Desert Commander

Desert Commander

Nintendo Entertainment System - Released - April 28, 1988

The player's force consists of nine different types of units and one headquarters unit (which is a unit by itself and also can be used to attack). Each scenario gives a different set number of units to use, which the player can mix and match between the different typese without going over that limit. When in a one-player game, the second controller can be used to modify the CPU forces. When playing against the CPU, the computer will be given a different ratio of units to command than the player. On the easiest scenario both the player and the CPU have the same amount of units, on all others the CPU will have more than the player. There is no variance in artificial intelligence, so the only thing that makes the later maps harder is the larger number of units the CPU has. The game is turn-based with no time limit. The object of the game is to destroy the enemy's headquarters unit. The player that does so first wins. Units have different mobility range, which varies according to the unit type and (except for aircraft) the terrain. They also have different shooting range, though this is fixed and not depends of the terrain. All unit types have limited ammunition and fuel. In order to replenish them the player must land them at the appropiate buildings; for example, all aircraft must stop at an airport in order to recharge their fuel and ammo supply. A certain unit is particularly strong or weak against a particular opponent, performing average against every other unit types.

Dough Boy

Dough Boy

Nintendo Entertainment System - Released - December 11, 1985

The general idea of the game is that the player must rescue a POW from a POW camp. Players can die by being shot, falling into water (by drowning), being blown up by a land mine, and being run over by a tank. Players are in possession of machine gun and can use dynamite as a way to attack the enemies. A strict time limit of 24 hours (five real-time minutes) is used in order to keep the pace of the game relatively brisk. After each round is completed, time is taken off the clock to make things more difficult. Land mines, trenches, and barbed wire similar to those used in the First World War can be seen throughout the levels. The enemy's naval forces are introduced in the game in the second stage along with bridges to go from island to island while tanks start to make their appearance in the third and fourth stages of the game. Watch towers and enemy barracks make their initial appearance in the fifth stage. Keys are required to complete a level and can be found anywhere in the game; from exploded canisters to enemy barracks.

Genocide 2

Genocide 2

Super Nintendo Entertainment System - Released - August 5, 1994

The world is still recovering from war. The mega-corporation CONEX has been spearheading the rebuilding process, but their true intentions are far from altruistic. By gobbling up their competition, and with the help of new weapons technology, CONEX is on the cusp of controlling the world. Only a hero from the last war can defy them and stop their plans of conquest. Genocide 2 is a modified version of the PC release. The player takes control of a ten meter tall robotic ninja: the Tracer. Its only form of attack is a sword, but it can hold several extra weapons, and always has access to the Betty. The Betty can be fired in eight directions, returns to the Tracer after being fired, and can block enemy bullets. The objective of each stage is to reach the end, and some stages require you to destroy targets along the way. Any items picked up by the player, or damage done to the Tracer, carries over between stages, and each stage records your fastest time for beating them. Aside from the visual downgrade, Genocide 2 also lost many minor enemy types and one mid-boss in the transition to the Super Famicom. The first stage was removed, and the first two levels of stage 2 were reversed. The Betty now can only be used for a limited time, and must recharge when its time has run out.

Nankoku Shirei!! Spy vs. Spy

Nankoku Shirei!! Spy vs. Spy

Nintendo Entertainment System - Released - March 27, 1987

Nangoku Shirei!!: Spy vs Spy plays almost identically to the original Spy vs Spy game, just with a graphically updated island theme. Instead of rooms full of fixtures that items might be hidden behind, the player must search beaches on islands for items buried in the sand. Specifically, they need to assemble a missile from its parts, presumably so it can be launched at the opponent spy's home country. Finding the missile will allow the victorious spy to escape the island via a submarine (which inexplicably also includes an attractive woman). There are also traps which, like in the original, can be placed in spots where missile parts might be to fool opponents into killing themselves.

Nekojara Monogatari

Nekojara Monogatari

Nintendo Game Boy - Released - December 14, 1990

Nekojara Monogatari -or Nekojara Story- is a 1990 JRPG released by Kemco on the original Game Boy utilising the same engine as used for Selection (The Sword of Hope) and astute role players will possibly recall Nekojara Island in The Sword of Hope II. Like The Sword of Hope games; Nekojara Monogatari is a first-person role playing game that actually plays more of an outdoors crawler than the usual indoors (dungeon) crawler but rather than humans and monsters involves cats and other less typical baddies You control a boy (well former boy) that upon winning the lottery is turned into a cat. The King of Catland offers to return you to human form but only after recovering the King’s Triangle which is surely a play on the Triforce. The developers Kemco also published the first-person RPG games Shadowgate (NES) and Drakkhen (SNES) as well as a million Bugs Bunny and Top Gear games and more recently many iOS/Android JRPG’s including a colour remake of this very game (which again sadly was never localised).
