Hanii in the Sky

Hanii in the Sky

NEC TurboGrafx-16 - Released - March 1, 1989

One day, Hani (sometimes known as Honey), who is a phallic objet d'art from stoneage Japan, is summoned by the god Izanaki. Izanaki is worried because his wife Izanami's heart has been invaded by a demon. His once peaceful wife now kills thousands of humans each day and threatens to destroy the world that she once created together with her husband. Hani must fly into Izanami's heart and destroy the demon. Once Hani has entered Izanami's heart, and you are put in control, it turns into a vertically-scrolling shoot'em up. One button fire the gun, but the other one rotates the gun clockwise, so that you may shoot at enemies coming from any direction. Hani is thus reminiscent of a flying tank. Hani starts out with only one life to spare and a weak weapon, usually giving few minutes of play before game over. However, each enemy shot gives spiritual power to Hani. Pressing the run button puts you in contact with Izanaki, who will let you trade in those power points in exchange for the usual assortment of power-ups, such as multiple shots. Izanaki will also grant you teleportation abilities, so that you may travel back and forth between levels.

Hanii on the Road

Hanii on the Road

NEC TurboGrafx-16 - Released - September 7, 1990

Hanii on the Road (aka Hany on the Road or Honey on the Road) is a side scrolling action game by Face. After Hanii's exploits in Hanii in the Sky, the little Haniwa clay doll is back on a new mission. This time around, our cute friend must free the world from all the demons and other evil creatures that escaped from the Gods' realm. But this time around he's not flying or shooting balls of energy - instead, he must run along a roadway divided into four lanes, each moving at different speeds. And things are just not as easy as it may sound - Hanii has to jump over various enemies and try not to fall into deep holes dug into the ground, without forgetting the occasional change in scrolling direction and the myriad of other exciting, and often lethal, effects. A time limit also urges him to hurry and to quickly reach the end of each stage. Every little helps, and tiny wood signs scattered around every road tell Hany how far the next exit is. Additionally, special items can be collected along the way, such as Blue jars giving Hanii extra lives (twenty five of them need to be collected though), Mystery Jars giving from 100 to 1000 points, Extra Lives, Time Clocks, Rockets, Trampolines and other unique and often bizarre super powers (he can turn into a race-car or an almighty warrior in some stages!). Hanii on the Road consists of many levels and features a non-linear structure with interconnected paths to follow, as well as bosses. The game also offers a two simultaneous player mode where Lemon, a yellow version of Hanii, comes to the rescue.

Nostradamus

Nostradamus

Arcade - Released - 1993

Nostradamus is a vertically scrolling shoot' em up. Players control either a male pilot named Dalas (player one) or a female pilot named Joanna (player two). Dalas' ship is faster and has a weaker, but wider-coverage shot that loops behind the ship, whereas Joanna's ship is a bit slower but provides more powerful forward-firing shots. You can power up your shot up to seven times by collecting purple crystals. There's also an option weapon called the E.B.A. (Energy Boost Acceleration) which attaches to the sides of your ship and adds additional weaponry. It comes in two colors: blue one gives you homing plasma shots while the red one provides fireball shots. Collecting another E.B.A. item of the same color powers up the extra shots while grabbing the opposite color switches over. By holding down the fire button the player can charge up the system thus forming an energy barrier behind the ship which serves as a shield that protects the ship from rear attacks. Once the player releases the button, the E.B.A. will discharge a wave weapon: the blue E.B.A. unleashes the Plasmic Wave - a large blue laser beam that reaches the full vertical length of the screen, while the red E.B.A. grants you the Phoenix Wave, which creates a fiery pair of wings that cover and roast a wide horizontal area. The game consists of nine stages.

Ryukyu

Ryukyu

NEC TurboGrafx-16 - Released - October 26, 1990

Ryukyu is an unusual puzzle game produced by Ascii Corporation and published by Face. Decorated in a Hawaiian theme (actually, the game is probably based on the Japanese Ryukyu Islands), the game mixes together elements from various classic features with new ones - the most obvious being traditionnal Poker and Tetris. The game field is made of a uniform "five by five" grid. Playing cards are dropped from the top of the field and fill up these empty spaces. When a row, a column or a diagonal of five cards is filled, the game awards the player points for creating poker hands (card combinations) such as pairs, straights or flushes. The goal of the game is to gain the maximum amount of points and maybe achieve a perfect Clear. Ryukyu offers different play modes - solo modes often give the player an opportunity to reveal a picture with a cute girl in bikini made of mosaic tiles (if only they can manage to cleanup the field and unlock them all).
