Cal

Cal

Sharp X68000 - Released - January 12, 1991

The hero of this game is an ordinary high school student (the player has to name him by himself). He is mostly interested in pretty girls, in particular the lovely Mika, with whom he is even ready to discuss books just to get her attention. One day, a beautiful woman appears in front of him out of nowhere. She says that she is Venus, the goddess of love. She comes from a world called Cal, the eternal world populated by lovely girls. She tells the hero that soon he will be needed in that world... and disappears. Was that a dream? Or will our hero really travel to the magical world of Cal and encounter dangers he hasn't even imagined before? Cal is a visual novel, with the sole interaction consisting of choosing sentences to say and sometimes actions to do from a context-specific menu at the bottom of the screen. Usually only one such selection triggers the next event; some choices lead to Game Over. The game contains erotic pictures with nudity and sexual situations.

CAL Gaiden: Tiny Step: Tiny Steps Behind the CAL

CAL Gaiden: Tiny Step: Tiny Steps Behind the CAL

Fujitsu FM Towns Marty - Released - 1993

Cal Gaiden is not directly connected to other Cal games story-wise, completely abandoning the protagonist Wataru Ishibashi, the storyline concerning ancient Greek gods, and the multi-cultural fantasy setting. Instead, it follows the exploits of Satoru, a young man who its trying to find the love of his life. There are four possible candidates: the initial romantic interest Mari Inoue, the elusive Manako Sakamoto, and two co-workers - Ami and Yōko. The player can choose to start a specific chapter dedicated to each of these young women (the last two are grouped together). The gameplay largely follows the visual novel format, albeit generally with more options to choose from than it is usually the case with games of that genre. Much of the story is linear, but some decisions may influence the subsequent development of the plot.

NEC PC-9801 - Released - July 10, 1993

Two years have passed since Wataru Ishibashi, an ordinary high-school student in modern-day Japan, visited the magic world of beautiful goddesses and rescued his girlfriend Mika. It seems he can now finally enjoy a peaceful time with his beloved girl. But one day, his old friend Ches, a cute cat-like fairy girl, appears in his room and summons him to the world of gods. It appears that Venus, the goddess of love, is in trouble due to the unforeseen events that have led to the outbreak of the Trojan war. Wataru is about to begin another adventure in the world of gods and ancient cultures. Cal III is a Japanese-style adventure with visual novel characteristics. The player interacts with characters and is given several dialogue options or actions to choose from. There is no other interaction with the environment, and the progress is strictly linear. Most choices are optional, and only a few lead to Game Over. The computer versions of the game contain a few scenes with nudity, but overall the sexual content is by far milder than in the predecessors.

Hole Chaser

Hole Chaser

NEC PC-8801 - Released - April 24, 1990

Daisuke's girlfriend Kasumi has asked him to write music for lyrics she's written, and being the upstanding young man he is, he accepts. Toiling for three days on the song, he finally finishes and can't wait to play it for Kasumi! He heads off to Kasumi's house and rings the bell, but her father answers and tells Daisuke that she hasn't returned from school yet. Moments later again, the phone rings. Kasumi has been kidnapped! Her father gives Daisuke a small UFO for some reason, and he rushes off to save her! Hole Chaser is a simple action game where the player must guide a rather unruly-to-operate UFO to the end of a maze. It will bounce off any hazards in the stage, and can't be crushed, but there is a strict time limit for each stage. Fail to complete the stage in time, and it's game over. Reach the goal, and the player is shown a short scene of Kasumi being sexually assaulted by her captor. The scenes get continually more explicit as the game progresses. There are six stages total, as well as a music mode for listening to the BGM.

Joker II

Joker II

Sharp X68000 - Released - March 20, 1992

Joker II continues the story that started in Joker. In the end of the first game, the young hero Wild had to confront the sorceress Claudia, who intended to resurrect the evil Joker, which caused what the Native Americans of the region called "The Great Disaster". Six months have passed since the tragic outcome of those events. Wild is taken care by his friends and companions. The same nightmare pursues him: he sees his sweetheart Laura calling for him, begging him to save her... Wild has to rebuild his life from scratch, but this nightmare ties him to his past... so he ventures out to look for answers once again. Gameplay-wise, Joker II is pretty much identical to its predecessor. It is a Japanese-style adventure without puzzles, but with more interaction and exploration possibilities than it is usually the case with games of its genre. Graphically the game also looks very similarly; since most of it takes place in the same locations, many images were simply transferred from the first game. Like its predecessor, Joker II has several scenes with nudity and mild sexual situations.

Maten Gakuen: Jigoku no Love Love Daisakusen

NEC PC-9801 - Released - December 13, 1993

The tribe of demons dwells above the Himalaya mountains. The demon king Zenon is harboring a plan to occupy the Earth and subdue the humans under his yoke. But first, following a demonic ritual, he sends his son to a Japanese private high school. With his side-kick Zabo, who can miraculously change forms and genders, the young demon offspring is incarnated in a human form and has to deal with the hormonal problems most human teenagers suffer from. Maten Gakuen is a Japanese-style adventure. The player interacts with the environment by choosing commands corresponding to looking, listening, and moving (though in the game they are called "Devil Eye", "Devil Ear", and "Devil Move", respectively). Most of the time selecting these commands prompts the player to choose objects to interacts with from a menu list.

My Eyes!

My Eyes!

NEC PC-9801 - Released - September 10, 1992

A young woman named Ryouko is working in a research laboratory specializing in communication with aquatic animals. Recently she has made groundbreaking discoveries with one of the test subjects, a whale named Gigi. Ryouko managed to establish full communication with the animal and teach him information. However, other people involved in the project have their own ideas concerning the practical usage of the whale's intelligence, and are ready to use it to further their own shady agendas. My Eyes! plays similarly to visual novels, albeit with many more choices and interaction than it is usually the case with games of its type. There are no permanent menus and only a few instances where navigation is possible; however, the player is often presented with several context-specific commands and choices in each situation. Often it is necessary to go through commands multiple times to trigger the next events; sometimes wrong choices lead to Game Over.

Pias

NEC PC-8801 - Released - August 10, 1990

Hiroshi and Mayumi grew up together. They went to the same kindergarten, the same school, always spent time together, and naturally thought that they will never separate. Then the time has come when they both had to go to different colleges. They promised each other than they will still be together. But they both broke the promise... If jealousy and the knowledge of one's own betrayal were not enough to endanger their relationship, something far worse happened... the man with whom Mayumi spent the night was found murdered, and Hiroshi must forget his personal pain in order to solve the mystery... Pias is a traditional Japanese-style adventure. The gameplay consists of choosing verb commands ("Look", "Talk", "Ask", "Think", "Move") from a menu. Typically, events are triggered by depleting all the commands at every screen. The game has scenes with explicit sexual content.

NEC PC-8801 - Released - June 13, 1990

The protagonist's father dies and leaves the will for his son to take care of his secret daughter Eriko in Yokohama or get stripped from inheritance. The hero sets off to Yokohama while having only the picture of the girl. This is one of the most beautiful games of Bridy Soft - and heroines here are very lovely. The bigger part of the game we just search for Eriko while getting information from neighbors and friends. And here comes a big "but" - but the hero actually lays down with each such friend or neighbor to know a piece of information. Add to that a very tragic story of Eriko revealed later and we get a really dark-themed game - which is not necessarily bad, but in my case spoilt the impression from the beginning of the work.

Four girls pass the casting to work in a Western mansion. You choose one of the girls and watch the forecoming events from her point of view. We know it well that even at the time of Cal 3 the staff of Birdy Soft left the company and the director had to hastily finish it himself. And Snow Memory comes years after that as an attempt to play on the brand name. Game's more than average with lots of fanservice and unnatural looking art.

The Joker

The Joker

NEC PC-9801 - Released - September 5, 1991

Joker is set in the time period commonly known as the "Old West" or "Wild West" in the United States of America. The protagonist of the game is a young man nicknamed Wild, who lives in a quiet Native American village. Years ago, the village was hit by something its inhabitants have since called "The Great Disaster". In order to seal the forces that caused the catastrophe, Wild's father sacrificed his own life. Now, the ceremonial day of the White Magic approaches. The youngest in the line of witches, a girl named Laura, must predict the future for the village and the world. For an unknown reason, Laura is unable to see into the future. Concerned, the village elder sends Wild on a mission to the nearby town, to find out what could cause this and if there is a way to prevent the Great Disaster from returning... Joker is essentially a Japanese-style adventure, with strictly menu-based interface, still screens viewed from first-person perspective, and no real puzzles. However, the game offers more interaction possibilities and less linear progression than it is usually the case in comparable games. The player must explore the town and talk to its inhabitants in order to advance the story and get to the bottom of the mystery. The game has scenes with nudity and rather mild depictions of sexual situations.

However, the game offers more interaction possibilities and less linear progression than it is usually the case in comparable games. The player must explore the town and talk to its inhabitants in order to advance the story and get to the bottom of the mystery. The game has scenes with nudity and rather mild depictions of sexual situations.
