Age of Mythology

Age of Mythology

Windows - October 30, 2002

From Ensemble Studios™, the creators of Age of Empires and Age of Kings, comes Age of Mythology, a game that transports players to a time when heroes did battle with monsters of legend and the gods intervened in the affairs of mortal men. Taking on the role of one of nine ancient civilizations, players guide their people to greatness by commanding all aspects of their empire: gathering resources, raising massive armies, waging war against enemies, establishing profitable trade routes, building new settlements, enhancing production or military might with improvements, exploring new frontiers, and advancing through four distinct ages. In their struggle for supremacy, players can use mythological creatures like Minotaurs and Cyclopses to bolster their armies' strength. Players may also call upon the gods for assistance in flattening enemy towns with meteors or scattering opposing troops with lightning storms. Age of Mythology's revolutionary 3D engine provides the game with gorgeous environments featuring lifelike rolling terrain, beautiful waves and water, realistic sunlight, and lush forests. The units roaming these environments are incredibly detailed, move naturally over the terrain, and come to life through hundreds of fluid animations. Amazing special effects change the look of this beautiful world when the gods get involved: all grows dark as an eclipse takes effect, funnel clouds twist and grow as a tornado sends buildings spinning toward the heavens, and meteors streak in from the heavens to send people and armies at the point of impact flying.

Close Combat III: The Russian Front

Close Combat III: The Russian Front

Windows - Released - December 31, 1998

Yet another Real Time Strategy game... Yet another WWII game... but unlike most WWII games, this one takes place on the *Eastern* Front! It is 1941, and Germany is launching Operation Barbarossa: the invasion of Russia. Finally, a game that captures the magnitude of this epic, 4-year-long battle that ultimately sealed the end of the 3rd Reich! As with the previous CC games, this one is incredibly researched. The sounds of the dozens of different weapons, the hundreds of unit types, the terrain... it is just amazing how much work went into drawing the sprites and the maps. Units can panic, be pinned, suppressed, surrender, regroup... you name it. There are flame tanks, snipers, bunkers, city fighting, winter/summer battles, different weather conditions, mine fields... pretty much anything that might normally happen on a battlefield can happen in this game. And the best parts: it covers the entire Eastern Front battle from 41-45, and it has good multiplayer support. I mean... if you play the Germans, your guys speak German, and if you play the Russians, they speak Russian. You just don't get more realistic than that. :)

Comic Jumper

Comic Jumper

Microsoft Xbox 360 - Released - October 6, 2010

Luckily, the nice people at Twisted Pixel Games notice this and in a fourth wall breaking move they provide them with a temporary base of operations in which Smiley and his friends (and enemies) can stay until they can afford to pay off the loans and re-issue the comic book once again. In order to make enough money, Captain Smiley's assistant Gerda is sent side jobs in other comics which Captain Smiley has to take (for a cash payment up front of course!). The game takes place over several genres of comics (aside from the modern style of Smiley's own comic), and the graphical style and villains all adhere to the comic in which they appear. Captain Smiley will face off against such enemies as tribal villagers, sexist security guards, and cuddly manga animals... all in the name of making his name famous once again!

Dinosaur Hunting

Dinosaur Hunting

Microsoft Xbox - Released - September 18, 2003

Released in Japan in September of 2003, Dinosaur Hunting was developed by Scarab and published by Microsoft Game Studios. It was in translation for a U.S. release in 2004 when publisher Metro3D folded. Review code, box art and screenshots were all distributed in the U.S. and several magazines had reviews ready to go but the game was never released in the U.S. Dinosaur Hunting is a third-person adventure/hunting game with an emphasis on tranquilizing dinosaurs with the perfectly balanced formula. To get these formulas you’ll examine clues like footprints, downed trees, and -- most frequently -- piles of excrement. Examining your environment also reveals clues about dinosaur movement, abilities and the progress of your rival teams. Money is awarded based on the condition of the tranquilized dinosaurs so the goal is to find their formula, discover any weak spots and take them down with as few shots as possible. Regardless of how you do it you also receive some of the component ingredients to formulate tranquilizers from every dinosaur you knock out. Between formulating darts, conserving ammo and searching for clues the game becomes very methodical with rankings based on time taken, damage dealt to the dinosaurs and the number of special targets you were able to find and take down.

Forza Horizon 2 Presents Fast & Furious

Forza Horizon 2 Presents Fast & Furious

Microsoft Xbox 360 - Released - March 27, 2015

Forza Horizon 2 Presents Fast and Furious is a standalone expansion to Forza Horizon 2 to promote the 2015 movie Furious 7. It is an arcade open world racing game. similarly to the original Forza Horizon 2. The game takes place in the same environment known from Forza Horizon 2, but decreased in scale - about one third of the roads and locations from the main game are available to the player. The objective of the game is to obtain ten cars from the movie Furious 7. This is accomplished via participation in various races and other events. The game exhibits many elements known from the core Forza Horizon franchise: the player can participate in circuit races, point-to-point races, showcase events (where he must win against non-standard competitors, like an attack helicopter), speed traps and speedzones, bounty boards and additional challenges known as the bucket list. Many of the features however have been cut - there are no experience points and perks, obtainable cars are limited to the vehicles from the movie cars the player can obtain in his garage (though there are some other cars that are drivable in certain events), and unlike Forza Horizon 2 players cannot paint, upgrade, sell or tune the vehicles. Graphically each version uses a different engine. Differences are notable in draw distance, density of foliage, shadows, rendering and lighting. While both versions have a day-night cycle like the original game, Xbox One introduces more varied weather conditions with atmospheric effects. Any route is basically the same on both versions, but the Xbox One version has more traffic and more variation in the environmental design. Even though sharing the same game world, the events and circuits differ slightly.

The fifth sleeper ship, Hispania, suffered a malfunction in flight, and is thought lost. In the spacelanes between these nations borders and outside of any specific jurisdiction lie undeveloped solar systems, pirate bases, corporate outposts and the neutral Freeports. One of these Freeports has come under attack and been destroyed by an unknown enemy attack. Survivors of the attack, including a freelancer Edison Trent and his business associate, Lonnigan, are evacuated to Planet Manhattan, capital city of the Liberty nation. Once there Edison hears rumors about military buildups and friction between the Sirius nations. It will be up to Trent to seek employment, rebuild his lost assets and discover the meaning behind these rumors. Freelancer is a third person or first person space simulator and trading game, much like Elite or Wing Commander: Privateer. As Trent trades cargo and undertakes missions (following an expanding story arc) he will affect the faction status status of over 50 different groups (comprising of 3000 NPCs). Halo 3: ODST

Halo 3: ODST

Microsoft Xbox One - DLC - May 30, 2015

Halo 3: ODST happens mostly at the same time of the events of Halo 2 and the very beginning of Halo 3. It details the Covenant's invasion to Earth in year 2552 from the point of view of the Orbital Drop Shock Troopers. The player takes the role of various members of the ODST squad in the war-torn city of New Mombasa - most prominently The Rookie, who can be considered the protagonist of the game. A departure from previous games in the Halo series, Halo 3: ODST is more open-ended and features more exploration. The new VISR visor system can provide light amplification and is used to identify friends and foes. The visor also provides map, navigation data, and link-up with the AIs that run the city. The players are also no cybernetic super-soldiers this time; player stamina and health are bigger factors than before, and both the speed and jump height are scaled back. The game features a Firefight mode, a four-player cooperative game mode that is centered around the campaign. Rather than the hardcore sci-fi of previous editions, ODST has influences of film noir and jazz-like elements to complement the soundtrack. Halo 3: ODST also includes Halo 3: Mythic, which is essentially a stripped-down, multiplayer-only version of Halo 3, and includes all Halo 3 downloadable maps, including Heroic, Legendary, and Mythic map packs and three previously unreleased maps.

Halo Custom Edition

Halo Custom Edition

Windows - DLC - March 15, 2004

Halo Custom Edition, commonly abbreviated Halo CE, is a standalone, multiplayer-only, expansion for the PC version of Halo: Combat Evolved. The expansion was released on March 15, 2004 by Gearbox Software as an unsupported version of the original game. Similar to its PC version, the expansion requires a key-code during installation. Halo Custom Edition allows players to browse and play user-created content and maps created with modding kits. Modders would use the Halo Editing Kit to incorporate custom models, images, physics, and data into an easily distributed .MAP file, which is compressed and uploaded. The amount of custom content varies widely but is limited by the game engine's capabilities. A few examples of user-created content may include custom character models that uses an Elite biped instead of the default Spartan biped, a Call of Duty-inspired level or even special animations and effects for weapons, melee and reloading. Most of these user-created content and maps are available in dedicated modding community websites such as Modacity and halomaps.org. Two small features were added to the game such as the ability to display the specific for the gametype currently being played in the server (by pressing F2), and the ability to display the name of all players in the same team above their respective green arrows (by pressing F3). Additionally, an arguably better net-code was put into Halo: Custom Edition as well. The game has noticeably reduced latency issues compared to Halo PC.

Happy Wars

Happy Wars

Microsoft Xbox One - Released - April 24, 2015

Happy Wars is a free-to-play, class-based action RPG game where the player can participate in 15-on-15 battles involving other players and/or bots in fantasy worlds with the goal of storming their enemies' castle and knock down their tower. To do this, the other team must either break through the castle gate with siege weapons or use ladders to ascend the walls and breach the castle. Once in they have to tear down the Big Tower to emerge victorious. Each team's castle however has defense weapons such as explosives, cannons and ballistas to ward off attackers. If a team has not breached the other's castle by the end of the time limit then the game is decided by how many towers each team possesses by the end of the match. They can range from one to seven depending upon the map size and they also function as spawn points for teams. If each team has the same amount of towers by the end of the game it will be sent into sudden death and the first team to build the winning tower wins the match. There are three classes to choose from, Warrior, Cleric and Mage, each with their own set of weapons, items and skills. Warriors are frontline soldiers who charge into battle with swords and shield, attempting to bash their way through the enemy. Cleric is more of a support role and can heal and even resurrect fallen allies as well as build siege weapons. Mages are the magic class which can enchant an ally's weapon to be more destructive and can cast devastating spells upon the enemy team and have no shield unlike the Warrior and Cleric. Instead they can fire range spells to ward off attackers. There are three sets of skills with three different slots (9 in total), each different for their respective class and they are unlockable in the game randomly through experience points the player earns by defeating enemies, building or destroying siege weapons and towers. Warriors can unleash devastating attacks as well as throw rocks to disorient enemies, Clerics can heal allies and summon materials for siege weapons and Mages can enchant weapons as well as call in devastating range attacks. Additionally there is a Team Skill which requires several allies to work, Warriors can use rush a crowd of enemies with a group, Clerics can teleport groups of allies to friendly towers and they even have a spell that will turn their enemies into flowers for instant hit kills. Mages can call in devastating meteor strikes and tornadoes that can ravage a massive area on the battlefield. Players can customize up to three different characters for each class and equip them with weapons, armor, shields and accessories they unlock in battles. Depending upon their performance and level the player is, the better the item will be. Items can be buffed and leveled up by using lower grade weapons to give them special abilities and more devastating power and damage. While the player can unlock these items in game, they can also buy them using the in-game currency and get premium items. The currency of the game consists of Happy Stars and Happy Tickets with stars being acquired through games and the amount depending upon their performance. The player can use these stars in a game called The Happy Spinner where they can bet up to 900 stars and receive weapons, shields, armor, etc. Happy Tickets are bought through Microsoft points and are used to buy premium items through Happy Cards which will give the player a random set of items, from common to rare.
