.hack//frägment

.hack//frägment

Sony Playstation 2 - Released - November 23, 2005

.hack//frägment is a multiplayer online game based on the fictional MMORPG, The World. It was released only in Japan on November 23, 2005 and online service ended on January 18, 2007, after being extended two months because of its popularity. Famitsu Weekly gave .hack//frägment a cumulative score of 29 out of 40 over four reviews, much like its reviews of the main series. Designer Hiroshi Matsuyama described the game as a way to see how players would react to online play. The game uses the same game engine as the .hack video game series and thus, its gameplay is identical, with the exception of online mode. Players explore areas and fight monsters in real time. A major difference is that during online play, the action does not pause when the menu is opened. Players may still use the skill "Data Drain" to weaken monsters and collect rare items. The user interface and control scheme are otherwise unchanged. Players may create their characters based on a number of preset body shapes and color schemes and may choose a class (such as Wavemaster or Twin Blade) and character name. In online mode, players may enter a lobby and search for a maximum of two other players to join them on an adventure. The game includes an expanded communication interface that allows players to chat, send e-mail, post to an in-game Bulletin Board System, and receive server news updates. It is possible to establish ad-hoc chat rooms separate from the public-access ones. Guilds are permanent, exclusive chat rooms for members. In offline mode, players may level up, obtain items, and learn new skills as one of their online mode characters without the need for an Internet connection. Players may invite characters from the .hack games, .hack//Sign, and .hack//Legend of the Twilight into their party. The "story mode" of .hack//frägment is identical to that of the .hack games, with the player's created character replacing Kite. While offline, players may use a PC utility called "HackServer" to create areas and dungeons and release them online. The creators of the most popular areas are given the ability to add strong monsters for players to defeat.

.hack//G.U. Vol. 2: Reminisce

Sony Playstation 2 - Released - May 8, 2007

The second release in a series of three, .hack//G.U.: Vol. 2 -- Reminisce takes place in a fictional MMO environment called The World. As in previous releases of .hack, The World features elements of online gaming without the actual connection. Gamers interact with people they might find in a real MMO, take on quests, and adventure across a large environment as they increase their level. In this version of The World, gamers find the once-utopian landscape is now a player killer's (PKers) heaven. A bug in the game is blocking the log-off ability to all fictional gamers; effectively locking them into The World. Now, bands of PKers prey on every character in their path hoping that the slaughter knocks them out of the game and back into real life. Gamers take the role of Haseo, a killer of players who is stuck in the game. Haseo must work his way through The World by interacting with other character, defeating enemies in dungeon sprawls, and by completing assigned objectives. Navigation through the game requires the use of Warp points located around the map.

.hack//G.U. Vol. 3: Redemption

.hack//G.U. Vol. 3: Redemption

Sony Playstation 2 - Released - September 10, 2007

It is 2017 and the dangers found in .hack//G.U.: Vol. 3 Redemption are filtering out of the game. The evil entity terrorizing players in "The World" is free and wreaking havoc in real-life. Players once again take the role of Haseo, a young adventurer who is the only hope for restoring peace in "The World." Gamers lead Haseo through many recognizable environments and into such new root towns as Breg Epona and the Net Slum. The steam bike makes a return and players can now upgrade their bikes and speed through five riding missions. Toward the end of the game, players may access a 100 floor dungeon and work through each level with their most powerful party members. Haseo has earned a few upgrades via a mysterious hacker who broke into his account and added a new set of powers. These powers, called the "Xth" form, allow Haseo to use a pair of pistols with blades on the barrel. With these weapons Haseo can deal greater damage and perform a "double trigger" attack by invoking a special ability. The level cap is increased to 150, and gamers can add up to 22 additional avatars to their party. In the heat of battle, if players find themselves at the losing end, they can access the "avatar awakening" power and drain the virus cores from the enemy. Additionally, there are new cards for the "Crimson Versus" game and a new arena battle.

Chart expeditions to find resources, craft survival essentials and explore strange new worlds in a procedural, very-much-permadeath adventure. As captain, it's your duty to keep the crew happy - they're less likely to kill you that way. Manage relationships as you watch them grow closer and hopefully not throw each other out the airlock.

A Closed World

Web Browser - Unreleased - 2011

A Closed World was created to be a digital game that deals with queer issues, something that's very uncommon in games right now. Game designers and marketing professionals alike have cited a number of reasons for this, ranging from a perception of institutional homophobia in game culture to a genuine desire on the part of game designers to "get it right" and create games with compelling queer content, rather than feeling that the element is merely "tacked on" in the end. The goal of this research was to present the design team with the challenge of creating a game that had this compelling queer content, and to observe the ideas and hardships they considered and encountered along the way, so that we could learn more about how to approach those challenges in other design contexts. The project left the ultimate message of the game open to the creators; what was important to discover were the challenges the team faced trying to include queer content in the game, and the strategies they used to tell the story they wanted to tell. The result is a game that asks us to carefully consider what we think of as "normal," and what is needed to live in the world and be true to one's self.

A.I.M. 2: Clan Wars

A.I.M. 2: Clan Wars

Windows - Released - February 17, 2006

A.I.M. 2 is the sequel to the science fiction action game A.I.M.: Artificial Intelligence Machines by the same development studio. The story and overall look lift off exactly where the the first game ended. Changes in the control system have led to new opportunities for the inhabitants of the Polygon planet. Mechminds, advanced robots, opened new sectors and have started exploring them. With the course of time Mechminds and their culture have altered greatly with some old clans fading away as new ones evolved. New clans led by Mechminds of the Fifth Generation are powerful and well-organized formations with far-reaching plans. Powerful groups have different interests that often crossed, war broke out again. However this time it is the struggle not for mere control, this is struggle for survival. The clans want to eliminate the weaker ones standing in their way and will stop at nothing to dominate their enemies. To achieve their goals they use not only military means, but economic ones as well. As of now none of the clans has managed to achieve complete victory. You are a part of the oldest clan called the Reckoners, a dedicated group looking for the firstborn Mechmind of the Fifth Generation. Abandoned Places: A Time for Heroes

MS-DOS - Released - 1992

In this RPG, you play the role of four heroes whose mission is to save their world, Kalynthia, from the evil arch mage Bronagh. Most of the time, while exploring the over world, the game is shown in a 2D top-down view. It gives you much freedom: there's more to do than just stick to the main quest. Towns have a static interface where you reach the wished location by pressing the according symbol. e.g. a church for healing up or a sage for hints. During dungeon crawls the game switches to a 3D view and plays similar to Dungeon Master. As usual for this kind of games you see the dungeon in a small windows while your characters are shown on the right hand side of the screen. Dungeon sequences are completely in real-time. This includes combat which basically consists of clicking on a character's weapon or magic spell and then clicking on the monster. After every usage of a weapon/spell you have to wait a certain time until you can use it again.

Abyss Odyssey

Abyss Odyssey

Windows - Released - July 15, 2014

Normally sleep is healthy, but that does not apply in the world of Abyss Odyssey: the nightmares of a powerful warlock opened up a right in 1890's Chile. To defeat the monsters which enter through it, Katrien enters the randomly generated Abyss to defeat the warlock. The story does play a minor part, but items with background information can be found during play. While the game itself is a side-scrolling platformer, combat has similarities to fighting games: Katrina has a number of regular attacks, throws and special attacks to her disposal which are activated with button combinations. This is also evident because of the cancelling move which allows to directly transition from a normal move into a special move or into a dash. However, this costs cancelling points. The enemies have also their own move set and, by performing a special attack at the right time, the player can take over their soul. This allows to morph into them on the fly and make use of their skills. During the course of the game two additional characters (Ghost Monk and Pincoya) can be unlocked which also come with their own weapons and moves. Killing enemies reward experience points and eventually level-ups. Those reward additional moves as well as skill points which can be used to make the moves more powerful. Additional weapons or other equipment can be found in the levels or bought in stores. While the game has a permadeath mechanic, death is not automatically the end: when the player manages to reach the next checkpoint with a generic (and weaker) soldier, the character is revived. Stores also hold expensive items which translate into a revival at the last checkpoint. When all those options are exhausted, the player needs to start a new try in a new Abyss. While equipment and gold is lost, experience points and character level carries over. The Windows version received a number of content patches which added a few new enemies, a competitive multiplayer mode (two players online, four players offline) and the harder nightmare difficulty. Those new features remained mostly exclusive to the platform (except nightmare difficulty on PS3) until the Extended Dream Edition arrived on PS4. It is functionally identical to Windows version 1.10.
