.hack//frägment

.hack//frägment

Sony Playstation 2 - Released - November 23, 2005

.hack//frägment is a multiplayer online game based on the fictional MMORPG, The World. It was released only in Japan on November 23, 2005 and online service ended on January 18, 2007, after being extended two months because of its popularity. Famitsu Weekly gave .hack//frägment a cumulative score of 29 out of 40 over four reviews, much like its reviews of the main series. Designer Hiroshi Matsuyama described the game as a way to see how players would react to online play. The game uses the same game engine as the .hack video game series and thus, its gameplay is identical, with the exception of online mode. Players explore areas and fight monsters in real time. A major difference is that during online play, the action does not pause when the menu is opened. Players may still use the skill "Data Drain" to weaken monsters and collect rare items. The user interface and control scheme are otherwise unchanged. Players may create their characters based on a number of preset body shapes and color schemes and may choose a class (such as Wavemaster or Twin Blade) and character name. In online mode, players may enter a lobby and search for a maximum of two other players to join them on an adventure. The game includes an expanded communication interface that allows players to chat, send e-mail, post to an in-game Bulletin Board System, and receive server news updates. It is possible to establish ad-hoc chat rooms separate from the public-access ones. Guilds are permanent, exclusive chat rooms for members. In offline mode, players may level up, obtain items, and learn new skills as one of their online mode characters without the need for an Internet connection. Players may invite characters from the .hack games, .hack//Sign, and .hack//Legend of the Twilight into their party. The "story mode" of .hack//frägment is identical to that of the .hack games, with the player's created character replacing Kite. While offline, players may use a PC utility called "HackServer" to create areas and dungeons and release them online. The creators of the most popular areas are given the ability to add strong monsters for players to defeat.

.hack//Mutation: Part 2

.hack//Mutation: Part 2

Sony Playstation 2 - Released - May 6, 2003

.hack//Mutation is the second in a four part game series. It's a single player adventure / rpg that "simulates" an MMORPG (EverQuest, Ultima On-line) that has you playing the character Kite. You can get member addresses of other character and attempt to call them to in game to see if they are on-line to join you in a quest. Like standard MMORPG games, it has a LOT of side quests, lots of weapons and armor, a trading system for equipment among other character and the ability to move between different servers. You also have message boards and e-mail to communicate with other "players". This version improves the original by better AI control of other character's, additional items, more characters, access to more servers / areas, and a lot more.

Apart from solving puzzles, the player has to make it through some arcade sequences: escape the labyrinth, dive with limited breath, and dodge the evil guy's minions.

007: James Bond: The Stealth Affair

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1990

Operation Stealth, also known as James Bond 007: The Stealth Affair in the United States, is an adventure game from Delphine Software International, released in 1990. The game is mainly the work of Paul Cuisset (programming) and Jean Baudlot (sound). The game was released with the Bond license in the United States, although this led to some inconsistencies as the MI6 agent appeared to be taking his orders from the CIA. Operation Stealth mainly features a point-and-click style of gameplay reminiscent of many of the LucasArts adventures of the time, as well as a number of more action-oriented elements including an overhead viewed maze section and a scene in which Glames/Bond attempts to escape from an underwater cavern before he runs out of oxygen. The cracked Amiga version of the game featured a primitive synthesized voice that would perform all the dialogue in the game if 1MB or more RAM was installed. Unfortunately the crack featured a bug which meant that if the player attempted to click the mouse button in order to skip through the speech faster the game would freeze and have to be rebooted. For this reason many seasoned players would actually remove the memory expansion before playing the game for any extended period of time.

10 Computer Hits

10 Computer Hits

Amstrad CPC - Released - 1985

10 Computer Hits is the first in what would prove to be a lucrative series of compilations for Beau Jolly. Although published on all of the main 8-bit formats of the time, the content of the compilations varied from machine to machine by virtue of Beau Jolly's policy of picking up cheap licences from publishers who generally didn't have enough material (or funds) of their own to publish a compilation of their own. The compilation was also notable for being one of the first to be advertised on British televison. Games included were: * Chuckie Egg (A 'n' F) * Pinball Wizard (CP Software) * Killer Gorilla (Micropower) * Heroes of Karn (Interceptor) * Special Operations (Lothlorien) * Flight Path 737 (Anirog) * Ghouls (Micropower) * Defend or Die (Alligata) * The Covenant (PSS) * Jack and the Beanstalk (Thor) While most of these were older titles when the compilation was released, The Covenant was still viewed as fairly new (having been released only two months earlier).

10 Computer Hits 2

10 Computer Hits 2

Amstrad CPC - Released - 1986

10 Computer Hits 2 is the second in the Computer Hits series of compilations and once again sees Beau Jolly scooping up the licence for a number of games from different software houses and publishing as a single collection. Games included were: * 3D Starstrike (Realtime Games) * Super Pipeline II (Taskset) * Technician Ted (Hewson) * Android 2 (Vortex) * Mutant Monty (Artic) * Codename Mat (Micromega) * Moon Buggy (Anirog) * World Cup (Artic) * Gauntlet (Micropower) * Fantasia Diamond (Hewson)

10 Computer Hits 3

Amstrad CPC - Released - 1987

10 Computer Hits 3 is the third installment in the popular line of Computer Hits compilations. Settling into a familiar pattern, Beau Jolly have published a range of games from different software houses across different genres. Games included were: * Herbert's Dummy Run (Mikro-Gen) * Hi-Rise (Bubble Bus) * On the Run (Design Design) * The Devil's Crown (Probe) * Wriggler (Romantic Robot) * Dynamite Dan (Mirrorsoft) * Elidon (Orpheus) * Juggernaut (CRL) * Geoff Capes Strongman (Martech) * Cauldron (Palace)

10 Computer Hits 4

10 Computer Hits 4

Amstrad CPC - Released - 1988

The 10 Computer Hits series rolls on with this, its penultimate release. By this point a number of software houses were releasing their own back catalogue collections making it harder for Beau Jolly to scoop up cheap licences to repackage the games in these packs. With the market becoming more crowded, Beau Jolly felt the need to increase the number of games available on the packs but rather than dilute their brand, they offered two 'free' games, increasing the overall number of titles to 12 for this edition. Games included were: * Bride of Frankenstein (39 Steps) * Spindizzy (Electric Dreams) * Pulsator (Martech) * Sacred Armour of Antiriad (Palace) * Revolution (Vortex) * Triaxos (39 Steps) * Deactivators (Reaktor) * Uchi Mata (Martech) * City Slicker (Hewson) * Starquake (Bubble Bus) * Elektra Glide (English Software) * Dandy (Electric Dreams)

Amstrad CPC - Released - 1989

The final installment in the 10 Computer Hits series of compilations saw Beau Jolly attempt a rebrand with a completely different set of packaging but the same philosophy of repackaging games from other software houses in a single collection - the variety of publishers, however, was much less than it had been in previous editions. Games included were: * Dark Sceptre (Firebird) * Tarzan (Martech) * Catch 23 (Martech) * Mystery of the Nile (Firebird) * Endurance (CRL) * Mega-Apocalypse (Martech) * Ninja Hamster (CRL) * Activator (Cascade) * The Boggit (CRL) * Enlightenment: Druid II (Firebird)

The story of the writer Mike Williams, a specialist in paranormal phenomena, he is sent to the dead city of Centralia to search for inspiration, to finish writing your book on the paranormal. Mike Williams, trying to write a book, being an expert on the paranormal, he himself does not believe in the existence of ghosts, considers this type of activity to be his usual income and nothing else. Another meaningless day Mike began with an Internet browsing, he read about various strange places, in search of inspiration and materials, stumbled upon an article about the dead city of Centralia, he decides to go to this city, as the city bustle did not allow him to finish the book. The whole story begins in Centralia, Pennsylvania. In the middle of the XIX century, here, in the eastern part of the Allegheny Mountains, quite rich reserves of coal were discovered. Its industrial development in Centrailia more or less successfully lasted for about a century and, probably, would have gone so far, if not for the confluence of circumstances, multiplied by human negligence. By the early 1960s, local residents turned the unused pit of one of the surrounding mines into an ordinary city dump. The volunteers who arrived to clean it up in May 1962 did not find anything better than just burning it — a practice that they had once used in Centrelia. A simple operation to arson the garbage was successfully carried out, but with its subsequent extinguishing the situation was more complicated. From the landfill, the fire spread to the coal deposits that remained in the mine, which, as coal is supposed to, began to burn quite successfully, and the fire was constantly spreading through the territory of the already inactive mine workings. Some time after the incident, the state finally paid attention to the scale of the problem and allocated funds for its solution. By this time, the fire had spread so much under Centreilia that the only way out was the complete resettlement of this small town, where about 1 thousand people lived. You will find several endings of the game, and the atmospheric terrible horror. I did not believe in the existence of a poltergeist until today! I really hope that I will see the dawn. P.S Mike. • Atmosphere of horror • Beautiful soundtrack • Modern graphics • Multiple game endings • Puzzle

20000 Leagues Under the Sea

20000 Leagues Under the Sea

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1988

The game is based on an 1870 novel by Jules Verne. On July 5th, 1867 the government decided to launch the famous ship the "Abraham Lincoln", which will leave on the trail of a sea monster. The great French professor Mr. Arronax will also take part in the expedition. The weeks passed without any sign of the monster's presence in the area, when, one day, 300 miles from the shores of Queen Charlotte's Island... three members of the expedition set out on board the Nautilus, a submarine navigated by Captain Nemo. The player takes Anorax's role to find out more. Most of the game is spent on the Nautilus, which consists of three rooms: the living room, the control room and the library. There the player can manipulate objects and talk to people to receive hints what to do next and the state of the Nautilus. With the map, he influences the route. Sometimes the player leaves the submarine to explore other locations, and respectively solves puzzles to receive more hints or to solve action sequences, e.g., fighting against a shark. The game is played in real-time, which means the key to success is being in the right location at the right time. This also results in various possibilities to render the game unwinnable, and causes waiting times. For the same reason, the player also needs to watch Nemo's mood. If he angers Nemo, e.g., by manipulating the ship instruments, he locks the player into his room and valuable time passes. The game is played completely in point & click and has no function to save progress.

2010: The Text Adventure Game

Coleco ADAM - Released - 1985

2010: The Text Adventure Game is the second game based on the 1984 science fiction film 2010: The Year We Make Contact after the console game 2010: The Graphic Action Game. The player takes the role of a major in the United States Space Corps, a member of the expedition sent to investigate the fate of the Discovery space ship. The problem is that Discovery is close to crashing into Jupiter's moon Io and the player has to travel to it in a Russian exploration vessel called the Leonov. The task up ahead is to board the Discovery and repair it before the gravitational forces of Io pull it away. Unlike most text adventure games, 2010 is not controlled by typing in verb-noun commands. Instead the player uses the keyboard's six function keys (or smart keys as they are called on the Adam) to interact with the world. The commands that are shown are context sensitive and depend on the situation, where the player is and what previous actions have been made. Moving around is done by the directional key, and by pressing return the examine menu appears. It consists of four options; to examine the area, its equipment, its items and any pods that are present. By pressing the home key the player is able to camp. Camping allows the player to organize items (picking up, dropping, examining them etc.), check life support (status of food, water, rest, power and medical supplies), recharging power and supplies, performing medical treatment and removing the spacesuit. By successfully performing various activities the player earns points. The current score is shown every time the player ends camping.
