20000 Leagues Under the Sea

MS-DOS - Released - 1988

The game is based on an 1870 novel by Jules Verne. On July 5th, 1867 the government decided to launch the famous ship the "Abraham Lincoln", which will leave on the trail of a sea monster. The great French professor Mr. Arronax will also take part in the expedition. The weeks passed without any sign of the monster's presence in the area, when, one day, 300 miles from the shores of Queen Charlotte's Island... three members of the expedition set out on board the Nautilus, a submarine navigated by Captain Nemo. The player takes Anorax's role to find out more. Most of the game is spent on the Nautilus, which consists of three rooms: the living room, the control room and the library. There the player can manipulate objects and talk to people to receive hints what to do next and the state of the Nautilus. With the map, he influences the route. Sometimes the player leaves the submarine to explore other locations, and respectively solves puzzles to receive more hints or to solve action sequences, e.g., fighting against a shark. The game is played in real-time, which means the key to success is being in the right location at the right time. This also results in various possibilities to render the game unwinnable, and causes waiting times. For the same reason, the player also needs to watch Nemo's mood. If he angers Nemo, e.g., by manipulating the ship instruments, he locks the player into his room and valuable time passes. The game is played completely in point & click and has no function to save progress.

African Raiders-01

African Raiders-01

Atari ST - Released - 1989

The game tries to represent the African part of 11th Paris-Dakar rally route, which in the game takes place in Tunisia, Algeria, Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Senegal in 1988-1989. Controlling his(her) car in third-person 'behind the car' view, player should drive through the marked path in Sahara. When player loses his(her) way, he(she) may be in the sands alone and start to skid. In this situation he(she) may switch between 4x4 and 4x2 modes of the car. These modes have own opportunities and misses. The speed is limited to 87 in 4x4 mode and limited by car's parameters in 4x2 mode. But in 4x4 mode path marks may stop the car, while in 4x2 mode the car may knock the path parks off. Switching the gear, player may drive back and forth to avoid blocking of car either by path mark or by debris in the sand. Direction of the way is shown by compass as well as length of traversed path and volume of residuary fuel are displayed by indicators. Other drivers are present on the way during day and night, therefore they should be left behind to win in the rally. There are five stages with different visible horizons: 1) Tunis - In Salah (5726 Km); 2) Ouallene - Achegour (4353 Km); 3) Achegour - Niamey (4587 Km); 4) Ouagadougou - Bamako (4438 Km); 5) Bamako - Dakar (3622 Km). So, you have to conquer the sands of Sahara, show good time on each stage, and to be the first at the finish.

Astérix and the Magic Carpet

Astérix and the Magic Carpet

Atari ST - Released - 1987

Asterix and the Magic Carpet is the twenty-eighth volume of the Asterix comic book series, by René Goscinny (stories) and Albert Uderzo (illustrations). It was first published in 1987. It is the fourth book to be published after the death of René Goscinny and is thus both written and drawn by Albert Uderzo alone. The full original French title was Astérix chez Rahàzade ou Le compte des mille et une heures (Asterix meets Orinjade or the 1001 Hours Countdown), a reference to Queen Scheherazade who tells the famous 1001 Arabian Nights collection of stories. Following the successful rebuilding of the village after Brutus' attack in the previous story, Chief Vitalstatistix is trying to give a speech, when he is interrupted by the bard Cacofonix, whose song causes rain. This introduces Watziznehm the fakir, by dropping him from his flying carpet; whereupon Watziznehm explains that he is searching for a way to make it rain in his country, a kingdom in the Ganges Valley, in fear that if no rain falls in the following 1001 hours, Princess Orinjade, daughter of Rajah Wotzit, will be executed as a sacrifice to the gods. This prophecy is part of an evil scheme by Grand Vizier Hoodunnit, to seize the throne. Vitalstatistix agrees to send the rain-making Cacofonix to India, accompanied by Asterix, Obelix, and Dogmatix. All five mount the flying carpet; but their journey is often interrupted either by Obelix's insistence on obtaining food, by Cacofonix's attempts to sing, and once by a lightning strike which forces them to replace the carpet. The Gauls eventually arrive in India with exactly 30 hours, 30 minutes, and 30 seconds to save Orinjade; but Cacofonix has lost his voice during the journey, and Rajah Wotzit's doctors proclaim that to regain his voice, Cacofonix must take an overnight bath in a combination of elephant milk, dung and hair. Accordingly, the Gauls and Watziznehm take Cacofonix to elephant-trainer 'Howdoo' and set up the bath; but Hoodunnit sends his henchmen to kidnap the bard, and take him to an elephants' graveyard to be trampled by the wild elephant herd. When Watziznehm, Asterix, and Obelix set out to recover the bard, they are stopped by Owzat, Hoodunnit's fakir sidekick. While Watziznehm and Owzat curse each other, Asterix and Obelix escape to Howdoo, with whom they embark to the elephants' graveyard. After delays by tigers, monkeys, a rhinoceros, and Hoodunnit's henchmen, they find Cacofonix alive and well, his smell having placated the elephants. Meanwhile Watziznehm defeats Owzat and recovers the Gauls on his flying carpet. At the execution grounds, Asterix defeats Orinjade's executioner and saves her, while Watziznehm intercepts Hoodunnit. Cacofonix recovers his voice by the dose of magic potion he has taken, and sings, causing rain. At the victory feast in the palace, Obelix surmises that his fellow villagers might be having their customary banquet, this time without him. This is proven true; and at the banquet, some of the Gauls begin to express desire to retrieve the bard, in fear of a drought, and Fulliautomatix the blacksmith, Cacofonix's habitual menace, appears to be missing him.

Astérix and the Magic Potion

Astérix and the Magic Potion

Amstrad CPC - Released - 1988

Based on the comic book Asterix the Gaul, the game's plot involves Getafix being captured by the Romans. They want a potion to make themselves invincible but instead the Gauls must trick them by collecting the ingredients to make hair grow faster. The player controls three of the Gauls. Asterix is the smartest, so he must collect the ingredients for the hair potion. If the player grabs the dog Idéfix then he can call Obelix, who is the strongest, so that he can help with punching down walls. But if he doesn't eat enough wild boar, he'll fall asleep. If a harp is acquired, Cacofonix can be summoned, who is the only one who can defeat the music-loving Druid. As Asterix can only carry one item at a time, the player must plan the path and have the correct one to bypass certain areas like having a shield to avoid arrows. There are meters on screen for amount of magic potions, wild boar and time limit left. Included in the game box is also an Asterix mini-puzzle and a short black-and-white comic story called "In 50 BC."

Astérix: Operation Getafix

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1989

There must have been many fans of the Asterix comics who waited with baited breath for the arrival of Asterix: Operation Getafix. And devoted admirers they have to be, for this game doesn’t offer the most sophisticated gameplay in the world. Asterix is best played in the spirit of remembering the rosy times of childhood, when Asterix was the greatest resistance hero since Rin-Tin-Tin. All the wonderfully named characters, such as Vital Statistix and Cacofonix the musician are present and correct. The druid Getafix has been well and truly stoned (by a passing missile, of course). He needs a beverage to bring him down to earth, and as Asterix, that level headed Gaul, your job is to find the ingredients that make up this hair of the dog. Troll your way merrily through ye olde Gallic village, through the forest and even the Roman fort to find the elusive elixir. Not an easy trek through the ancient world, as perils dog every move. Wild boars and flying fish may knock you down, and the worst ancient hazard of all - Romans! Fisticuffs with the crusaders takes courage and daring. Biff them hard enough and they will fly skyward. Asterix is a fun game with cheerful colours and graphics. Unfortunately, the sounds are limited, the best part being the quirky intro music - is it supposed to be Gallic? To be played with a cheeky grin and school uniform.

You'll travel through 20 or so locations. Each one consists of 1 to 3 screens, similar to other Coktel games. Along your travels, you'll face dangerous creatures and some strange alien technology. There are some occasions when you can die (though the option to replay the level is always available), plus the game also features several arcade sequences.

Freedom

Freedom

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1988

Freedom: Rebels In The Darkness is a game that combines elements of strategy, stealth and fighting games. The main character is a rebellious black slave working on a sugar plantation that tries to incite a revolt among the slave population to gain freedom and to give comeuppance to each of their old masters. At the start of the game there is four characters to choose, each with different statistics and abilities like "constitution" and "lock-picking". The main game screen is a map of the plantation, where you guide a small icon of the character while trying to avoid the guard dogs. If the dogs find you, they either bark and alert the owners or attack you. When they do, the screen switches to a first-person screen where you have to avoid being bitten and killed by the animal. On the top of the screen there are four buttons, each with a unique function: Path-finding lets you click on the map with a cursor and see a description of each hut and house. Movement allows you to move your character. Left-clicking shows a first-person view of your surroundings. This screen can vary depending of the place where you are in the map. Most of the time is the recruitment screen, where you click on your brother slaves to amass a army. Their response is a random "yes" or "no". If you click while on a sugar field, you get the option of climbing the huts, picking the storage hut lock, or setting fire to the premises. If you click while on the housings of the owner or one of his henchmen, you get the option of either confronting the person, or running away. If you decide to confront him, the screen switches to a side-view similar to fighting games like Street Fighter, with two energy bars at the bottom, where you have to fight one of the owner's men. If you win, you have the choice of killing the person or holding him captive. Review is the game statistics screen, where you can see your progress in the game. Advice only starts working once you get the support of either the shaman or the medicine man. They can heal any wound sustained by dog attacks and fights. The game accepts mouse, keyboard and joystick controls, and plays drum music and other sounds.

Once you’re off, you drive across the desert, steering your vehicle left and right to dodge the obstacles and stopping every so often to rest. During the journey, random events can occur which will delay you or cost you money – and be careful not to wander too far off course!

Robinson Crusoe

Robinson Crusoe

Amstrad CPC - Released - 1987

Based on the famous book, this graphical adventure plays much like a multiple-choice story book. You start out as Robinson, waking up on a deserted beach. Your main objective now is to survive in your new and unfamiliar environment. The vividly illustrated screens present you with multiple choices concerning your next action, interspersed with small flashes of animation. Your first objective is to rescue supplies from your sinking ship and to build a shelter, then to adapt to day-to-day life on the island, which might not be entirely uninhabited... Getting around the game is dependent on carrying out the correct actions in the correct order, or Mother Nature and other forces will meddle, eventually leading to Robinson's unceremonious death. Since the game is close to the original story, a copy of Daniel Defoe's book will serve as a useful cheating guide.

The Jungle Book

The Jungle Book

Amstrad CPC - Released - 1989

I had quite wonderful childhood memories of this film, until they got bulldozed by this turgid piece of software. Let’s be fair though - I guess it’s not a complete disaster. It’s presented as if it were a film, the audience lined up along the bottom of the screen. Lose a life, and one of them visibly falls asleep. A cute idea (sadly one of the few). Ah, yes, the game itself. This is a poor flick-screen, arcade-adventure thing, with jungle animals making life that that bit harder. So where have they gone wrong? Well, everywhere. I don’t think I saw a single exciting thing happen the whole time I was playing it - to be honest, it stinks. Just say no. You know it makes sense. Awful in almost every way, it really is quite sad. A contender for worst film tie-in ever, no problem. Disney must be kicking themselves over this one.
