Blitz: The League

Blitz: The League

Microsoft Xbox - Released - March 12, 2003

Blitz: The League is an American football game by Midway as an unlicensed extension of their NFL Blitz series. Released after the NFL signed an exclusive licensing deal with Electronic Arts, it was released in October 2005 for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. This game is the first in the Blitz series to receive an "M" rating by the ESRB due to the graphic violence, explicit language, and drug use depicted. Lawrence Taylor, who provides voice acting for the game, serves as its official spokesman. In 2006, a second version of the game was released on the Xbox 360 in October. In December 2006, a portable version was released on the PlayStation Portable (under the title Blitz: Overtime). These versions included the voicework and likeness of former pro linebacker Bill Romanowski. The game was originally intended to be a Wii launch title, but the Wii-version was delayed[1] and eventually canceled.[2] On January 22, 2007, the game was refused classification[3] by the Office of Film and Literature Classification in Australia, effectively banning the game there. The game was banned as the use of drugs was related to incentives and rewards.

Blitz: The League

Blitz: The League

Microsoft Xbox 360 - October 17, 2005

Blitz: The League brings you more Blitz-style play, but with more content and harder hits. The League includes on-field injuries, ranging from snapping bones to bloody, career-ending hits. Now you can control the entire franchise, dealing with personnel decisions and front-office politics. New visual game modes let you view crucial game moments and moves in slow motion. In addition to traditional multiplayer, you can also play the no-holds-barred style of Blitz football online.

Blitz: The League

Blitz: The League

Sony Playstation 2 - Released - October 17, 2005

Blitz: The League is the first football game with no NFL license in many years - because EA signed an exclusive deal with the NFL, Midway developed one without the license. The game has 17 fantasy teams all with their own look and feel - from personalities to logos. The game differentiates itself further from official games by giving the players an off-field presence, often involving sex, performance-enhancing drugs and violence. The game has input from the writer for Playmakers, the football-based soap opera the NFL forced ESPN to cancel. Blitz: The League has 8-man teams, and makes spectacular action-packed moves easier than in real life. Impressive moves boost your Clash meter, which allows you to pull off unrealistic moves, such as easier running due to Bullet Time, and some brutally tough defences tackles. If these tackles happen frequently enough the players will fight hockey-style, lunging into wild tackles. The team with the most tackles from this gains the Unleashed mode, which has even more gruesome moves, of a style the NFL would not allow to be associated with their product. Additional features include multiplayer action with head-to-head online play and complete customization options of players, teams, stadiums and more. Lawrence Taylor appears as the poster boy.

Blitz: The League II

Blitz: The League II

Sony Playstation 3 - Released - October 13, 2008

Blitz: The League II is the sequel to Blitz: The League where once again the player steps into a fantasy football league where sex, violence and drugs are standard. This version still has the same features as it's predecessor such as Exhibition where players can go one-on-one against the CPU or against a friend if they choose and Campaign where the player takes control of a coach assigned to a down and out team and bring them up to prominence and become League champions by training players through either legal or illegal means and view a constantly changing storyline of their star athletes lives. The Clash Mode is once again present which is built up by hitting opponents with dirty and late hits to unleash a powerful tackle that can turn the tide of a game at any moment. Injuries are still present with enhanced and realistic graphics showing broken bones and tearing tissue through x-rays of the players bodies at the moment of impact. One new feature is the ability to pin point the location of an opposing players body they wish to hit, the larger the area the greater the chances they will hit, but the smaller will have the player use precision timing but will have greater results in creating a devastating injury. There is also online capabilities where players can connect through their respective service in quick versus matches against friends or engage in an online campaign-mode as well as downloadable content. NFL Legend Lawrence Taylor once again makes an appearance as Quentin Sands, the New York Nightmares devastating linebacker, along with many other retired NFL stars who provide their voice talents to the experience. Also lending their voices are comedians Jay Mohr and Frank Caliendo (who is most notable for his impressions including John Madden).

Blitz: The League II

Blitz: The League II

Microsoft Xbox 360 - October 13, 2008

Blitz: The League II continues the franchise legacy as the ultimate alternative to the watered-down, licensed competition. In addition to an all-new story mode penned by Peter Egan (ESPN's Playmakers), Blitz: The League II features include: Precision-Aim Tackles, player-controlled touchdown celebrations, an enhanced on-the-field Clash Mode, online multiplayer capabilities, expanded rosters with all-new personalities, and the return of a cornerstone of the Blitz franchise...Late Hits! Football legend Lawrence Taylor returns as the game's cover-athlete and star linebacker for the New York Nightmare, Quentin Sands, along with a star-studded supporting cast.

Brutal Doom 64

Brutal Doom 64

Windows - October 30, 2016

Doom 64 is a not so well known port of Doom for the Nintendo 64. Unlike the ports for other consoles, it's not exactly a port, but a completely new game, featuring completely new levels, textures, sprites, enemies, and a new plot that takes place right after the events of Doom 2, and it's plot strongly suggests to be the prequel to "Doom 2016" as it be considered a reasonable explanation of how the Doom Marine stayed in Hell and became known as the "Doom Slayer" (thus being considered canonical to the series by many fan theories, and being the TRUE Doom 3). In 2003, Samuel "Kaiser" Villarreal was able to extract all textures, sprites and sounds from the N64 ROM and faithfully recreate the levels in the Doomsday engine, thus creating the Doom 64 Absolution TC, and later making Doom 64 EX (an emulator for the ROM for PC). The Doomsday engine is today considered obsolete, and a Doomworld user called Nightside successfully ported all maps to work on GZDoom, but has given up the project. Brutal Doom 64 aims to continue this project of "porting" (actually recreating from scratch) Doom 64 to GZDoom and Zandronum engines. Unlike Doom 64 EX or Doom 64 Absolution the goal of this project is not to make a 1:1 port of Doom 64 for PC, but to enhance it in every possible way, bringing the satisfying gore and gunplay of Brutal Doom, new sounds and special effects that greatly enhances the oppressive atmosphere of D64, and attempting to include all the content cut from the original game due the cartridge space of the N64. What it includes: - All weapons revamped to feature new sounds, animations, and have greater feedback. - Several stuff that were removed from the final game, such as Revenants, Masterminds, a weapon that was shown in an old magazine featuring an interview with the D64 devs that never got added into the final game, and an enemy called Hellhound which was also cut due the N64's cartridge space. - New gore featuring dismemberments, gibs, new blood splashes, blood decals on the walls, floor, and ceiling. - Brightmaps (such as monsters eyes glowing in the dark). - Multiplayer support through the Zandronum sourceport ( up to 64 players, either Co-Op, Survival Co-Op, and Deathmatch). - Revamped levels featuring new decorations, lightning system, fog, light shafts, etc. Techbase levels were optimised to have better navigation, new ambient sounds, more security cameras to remove the need of "switch hunting", and having some parts of the levels remade to look like a more plausible place. The Hell levels were also upgraded with new ambient sounds, and more disturbing imagery. - Option to play with the Brutal Doom 64 weapons and enemies on regular Doom 2 levels, or with custom maps. Or play the Brutal Dooom 64 levels with other gameplay mods. Frequently Asked Questions Q: Is this a modification of a Rom? Can I play it on the Nintendo 64? Is this Doom 64 Ex? A: Neither of above. This is a total conversion made for GZDoom/Zandronum for PC. No, you can't play it on the N64 (its hardware couldn't even render the effects being used here to start with). You require GZDoom or Zandronum installed, and you need to own Doom 2 to play it. Q: Does this support multiplayer? A: Yes. Up to 64 players on Zandronum 3.0. Co-Op, survival co-op, and deathmatch. Zandronum 2.1 will not be suported. Q: Can I run with on software mode? A: This mod is made for OpenGL and makes heavy use of additive translucency and dynamic lights. It is playable on software mode, but it will honestly look terrible. Q: But I have a potato computer and cant run these new effects because my fps drops too much. A: I will add a CVAR that allows you to disable the fog and reflection effects. Q: Will the Revenant, Mastermind, Chaingunguy, and Archvile return? A: You can already see the Revenant and the Chaingunguy (now Zombie Marine) on this video. The Mastermind still uses a placeholder sprite (just a pallete swap of the Arachnotron) but it will soon get its own sprites. I am not sure about adding the Archvile, since its a very complex enemy (he forces the player to run away and take cover or would cause extreme damage with its unavoidable attack) and there would be no places designed for an Archvile fight in this game, and it would end up being just a very annoying enemy that adds nothing to the game's experience. Q: Will there be fatalities and executions? A: No, unlike the original Brutal Doom, this version is focused on making it as much as disturbing, horror and survival-oriented possible and a much more serious tone, So there won't be such over-the-top stuff. Q: Will there be weapon reloads, assault rifle, etc? A: I will make two player classes that can be choosen at the New Game menu. The player will be able to choose the "Classic" class for oldschool gameplay, or the "Tactical" class, that has an assault rifle, and weapons that deals more damage, but needs to be reloaded, and probably sprinting. I am still not sure if I will include this on the initial release.

CarnEvil

CarnEvil

Arcade - Released - 1998

CarnEvil is set in the fictional town of Greely Valley, Iowa, wherein the protagonist (called "Jacob" in the manual) takes a tour through the town cemetery. According to the story's premise, if a golden token is inserted into the mouth of the jester's head on top of the tombstone of "Professor Ludwig von Tökkentäkker", a haunted amusement park will appear after long absence. Jacob and his friend Lisa investigate this legend, and fulfill the conditions of the premise; whereupon the jester's head comes to life and raises the undead carnival from the ground, all trying to take their brains. During this process, Jacob obtains a shotgun from the shooting gallery at the entrance to fight through hordes of monsters, zombies, and insects. Jacob faces enemies in the three attractions - the Haunted House, Rickety Town, and Freak Show - and must defeat a strong 'boss character' at the end of each, as well as periodic sub-bosses. After escaping all three areas, he enters the Big Top, and fights clowns and circus animals to reach the center ring, whence he is taken to Tökkentäkker's zeppelin to face Tökkentäkker and his jester Umlaut. Tökkentäkker is defeated when the player strikes him into the zeppelin's propellers, causing both to collapse. Thereafter Jacob wakes in the cemetery, which has returned to normal. Seeing the token emerge from Tökkentäkker's tombstone, he re-inserts it while Lisa orders him not to do so.

Chaos à la Maison

Chaos à la Maison

Nintendo Wii - Released - March 9, 2009

Chaos at Home has given us a rather good surprise: offering a rather successful cartoon atmosphere, the game could very well have pulled out of the game through the mass of party-games that come out on Wii. Unfortunately, it does not offer enough content to win against the competition: it will take you less than two hours to go around the 17 mini-games offered which however remain quite nice for two players.

DOOM 64

DOOM 64

Nintendo 64 - Released - March 31, 1997

DOOM 64 picks up where all the other DOOM games left off. After tearing through space, hell, and wherever else in the previous games, the Space Marine thought that the threat of the demons was finally past. Of course, one survived, and it is currently reanimating all of the fallen monsters in a last-ditch attempt to revitalize their evil mission. The player's task is to finally rid the universe of all the crazy hellions, from the dead guy with the pistol to the rocket-spewing Cyberdemon. The game is very different from the original DOOM; it has larger sprites, pseudo 3D, new textures, scrolling skies, custom scripting which allows for morphing environments, spawning items and new character animations. The levels are completely new and the game features the Unmaker weapon and an alternative end boss.

John Woo Presents Stranglehold

John Woo Presents Stranglehold

Windows - Released - September 18, 2007

Stranglehold is John Woo's first foray into videogames. Whether Woo was intimately involved in guiding Stranglehold or more of a watchful father, his influence can be felt in every frame. Midway has managed to capture the essence of a Woo film -- in some ways more than Woo has over the past decade. You get everything a fan could ask for: excessive gunplay, heavily stylized cinematic moments, melodrama, slow-motion dives, dual-fisted pistols, and, of course, doves aplenty. Some have called Woo's films a beautiful ballet of violence. Stranglehold is less ballet and more a mosh pit of bullets. Either way, lots of people die and little in the environment is left standing once the smoke clears. The spiritual successor to one of Woo's most popular films, Stranglehold puts you in the shoes of famed Inspector Tequila. Chow Yun Fat comes stateside to reprise his role (though this time in English), adding a level of authenticity. The story is convoluted -- something about a kidnapped girl, a dead cop, and drug money. The cut-scenes are sometimes dripping with melodrama. But that's a good thing. Melodrama is a John Woo signature move and, like so much in Stranglehold, it helps immerse gamers in the world of Hard Boiled.

A small team of Raiden's "Chosen Warriors" survives the attack: Mortal Kombat champion Liu Kang and his ally Kung Lao, Special Forces agents Sonya Blade and Jax, the shaman Nightwolf, the riot cop Stryker, the nomadic Kabal, and former Lin Kuei warrior Sub-Zero, who has gone rogue from his clan. Facing the warriors are the mercenary Kano, cyber-ninjas Smoke, Sektor and Cyrax, Sheeva, a female Shokan, the sorcerer Shang Tsung, and Queen Sindel herself. Mortal Kombat 3 brings new elements to the 2D fighting series: multi-level playfields, "Dial-A-Combo" attacks, a "Run" button to speed up the battles, and "Vs." codes, which unlock new powers and abilities once both players enter a code sequence in pre-match-up screens. Also included are more stage fatalities and finishing moves as each warrior attempts to go one-on-one with the Centaurian enforcer Motaro, and Shao Kahn himself. Without warning, a mysterious pyramid rises from the ground, and the tip bursts into flames, attracting the warriors' curiosity to see what it was. The kombatants fought one another to get to the top, while Blaze, the gods' firespawn revealed himself to them. The firespawn was created by Delia, a powerful Edenian sorceress, and the mother of the main character in "Konquest" mode to destroy each fighter that would threaten him in order to save the realms from Armageddon. NFL Blitz 2000

NFL Blitz 2000

Sony Playstation - Released - August 24, 1999

The two teams line up seven per side. It's a typical first and 30 on the initial play from scrimmage. The quarterback snaps the ball only to be pummeled well after the play is over. But there's no flag on the field -- he doesn't even expect one. Why would he when there's no men in zebra-striped shirts (referees) anywhere near the playing field? It's just another day on the gridiron with NFL Blitz 2000. Continuing Midway's popular NFL Blitz franchise, this sophomore effort features all of the original's mayhem -- and then some. The unique elements that distinguished the original from "realistic" football games remain intact: fewer players (each with superhuman potential), a faster pace, tougher first down requirements, and bone-crushing, less-than-sportsmanlike (can you say "understatement"?) hits, just to name a few. There are several new features that highlight this turn-of-the-millennium edition. As many as four players (up from two) can choose from more plays than featured in the original, even developing some of their own with the new Play Editor. Audibles can now be called at the line, and several new fields and stadiums are available. A simple tap of the L2 button on offense activates the Blitz Passing feature, allowing players to throw to a receiver identified by a button symbol instead of just aiming at one blinking target as in standard play. Also added to this version, a team achieves "on fire" status when the defense sacks the quarterback twice in a row or the offense completes three straight passes to a single receiver. Just as in Midway's NBA Jam, the awesome speed and power of a team in such as state (including unlimited Turbo meter) can often mean the difference in a game. It takes a great play from the temporarily overmatched other team to extinguish the flames. Keeping consistent with 1999's adjustments to NFL teams, NFL Blitz 2000 replaces the Oilers with the Tennessee Titans and adds the expansion Cleveland Browns. All other 29 teams are included, of course, each featuring players with abilities based upon 1998 statistics. Even highly touted draft picks such as New Orleans' Ricky Williams are included. As with the previous version, three modes of play are available in NFL Blitz 2000. Power-Up Baseball

Power-Up Baseball

Arcade - Unreleased

Midway had worked on a baseball game in the NBA Jam lineage. The game used the same photo capture technology as NBA Jam, had similarly exaggerated movement, and a charismatic announcer of its own (in this case, White Sox legend “Hawk” Harrelson). It was a collaboration between NBA Jam creator Midway Games and Golden Tee Golf creator Incredible Technologies, attempting to combine the best of both worlds. Cabinets were made and put out for test briefly in the Chicago area before the game was quietly canceled. With the exception of those few players who happened to play it at the time, the game was never seen, until programmer Chris Oberth's archive of the game was obtained in 2021.

Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2

Sony Playstation 2 - Released - October 23, 2000

Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2 is a boxing game for the Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and Game Boy Advance. It is also the sequel to Ready 2 Rumble Boxing. Gameplay in the game is similar to that of the previous game. The more big hits the player land consecutively, letters that spell out "RUMBLE" appear below the player's side of the screen. Letters also appear when the fighter taunts his opponent. Once the word is formed, powerful combo attacks can be activated that will almost definitely knock the opponent down. This time, however, there are three levels of "RUMBLE", which build up one after the other. If the player successfully lands a combo with his RUMBLE Meter full on the third level (where the letters start smoking), the final blow can launch the opponent clear out of the ring, giving the player an instant victory.

The game's graphics were created using a technology Midway called "digital skin", which mapped photographs onto 3D models.
