M.U.G.E.N (also written as Mugen, MUGEN and M.U.G.E.N., as the acronym's original meaning was forgotten) is a freeware 2D fighting game engine designed by Elecbyte. Content is created by the community, and thousands of fighters, both original, "ported" from existing fighting games, and from popular fiction, have been created. It is written in C and originally used the Allegro library. The latest versions of the engine now use the SDL library. Some "full game" projects have been created from M.U.G.E.N., either as a compilation of characters that already have existed, or with new creations.

Elecbyte has since dispersed without a trace, with the last traces of them being a leaked version of 1.1. An open source continuation of M.U.G.E.N, named Ikeman Go, has since been created, allowing for extra features such as online play.
