A Tale of Vengeance

A Tale of Vengeance

OpenBOR - Homebrew - April 25, 2012

One of the best OpenBOR games around, very fun and very complete feel. There are 10 levels, 13 boss battles, great soundtrack, and even 3 secret characters! What a great story from the OpenBoR community! Under the sharp and challenging title "A Tale of Vengeance" is a great beat 'em up game. This is not a remake, but a completely new game with a remixed desktop. Here, the characters of SNK and Capcom meet together in a team. The demon Shin has mastered almost all the warriors of the three sagas. This is the strongest form of Akuma, which has now taken over the human world. This creates a common story in which even the great Geese, the unlimited M. Bison, and the mystical Mr. Q are part of Demon Sheen's army. However, several fighters, gathered in a group, set off. Ryo characters from Street Fighter, Samurai Maru, Kyo, Terry Bogard and Kim embark on a long journey through the depths of the Shin-controlled vacuum to drive him out of the human world. Well, the game is quite interesting, although its dynamics can be difficult for anyone to master. Crowded with powerful fighters who are also quite fierce. Your characters, on the other hand, are quite slow and some of their tricks make them too vulnerable. But these are almost two hours of intense play, where your gaming skills will be put to the test.

Abobo's Big Adventure

Web Browser - Released - January 11, 2012

Abobo's Big Adventure is a parody tribute to well-known and loved games of the NES era. Players control Abobo, an enemy from the Double Dragon games. After Abobo's son Aboboy gets kidnapped Double Dragon-style, he has to battle through a number of levels inspired by NES games. The player will need to adapt to the change of rules in each level: from beat-'em-up to shoot-'em-up (or, for the lack of a better term, avoid-'em-up), from overhead adventure to face-to-face brawl and so on. The game introduces characters, level themes, sprites and SFX from many NES games including Double Dragon, Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Kung Fu, Radical Ninja, Jaws, Donkey Kong, Dig Dug, Balloon Fight, Castlevania, Megaman, Darkwing Duck, Dr. Mario, Blaster Master, Contra, TMNT, Kirby's Adventure, Ninja Gaiden, Punch-Out and others. While the rules of the game change with every level, one feature stays the same: for successful disposal of a number of enemies in a row, Abobo will increase his Rage meter. When the meter fills up, Abobo will unleash his ultimate attack, which is unique for each level.

Action Doom 2: Urban Brawl

Action Doom 2: Urban Brawl

Windows - Released - August 22, 2008

Urban Brawl: Action DooM 2 is a prequel to Action Doom, originally a total conversion, and it takes place ten years before the events of the first game. Urban Brawl can be played both as a .wad file or stand-alone and it is based on the Windows ZDoom port of the original DOOM source code. Unlike the first game this title is entirely done in cel shaded graphics. The original game aimed to bring a Contra-style gameplay to a first-person shooter, by only offering ranged weapons. Urban Brawl is exactly the opposite as it centers around melee combat with fists, bats, shurikens, bottles, baseball bats, a taser, a chainsaw or a katana to take on enemies. Especially the brawler Final Fight has heavily inspired the game design. There is also a number of ranged weapons available, but with limited ammo. For almost all weapons there is a basic and an advanced attack. Weapons wear out or can be dropped at any time to exchange them for a new one. Health is replenished through junk food. Health bars for both the player and the enemies are shown near the top of the screen. The game tells the gritty story of a man whose daughter is kidnapped for reasons not disclosed to him. In between missions the events are further explained through stylish black and white cut-scenes similar to the Sin City art, with a voice-over for the narrator. The story takes the protagonist through urban locales such as gang-infested city, the metro, woods, fields an eventually the building of the organization behind the kidnapping. The graphics as well as the enemies are colorful, the environment is highly interactive and there are many secrets and Easter eggs hidden in the game. Based on certain decisions, two possible endings are available. The game is available for free, but for $9.99 a physical copy can be purchased directly from the developer. It comes on a disc inside a collectible case and box art, and it contains bonus maps and challenges, a bonus song and the original Action Doom.

AdventNEON

AdventNEON

Windows - Released - August 29, 2019

Hyperactive 2D action platformer made by just me! Punch robot cops while double-dashing and comboing them at lightspeed. When you think they've got the drop on you? Dash through them to freeze time, run circles around them, and wind up a satisfying counterattack! Once you hit 100% of your power, transform and show everyone how unstoppable you truly are! AdventNEON's got a focus on vibrancy, responsiveness and freedom. You've got simple, tight (and remappable!) inputs, fluid and versatile movement options and extremely fast combat to allow you to jump around and beat down however the heck you want. My goal is for the game itself to be so fun that you'd be willing to open it up just to screw around in the hub world. I.e. the game I'd want to play when other games just aren't cutting it for me at the time. It takes a ton of inspirations from all the games and characters I enjoyed growing up, so you might notice some of that here! You're put into the shoes of Neon, a special android with the ability to harness Resonance energy and rapidly scale in power. The harder the beatdown Neon dishes out, the stronger they become, until they're a nigh unstoppable snowball of devastation. The catch? Neon can't maintain this power when getting hit, nor can they take a lot of hits in general. Neon is incredibly fast and powerful, but can only maintain that extreme potential when they're avoiding damage and continuously dishing it out. If you can fully maintain the flow of Resonance though, you'll transform, and be able to let loose 100% of your power! Become faster, stronger, brighter, meaner and greener as everything in your path struggles to keep pace with you in this form. Like Celeste? You can use its dash twice! Go nuts. Avoid everything. Counterattack through your enemies. Heck, wavedash jump cancel™ if you want. Enjoy platform fighters? Neon's got a fully fleshed out directional moveset, along with the ability to send enemies offscreen to KO them with a satisfying explosion! Combat lets you cancel virtually everything into everything else! Make your own combos! Hit, stun and run! Start up that combo with a dash! Unleash a barrage of punches and stop time like it's a [redacted] reference! Fake out enemies with repeated dashes! Teleport behind the enemy and end them with a powerful Break attack! You don't need to remember any optimal combo routes or buttons; just hit and don't get hit and you'll win regardless of your playstyle! DEFAULT CONTROLS/SETTINGS Remap them in the options menu. [Action]: [Keyboard input] -- [Gamepad input] Move: WSAD/Arrows -- Left Stick/D-Pad Jump: Space/C -- Bottom Face/Left Bumper Punch: P/Z -- Left Face/Right Face + Direction Dash: O/X -- Top Face/Right Bumper + Direction Break Attack: Hold Dash + Press Punch + Direction (Can also be done with the Right Stick on Gamepad.) "Tap up to Jump" can be set. Gamepad Stick Deadzone can be set between 10% and 85% of the gate radius. To ensure your gamepad controls are working, you can open a Visualizer for your inputs by going to Options - Video - Display Inputs. These show the real time inputs from your controller regardless of what's happening in the game.

Aeon Flux

Aeon Flux

Sony Playstation 2 - Released - November 15, 2005

Aeon Flux is a 3rd person action game inspired by the 2005 movie of the same name. The story takes place 400 years in the future after the majority of Earth's population has been wiped out by industrial disease. Only one city, Bregna, remains. The city is run by the group of scientists who had discovered the vaccine to prevent the disease, but a group of rebels known as the Monicans oppose their rule. You control the main character of the story, Aeon Flux. Aeon is a skilled fighter, and can perform light and heavy strikes, combo attacks, and a variety of acrobatic attacks. When an enemy has only a small amount of health left, you also have the ability to perform a takedown attack; when successful this will award you a bonus, such as extra health. Aeon has a health meter and a style meter; when the health meter is depleted, the game is over. The style meter is filled by attacking or killing enemies; when you have earned enough style, you can charge up your combo attacks for extra damage.

Afro Samurai

Sony Playstation 3 - Released - January 27, 2009

Revenge. That's all that the man named Afro knows. His father was murdered when he was just a small child, killed by a man seeking the power of The Number One, a headband said to bestow the power of a god. Only he who carries The Number Two has the right to challenge The Number One, and to avenge his father, Afro has dedicated his life to becoming The Number Two and killing the man who wears The Number One. Afro Samurai is a third-person action game based on the anime created by Takashi Okazaki and Gonzo and starring Samuel L. Jackson. Each stage chronicles an important event in Afro's quest for revenge, culminating in a boss fight at the end. The defining feature of the combat is Afro's ability to enter "focus mode," where the screen goes black-and-white and the action slows down, allowing for a "perfect slice" attack which can slice enemies literally to pieces. It must be charged after use, with the charge represented by a pendant hanging from Afro's sword. As Afro kills enemies, he levels up earning new skills and increasing his power and stamina. Collecting "mementos" strewn around each stage will also unlock special abilities called "father's legacy", which are often extra-devastating moves that can easily take down even stronger enemies.

Amstrad CPC - Released - September 1, 1989

After The War is a video game in which the player controls a character through a post-apocalyptic city, probably after a nuclear war. Released and unreleased artworks by Luis Royo and Alfonso Azpiri reveals that the city should be a post-nuclear version of New York City. The game was published in 1989 by Dinamic Software, and consisted of two separate parts; the second half of the game was made accessible by successfully completing part one, whereupon the player is given a password (94656981). Character movements were slightly different in both parts: common movements where to move left and right, to jump and to duck. While in first part the only way of fighting is using fists and legs, second part gives the character the ability of using some kind of futuristic gun. Both loads featured some parts with two levels.

Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed

Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed

Sony Playstation 3 - Released - November 7, 2013

Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed is a 3D fighting brawler set in a modern day version of Japan's Akihabara district in Tokyo. It is the sequel to the 2011 PSP game Akiba's Trip. The protagonist is called Nanashi or 'Nameless', but this can be changed before starting the game. He is an otaku-type high school student who is on his way to a job interview. He does not remember what happens next, but he ends up strapped on an operating table where he is told that just like many others he has signed a contract with the Magaimono organization. This contract allowed them to turn him into a synthister, a vampire-like superhuman that feeds off other people's life energy. He needs to absorb the energy for Magaimono, but he is quickly rescued by a girl called Shizuku Tokikaze. She is a friendly synthister and her blood allows the protagonist to withstand his task and defend Akihabara instead. He becomes a hunter to defeat the synthisters who prey on regular humans. Along with a band of freedom fighters Nanashi gets to roam the streets of Akihabara with over 100 shops modeled after the real life ones. Fights are done with brawling beat 'em up gameplay against one or more opponents in a small environment. Just like the protagonist himself the synthisters are sensitive to sunlight, so he needs to weaken the durability of their clothing with attacks until a part starts to blink and then there is an opportunity to tear off one or multiple parts of their clothing through a stripping mechanic, exposing them to sunlight which kills them. When multiple parts blink it is possible to perform chain strips. Rather than being a hentai title, the game presents the undressing in a quirky manner and does not contain full nudity. In the fighting system it is possible to attack using multiple stances and perform duo attacks with allies. Attacks are based on targeting the head and the upper and lower body. They can be strung together to form combos and there are many types of weapons, that can be upgraded multiple times, each with their own attacks, strengths and weaknesses. The character is also able to jump, avoid incoming attacks and counter blocks with special moves that break them. Next to the fights a large amount of time is spent exploring the environment and completing missions to earn money. There are also many NPCs to talk to. Conversations often have dialogue trees and the answers not only affect the fights with synthisters, but also the relationships with the male and female cast of characters who can join or leave the protagonist's, with the option to pursue one of four love interests with their own endgame. A lot of communication is accessible through a smartphone, for instance to receive e-mails, check the Pitter social network, access the map or use the camera to take shots. Because of the large environment it is possible to fast travel between locations. The game contains many shops where items, weapons, clothing and food can be bought and sold. The character's main characteristics are based around an attack and defense rating, as well as a large amount of customization for weapons and different types of clothing items that influence his head and upper and lower body durability during fights.

Alice: Madness Returns

Alice: Madness Returns

Sony Playstation 3 - Released - June 14, 2011

The events of Alice: Madness Returns begin where the previous game American McGee's Alice left off: desperately struggling with her own mind, Alice is now in an establishment for children with psychological problems, and memories of her whole family dying in the fire haunt her. Now another threat - which appears as a giant train - seeks to destroy her Wonderland. Alice will battle through stages to stop the train and find out its true meaning. There are five large chapters in Wonderland, each with different themes and different types of enemies. The gameplay can be described as 50% platform-jumping and 50% hack-and-slash combat. Unlike the previous game, the emphasis is on fighting with melee weapons, although there are also means (and necessity) to shoot enemies. Melee attacks are strung together with a vorpal blade (quick attacks) or a toy horse (slower, but more powerful and able to break through enemy defenses), and a pepper grinder or tea cannon is used for ranged attacks. The grinder has a cooldown time and can also be used to activate switches from a distance. Alice has a timed bomb as well and can dodge incoming attacks by briefly turning into a cloud of butterflies. A focus mode can be triggered to keep a specific enemy in view and in this mode Alice can deploy an umbrella to reflect incoming projectiles. When she is low on health, a monochrome hysteria mode can be triggered where much more damage is dealt and Alice can harvest enemies for health instead of teeth, the main currency left behind by enemies. For the many platform sections, she can triple jump in the air and glide down. During her travels, Alice will visit both XIXth century London and imaginary worlds. One of the novelties of the game is Alice's ability to shrink herself anytime, allowing her to enter small pathways and detect otherwise virtually invisible platforms and objects. It is also used to receive clues about the next goal. From time to time, players need to complete various mini-games, such as a 2D side-scrolling platformer, a rolling ball game in both 2D and 3D, and side-scrolling levels with a submarine. Some characters from the previous game make their appearance here, and the game also introduces several new creatures from Lewis Carroll's novels. It is a single-player game only. Alice's weapons are upgradable three times with new abilities and stronger attacks, by using teeth that she collects on her journey. A total number of roses that stand for Alice's health bar can also be increased by finding and completing special challenges called 'radula rooms' and by solving Cheshire Cat's riddles. There are a lot of hidden objects to find, such as various memories and bottles; collecting them will unlock certain galleries in the game's menu. A New Game+ option with increased difficulty is available once the game is completed.

Alice: Madness Returns

Alice: Madness Returns

Windows - Released - June 14, 2011

Alice Liddell, believing herself responsible for a fire that consumed her home and her family, escapes into a twisted version of Wonderland. While held at Rutledge Asylum for treatment, Alice was able to conquer her doubts, and eventually was released from the ward. Madness Returns takes place in 1875, a year after Alice's release. Alice, now 19 years old, resides at an orphanage in Victorian London, under the care of Dr. Angus Bumby, a psychiatrist who uses hypnosis to help his child patients forget their memories. Though she believes that she is fine, Alice still suffers from hallucinations of Wonderland. Within the corrupted Wonderland, Alice attempts to learn more from Wonderland's various citizens, including the Duchess, the Mad Hatter, the Mock Turtle, the Walrus and the Carpenter, and the Caterpillar. She is ultimately told that the Queen of Hearts still lives despite her defeat at Alice's hands before, though in a diminished capacity. At the Queen's castle, Alice discovers the Queen's true form, which resembles her younger self. The Queen reveals that an entity called the Dollmaker has taken over the Infernal Train and is corrupting Wonderland.

Now he's back with Alice: Madness Returns – download the Complete Collection to your PC and return to his twisted vision of Wonderland. After losing everything in a house fire, going insane, living in a mental institution, and exploring a disturbing version of Wonderland, you’d think that McGee would be done torturing poor Alice. Well, think again. After 10 years, Alice may be ready to leave the institute and start over, but McGee has other plans for our heroine. Alien Storm

Alien Storm

Sinclair ZX Spectrum - Released - 1991

The aliens are invading Earth, and it's up to the "Alien Busters" to wipe them out and destroy their creator. The Busters consist of Karla, Gordon, and Scooter. Each one of them have their own weapons and special attacks. When you start the game, you can select any one of these characters to play as. There are six missions to complete (eight in the Genesis version) with several stages, and each mission has you blasting aliens all the way to the end, from the streets to the mother ship where you'll meet the mother of all aliens. Unfortunately, blasting these aliens will not be an easy task, as they get tougher in every mission, and are capable of hiding into objects such as plants, postboxes, trashcans, drums, and several others. Each mission has an objective such as rescuing people destroying an UFO. When you deal with a few aliens, flying heads will appear, which you can shoot to collect life or energy (by the way, life is important to you, since if yours get empty, you're dead). However, rather than using your ordinary weapons, you can use the special attacks that are enough to kill aliens you currently see. These types of attack vary depending on the character you choose at the start of the game. For instance, Gordon summons a U.S. Air Force Jet that drop bombs across the street, while Scooter is able to teleport out of his present location, and leave a series of bombs that will blow up aliens on sight, he will then re-appear. However, using your character's special attack uses up a lot of energy, and if you have little or no energy, you can't use it. At the end of some missions is an alien boss, which you must destroy in order to complete the mission. Also, at the end of every one, you have to enter buildings where you participate in a shooting gallery. The object is to kill aliens popping up from several locations with the building. You can play Alien Storm by yourself, or with another person.

Sega System 16 - Released - 1990

Alien Storm (エイリアンストーム) is a 1990 beat 'em up/shooter arcade game by Sega. It was later ported to the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis and Sega Master System. The Sega Mega Drive version was also released on Wii's Virtual Console in 2007. The game appeared in Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Alien Storm

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1990

Alien Storm (エイリアンストーム) is a beat 'em up shooter released as an arcade video game by Sega in 1990. The game was also re-released on the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack in 2022. Plot A homicidal alien race is invading Earth, and the only thing that stands between them and world domination are a special forces team known as the "Alien Busters", composed of Karen (absent in the Master System version, named "Karla" in some versions), Garth (named "Gordon" in some versions) and Scooter (the robot, named "Slammer" in Master System and PAL versions). Gameplay Alien Storm is a side-scrolling beat 'em up. The game resembles Golden Axe, with a similar artistic style, three playable characters (a man, a woman, and a novelty character) and pick-up or power-up special attacks. The player (one player only on the Master System version, up to two players on the Mega Drive version, three on the arcade version) selects from the three different characters to embark upon a quest to save the Earth from an alien invasion. All of the Busters are playable from the beginning of the game. There are six missions to complete (eight in the Mega Drive version) with several stages, and each mission has the player blasting aliens, from the streets to the mother ship, where the mother of all aliens can be found. This task becomes increasingly difficult with each new mission, and the aliens are capable of hiding inside objects such as plants, post boxes, trash cans, drums, and other items. Each mission has an objective such as rescuing people or destroying a UFO. After defeating certain aliens, flying skulls will appear, which can be shot to collect life or energy. Energy is used specifically to power the energy-based attacks of the player's weapon (such as flames or electricity) and to use the much more powerful special weapons. In a similar format as other early Sega arcade games, each character has unlimited usage of various short-range attacks, i.e. punches, kicks. Along with these standard attacks, each character has their own individual weapon (Garth's weapon that shoots lightning is replaced with a flame weapon in the Master System version). Special attacks are also included, and vary depending on the character chosen at the start of the game. For instance, Garth summons a U.S. Air Force starship that drops bombs across the street (in the Master System version he has Karen's special, a ballistic missile strike). Scooter will teleport out of his present location and leave a series of bombs that will blow up on the appearance of aliens, after which he will re-appear (in the Mega Drive and arcade versions he just explodes, leaving his head, which his new body returns to retrieve). Karen calls down a nuclear missile, which incinerates every foe on the screen. However, a large amount of energy is depleted by using each character's special attack, and cannot be used if the energy of the player's character is too low. There are few bosses in the game. The arcade original features an alien spaceship, an alien brain and a single boss in the middle of the game that has three distinct forms. This boss is repeated as a common enemy near the end of the last mission. The Mega Drive port has two of these forms as three separate bosses. At the end of each mission, the side-scrolling gameplay shifts to either a shooting gallery perspective where the player must take out the aliens that pop out of various locations, similar to the bonus stages of Shinobi and Shadow Dancer, both by Sega, or a running section that is similar to the side-scrolling mode but plays like a horizontal shooter instead with projectile weapons. Release In October 1993, Atari Corporation filed a lawsuit against Sega for an alleged infringement of a patent originally created by Atari Corp. in the 1980s, with the former seeking a preliminary injunction to stop manufacturing, usage and sales of hardware and software for both Sega Genesis and Game Gear. On September 28, 1994, both parties reached a settlement in which it involved a cross-licensing agreement to publish up to five titles each year across their systems until 2001. The Master System version of Alien Storm was one of the first five titles approved from the deal by Sega in order to be converted for the Atari Jaguar, but it was never released. In Japan, Game Machine listed Alien Storm on their June 15, 1990 issue as being the most-successful table arcade unit of the month. Megatech reviewed the Sega Genesis version and gave an overall score of 78%, they praised the game for being an outstanding conversion of the arcade version and praised the graphics and saying the gameplay is highly enjoyable. The only criticism they had was the game being too easy. Mega Play's four reviewers gave above average reviews and praising the game’s graphics, animation and felt the game was a near perfect port from the arcade version and being similar to Golden Axe. The criticisms they had was the gameplay being too easy and repetitive. In 2023, Time Extension included the arcade version on their top 25 "Best Beat 'Em Ups of All Time" list.

Alien Storm (Mega-Tech)

Alien Storm (Mega-Tech)

Arcade - Released - 1990

The Mega-Tech System is an arcade cabinet released by Sega in 1989, and Western counterpart to the Mega 6. It was based on the Sega Mega Drive home console, and was designed similarly to Nintendo's PlayChoice-10: players chose games from a menu of eight titles, with credits buying more play time (usually 1 minute per credit) rather than extra lives or continues; reaching a game over screen does not end the play session, and players can start over or choose a different game as long as there was some play time remaining. The Mega-Tech was not released in North America, though did see use in Asia and the PAL regions. Alien Storm is a 1990 beat 'em up shooter arcade game by Sega. It was later ported to the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis and Master System.

All Kamen Rider: Rider Generation 2

Sony PSP - Released - August 2, 2012

All Kamen Rider: Rider Generation 2 is the 2012 sequel to the original Rider Generation for the Nintendo DS, expanding on nearly every facet of the original - the playable stable of Kamen Riders has increased dramatically, older characters have expanded capabilities and movesets, and the game itself was simultaneously released for the DS and Playstation Portable. Just like its predecessor, Rider Generation 2 combines 2D side-scrolling beat-em-up action with stock RPG elements, with each Rider having individual EXP counts and stat training parameters. While the basic structure of a human-played Rider and AI partner remains, Rider Generation 2 also features 2-player functionality via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection or the PSP's Ad Hoc wireless. The password system from Rider Generation 1 has been completely revamped for RG2: instead of unlocking additional stages for each world (and an "incomplete" Kamen Rider Fourze), the new, simpler passwords enable players to instantly unlock nearly any Rider in the playable list, negating the wait to mow down tokusatsu villains with fan/personal favorites - whether your favorite may be the massively overhauled Fourze, the classic Rider-1, the poorly-treated-by-America Black RX, the sole female entrant Kiva-la, the currently-airing (and existing in a prototypical state) Wizard, or another Rider entirely.
