Airball

Airball

Nintendo Entertainment System - Unlicensed - 2007

The player begins every round atop inflating stations. These inflating stations, which are scattered throughout the arenas, also act as checkpoints. Remaining atop an inflating station for too long will cause the player to burst. A bar gauge at the bottom of the screen allows the player to monitor their air level. Originally planned for release by Tengen in 1990 but cancelled along with several other titles when Tengen abandoned publishing for the system in the wake of the infamous Tetris lawsuit. Several prototypes surfaced over the years with the presumed completed version being given an "official" cartridge release by Retrozone in 2007,

Around the World in 80 Days

Around the World in 80 Days

MS-DOS - Released - 1994

Around the World in 80 Days is a children's game based on the novel of the same name. It follows the English nobleman Phineas Fogg and his sidekick Sidney (a monkey) who bets that he is able to travel around the world in 80 days. During his travels (the next destination can be picked from a world map), Phineas is presented with several situations and problems, some created by his adversary Baron Hogsbreath, which he can't solve without the player's help. The player can interact with the scene with four painting tools, e.g. the pencil Nick is used to draw things which then become real or the rubber Winston is used to remove things from the scene. For example, when a museum's curator refuses to let Sidney into the museum, the player can remove the word "no" from a sign which says "no monkeys allowed". The things the player can do in each scene are limited, e.g. Nick only has two or three things available to draw, and there is no way to fail. The dialogue and animations are humorous. The educational aspect of the game is about improving the player's reading skill and broaden the vocabulary. For this reason, the player can click on some "hot words" (e.g. foreign expressions) to get an explanation of their meaning.

This results in solutions to the problems and features humorous dialogues and animations. The Paintbox also features an hourglass character which is used for rewinding time, and a book character which is used for tasks such as loading, saving et cetera. For example, the pencil can be used to draw things in a connect-the-dots style, or the paintbrush can be used to color objects to be different colors depending on the situation. The player can experience the game many times in many ways - each pass is different depending on the player's choices of what to use when an obstacle occurs in the story. While the majority of the story remains the same during each pass, every one of the Pals provides different solutions at various times and only some of the Pals present a solution for a given situation.
