on land with ship-based naval exploration and battles. The protagonist is Shay Patrick Cormac, an Assassin recruit with a rebellious streak. He eventually becomes disgruntled with the order's tactics and becomes involved with the Templars as a feared Assassin Hunter, making it the first title in the series to control a Templar throughout the larger portion of the game. Many characters from the aforementioned games return, including Adéwalé from Freedom Cry. The familiar modern day sequences also return, this time playing as a new employee at Abstergo Entertainment who needs to explore Cormac's memories during a server crash. The game is set in the 18th century during the French and Indian War. The game's main locations are New York, the River Valley and the North Atlantic Ocean. The ice in the latter environment introduces new game mechanics, such as frozen cargo, icebergs used as cover and an ice-breaker ram to open up passages. Swimming in icy water damages Cormac's health and there are no underwater missions like in Black Flag. His ship Morrigan is smaller and can be used to travel through rivers. There are also new weapons such as oil barrels that can be ignited. Puckle guns are introduced, ships can be rammed, and the Morrigan can be boarded by enemies during ship-to-ship combat. Sea shanties return, with a mix of old and new ones. On land typical missions return. New weapons are air rifles and grenade launchers. The fighting mechanics have been altered to allow countering based on timing, rather than keeping a button pressed. As many opponents are Assassins, they use familiar techniques against Cormac such as air attacks, hiding in bushes and blending in with crowds. Gas is a new type of weapon and Cormac can avoid this by pulling a mask over his face. New animals to hunt include narwhals and polar bears. Passive income can be earned by restoring buildings in the main three locales. Certain regions need to be freed by taking on gangs that control them. As with previous games there are many collectibles and side quests. There is no multiplayer mode.

The touchscreen is utilized for mini-games, like interrogation and pickpocketing, as well as displaying a map during standard gameplay. The game's combat system consists primarily of weak attacks, strong attacks, blocks, and combos of the three with the sword, while bombs and projectiles are made available in later gameplay. Seven different weapons are available, including the hidden retractable blade, a sword, crossbow, explosive bombs, smoke bombs, and throwing knives. The game also features three different levels of difficulty, allowing for more experienced players to take on a bigger challenge. It features five cities, Tyre and Aleppo, Jerusalem, Acre and Damascus. Unlike the original Assassin's Creed, the game is not told through the perspective of Desmond Miles, but rather the perspective of Altaïr Ibn La-Ahad, although the menu screens do take place in the Animus.

Assassin's Creed: Altair's Chronicles HD

Assassin's Creed: Altair's Chronicles HD

Apple iOS - Released - April 23, 2009

Set in 1190, Altaïr's Chronicles is conceived as a prequel to the original console version of Assassin's Creed. This time, we learn how Altaïr becomes an assassin while looking for an artifact through different cities. It is said that this artifact, known as "the chalice", can give its owner the power to stop the Crusades. The game is presented as a side-scroller with guided 3D paths. That is, the player has freedom to move in 3 dimensions, as the use of rooftops will be very extensive, but limited to a given path. As in the previous game, Altaïr shows the usual abilities of combat, stealth and parkour-like displacement, that will help him to find alternative routes or fight the enemies if there is no other way. Other abilities such as interrogation and pickpocketing is performed this time through mini-games, that make use of the touch screen of the DS. In addition, Altaïr can gain new abilities through gathering of blue orbs scattered through the maps (short of gaining "experience").

Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines

Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines

Sony PSP - Released - November 17, 2009

Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines is a PSP-exclusive game that continues the story of the first Assassin's Creed game and also builds up to its sequel Assassin's Creed II. Unlike the Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles spin-off for mobile and portable devices, it offers the open world and nonlinear gameplay of the original game. The game is set one month after the events of the first game and takes place in the two cities Limassol and Kyrenia on the island of Cyprus. The Templars have moved there and Altaïr has followed them to find out what their plans are and to take all of them out if there is an opportunity. The main villain is Armand Bouchart, grand master of the Templars, who is hunting the apple of Eden, which will allow him to control the minds of anyone he chooses. Gameplay runs on similar vein to the original Assasin's Creed. Altaïr has the ability move freely through each of the cities in the familiar parkour style based on stealth and sneaking up on targets. Players can also opt to have Altaïr simply fight his way in at street level and go in through the front door. Altaïr's arsenal consists of his fists for melee (usually non-lethal) combat, his signature sleeve sword and a longsword. Bloodlines also features PS3 connectivity via USB, which allows you to unlock six new weapons in Assasin's Creed II when your PSP is hooked up to your PS3. These can also be used in the PSP version. In addition to this, any Templar coins you find in Bloodlines are carried over to Assassin's Creed II, and codex pages will give you a health boost.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

Windows - Released - November 16, 2010

The modern-day Assassins, including Desmond Miles, make their escape and go into hiding from the Templars. They take refuge into modern-day Monteriggioni, which has been preserved as an historical site. There, they setup the Animus for Desmond to explore deeper into Ezio's past and discover more about the missing Pieces of Eden. Ezio's story takes place immediately after the end of Assassin's Creed II, and has him leaving Rome to head back to Monteriggioni. There, he is ambushed and the Piece of Eden he has found is stolen. He must head back to Rome, which has since been seized by the Borgia, rescue its people, and recover what has been lost. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood continues the story from Assassin's Creed II. Players take on the role of Ezio as they use their assassin skills to liberate Rome and fight against the Templars. Players take on missions to progress the story, earn money and gradually free the city from the influence of the Borgia. Specifically, by burning down the thirteen Borgia towers that are being used to enforce their rule, Ezio can reclaim areas of Rome back for the people, and use his money to restore shops, shortcut tunnels, and even Roman landmarks. By doing this, players also earn a regular income from Rome, which they can claim from any of Rome's banks. New to the Assassin's Creed series is a multiplayer component. The backstory behind the multiplayer mode is that that Abstergo, the Templar organization, is using Animus devices to train their recruits to become Assassins. You take on the role of an Abstergo recruit, and must find and assassinate your target while being tracked for assassination yourself. You must make sure that you do not arouse suspicion, otherwise it will become obvious that you are an assassin rather than a citizen, making it easier for you to be spotted and taken down. As you play, you earn points which allow you to level up and upgrade your character's skills and abilities. The Windows version, both on Steam and the boxed retail package, includes two bonus maps: The Trajan Market and The Aquaduct.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

Apple Mac OS - March 22, 2011

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is a 2010 historical action-adventure open world stealth video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. It is the third major installment in the Assassin's Creed series, a direct sequel to 2009's Assassin's Creed II, and the second chapter in the 'Ezio trilogy'. The game was first released on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in November and December 2010, and was later made available on Microsoft Windows in March and June 2011. The story is set in a fictional history of real world events set in two time periods, the 16th and 21st centuries. The main portion of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood takes place immediately after the plot of Assassin's Creed II, featuring 16th-century Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze in Italy and his quest to restore the Assassin order, and destroy his enemies: the Borgia family. Intersecting with these historical events are the modern day activities of series protagonist Desmond Miles, who relives his ancestor Ezio's memories to find a way to fight against the Assassins' enemies, the Templars, and to prevent the 2012 apocalypse. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is set in an open world and presented from the third-person perspective with a primary focus on using Desmond and Ezio's combat and stealth abilities to eliminate targets and explore the environment. Ezio is able to freely explore 16th-century Rome to complete side missions away from the primary storyline. The game introduced a multiplayer component to the series, portrayed as a Templar training program. The game received critical acclaim along with multiple awards including a BAFTA award for Best Action Game. It was followed in November 2011 by Assassin's Creed: Revelations, a direct sequel that served as a conclusion to Ezio's story and continued the story of Desmond Miles.

Assassin's Creed: Odyssey

Assassin's Creed: Odyssey

Sony Playstation 4 - Released - October 5, 2018

Story: The battle of Thermopylai, 480 BC. King Leonidas I of Sparta and his army of 300 stop the advance of an invading Persian army that counts tens of thousands soldiers. In the end, he falls, but not before costing the Persians so dearly that their conquest for Greece fails on the very shore they landed. Two generations later, Alexios and Kassandra were born. Depending on player's selection, one of them plays the protagonist while the other becomes an antagonist. But before they were shaped into mighty warriors, they were children, they were Spartan, and one of them was to be sacrificed to the gods at the behest of the Cult of Kosmos who works in the shadows yet controls the world through chaos. Many years later, the remaining sibling lives on the island of Kephallonia, while the other is presumed dead by being thrown from the mountain in the sacrificial process. The protagonist living in Kephallonia was rescued and raised by Markos, a shady character with a knack of making drachmae and getting himself into trouble, but with a good heart. Being raised by such a person made the protagonist took a path of becoming a mercenary. Feeling ready, it was time to venture into the world and find the answer to many questions that troubled the protagonist from the childhood. Why did their father allow the sacrifice? Is the mother still alive? Who or what is the Cult of Kosmos and what are their plans? Thus, Alexios' or Kassandra's odyssey begins. Gameplay: This is the the first time in the series where the player gets to choose the protagonist. In Syndicate player could switch between sibling protagonists, but here the entire story is shaped around the single selectable protagonist, Alexios or Kassandra. The game also has two main gameplay modes... one which helps the player by showing where to go next for main quests, and the exploration mode which forces the players to explore Ancient Greece on their own and find out where the next goal is on their own. Similar to previous games in the series, the player can move on foot, ride a horse, or commandeer a ship (or a smaller fishing boats that will break on open sea on big waves). Many RPG elements were taken directly from Origins so the player has various weapons and armor which can be replaced or upgraded by the blacksmith. Weapons and armors can also be engraved with special abilities. As with other RPGs, there is a leveling up system in this game, but the enemy levels up together with the player so while the player's attack, defense and overall strength increases, the same happens to the enemies so player never becomes strong enough to more easily or more quickly take out some fortress or a pack of wolves head on. Weapons and armor too have a level number assigned, but each piece of equipment can be upgraded to player's current level with enough money and resources. Money is earned by doing mercenary jobs, weather story quests or various tasks which constantly appear on the bulletin boards in towns and ports. Experience points are earned by defeating enemies, solving quests and opening new regions and areas on the map. Experience points are used to level up which in turn lets the player exchange skill points to upgrade existing or unlock new skills. After a while, additional upgrade system opens which lets the player use skill points to upgrade warrior, ranger, or assassin type of attacks. Spent skill points can be reset at any time and re-used for entirely new selection. While the player is a mercenary and he gets paid for various jobs and bounties, doing bad things in the open may create a bounty on player's head which will make other mercenaries hunt the player. Bounty can be lifted by remaining out of sight for a while, by paying money for your crimes, or by killing those that put bounty on your head. The quests are split into odyssey quests which are quests tied to the main story, add-on quests which are related to DLCs, world & characters which are quests given by characters you met on your travel, and bounties & contracts which are acquired from various bulletin boards. By completing the main story quests, the game doesn't pause or asks the player if they wish to continue exploring, it simply continues as if they were regular quests. End credits roll doesn't kick in, though credits can be accessed via main menu. A photo mode is available and lets the player post a photo online which appears on the part of the map where it was taken. The same way, player can look at other cool photos taken and posted by other players. Entirely new in this game and further step toward role-playing game are selectable dialogues and topics to talk about. Even choices which can be used in dialogues without having to unlock such ability like in other RPGs, for example choosing the approach to get some answer... through intimidation or seduction. There are also many romances (although none really deeper than one-night stand) which can be followed through based on dialogue selection and actions done in a specific quest. But even though sex element is introduced, nothing more than flirting dialogues that lead to a kiss which then fades into black screen is shown. Land Combat & Controls: While Ancient Greece has many island and is surrounded by sea, most of exploration will still be done on land. While on foot, the player can walk, run or sneak while crouching. Sneaking reduces the chance to be spotted, and if the player is in the bushes then unless the enemy soldier bumps into you, the player is invisible which is indicated by slightly highlighting the player character. There are many different weapons the player can wield, from swords and hammers to spears and tridents, each weapon has its own pros and cons, power and speed. Only two weapon types can be selected at the same time for a quick switch during combat. Close combat weapons are warrior weapons. For long ranged attacks the player uses bow and arrow. There are different types of arrows and different skill moves and powers can be assigned for both warrior and ranger style attacks. Assassin skills and assassin attacks are used only when the enemy is unaware of the player, meaning when you sneak up to or run to the enemy looking in the opposite direction. There is literally no limit to where the player can climb and after reaching certain level, jumping from skies won't harm you either. World map is initially covered and it shows various locations, towns, fortresses, bandit camps, and other points of interest by entering new region. Synchronization points are still there and once reached they can be used for fast-travel, otherwise the horse really speeds up the travel as opposed to running, although in vicinity of towns even the horse won't be fully galloping. To upgrade equipment or craft arrows and other things, resources are needed. They vary from tree branches to metal ore and are scattered around the land, re-spawning upon entering the same area, and same happens to cleared forts and soldier camps. Sea Combat & Controls: There are small fishing boats which are fast and useful for reaching close islands or navigating across the shallow water with no big waves, and then there is the main ship, the Adrestia, that players can upgrade and uses to battle enemy ships and travel the open sea. The ship can be upgraded in appearance (both ship itself and the crew) as well as in strength. When fighting other vessels, archers fire at longer distance while javelins fire at closer. Additionally, ramming an enemy ship from the side causes massive damage and can sometime break the enemy ship in half. When damaged enough, the enemy ship can also be boarded and plundered. Most of weapons and armor can be sold and disassembled for parts, but epic equipment cannot. If it clutters the menu with many old epic pieces of armor or weapons, those can be stored in a chest on the player's ship. Bulletin board with contracts and bounties can also be accessed on the ship. But sea combat and exploration isn't limited to surface alone... the player can dive the entire sea and explore the underwater life just as well. While underwater, holding your breath leaves a short amount of time to dive leisurely, but there is a trident weapon which when equipped gives the player the ability to breathe underwater so exploring underwater ruins and fighting sharks can be done without having to worry about the remaining air in your lungs. Air Combat & Controls: There isn't really any type of combat that takes place in the air, but there is a controllable character that is non-stop in the air, namely Ikaros, the player's faithful eagle. While in the open, the player can switch to Ikaros at any time and check the surrounding from high up in the air. Ikaros can tag enemy for the player which is the main purpose of this bird, although it can soar on its own and explore more distant areas. Synchronizing map points also adds a brief cutscene showing Ikaros circling around the checkpoint and giving the open view of the area. By level up the player character, as well as synchronizing more checkpoints, Ikaros too gains new abilities such as being able to see and mark targets further, come down and swoop nearby animals or even be called on to distract enemies.
