1830: Railroads and Robber Barons

1830: Railroads and Robber Barons

MS-DOS - Released - 1995

Based on Avalon Hill's board game of the same name, 1830 is a railroad empire building game that is along the same lines (although a different style of gameplay) as the much more famous Railroad Tycoon. Capturing the very look and feel of the board game, all the way to the hexagonal playing field and track tokens, 1830 is a turn based game that emphasizes the successful running of a company and manipulating the stock market rather than managing a railroad. Tracks can be laid, cities connected, trains purchased, and schedules set, but the ultimate goal in the end is making money, even at the cost of your company; you'll wind up buying and selling a number of them during the course of the game anyway.

1999: Hore, Mita koto ka! Seikimatsu

1999: Hore, Mita koto ka! Seikimatsu

Nintendo Entertainment System - Released - September 18, 1992

Four Japanese high-school students were camping at the countryside, when they suddenly saw an UFO landing nearby. Before they managed to understand anything, a small pink alien with a strict-looking face came out of the space ship and announced that the end of the century is near - and something extraordinary will happen in the year 1999. That's where the game begins. You can play as one (or two, in 2-player mode) of the students, competing against the others. You must prepare for the upcoming end of the century, earn enough money, and generally manage your life well. This is a Monopoly-like board game, only instead of dices you use cards. The characters are represented by small cars on a city map. The number that appears on the card you pull from the deck represents the amount of squares your car can move on the map. Each square leads to a different event: accident, romantic meeting, promotion, etc. Some of the events allow you to make an additional choice. For example, if you land in a casino, you'll be asked if you want to gamble. Answering "yes" will lead to a slot machine mini-game.

2 Games in 1: Sonic Battle + ChuChu Rocket!

2 Games in 1: Sonic Battle + ChuChu Rocket!

Nintendo Game Boy Advance - Released - November 16, 2005

Sonic Battle is a fast paced pseudo-fighting game, akin to Super Smash Brothers from Nintendo. Rather than being 3D side-scrolling, this game employs a 3D isometric view- not a static, sprite-based field though, it is comprised of actual texture-mapped polygons. The character sprites are 2D though, and while you think it wouldn't work- it does :P You can have 9 characters to choose from, 5 modes of play; Story, Battle, Challenge, Training, and Mini Games; you can link up 4 GBA's to fight your friends, each character has a bunch of moves you can use to beat the you-know-what out of whoever you're fighting. It has a system of selecting Aerial, Ground, and Guard based attacks, and depending on what type of attack you set for which area (aerial/ground/guard), you have a possibility of 9 total different special attacks to choose from (only 3 at a time in a match though) which you can change each time you lose 1 stock point. ChuChu Rocket is an action puzzler, designed predominantly as a multi-player game. You have indirect control over mice, and must guide them to the safety of a rocket, and away from a cat. You do this by placing arrows on the ground, which they will follow. The multi-player game is a frantic all-against-all duel, in which each player's mice will only follow instructions of their own colour. You can play this mode on your own against CPU opponents, or take on a series of predefined puzzles

20 Squares

Windows - Released - August 1, 1995

20 Squares is a shareware computer conversion of an Ancient Egyptian board game, probably dating back even before the pyramids. The prosaic name of the game, stemming for its 20 square board, is due to the fact that no name has survived on papyrus. The rules can also only be guessed, but the game is probably very similar to Senet, another Egyptian board game with 30 squares instead of twenty, and it seems to have come from a Sumerian board game . The game is a simple "race and bump" game. You race down the board with your five tokens, trying to get them home before your opponent does. You can bump your opponents back to the beginning, and the board also contains some special squares which give you an extra turn. As dice were unknown back then, the Egyptians (and the game) used "casting sticks" -- the halves of a twig cut in two, with one flat and one rounded side. Throwing four of these sticks together results in up to four flat sides up, which is the number of squares you can move. Zero flat sides up count as a six, giving you another turn, as when you throw four flat sides. 20 Squares game comes with a tutorial, explaining the (simple) rules in quite length, and features so-called "Mummy Facts" during the game -- interesting bits of information about Ancient Egypt. 20 Squares is a shareware computer conversion of an Ancient Egyptian board game, probably dating back even before the pyramids. 3~D Voice Chess

Amstrad CPC - Released - 1985

3-D Voice Chess is a version of the strategic board game that sees two players battle to take control of the other player's king. The chess pieces are divided into two different colored sets: white and black. The players of the sets are referred to as White and Black, respectively. Each set consists of sixteen pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns. Each type of piece can move differently and understanding the differences are key to overcoming your opponent. 3-D Voice Chess sees a single player take on a computerised opponent and gives you the choice of playing as white or black. The computer has seven skill levels which will impact on the response times. Skill levels range from "Beginner" to "Correspondance" with an average response time of 8 seconds stretching to 24 hours at the maximum skill level. Not surprisingly, there's also a save function so you can keep your games ongoing As the name suggests, you also have the option of having speech output so if you have a compatible peripheral attached (or emulated!) the computer will read back the moves as they are made.

Sinclair ZX Spectrum - Released - 1983

This is a modified version of the old Psion Chess program - I got bored with the "newspaper" style 2D representation, and wrote a snazzy (well, I thought so) 3D perspective graphics routine and bolted it onto the Psion program, removing the old display routine in the process. It still plays exactly the same game of chess as the original, however. About two weeks after I'd finished this, The Edge release "Psi-Chess", which was faster and smarter than Psion chess, and had a snazzy 3D interface. Bastards....... Bill Bennett

Players take turns placing their markers in blank cells in the array. The first player to achieve four of their own markers in a row wins. The winning row can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal on a single board as in regular tic-tac-toe, or vertically in a column, or a diagonal line through four boards.

3-D Tic-Tac-Toe

Atari 2600 - Released - June 1, 1980

The game is similar to the traditional game of tic-tac-toe, but is played on four 4×4 grids stacked vertically; it is basically a computerized version of the board game Qubic using traditional tic-tac-toe notation and layout. To win, a player must place four of their symbols on four squares that line up vertically, horizontally, or diagonally, on a single grid, or spaced evenly over all four grids. This creates a total of 76 possible ways to win, in comparison to eight possible ways to win on a standard 3×3 board. The game has nine variations: it can be played by two players against each other, or one player can play against a built-in AI on one of eight different difficulty settings. The game uses the standard joystick controller.

3D Tic-Tac-Toe (COMPUTE! Publications, Inc.)

Commodore 64 - Released - 1984

Published in COMPUTE!'s Gazette 1984/06 (Issue #12), as well in Keypunch's Strategy Games, and in Europe by Wicked Software in the Big 100 Collection. Sound, color, and a three-dimensional playing board add new excitement to this old familiar game. After the title screen is displayed, both players enter their names and how many games they want to play. A multicolored three-dimensional tic-tac-toe board then appears on the screen. The player with the joystick in port 1 goes first. To move the cursor, in the top left corner of the board, push the joystick left or right. When you get to the desired location, push the fire button and your marker will appear under the cursor. If there is already a marker in the space, a low noise will be heard, and you will have to go elsewhere. Winning Combinations: To win, you must get three of your markers in a straight line before your opponent does. They can be on one of the boards, or a combination of the three boards going diagonally or up and down. When you get a tic-tac-toe, your three pieces flash different colors and the winning sound is heard. The board is then cleared, and, if you specified more than one round in the beginning, you play again. If not, the score is displayed and the game is over.

3-in-1 2p Pak

Nintendo Entertainment System - Homebrew - August 21, 2016

Do you like tic-tac-toe? Do you like the pegboard game? Do you like !CLIK!? What if they were also two-player competitive on the NES? Well then this game's for you! Compete against a friend, or play witchoself (get those tissues, though)! There are 3 different 2-player games, along with a bonus 2-player game that you can unlock after beating all the games as 1-player. If you look around, you might also find ANOTHER 2-player only game that is hidden within! The entire reason I started programming this game was to try and kind of vindicate myself in some way. I had already done some other games that were bigger in scope than the games of Tic-Tac XO, Pegs and !CLIK!, but didn't like how I had coded them due to being newer using 6502 at the time. All you have to do is look at the sources for those games to understand what I'm talking about! So, I went about putting the basic elements of those games into one cart, but just more standard (for instance, just regular Tic-Tac-Toe), and for 1 or 2 players. With that said, there is some sort of glitching that happens to the PPU during Tic-Tac-Toe that I could never track down, but ah well. It was a neat project. Snail Trail, one of the bonus games, was an idea for a parody of the Tron cycles game. Originally I was going to have the snails move UUUUU-BER slow. I think it turned out better having them move at the speed they are, though.

5-in-1 Arcade Hits

Sony PSP Minis - Released - July 6, 2010

5-in-1 Arcade Hits is a "PlayStation Minis" bundle of five separate games in a single downloadable package. Despite the title, most of the games have little or nothing to do with any traditional arcade-style games. The five included games are: Pairs: A simple memory game where players must match sixteen pairs of cards. There are three skill levels to choose from. At the easiest level, the cards show pictures of simple objects. At the medium level, the cards show numbers. At the highest difficulty level, the cards show complex symbols. Players are also timed and high scores are awarded for uncovering multiple pairs in a row. 15Puzzle: The classic 4x4 "sliding tile" puzzle. There are three levels of difficulty. Choosing the easiest setting assigns a number to each sliding tile and requires players to correctly organize the numbers. The medium and high settings require players to properly arrange a picture. Each session is timed, and the players' best times are saved on a high score table. Pool: An eight-ball pool game for one or two players. Bonus points are awarded for sinking multiple balls in one shot and for "chains" (pocketing at least one ball in consecutive turns). Solitaire: A standard Klondike Solitaire game with two modes of difficulty. The "easy" variant allows players to draw one card from the pile each turn while the "hard" variant requires players to draw three cards from the pile each turn. Additional points are awarded if the player is able to complete the game in a specified time limit. Tetroid: Of all the games included in the compilation, this is the one that most resembles something one might find in an arcade. Tetroid plays like Arkanoid flipped on its side. However, along with having to break the bricks, the play field slowly and continuously shifts toward the paddle as the game progresses. The game ends when a row containing one or more bricks meets the paddle. All games have their own high score tables. If desired, a unique string can be generated for the player that will allow them to import their high scores onto a global leaderboard when entered on the developers' website.
