10 Computer Hits

10 Computer Hits

Amstrad CPC - Released - 1985

10 Computer Hits is the first in what would prove to be a lucrative series of compilations for Beau Jolly. Although published on all of the main 8-bit formats of the time, the content of the compilations varied from machine to machine by virtue of Beau Jolly's policy of picking up cheap licences from publishers who generally didn't have enough material (or funds) of their own to publish a compilation of their own. The compilation was also notable for being one of the first to be advertised on British televison. Games included were: * Chuckie Egg (A 'n' F) * Pinball Wizard (CP Software) * Killer Gorilla (Micropower) * Heroes of Karn (Interceptor) * Special Operations (Lothlorien) * Flight Path 737 (Anirog) * Ghouls (Micropower) * Defend or Die (Alligata) * The Covenant (PSS) * Jack and the Beanstalk (Thor) While most of these were older titles when the compilation was released, The Covenant was still viewed as fairly new (having been released only two months earlier).

Design your track layouts using a multitude of interlocking straights, curves, crisscrosses and intersecting slant pieces. Get help coupling track pieces by using the "Smart Track" option. Make your creation real by adding buildings, trees, bridges, tunnels and other automated objects (like a working crane or a rotating dumper). Using the Layout Editor, choose your locale - from the backyard, kitchen, basement, miniature animated town, a dinosaur farm or even the North Pole or the Moon! Finished projects can be played as well as posted on the Internet for others to download. The beginning tutorials outline the basic play functions (driving trains, moving from track to track, and managing loads). Then you are presented with a series of puzzle scenarios in five "job bins" with varied difficulty that can be played in any order, or skipped altogether if found to be too challenging. Finishing all of the jobs in a bin unlocks bonus tasks with a special animation reward.

A pirate quartermaster

Windows - Released - October 2, 2020

Come and discover the real life of a pirate, a man who has left the tyrannical but honest world of kings and emperors in order to sail in equality and freedom. Put yourself in the shoes of a quartermaster, the first mate of a pirate ship. You will have to manage the ambition of your captain, because you guess that his interests will not always be in line with those of the crew. Thus, you will have to confront him in order to defend your sailors’ rights. Enforcing the law will be part of your job, and avoiding injustice is essential on a ship with so few hierarchies. But who knows? Perhaps you will prefer to defend your captain's wishes? Handle a sailboat or a steamship to get you where you need to go! Steer, rig, heat, fish, clean, maintain, heal... You will experience the phases of ship management in a turn based system, punctuated by the sound of the watch bell. The time unit on a boat is not the day, but the watch, because an unattended ship is a ship on the ocean floor that shelters sharks and octopuses. Your everyday enemies will be hunger and thirst, for sure. But a sailor's worst enemy is disease. Know how to defend yourself against it. You will have at your disposal tools that will enable you to manage the proper conduct of the ship and the possibility of modifying her compartments as you wish. At each new game, the map will be generated procedurally. The wealth and characteristics of peoples will be redistributed randomly. You will have to transmit the captain's orders during the gunning phases using a rather special game mechanic, as you will have to type the orders on the keyboard (possibility to click with the mouse if you have a hook instead of fingers). You will also have to fight fiercely in hand-to-hand combat during boarding. Initially, you will understand that life on a ship is slow, because all travels are long, otherwise, during battles, life suddenly intensifies and the pace changes. Remember that there may be women on the ship, you may even be one of them. You would operate in the shadows, because a woman is not accepted on a ship. She brings bad luck. But don't forget: if there is a deck where a woman can end up being accepted, end up imposing herself, it's the deck of a pirate ship! Treasure maps, artifacts, monkey business and discoveries will also spice up your daily life in the ocean.

The game is played in real time, with a day/night cycle and a game world that changes regardless of the player's actions. Compared to its more widely known sequels, A Ressha de Ikou has a rather simple gameplay that is confined to building tracks for just one train line, the titular A-train. Aces of the Deep

Aces of the Deep

MS-DOS - Released - 1994

Coming two years before the famed "Silent Hunter" Aces of the deep was a deep submarine simulation game. Coming at the tale end of Dynamix's period vehicle simulators (including "Red Barron" and "Aces of the Pacific") Aces of the Deep is a very polished simulation following in that tradition. The game starts with the player selecting a period of the Second World War to serve in. It is possible to play the game from the start of the war until the bitter end. The player takes command of a U-boat and attempts to fulfill optional missions including convey hunting and area patrols. The game gives the player command over every vital function of the U-boat including designating the speed, orientation, and depth of the boat. Furthermore the player is responsible for finding enemy ships through a periscope. These ships, and the waves of the sea, are beautifully (for the time) 3d modeled with an eye towards historical accuracy. Once a ship has been found the player must correctly calculate the run of torpedoes through a relatively deep targeting computer. The game includes a midi sound track of period accurate tunes. It also features a rather diverse range of sounds for the U-boat as well as adiqute, but limited, voices for various crew-members in BOTH German and English. All in all, Aces of the Deep succeeds in fostering the player to partake in a suspenseful naval adventure. With the ability to play in "iron man mode" the choice to "CRASH DIVE!" will enthrall the aspiring WWII Wolf-pack leader. Your accomplishments will be tracked versus a leader board that is historically accurate to other legendary commanders. Gain medals for your service and catch-up on the news at the local brothel in between patrols to get the latest scoop on where fertile hunting ground may be. HAPPY HUNTING!

Achtung Panzer Operation Star: Complete Edition

Across the Rhine

Across the Rhine

MS-DOS - Released - July 1, 1995

Across the Rhine: 1944 - 1945 Armored Combat in Western Europe is a mix between strategy and simulation game set during WWII. The game focuses on single tank battles during the Allied invasion of Normandy - this means the player can't influence the overall outcome of the war. The battles are mostly historically accurate but some of them use hypothetical situations. The basic situation however is always the same: the player is in charge of tank battalions and tries to defeat his enemy. The player is presented with several windows which show different information, e.g. a tactical map, a strategical map or a battlefield from a tank's view. The size and position of these windows can be freely arranged. From these windows he also gives orders to his tanks, e.g. assigning waypoints or changing the behaviour. All this is in real-time. The player has also the opportunity to directly take control over a tank - there he has the choice between several viewpoints, including the driver's or gunner's view, and controls movement and turret. Optionally the AI can take care of the movement. This part of the game is more simulation than action game. During the three campaigns the player takes control over both parties. He assembles a soldier which, depending on the battle performances, gets promoted during the course of the game which results in the command over more units. There are also many options to set the realism of the game in different areas, e.g. manual fuel distribution, limited ammo, morale, air support or even invulnerability.

Admiral Graf Spee

Admiral Graf Spee

Sinclair ZX Spectrum - Released - 1983

In this early naval simulation the player assumes the role of the captain of the Admiral Graf Spee, one of the fastest ships in the German side during World War II. Your mission is to patrol the South Atlantic and disrupt allied transport routes as much as possible. Enemy vessels appear as blinking dots in the map, and once the Graf Spee is in the area you have to match the course and speed of the enemy as closely as possible. After a while, the enemy, which can range from easy prey such as cargo ships to hard as nails battleships, will become within range and you will be able to engage. After several successful engagements the Altmark supply ship will appear to replenish your fuel and ammo and carry out small repairs on your ship. Depending on the player's skill, several endings are available. The high brass are willing to let you retire with full honors if you sank enough enemy ships for them, but the allied side will do anything they can to sink your ship. And if things take a turn for the worse you can always emulate the historical fate of the ship.

ADS: Advanced Destroyer Simulator

ADS: Advanced Destroyer Simulator

Atari ST - Released - 1990

Advanced Destroyer Simulator (ADS) is a naval combat simulation set in World War 2. It was the first naval simulation to use real-time filled 3D graphics. Its style and mechanics are reminiscent of Epyx's Destroyer (1986). ADS simulates the H.M.S. Onslaught, a British destroyer of the O-class fitted with three cannon turrets, four torpedo tubes on port and starboard respectively, and a sonar to detect and track submarines. In ADS, the Onslaught is not part of a flotilla. There's no campaign, gameplay is mission-based and set in three scenarios (two in the CPC version) with five mission each: The Mediterranean around Sicily, the English Channel between UK and France, and the North Sea coast of Norway. Objectives include seek-and-destroy assignments, patrols, convoy escorts, submarine hunts and blockade runs. Each scenario also offers an open “Delta” option where you cruise and hunt without specific objectives. You navigate the destroyer manually, in real-time and from a first person perspective, though with the help of a scenario map. ADS simulates ship combat as a close-quarter exchange of torpedoes and cannon fire. In proximity to enemy land bases, Stuka fighters can attack and must be shot down with the cannons. Submarines are tracked with the sonar and can only be attacked once they surface. Enemy vessels include freighters, tankers, torpedo boats, destroyers and cruisers. Most missions are time critical; in the course of the mission, it may be necessary to dock in allied ports for repairs, to refuel and restock on ammunition.

Advanced Lawnmower Simulator

Sinclair ZX Spectrum - Released - April 1, 1988

Appeared on side B of covertape Your Sinclair issue 45: Smash Tape 21. Quite possibly the best and most elaborate hoax in the history of the Spectrum, performed by the editors of Your Sinclair. "'The most advanced domestic chore simulation yet to hit the home micro,' claims the advertising blurb. 'Awe inspiringly realistic with a near infinite number of randomly generation rural and suburban lawn scenarios.' Hollow advertising rhetoric? So much insincere profit chasing hype?... Not on your grass-box, matey: this game is ACE!" This was released as an April Fool's joke, and the name was probably taking a potshot at Codemasters for their overuse of the word "simulator" in the titles of their games.

AEGIS: Guardian of the Fleet

AEGIS: Guardian of the Fleet

MS-DOS - Released - 1994

AEGIS: Guardian of the Fleet is a simulation of the U.S. Navy's Ticonderoga class guided missile cruiser. It features over 100 missions in seven battle sets and a training area, as well as a detailed "Warbook" full of interactive weapons/platform information. The main focus of the game is the realistic simulation of the war ship. It is set in modern times which means there are a lot of technical systems to the player's disposal. The most important ones are the tracking systems (e.g. radar, active or passive sonar) and weapon systems (e.g. torpedo, rockets or anti-aircraft). Every station offers many settings or actions to consider. These can be reached from the bridge where the player can switch between the stations by clicking on the corresponding monitor. There is also a tactical map which can be used to start attacks. Typical mission goals are destroying enemy units (ground targets, submarines, ships or aircraft), escorting friendly units or recon missions.

Air Combat

Air Combat

Sony Playstation - Released - June 30, 1995

In Namco's Air Combat, it is up to you to eliminate the enemy terrorist forces that threaten global prosperity. Intelligence has hinted that their main assault will be by sky and aircraft. You will engage in tactical dogfights and use any means necessary to shoot them out of the air and stop their devious plans. As you progress throughout the various missions, you are awarded cash that allows you to buy newer and better aircraft. There are a multitude of planes included, such as the Mig and the elusive Stealth Bomber. Naturally, you will have to start out with smaller, less powerful aircraft and slowly build your way up as you complete missions and earn more money. Each mission is different in objective, location, and strategy. Depending on what the mission requires of you, you must pick the aircraft most suited for the mission. Some missions require you to escort an important ambassador to safety, while others have you taking out a city's power supply, putting an end to illegal oil smuggling by destroying a refinery, and even taking out a bridge.

Air Traffic Control

MS-DOS - Unlicensed - 1988

Air Traffic Control is a shareware, single player, simulation based on Chicago's Midway Airport. Planes must be guided through the Chicago airspace, guided into a safe landing and successful take-offs. Aircraft are of two types, those which follow Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) and those which follow Visual Flight Rules (VFR) and each type needs to be treated differently. The centre of the screen represents the airport radar, around this are six coloured dialogue boxes, yellow for example contains the last incoming messages from each plane, the blue box has details if planes in a holding pattern and so-on. All on screen information is coded so "57e:PTO co 330 rway 22R", in the yellow box means Flight 57E requests permission to take off, Course 330 degrees, Runway 22R". When the game starts the player sets game parameters that govern the number of aircraft that can be expected and the frequency at which they will appear. Even though the game is played in 'compressed time' the manual reckons that a plane will take up to twenty minutes to process through to completion. Points are scored for successful take-offs and landings and are lost for delays, near misses and more. The player's score is displayed as they exit, there is no high score table

Dogfights take place in the yard or throughout a house full of curios, knick-knacks, canisters, and decorations, many of which can be destroyed and which contain special power-ups.

Airline Simulator

MS-DOS - Released - December 1, 1988

Airline Simulator is a direct descendant of subLOGIC's Airline Transport Pilot, as it's based on the same 'engine'. The avionics in Airline Simulator have been improved and feature a flight management computer, primary flight information screen, electronic flight information system and an engines & fuel panel all of which are known by acronyms FMC, PFI, EFIS & EICAS. The simulator expects the player to be familiar with all aspects of flying a passenger aircraft from radio navigation to fuel burn calculations and load-out sheets, both of which - and more - must be completed before take-off. In flight Airline Simulator monitors the pilots performance in detail allowing their ability to be rated, changes weather conditions in-flight adjusting, for example, in-flight turbulence as the player ascends/descends through cloud levels, and simulates various equipment failures. There is just one aircraft supplied with Airline Simulator, the Boeing 747-400. This is not a limitation as it would be in some simulations as the objective in this simulation is to give the player the prepare, plan and fly trans-Atlantic routes. Airline Simulator comes with over ninety routes, which in-game are called careers, and which all feature air traffic control voice transmissions. In addition the package includes shareware utilities to create and modify scenery, airports, flights, routes, navigation aids, ATC voices etc which can be used to extend the simulator world wide. Airline Simulator uses subLOGIC's scenery files which cover mainly Europe and few North American destinations, one of which is New York. (subLOGIC's USA East/West scenery was NOT included). The simulator supports the 3DAGS 3D software which allows the player to fly with 3D glasses.

Airships: Conquer the Skies

Airships: Conquer the Skies

Windows - Released - August 16, 2018

In Airships: Conquer the Skies you'll need to use all of your creativity and skill to design and build fearsome airships and land vehicles to give you the edge in massive aerial battles. Construct your vehicles by piecing together a vast array of modules, choosing weapons, armour types, structures, equipment and resources in near endless configurations to allow you to prevail against even the toughest foes. The vehicles are highly detailed, teeming with sailors moving around performing their individual tasks to stay in the fight. Your choices of vehicle layouts are crucial, exploring the design space of different crafts and their matching tactics to make sure your fleet emerges victorious. Once your vehicles are ready for the fight, you’ll give high-level commands to your small fleet, swooping, soaring, ramming and boarding others to gain the upper hand in battle. Ships and terrain are fully destructible: they can catch fire, explode, break apart, and fall, so you’ll need to choose your tactics wisely. Face off against giant aerial kraken, fleshcracker mechs, huge venomous spiders, clockwork wasps, and more. Defeat them and reap the rewards. Play across three distinctly different modes: taking on (or creating your own) bespoke Missions; building a mighty empire in Conquest, or destroying your friends in Multiplayer matches online or via LAN.

Allegiance

Allegiance

Windows - Released - March 16, 2000

Allegiance is an online multiplayer game (the only offline component is the tutorial) with action and strategy elements, comprising a fusion of real-time strategy and spaceflight combat simulation. Originally developed by Microsoft Research, the game was published for multiplayer play on Microsoft's Gaming Zone platform in 2000 under the name Allegiance Zone. The game was not commercially successfully, and its servers were shut down in 2002. In its two years of operation, the game acquired a loyal and active player community who continued to play using player-made LAN servers and client software. In 2004, Microsoft released the game's source code under a Microsoft Shared Source license, and the community has since maintained the game under the name FreeAllegiance. In 2017, the community sought to bring the game to Steam, and Microsoft changed the license to an MIT license, and it is now freely playable on Steam as Microsoft Allegiance. The community continues to operate at the FreeAllegiance web site at www.freeallegiance.org. Allegiance features six playing modes: (1) deathmatch, (2) deathmatch with a time restriction, (3) capture the flag, (4) prosperity (generating a certain income), (5) artifacts (searching for artifacts), and (6) conquest (conquering all systems). Up to 75 players can participate in a match, with 2-6 teams of 3-15 players each. The game is played as a spaceflight sim from either a first- or third-person perspective, with an overhead perspective available. Players can take control of a variety of different space ships with different tactical uses, from regular combat and stealth fighters to capital ships and utility ships, such as salvation ships which can rescue downed player pilots and allow them to respawn immediately. Players can also serve as turret gunners on other players' ships. On each team, one player serves as Commander and coordinates the team, explores unknown sectors, and sends out vehicles to exploit resources. Another player serves as Investor, administering the team's funds and using it to research, build production plants, and upgrade ships. If it is preferred, the Commander can fill both roles. While Microsoft's Gaming Zone was originally a paid subscription service, players could play for free on the reduced-feature Free Zone. A paid subscription to MSN was necessary for statistics comparisons or registering squads (similar to guilds from online role playing games).

Apollo 18

Apollo 18

Commodore 64 - Released - 1987

Apollo 18: Mission to the Moon simulates a fictional mission to the Moon in the early 1980's, following on from the last real flight (Apollo 17) before NASA cancelled the program. One of the game's key features is digitised speech, which sounds crackly like a real mission controller would. Telemetry screens provide realism, with the player having to set items and computer programs to get the crucial GO signal. The game is split into several sequences. First is launch, where pressing the button to stop a moving bar at the right point determines success. Course corrections and an orbital rendezvous (to undock the lunar module) are next. The player has to land the module safely on one of three possible landing sites before running out of fuel. The moonwalk is next, and must be completed in a set time before returning to orbit. On the way home the astronaut performs a spacewalk to capture and repair a satellite. Finally there is the re-entry sequence and splashdown.

ARMA II

ARMA II

Windows - Released - June 17, 2009

ArmA II is, as its predecessor ArmA: Combat Operations a military shooter with a high focus on realism. The game focuses on the events in the small country Chernarus which was overrun by rebels who declared a state of war. Premier Alexander Baranov then asked NATO for help to re-establish peace and order in the country. NATO responded with alerting the fast response unit as well as sending US Marines into the country to minimize civilian casualties. The first ones to arrive is Force Recon Team Razor lead by 1st Sgt Patrick Miles. Part of his team: MSgt Matt Cooper - the player. Depending on the difficulty level the player either moves Matt as well as all vehicles around in a typical first person shooter fashion or can choose a 3rd person view to explore the 225 square miles big island. Most of the time he is not alone and follows his squad mates to fulfil the various main and secondary objectives like blowing up a radio station or rescuing civilians. To defend against the many enemies, he has a vast array of real world tech at his disposal like the trusted M16 in its various forms or several different kinds of rocket launchers for every possible range. Each weapon has its own pros and cons as well as different distances their sights are calibrated to. In addition the ammunition in ArmA II follows a hard-coded flight path. But the player won't explore the land just on foot. Also at his disposal are many different kinds of tanks, helicopters and even airplanes that all handle very differently and realistically. Depending on the vehicle, there are even different positions available like gunner or tank commander. Besides the main single player campaign, the player has access to seven scenarios, a weapons chamber he can play around in to unlock additional weaponry and a powerful but complex editor that allows him to create his own missions. In the most sophisticated scenarios both in single player and multiplayer (for up to 50 players), the commander even has the ability to build up a base of operations to unlock access to additional weaponry and such. The destruction of this HQ is then the goal of the enemy team in one of the available game modes.

ARMA II: British Armed Forces

ARMA II: British Armed Forces

Windows - DLC - August 27, 2010

Two months after the Allied military victory in Takistan, the new government is restoring the war-torn country. NATO forces assisting in this effort face the threat of insurgency, waged by the remnants of the defeated Takistani army in the mountaineous regions of Takistan. Company team of British paratroopers patrolling the treacherous mountains in Zargabad's vicinity is ordered to battle the amassing guerilla warriors. The first DLC to be released after the Operation Arrowhead expansion pack, the DLC adds the British Armed Forces as a playable faction and the Shapur terrain, a small map set in the fictional Green Sea nation of Takistan. BAF contains an entirely new set of vehicles, firearms, as well as backpacks for use by the faction. Most of the content also comes in woodland and desert-camouflaged varieties for use in both environments. Dedicated British English radio protocols have been added, as well as extra British faces to expand on the existing set of selectable identities introduced with Operation Arrowhead. It includes a short singleplayer campaign which is set in the immediate aftermath of the Operation Arrowhead invasion. It follows the story of Brian Frost, a squad leader from the British Army who is deployed alongside a British task force sent to the country as part of NATO's post-invasion stabilisation efforts.

ARMA II: Operation Arrowhead

ARMA II: Operation Arrowhead

Windows - Released - June 29, 2010

ArmA II: Operation Arrowhead is the first add-on to ArmA II. It either runs stand-alone or can be integrated into the main game, transforming it into ArmA II: Combined Operations. The core of the expansion is a new campaign with eight missions, taking place three years after the liberation of Chernarus and taking place in the country of Takistan. On April 17th, 2012, a group of CIA-backed rebels attacks important oil drilling sites throughout the country, destroying a year's worth of production and 68% of all the oilfields. With the resultant economic disruption and lack of resources, the government is destabilized and lacks the resources to retain power. Institutions and societal infrastructure starts breaking down, and the country experiences unrest as people take to the streets demanding change. Desperate to shore up support and obtain resources, the Takistani government demands neighboring Karzeghistan cede the oil-rich Sharig plain to Takistan, threatening attack with chemical weapons if Karzeghistan does not comply. In response, Allied forces, under Operation Arrowhead, began building bases in rebel-controlled areas and are tasked with neutralizing any threat to Karzeghistan. Once again, the player is dropped together with his squad into the target zones to fulfill different objectives using a vast array of real-world weaponry, including more than 300 new units, weapons and vehicles like the UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle), H-64 Apache, MH-47 Chinook, AH/MH-6 Littlebird, Stryker, M3 Bradley, T-55, BTR-60, M113, UH-1H, and FN FAL, used by factions including the US Army, the United Nations, the Takistani Army and the Guerillas. Unlike the main game, the player can play not only as infantry, but can also play as a tank commander or helicopter pilot throughout the campaign. The game includes a new 15-mission tutorial. In the course of missions, the player encounters civilians who may request protection from approaching enemies. The player may accept or decline these requests, affecting the population's attitude toward the player and the allied faction in the future. When they are favorably disposed, the civilian populace may help in future missions, showing, for example, where the enemy has placed mines. On the other hand, a hostile population will turn against the player. In addition to the campaign, the add-on features seven unique scenarios, a weapons chamber the player can play around in to unlock additional weaponry, and a powerful but complex editor that allows him to create his own missions. Also back is multiplayer modes featuring Deathmatch, Team-Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Co-op and more. New, large Central-Asia-style maps with urban, desert and mountainous terrain featuring a fully destructible and interactive environment now can support 100+ players on a server. The expansion features a several other major enhancements, including a new enemy position reporting system in which the player's AI teammates give more precise and specific descriptions of enemy contacts, instead of just shouting reports like "enemy, right, far!" Also featured are detachable equipment backpacks, advanced weapon optics, and material penetration modelling.

ARMA III

ARMA III

Windows - Released - September 30, 2013

ArmA III is a military shooter which focuses on a more realistic approach than contempary first-person shooters. This means that firefights happen from large distances, squad commanders have a lot of commands available to give their soldiers and players can use various cars, tanks and aircraft (although with a less realistic flight model than Bohemia's Take on Helicopters). There are no big differences to Arma II; besides the new underwater simulation they are mostly found in details. Despite being set in 2035, there are no science-fiction elements. The scenario is in set in Mediterrian Pacific and the backdrop story is about a civil war between Altis and the island Stratis (based on Lemnos). The war parties are NATO, CSAT, AAF (the army of Altis) and FIA (a rebel organization). Both Altis and Stratis are open and are in principle open to explore. However, this is no open world game; it is mission-driven in all playing modes. The game features various co-op missions in which players (depending on the scenario, up to ten) fight against AI-controlled opponents: in "Escape from Altis" respectively "...Stratis" a squad has to visit and survive checkpoints on the island in order to escape by boat or helictoper; "Tanks" and "Combined Arms" are firefights with, well, tanks respectively infantery combined with vehicles; and "Headhunters" is a hunt against enemy officers. Special are the modes "Defend" (defending an area) and "Seize" (capture AI-controlled points) because players are divided into two teams - while they are allies, it is still possible to fight each other. In this context it is important to mention that the editor is very open, there are many user-created playing modes available and the game has no hard-coded player limit. The original release, the only singleplayer content are four challenges (shooting courses) and twelve showcase missions which basically serve as tutorials for the game's mechanics, e.g. diving, infiltration, using vehicles, sniping, using drones or various big fights. Three army showcases allow to try out all vehicles and weapons from NATO, SCAT amd AAF. Later Bohemia patched in a single-player campaign in three episodes which is set five years after the separation war between Altis and Stratis: the NATO is ready to leave the area but just then new fighting breaks out: - Episode 1: Survive - The player takes the role of Corporal Ben Kerry who is one of the remaining soldiers which were cut off. It focuses on infantry and guerilla warfare. - Episode 2: Adapt - Episode 3: Win

ARMA: Gold Edition

ARMA: Gold Edition

Windows - Released - February 26, 2008

ArmA: Combat Operations is a direct descendant of Operation Flashpoint, but the name is no longer used as Codemasters holds the IP. This military shooter with a focus on realism takes place on the fictional Atlantic island of Sahrani, divided by a communist regime in the north and a democratic monarchy in the south. When US forces leave the south after a training, the northern dictator decides to attack the south. The player takes control of one soldier of a squad who has not left the island yet, to assist the local militia. The campaign measures up to 400 square kilometers, 4 times as large as in its predecessor, using the Real Virtuality 2 engine. Unlike Operation Flashpoint, players may now jump into other units than one designated character during missions. The main campaign offers over 20 missions with non-linear options. The game AI can also act independently from the player's actions. The focus on realism is reflected in the weapon and vehicle models, weapon ballistics, sighting, damage, recoil and reloading. There are destructible objects and terrain, and animals, even birds and insects, react to movement and action on the terrain. The player cannot jump, but swimming has been introduced. Multiplayer allows as many players to join as the server supports, and AI NPCs, both as allies and foes, can also be added. There is also a cooperative mode for the singleplayer missions, and with the included editor, complex battle scenarios can be scripted. The Gold Edition contains: - ArmA: Combat Operations (base game) - ArmA: Queen's Gambit expansion

MS-DOS - Released - October 1, 1997

Based on the same engine as Comanche 3, Novalogic once again delivered a tank simulator using their VoxelSpace technology. Similar to most Novalogic simulations, this product is targeted more at an action-oriented audience not seeking too much realism. Armored Fist 2 has over 50 pre-scripted missions set on campaigns in Europe, Asian, Africa, and the Middle East. The tank can be controlled through various views such as the gunner's station, driver's port, commander's seat, or exterior views. Ascii Sector

Ascii Sector

MS-DOS - Homebrew - September 13, 2007

Ascii Sector is a free-roaming, space-faring, sci-fi RPG game, focusing on combat and trading. As its early title suggest, it is a fan-made remake of Privateer, borrowing its setting (e.g. you'll face the Kilrathi), but presented in 2D graphics made of ASCII characters, roguelike style, albeit in real-time and with mouse-driven menus. Just as in Privateer, you're an aspiring freelancer who had just bought a cheap, used space ship, hoping to get rich. The player will jump between solar systems, trading goods and accepting various paid missions (ranging from transport, through escort, to bounty hunting), while fending off pirates... or join said pirates, scooping cargo from shot merchant ships, dodging Confederation and militia patrols. Merchant and mercenary guilds will accept you in their ranks for a price, offering lucrative assignments. You'll need that money to buy better ships, armament and equipment, as it's the only way to increase the chances of survival on your dangerous trips. What sets this game apart from its archetype (and even the Elite series) is the inclusion of ground travel and combat - you can walk around spaceports (or even on board of own ship), talk with shady types that frequent local cantinas, arm yourself with laser rifles or vibroblades, and eventually visit a doctor to heal wounds earned in the last bar brawl. Other new features include handy tools for tracking commodity price changes between planets. The game package contains documentation for writing custom quests, allowing its users to add subplots to the game (some were made available as extra downloads).

Ashes of Empire

Ashes of Empire

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1992

The Confederation of Syndicalist Republics is the setting for this strategy and combat game. Much like the similar looking USSR at the time, the society is crumbling, and you are an upstart aiming to take over power for yourself ….. erm, I mean, aiming to bring peace, harmony, prosperity and happiness. You start off in a small coastal province, and must progress by meeting people and negotiating to get them on your side – sometimes the sword is mightier than the pen, sometimes not. You must ensure that the more militant locals are pacified, and that ethnic minorities are looked after. While those sections are all strategic, there are also some vector-based combat sections. These ensure that brawns are required along with brains, and give the game some variety.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

Windows - Released - November 19, 2013

Abstergo Industries - modern-day front for the organization of the Templars - has opened an entertainment subsidiary in Montreal, Quebec, using advanced technology that allows reliving fragments from the lives of people from the past. The unnamed protagonist is hired by the company to connect to the life of Edward Kenway, a Welsh privateer living in the eighteenth century. Through a series of events Edward assumes the identity of a rogue member of the Assassins reporting to Laureano Torres, the Governor of Cuba and also the Grand Master of the Templars. Initially motivated by greed, Edward finds himself at odds with both the Templars and the Assassins, who are both pursuing a mysterious man known as the Sage in order to gain access to the secret technology of the First Civilization. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is the sixth major installment in the series. While it introduces a new historical protagonist, its modern-day story continues the overarching plot, particularly the arc that started in Assassin's Creed III. Most of the familiar elements from the previous installments return, including free-form movement, the possibility to climb on buildings, a mission-based system with main and secondary quests, weapon management, collecting, etc. Besides a few tweaks, combat system largely remains unchanged as well. The game's world is larger than in any of the previous games, and is available for exploration in a seamless fashion, without transitions or loading between ship navigation, swimming, and exploring the land. Much of the Caribbean Sea can be physically explored, including three full-fledged cities (Havana, Kingston, and Nassau) as well as smaller settlements and uninhabited islands. The protagonist can now hunt animals, fish, and uncover treasure maps. Early in the game Edward gains access to the Jackdaw, a ship that can be outfitted, upgraded, and used in naval battles. It is also possible to recruit crew members for the ship.

Assassin's Creed: Rogue

Assassin's Creed: Rogue

Windows - Released - March 10, 2015

Assassin's Creed: Rogue is the eighth main game in the historical series. It is the sequel to Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag from the year before. It also acts as a prequel to Assassin's Creed III and the game's final mission is a prologue to Assassin's Creed: Unity, which was released simultaneously. Most of the gameplay and design is similar to the sandbox environment of Black Flag as the game combines exploration on land with ship-based naval exploration and battles. The protagonist is Shay Patrick Cormac, an Assassin recruit with a rebellious streak. He eventually becomes disgruntled with the order's tactics and becomes involved with the Templars as a feared Assassin Hunter, making it the first title in the series to control a Templar throughout the larger portion of the game. Many characters from the aforementioned games return, including Adéwalé from Freedom Cry. The familiar modern day sequences also return, this time playing as a new employee at Abstergo Entertainment who needs to explore Cormac's memories during a server crash. The game is set in the 18th century during the French and Indian War. The game's main locations are New York, the River Valley and the North Atlantic Ocean. The ice in the latter environment introduces new game mechanics, such as frozen cargo, icebergs used as cover and an ice-breaker ram to open up passages. Swimming in icy water damages Cormac's health and there are no underwater missions like in Black Flag. His ship Morrigan is smaller and can be used to travel through rivers. There are also new weapons such as oil barrels that can be ignited. Puckle guns are introduced, ships can be rammed, and the Morrigan can be boarded by enemies during ship-to-ship combat. Sea shanties return, with a mix of old and new ones. On land typical missions return. New weapons are air rifles and grenade launchers. The fighting mechanics have been altered to allow countering based on timing, rather than keeping a button pressed. As many opponents are Assassins, they use familiar techniques against Cormac such as air attacks, hiding in bushes and blending in with crowds. Gas is a new type of weapon and Cormac can avoid this by pulling a mask over his face. New animals to hunt include narwhals and polar bears. Passive income can be earned by restoring buildings in the main three locales. Certain regions need to be freed by taking on gangs that control them. As with previous games there are many collectibles and side quests. There is no multiplayer mode.
