2 Games in 1: Sonic Battle + ChuChu Rocket!

2 Games in 1: Sonic Battle + ChuChu Rocket!

Nintendo Game Boy Advance - Released - November 16, 2005

Sonic Battle is a fast paced pseudo-fighting game, akin to Super Smash Brothers from Nintendo. Rather than being 3D side-scrolling, this game employs a 3D isometric view- not a static, sprite-based field though, it is comprised of actual texture-mapped polygons. The character sprites are 2D though, and while you think it wouldn't work- it does :P You can have 9 characters to choose from, 5 modes of play; Story, Battle, Challenge, Training, and Mini Games; you can link up 4 GBA's to fight your friends, each character has a bunch of moves you can use to beat the you-know-what out of whoever you're fighting. It has a system of selecting Aerial, Ground, and Guard based attacks, and depending on what type of attack you set for which area (aerial/ground/guard), you have a possibility of 9 total different special attacks to choose from (only 3 at a time in a match though) which you can change each time you lose 1 stock point. ChuChu Rocket is an action puzzler, designed predominantly as a multi-player game. You have indirect control over mice, and must guide them to the safety of a rocket, and away from a cat. You do this by placing arrows on the ground, which they will follow. The multi-player game is a frantic all-against-all duel, in which each player's mice will only follow instructions of their own colour. You can play this mode on your own against CPU opponents, or take on a series of predefined puzzles

Christmas NiGHTS into Dreams...

Christmas NiGHTS into Dreams...

Sega Saturn - Released - November 22, 1996

The story of Christmas Nights follows Elliot and Claris during the holiday season following their adventures with Nights. Though they both enjoy the Christmas season, they feel as if something is missing. Finding that the Christmas Star that usually sits at the top of the Twin Seeds Christmas tree is missing, the pair head off to Nightopia to find it. There, they meet up with Nights again and re-explore Spring Valley, which has now been Christmas-ified due to the kids' dreams of the holiday season. The trio of heroes must now take down a revived Gillwing and retrieve the Christmas Star from his lair. The game uses the Saturn's internal clock to change elements of the game according to the date and time. In November and January, the title screen label "Nights: Limited Edition" is changed to "Winter Nights", with the lush greenery of the environment being replaced by white snow. During December, "Christmas Nights" mode is activated, resulting in further Christmas-themed alterations, such as item boxes becoming Christmas presents, Nightopians dressing in elf costumes, and Christmas trees replacing Ideya captures. The background music is replaced by an instrumental version of "Jingle Bells", as well as there being a "Christmas-like" rendition of the boss theme. During the "Winter Nights" period, the weather in Spring Valley will change according to what hour it is. Other cosmetic changes are visible on New Year's Day, and loading the game on April Fool's Day results in Reala replacing Nights as the playable character.

ChuChu Rocket!

ChuChu Rocket!

Nintendo Game Boy Advance - Released - June 11, 2001

The object of the game is to guide one or more mice ("ChuChus") around a board into one or more goals while avoiding cats ("KapuKapus") roaming the board. The mice and cats all move in predictable paths by always turning right when hitting a wall head on, by following corners or by turning around when in a dead end. ChuChu Rocket!'s multiplayer mode revolves around up to four players placing arrows on the level at once, trying to direct mice into their own rockets and cats into other players' rockets (any cat that reaches a rocket removes a percentage of the mice within). Each player can only have three arrows on-screen at a time and cannot place them on other players' arrows or their own arrows. Arrows would disappear over time, or could be removed by a player placing his fourth arrow (which would eliminate the first arrow placed, thus leaving three). Although a simple concept, this quickly becomes frenetic with the relentless speed of the mice and four players fighting over them.

Puyo Pop Fever

Puyo Pop Fever

Nintendo GameCube - Released - February 27, 2004

Accord, teacher of the local magic school, has lost her magic flying cane. There is word of an award so the students are busy searching high and low for it. Naturally, our heroes Amitie and her school nemesis Raffine make their way toward the distant dark castle, challenging - and being challenged by - everyone you come across in a game of Puyo Pop. Puyo Pop Fever is a puzzle game of the falling-block variety, the goal of which is to clear your blocks (Puyos) by combining four or more of the same color, which will then vanish. This will produce Nuisance Puyos. These colorless Puyos will fall onto your opponents screen, thus blocking chains and combos they could create. These pesky Puyos can only be exterminated by removing neighboring Puyos. When an opponent sends Nuisance Puyos to your screen you can try to "offset" by clearing your own Puyos and limiting the number that would fall on your screen. This will also increase your Fever Meter. When this meter fills you will be given a set of prearranged Puyos with which you can wrack up giant combos and send tons of Nuisance Puyos to your opponent. When any player's field becomes so full that they can no longer drop Puyos they lose the game. The game features a two-player mode. Some versions allow for more people such as the DS version which allows up to eight players to compete in free-for-all or team modes.

The gameplay, however, is quite similar to Puyo Puyo 15th Anniversary - swamp your opponents in a flood of Nuisance Puyo across 5 (less compared to 15th Anniversary) different game play modes and move on to the next area. As usual, there is also the battle mode, where up to 4 players (8 on the DS version) compete to see who is the best Puyo popper. As in 15th Anniversary, only the Original Puyo Puyo, Puyo Puyo 2, and Fever rules are available in 8-player games.

Puyo Puyo Tetris

Nintendo 3DS - Released - February 6, 2014

What happens when two classic puzzle games collide? Culture shock, and lots of it! That's what the characters of the Puyo Puyo series find themselves in when a whole host of crazy characters claiming to be Tetris masters crash into the Puyoverse. And it's not only Tetris they want to play - they also claim to be pretty good at Puyo popping! Can these two brainteasers co-exist without driving each other crazy? Puyo Puyo Tetris is a combination of the Puyo Puyo and Tetris series in which the player battles through seven chapters of 10 stages each, playing as a total of 26 characters in the hopes of determining which puzzle game series is the better of the two. As usual, the objective is to score chains and drown opponents in a wave of Nuisance Puyos and/or extra blocks. But the rules change every time - one match might have the player(s) swapping between Puyo Puyo and Tetris fields, while another may allow them to use items to hinder opponents' progress. Also, at certain points, the player will encounter challenges, where the objective is to reach a certain goal before time runs out. The traditional battle mode is of course still intact, with up to 4 players battling for Puyo (or Tetris, or who knows? Maybe both) bragging rights.

Puyo Puyo Tetris

Nintendo Wii U - Released - February 6, 2014

The object of this head-to-head puzzle game is to clear your grid of falling patterns, called puyos, by forming chains of four or more same-colored puyos in a straight line or one of several geometric patterns. What makes this a challenging two-player contest is the fact that when you clear a chain of puyos from your grid, it drops a random piece of filler onto your opponent’s grid. The more puyos you clear, the more you fill your opponent’s grid, and if you can clutter up his grid enough to fill it to the top, you’ve won the game. An intriguing backstory makes this an amusing experience for one or two players.

For the most part, the game remains the same - match four Puyos in a row and swallow up your opponent in an avalanche of Nuisance Puyos. But the rules change each time you face a new opponent, with a series of new modes (plus the basic modes from the first two "Puyo" games and also from "Puyo Pop Fever") ready to test your Puyo skills. In addition to the traditional story mode, where a single player takes on 8 other characters in hopes of earning the medal, there is also the traditional battle mode, where up to 4 players (8 on the DS version) battle it out (by themselves or in teams) to the last.

Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary

Nintendo 3DS - Released - December 15, 2011

Puyo Puyo 20th Anniversary is an installment in the Puyo Puyo series. Gameplay-wise, the basic elements of Puyo Puyo are still there - eliminate Puyos and bury your opponents in a landslide of Nuisance Puyos. But in addition to the standard "Puyo Puyo", "TSU" and "Fever" rules, there are also new gimmick modes and modes returning from past Puyo Puyo games. The most noticeable rule change in the game, however, may be the "Pair Puyo" mode, a co-op mode where two teams of two players battle it out to end all their opponents' lives. In the standard Story Mode, players take one of 24 characters through their own 8-stage course, which all fit into the big picture as Ekoro (Ringo Andou's antagonist from Puyo Puyo 7) rises again to cause chaos to the world. In addition, several of the characters can have alternate voices, and still others can have alternate costumes. The battle mode is still intact, with up to 4 (8 in the DS and 3DS versions) players fighting it out across the various gameplay modes.

Samba De Amigo 2000

Samba De Amigo 2000

Sega Dreamcast - Released - December 14, 2000

This game is the update to the original, maraca shaking, Samba de Amigo. A lot more has been added than in most updates. A new hustle maneuver complements the six original ones giving life to a related mode of play requiring to shake maracas and assume poses in new manner; the song list has been nearly doubled, with many new songs such as Vamos de Carnaval, the theme from Rocky and even the Wedding March being included. All songs can optionally be played shaking and posing in the previous instalment's way, or rather in Hustle Mode: wholly different game experiences follow from one or the other of the two of the choices. For anyone who thought they had the original game mastered, there's a survival mode where you have to play through all 43 songs making a maximum of 8 mistakes in total. The Challenge mode is refreshed with new goals to achieve, as well as five secret stages intending to set the player before a more exacting challenge. The core gameplay effectively remains the same as the original though. This game was only released in Japan.

Samba de Amigo ver. 2000

Samba de Amigo ver. 2000

Sega Naomi - Released - 2000

Samba de Amigo: Ver. 2000, was released in Japan for the arcades and the Dreamcast. It is an upgraded version, and it contains 14 new songs, as well as six new downloadable songs for the home version. Whereas in the original game, there were only three songs to choose in each stage, this version allows the player to choose several. "Love Love/Couples" Mode, originally available only in the home version of Samba de Amigo, is included in the arcade version of Ver. 2000. A new character named Amiga joins the cast. She is Amigo's sister, and wields a tambourine. In the home version, a new volleyball game replaces the original minigames. Survival mode was also added, where the player must finish as many songs in a row as they can. In addition, the Challenge mode has new goals, as well as five new secret stages that are quite difficult. The most significant addition to Ver. 2000 is the new "Hustle Mode". In this mode, the player must still follow the dots and shake the maracas in the appropriate location, but this is done a lot less often. Instead, Pose appears frequently, and in addition to making the player do static poses, he will be shaking his maracas in certain patterns that the player must mimic. These patterns include either shaking one or both maracas back and forth between two of the six positions, doing a full 360° rotation starting from one position, and looping all the way back around,. All the songs in the game, including the ones previously found in the first version, have both Original and Hustle Mode patterns. Samba de Amigo Ver. 2000 was announced for North American release, under the name Samba de Amigo Ver. 2001, but it was among the games that were canceled when Sega discontinued support for their console.

Sega Superstars

Sega Superstars

Sony Playstation 2 - Released - November 3, 2004

There are a total of 12 different full games to play in the main mode of Sega Superstars: Sonic the Hedgehog - As Sonic runs down a round tunnel, he follows the position of the player's hand. Using this method, the aim of the game is to gather rings and Chaos Emeralds in order to obtain the highest score at the end of the game. It is much like the Special Stage on Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic Heroes, and especially Sonic Rush. Samba de Amigo - Players choose a song, and then must hit 6 different targets around the screen as the 'beat balls' reach them in time with the music. Posing with hands over 2 of the targets, or holding one position until a trail of beat balls is complete, may also be required from the player. ChuChu Rocket! - Movement over a certain target on the screen will cause a bridge to raise, which the chu-chus then follow to the goal. The bridge also must be dropped at certain moments to prevent KapuKapus from destroying the score. Puyo Pop Fever - Differently colored puyos will fall from the top of the screen, and the player's body must be positioned to guide them into the corresponding pots and allow bombs to topple off the bottom of the screen. Crazy Taxi - Large movements and loud sounds must be undertaken to stop the Crazy Taxi and complete the level. Super Monkey Ball - The player must move their arms into different positions in order to guide the monkey ball around obstacles and towards the goal, picking up as many bananas as possible along the way. NiGHTS Into Dreams - NiGHTS must be controlled and navigated through rings, collecting chips along the way, by raising your arms into a 'flying' position and adjusting them along the way. House of the Dead - A multitude of different zombies must be attacked and defeated by hitting them. Innocent people who occasionally appear must also be avoided. Virtua Striker - As footballs drop from the top of the screen, the aim is to head them into differently colored and scored balloons on the opposite side of the screen in order to obtain the highest score. Virtua Fighter - Standing to one side, players kick and punch the corresponding attack prompts on the screen in order to defeat the opponent. Block and counter prompts also appear, and must be reacted to accordingly. Space Channel 5 - Different dance move combination must be remembered when shown by the Morolians, and then repeated in time to the music by hitting six different buttons on the screen. Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg - By waving their hands over two different targets, players must move Billy and the egg around, and crush enemies and collect fruits along the way to the goal.

Sonic & Knuckles Collection

Sonic & Knuckles Collection

Windows - Released - March 20, 1997

Sonic & Knuckles Collection is a Sonic the Hedgehog compilation game for Microsoft Windows-based PCs, released in 1997. This collection includes: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Sonic & Knuckles Sonic 3 & Knuckles Blue Sphere The European and North American versions of the collection also includes Sonic the Screensaver which the player can customize Windows with Sonic themes, wallpapers, icons, and music from Sonic 1, 2, 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, and the Japanese & European soundtrack of Sonic the Hedgehog CD in 11 kHz WAV format. However, in Japan, Sonic & Knuckles Collection and Sonic the Screensaver were released separately, on the same day. Some tracks in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 were replaced due to sound card limitations. This game is virtually impossible to play in windowed mode on any system with a CPU faster than 350 MHz, because the game does not have speed-limiting routines enabled in this mode. The timings used by the game are based on the monitor's refresh rate. Switching the game to fullscreen mode lets the game play properly, no matter what the system speed is. In windowed mode, the game can be played at the correct speed whenever the screen refresh rate is at 60Hz. Sega has also provided a patch to fix this problem without reducing the refresh rate.

There was also a Master Emerald, which was the controller of the Chaos Emeralds and could either negate or amplify the Chaos Emerald's power. One of the chao living near the shrine of the Emeralds accidentally made contact with the holy water in the shrine and mutated to become a peaceful creature that could use the power of water called Chaos and became the guardian of the rest of the chaos there. Later on, a tribe of echidnas, led by Pachamac, angered Chaos by attempting to steal the Chaos Emeralds, ruining the sanctuary it was protecting and attempted a mass massacre on the chao living there. They were all but completely destroyed within a single night and Chaos, in his fury, used the negative power of the Chaos Emeralds to transform into Perfect Chaos and slaughtered all the echidnas. Pachamac's daughter, Tikal, had pleaded with Pachamac but he refused to listen to her. Tikal then prayed to the Master Emerald after Perfect Chaos had left to destroy the entire world to seal herself with Chaos inside the Master Emerald.

Sonic Adventure 2: The Trial

Sonic Adventure 2: The Trial

Sega Dreamcast - Released - November 15, 2000

Sonic Adventure 2: The Trial, not to be confused with Sonic Adventure 2: Trial Version, is a free demo of Sonic Adventure 2 for the Sega Dreamcast, which was bundled with releases of Phantasy Star Online. It is an earlier prototype than Sonic Adventure 2 (Preview). Sonic Adventure 2: The Trial includes one level (City Escape) from Sonic Adventure 2, with dialogue spoken completely in Japanese, accompanied by English subtitles. The translation for the opening helicopter escape cutscene is also slightly different - in this demo, one of the pilots exclaims, "What the hell?", while in the final version, this line was changed to, "What in the world?". This demo differs in several ways from the final version, the most notable difference being that Sonic still wears his original trademark shoes. It wasn't until a few months before the retail release of Sonic Adventure 2 that Sonic Team revealed a merchandising deal with Soap Shoes. Other changes in Sonic Adventure 2: The Trial include a different logo, different road-side billboards, different sound effects, looser controls and physics, and an instrumental version of the song, Escape from the City. When the player waits through the title screen, a video plays. This video shows prototype footage, including Sonic in Sky Rail, which Sonic does not access in the final version of Sonic Adventure 2.

Sonic Adventure International

Sonic Adventure International

Sega Dreamcast - Released - October 14, 1999

Sonic Adventure International is a Japanese exclusive re-release of the original Sonic Adventure. This re-release was due to Sonic Adventure being rushed to the market in Japan and having several bugs and unimplemented features. The US release had more development time thus the game was closer to what its developers had intended for it to be. Sonic Adventure International is the same as that version, but with added features. Notably, complete English and Japanese language voice tracks are included, as well as subtitles in English, German, French, and Spanish. There is also a more solid framerate, tweaked cameras, additional voice clips and a number of new download contests (some country-specific). Some graphics were tweaked or changed completely such as the removal of the neon cowgirl billboard from Casinopolis. The World Ranking mode allows people from multiple regions to upload best times to an international scoreboard for prizes. A demo of this version was made available for rent for a limited time in 1999 called Sonic Adventure: Limited Edition.
