3-D Ultra Lionel Train Town Deluxe

3-D Ultra Lionel Train Town Deluxe

Windows - Released - September 30, 2000

3-D Ultra Lionel Train Town Deluxe is a stand-alone reissue of 3D Ultra Train Town, which was voted "2000 Family Game of the Year" by the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences. This "Deluxe" release enhances the previous game by adding 50 new missions and a new track creation system. Design your own ultimate railroad system, then jump into your world and interact with every aspect of your creation. Take on the role of conductor and deliver passengers, food, animals and other goods to their destination. Or, hop aboard and ride the rails as a passenger. Play with over 30 authentic models from Lionel's own line of miniature locomotives that span the ages of steam through diesel. Design your track layouts using a multitude of interlocking straights, curves, crisscrosses and intersecting slant pieces. Get help coupling track pieces by using the "Smart Track" option. Make your creation real by adding buildings, trees, bridges, tunnels and other automated objects (like a working crane or a rotating dumper). Using the Layout Editor, choose your locale - from the backyard, kitchen, basement, miniature animated town, a dinosaur farm or even the North Pole or the Moon! Finished projects can be played as well as posted on the Internet for others to download. The beginning tutorials outline the basic play functions (driving trains, moving from track to track, and managing loads). Then you are presented with a series of puzzle scenarios in five "job bins" with varied difficulty that can be played in any order, or skipped altogether if found to be too challenging. Finishing all of the jobs in a bin unlocks bonus tasks with a special animation reward.

3D Ultra Minigolf Deluxe

Windows - Released - 1998

3D Ultra Minigolf Adventures was originally created in 2000, as a sequel to 3D Ultra Minigolf Deluxe, titled Mini Golf Maniacs for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 2, which also was made by Sierra Online. In 2001, the Dynamix game division in charge of making the game was shut down by parent company Sierra Online. The game, while nearly finished, went unreleased for five years until Wanako Studios completed development of the game in 2006. The majority of the original game still exists in Minigolf Adventures, with graphical tweaks to the existing holes, replacement of the original animal characters with human players, and other hole additions. Original in-game photos from Minigolf Maniacs, which are the base of Minigolf Adventures can be found here

3-D Ultra NASCAR Pinball

3-D Ultra NASCAR Pinball

Windows - Released - November 10, 1998

3-D Ultra NASCAR Pinball is, as the name suggests, a pinball game with a racing theme. Unique is that the theme is not only present on the table's background images but that the player actually takes the role of one of four real-life NASCAR drivers. Every race consists of three parts, each represented by one table: preparing, racing and pit stops.

3-D Ultra Pinball

3-D Ultra Pinball

Windows - Released - January 1, 1995

The original 3-D Ultra Pinball game was released in 1995. This game is based on the space simulation game, Outpost. There are three tables named Colony, Command Post, and Mine. Each table holds a set of five challenges. Smaller "mini-tables" are featured with their own set of flippers. The goal is to build and launch a Starship completing the game's entire course.

3-D Ultra Pinball

3-D Ultra Pinball

Windows 3.X - Released - 1995

Some would call it Impossible Pinball. Not that it is difficult to play, rather that you could never build a pinball machine that could do the type of things that this game does. But it seems as though that's the point. As like any pinball game, there is an underlying plot in which you must achieve certain goals on each of the three pinball tables (you can warp between them). This takes you off into the fantasy pinball world, where anything can happen. Tanks can attack your ball, comets can fly in and create a crater in the middle of the board. Who knows what will happen next.

3-D Ultra Pinball: Creep Night

3-D Ultra Pinball: Creep Night

Windows 3.X - Released - September 23, 1996

Pinball with a strong horror motif. In the 3-D Ultra Pinball tradition, many of the effects achieved on these tables could not be reproduced on traditional machines. There are even cutaways to mini-video games where you can rack up bonus points. Tables can be played individually, or all at once in a campaign to beat them.

3-D Ultra Pinball: Space Colony

3-D Ultra Pinball: Space Colony

Windows - Released - 1995

The first in Dynamix and Sierra On-Line's 3D Ultra series, 3D Ultra Pinball is a little more than the usual digital diversion of the arcade staple. Released in 1995 and set in the Outpost universe, a strategy game from the previous year, it has you preparing for a space war with nowt but some flippers and ball bearing with questionable physics. While questionable, those physics still manage to play well. The three intertwining tables are each packed with things to do and tasks to complete and are presented in a well thought out and uncluttered way. There are three tables, Colony, Mine and Command Post. Each has their own side sections to gather points, unlock other sections of the level or progress the story. Add to that a number of smaller bonus tables hidden throughout and you've got a surprising amount of content considering there's only three tables. I find it commendable for a pinball game to have a story, but it's not particularly engrossing. The simple tale of intergalactic warfare sees you build up a colony with the ultimate aim to build and launch a spaceport structure. You do this by completing the 5 tasks on all three tables at least once, then go back to the Colony table and aim the ball in the right building and select it from a number of bonuses. With so much to see and do, it could take a fair few tries to reach the end - I've never managed it - but the end goal isn't necessarily the point here. The point is the tables themselves. And with such variety packed within all of them, it easily makes 3D Ultra Pinball one of the best pinball games out there

3-D Ultra Pinball: Thrillride

Aces of the Deep

Aces of the Deep

MS-DOS - Released - 1994

Coming two years before the famed "Silent Hunter" Aces of the deep was a deep submarine simulation game. Coming at the tale end of Dynamix's period vehicle simulators (including "Red Barron" and "Aces of the Pacific") Aces of the Deep is a very polished simulation following in that tradition. The game starts with the player selecting a period of the Second World War to serve in. It is possible to play the game from the start of the war until the bitter end. The player takes command of a U-boat and attempts to fulfill optional missions including convey hunting and area patrols. The game gives the player command over every vital function of the U-boat including designating the speed, orientation, and depth of the boat. Furthermore the player is responsible for finding enemy ships through a periscope. These ships, and the waves of the sea, are beautifully (for the time) 3d modeled with an eye towards historical accuracy. Once a ship has been found the player must correctly calculate the run of torpedoes through a relatively deep targeting computer. The game includes a midi sound track of period accurate tunes. It also features a rather diverse range of sounds for the U-boat as well as adiqute, but limited, voices for various crew-members in BOTH German and English. All in all, Aces of the Deep succeeds in fostering the player to partake in a suspenseful naval adventure. With the ability to play in "iron man mode" the choice to "CRASH DIVE!" will enthrall the aspiring WWII Wolf-pack leader. Your accomplishments will be tracked versus a leader board that is historically accurate to other legendary commanders. Gain medals for your service and catch-up on the news at the local brothel in between patrols to get the latest scoop on where fertile hunting ground may be. HAPPY HUNTING!

Aces of the Pacific: Expansion Disk: WWII: 1946

Aces of the Pacific: Expansion Disk: WWII: 1946

MS-DOS - DLC - 1992

This expansion set to Aces of the Pacific is premised on what might have happened in the pacific theater if WWII had not ended in 1945. Based on research of the allied war plans and documents, the player is given the chance to fly in the campaigns that might have been. Some of the aircraft that were being prototyped when the war ended are included. These are the Grumman F7F Tigercat, the Grumman F8F Bearcat, the Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star (a jet), the improved Goodyear F2G-2 Corsair, and for the Japanese Navy the Kyushu J7W Shinden, the Nakajima Kikka (a jet), and the Mitsubishi Ki-83.

Sequel to Aces of the Pacific, Aces over Europe takes place in the Western Theater of Operations during WW2. Fly fighters and fighter-bombers for either England, Germany, or the United States, escorting heavy bombers, attacking ground troops, or just taking control of the skies over Europe. Aces over Europe features improved graphics over its predecessor, including smoother models and individual squadron markings on planes. Terrain graphics have also been slightly enhanced to aid in navigation. AOE features campaign modes for all three sides. Although not truly dynamic, the campaigns feature random missions based on your plane type and squadron, making each campaign different. Player controlled planes include American Lightnings, Thunderbolts, and Mustangs, British Spitfires, Tempests, and Typhoons, and German Bf-109's, Fw-190's, and Me-262's.

After Dark Games

After Dark Games

Apple Mac OS - Released - 1998

After Dark Games is a spin-off from the successful After Dark screensaver collections. It features the following eleven original games: Hula Girl: A "timed" game of sorts (the screen moves upward and you can't leave the visible area), Hula Girl features none other than a girl with a hula hoop. Grab the cola, cupcakes, ice cream, and hula-hoops while avoiding spiders, broccoli, frogs, and mean sisters. Each platform you land on grabs you one point, but watch your yukk-o-meter! Fish Shtick: Unscramble the letters before the clock reaches 0! Collect as many points as you can and get a high score! One point for four-letter words, two for 5-letter words, three for 6-letter words, etc. Roof Rats: Get everyone off the roof and leave yourself with as few rooms remaining as possible. Eliminate rooms by putting two-or-more of the same colour together and double-clicking. Each person has their own number of floors that they can jump off of. The grannie has to be on ground level, the rat can jump off of 1 floor, the dog - 2 floors, the pogo-boy - 3 floors, the boxing kangaroo - 4 floors, the buff man - 5 floors. Solitaire: No twists here, just a simple game of Klondike. Roger Dodger: You control a glowing orb that needs to collect power-ups (green) and then make its way to the pulsing green gateway. Avoid red things; they'll kill you! Zapper: Standard trivia; yes-or-no questions. Every time you get three-in-a-row correct and your time will increase, as well as the jackpot (third) point level. Mowin' Maniac: Can you say Pac-Man? That's all this game is: a variant with a lawnmower theme. Bad Dog 911: Using six letters, create as many words as you can before time runs out! Every "real" word will move the scaffolding closer to you, but the clock is ticking! When it's half-past and you haven't gotten the scaffolding yet, you die! Toaster Run: Ah, the little toaster that was the first in a series of infamous screen savers. Now the little toaster is on a mission to gather all the toys and put the child in bed. Hitting an object causes the toaster to lose power; bread increases it. Watch out for the TV! The static really hurts! Foggy Boxes: Dots in disguise. Unfortunately, you can only play against the computer. MooShu: The classic game of MahJongg, carried all the way from China! Select two tiles of matching design that are free on either the left or right and they disappear! Win by removing all the tiles.

Alien Legacy

Alien Legacy

MS-DOS - Released - May 14, 1994

After an alien attack in 2043, great technological leaps were made and space travel was significantly improved upon. In 2119, fearing extinction, Earth built gigantic seedships designed as "arks" to propel people and the sum of human knowledge across the stars. One of these seedships, the UNS Calypso, is sent to Beta Caeli star system which is the farthest colony attempted yet. In 2135, a second seedship, the UNS Tantalus, is dispatched to the same destination in order to better the chances of human survival. The Tantalus is equipped with a more advanced fusion engine and thus will reach Beta Caeli some 21 years ahead of the Calypso. The player takes the role of the Calypso's captain. There is no sign of the Tantalus. All you have are some 5000 colonists, past radio transmissions and a few key advisers to help you colonize this new unfamiliar solar system. The game has three distinctive parts: global strategy, colony management and searching planets. The latter is always the first part before colonizing a planet: Every planet is divided into sectors which can be chosen on a world map. Then the game switches to a 3D view (which can be switched to a 2D view) in which the player explores the sectors in search of different symbols - clicking on them results in certain benefits. Examples are ore and energy, the two main resources in Alien Legacy, new life forms or traces of a lost civilization which give hints about the awful events of the past. With the correct technology the player can scan both the world map and the sectors to shorten the search - but this costs fuel. The strategy mostly involves sending out ships to new planets to colonize and researching. Research is powered by "research points" in different categories, e.g. biology or math, which are gathered when searching sectors. By using those points the player gets different technologies of various use like more productive mines or a better range for space ships. Lastly the colonies are viewed from a top-down perspective. Here the player constructs up to 16 buildings to produce resources or space ships. Those buildings have to be maintained or can be upgraded/replaced with the newest research achievements. Every colony also needs a steady number of people, material and robots or it can't produce. The game is played in real-time; the rounds (two rounds represent a month) elapse if the player is active or not. But time can be slowed down to ease the stress. After about 2000 rounds the peaceful colonizing is over, and the player has to fight a war against an unknown foe.

Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura

Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura

Windows - Released - August 21, 2001

The luxury zeppelin IFS Zephyr begins her maiden voyage from Caladon in the Kingdom of Arland to Tarant, one of the largest cities in the technologically advanced Unified Kingdom. Suddenly, while the zeppelin is cruising over mountains, two monoplanes attack it and eventually shoot it down. The two half-ogre attackers die in flames along with all their victims except two who miraculously survived. However, one of them, an old gnome, is mortally wounded. Just before he dies, he gives a silver ring to the other survivor and tells him to "find the boy". The witness of the crash, a man named Virgil, declares that the now only survivor is "The Living One", a reincarnation of a deity, and offers to follow him wherever he goes. The hero begins a long and perilous search for the mysterious boy, the origins of the silver ring, and the unknown enemy who was behind the attack on the zeppelin. Arcanum is a role-playing game similar in concept and many gameplay principles to Fallout. It is set in a unique world, which can be described as mixture between Tolkienesque fantasy, steampunk technology and elements of British and North American culture of the 19th century: dwarves may carry molotov cocktails, and a half-orc protagonist can travel by train between Victorian-like cities. Magic and technology are opposed to each other; most humans and dwarves embrace technology, while some elf clans stick to the old ways and consider scientific progress evil. In the beginning of the game the player creates the main character, choosing from a variety of races, attributes, magical or technological disciplines, social skills, backgrounds, etc. When the character levels up, the player can increase his main parameters as well as any available skills. Like in Fallout games, the player directly controls only one character; however, companions who join the party may be given orders, and their inventory can be managed by the player. The game is open-ended: the player is free to explore the vast world from the onset, undertaking a large amount of side quests or following the main story. Social interaction plays a significant role: depending on the player character's charisma and intelligence attributes, as well as persuasion skill, many problems can be solved in a non-violent way. The amount of companions willing to follow the protagonist also depends on the latter's charisma rating; companions may also leave the party if they disagree with the hero's behavior. The player can select one of the three combat modes for the game: real-time, turn-based, and fast-paced turn-based. Turn-based mode is similar to the combat in Fallout games: characters require action points to move, attack, or cast spells. The game includes an editor called WorldEdit, which allows players to create their own maps, campaigns, and non-playable characters. Objects from the base game can be carried across to the player-created scenario. The scenery editor allows players to create their own objects. It is also possible to set and change game variables, i.e. the amount of skill points required to perform a specific task.

Commodore 64 - Released - July 1, 1984

The player controls Thor, a caveman, who rides a stone unicycle. Thor is searching for the "Meaning of Life" within several mountains. The player must navigate through the mountains, collecting clams. Like the comic strip, they are used as money, in this case to pay the toll to another caveman, Peter, to access the next mountain. There are two modes of play. The first is along the mountainside, where the user can move all four directions, but must avoid falling off the cliff, slamming into the wall, hitting a rock or a hole, or encountering the creature Grog, who will yell "GROG" and knock the player off the mountain. There is also a green dinosaur that will eat the player's "tire" on contact. The player may enter caves to enter the second mode. The caves are dark except for a beam of light emanating from the player, and clams must be collected without running into stalagmites. At the end of a mountain, there is a bridge to a new mountain. If the player has enough clams, the game continues; otherwise, it is necessary to return to find more clams.

You also have to connect all the little villages in the province with roads and make some industry, like stone mining, grapes, etc. for which you can then create markets in your city. Carcassonne

Carcassonne

Microsoft Xbox 360 - Released - June 27, 2007

Master strategy in the medieval world! In the classic board game Carcassonne, the medieval countryside thrives as you and your opponents place tiles and complete towns, roads, and farms while competing to amass the most points. Own the largest towns, longest roads, and biggest farms. Carcassonne is a turn-based strategy game for 2 to 5 players based on the German board game of the same name. By playing land tiles one by one, players build up a landscape of cities, roads, farms, and monasteries. Players compete to claim control of the features they build with a limited supply of follower pieces. Judging where to play the tiles and when to use a follower or not is a deceptively simple process - yet the depth of the game stems from judging when and where to use the followers to gain the most points.

Castle of Dr. Brain

Castle of Dr. Brain

Apple Mac OS - Released - 1991

Castle of Dr. Brain is an educational video game released in 1991 by Sierra On-Line. It is a puzzle adventure game. The object of the game is to successfully navigate the puzzles Dr. Brain has set up in order to become the mad scientist's assistant, a position Dr. Brain had advertised in the local classified section. To enter the castle, the player must play a game of memory at the front gate. Inside, the player must solve puzzles within the hallways and rooms of the castle. There are also three mazes in which the player must guide an elevator between and among different floors. Many of the puzzles require skill in mathematics and logic, but the game requires knowledge in a broad range of subjects. One puzzle requires the player to solve a cryptogram, and the penultimate level deals primarily with astronomy. In a rather surreal level, the player must put together a jigsaw puzzle which, when completed, becomes a room through which the player passes to go to the next level. Castle of Dr. Brain features a point-and-click mode of gameplay and three levels of difficulty, which the player can change at any time. The player can also change the pointer from a hand, which will interact with puzzles, to an eye, which will give information about an object, occasionally leading to clues to help solve puzzles. Typically, pointing the hand or the eye at an object that isn't a puzzle will give a joke about it. The game also features Hint Coins, which the player earns by solving puzzles and can use for assistance on puzzles they are having difficulty with.

ScummVM - Released - 1989

In the beginning of the 21st century, Earth is experiencing a global oil shortage. Surprisingly, Tunisia remains one of the few countries still in possession of large quantities of high-quality oil. USA and Soviet governments race each other in their attempts to purchase as much oil as possible. Finally, the Soviets take a step further and kidnap the US ambassador, hoping to provoke an international incident. Naval Officer Johnny Westland is sent to Tunisia with the order of rescuing the ambassador and preventing further escalation of the conflict. Code-Name: Iceman is primarily an adventure game similar to Sierra's other works in that genre. The player navigates the protagonist in eight different directions from third-person view, and types text commands to interact with the environment. The command "Look" may be typed separately and lead to different text descriptions depending on where on screen the protagonist is positioned. The game is similar to Police Quest series in that it relies on realistic procedures, in this case military instructions, first aid, etc. The player may reach dead ends and resort to restoring an earlier save if some of these procedures are not followed properly. In addition, a considerable portion of the game consists of submarine simulation, requiring the player to navigate a submarine and fight enemy craft.

Conquests of Camelot: The Search for the Grail

Conquests of Camelot: The Search for the Grail

ScummVM - Released - 1990

It is the ninth century, and Camelot, the legendary castle ruled by King Arthur, has fallen under a curse. Famine and drought plague the kingdom because of the love triangle between the king, his wife Gwenhyver, and the knight Launcelot. It appears that only the mysterious Holy Grail can restore Camelot, and three knights - Launcelot, Gawaine, and Galahad - embark on a journey to find it, and soon disappear without trace. King Arthur leaves his castle in search of the missing knights, hoping to locate the Grail as well. His quest takes him to real and mythical locations in England, and later to Jerusalem and other areas of the Holy Land. Conquests of Camelot is an adventure game that requires the player to input text commands, mostly by combining verbs and objects (such as "look man", "take purse", etc.). A few commands (such as "ask about") have keyboard shortcuts. Unlike most other adventures, the game does not focus extensively on inventory-based puzzles. Rather, it presents a diverse array of tasks depending on concrete situations. These involve exploration, solving riddles, gathering information, participating in arcade sequences such as jousting, and others. Rudimentary money management is present as well. Many problems have different solutions, and it is possible to reach the final part of the game even without having completed some of the essential quests (e.g. failing to save the knights). However, Arthur is being judged by the game in three different categories: skill (referring to the action sequences), wisdom (evaluating the amount of cultural information gathered), and soul (determining the moral value of Arthur's action). Failure to achieve a high score in the last category leads to a bad ending. The game is set in a concrete historical period, but adds an alternate reality to it, assuming that pagan deities really existed, but were overshadowed by Christian worship. However, there are only a few references to real religious practices of the time or any historical characters.

Conquests of the Longbow: The Legend of Robin Hood

Conquests of the Longbow: The Legend of Robin Hood

ScummVM - Released - 1991

The year is 1193, and the Third Crusade has just ended. Richard the Lionheart, King of England, returns to Europe from the Holy Land. On the way, he is ambushed and abducted by the soldiers of the Austrian duke Leopold. The duke demands a large ransom to be paid in exchange for the king's freedom. However, the king's brother, Prince John, is content with the situation and plotting to take the throne for himself. That is when the legendary Robin Hood, one who robs from the rich and gives to the poor, decides to raise the money needed to liberate the king, with the help of his fellow outlaws of Sherwood Forest. Conquests of the Longbow is an adventure game and a follow-up to Conquests of Camelot. It uses an icon-based interface common to most contemporary Sierra adventures. Like its spiritual predecessor, it differs from most other games in the genre by reducing traditional inventory-based puzzles in favor of exploration and varied tasks dictated by the situation at hand. These include talking to characters, gathering information, making decisions, solving riddles, or participating in mini-games such as combat, archery contest, and Nine Men's Morris (with adjustable difficulty). The game is divided into days; each day is completed when certain tasks have been fulfilled. It is, however, possible to fail some of those tasks and still advance the plot. Several situations can be handled in different ways. The player's decisions affect Robin Hood's ranking towards the end of the game. Number of points scored, the amount of money collected for the ransom, and the fate of Robin's fellow outlaws are considered when awarding the rank. Depending on these factors the player reaches one of the four possible endings, ranging from Robin getting hanged to a happy conclusion of his love life.

Donald Duck's Playground

Donald Duck's Playground

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1986

Donald Duck's Playground is an Educational Multi-Type game, developed and published by Sierra Entertainment, which was released in 1986. Here’s yet another cute little thing. You control a lovable character who’s irritable, yet lovable quack that goes by the name of Donald Duck! Donald wishes to help his nephews out. They are building a perfect playground in the park (they’ve got a tree house, a fortress and a space rocket). In order to get them more equipment for the park, Donald must earn money doing odd jobs. There are four things Donald can do. He can sort packages at the airport. Different packages are moving past him on the conveyor belt and he needs to pick up the correct one and throw it in the correct cart. Next job is in the toy-store. Donald needs to sort toys on shelves using the later, but there’s a train on the way and if the shelves aren’t secure everything can fall off. Now we come to my favorite… It’s the fruit catching/sorting part time occupation. Donald must catch the fruit and place it in the correct box. If the fruit isn’t caught or is placed incorrectly you won’t get paid (and Donald gets angry). And last, but by no means least is the work at the train switchboards. You’ll see where the train is and get a message where you should guide the train. You have six switches to do this. In other aspects the game is more than solid for its time (great graphics, good sound, cute idea, lovable hero, etc.). Now go and build that perfect playground for the wee ones.

During the carrier he can play several seasons and his players improve their abilities when they get more experienced or slow down when they grow older. In the action mode this managerial duties aren't important and the player can concentrate on the matches. Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers

Windows 3.X - Released - 1993

Gabriel Knight is a wise-cracking bookstore owner and would-be author. He is the last in a long line of Shadow Hunters, those fated to fight supernatural forces of evil. Tormented by terrifying nightmares, he must spend every waking moment scouring the side streets and back alleys of New Orleans for the key to his dark past. One day, a blood-chilling murder shocks the inhabitants of the city. The police detective assigned to investigate the crime is Gabriel's friend. In the beginning Gabriel collects evidence in hope of using the material for his new novel; but soon he finds himself personally involved in the investigation, and plunges deeper into the world of secret societies and murderous cults. Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers is a third-person puzzle-solving adventure game. Created by Jane Jensen, the game differs from Sierra's Quest games (e.g. Space Quest) by having a realistic setting and focusing (despite its supernatural elements and humor) on mature themes and detective work. In this way it is more similar to the company's earlier Laura Bow games. The game's icon-based interface is the same as in Sierra's previous titles, with verb commands that allow interaction with the game world and its inhabitants. Though the game still has plenty of inventory-based puzzles characteristic for classic adventure, its gameplay is heavily inclined towards dialogue. Typically, Gabriel will have to interrogate other characters, choosing conversation topics and thus gradually finding clues and advancing towards the mystery's solution.

Gin Rummy

Gin Rummy

Microsoft Xbox 360 - Released - September 3, 2008

Gin Rummy is an electronic simulation of the card game of the same name. Generally it is a two-player game, but this version supports up to four players online with teams of two playing against each other. A standard deck of 52 cards is used and they each receive a ranking, from ace (one point) to the three face cards (Jack, Queen King) worth ten points. The dealer deals ten cards to each player. Two piles are made in the middle: a discard pile (face-up) and the stock pile (face-down). Each turn players draw one card, from any pile, and also have to discard one card. The goal of the game is to score most points by forming melds (consists of sets and runs) and eliminating deadwood. A set is three or four cards of the same rank (three times a five for instance) and a run is three or more cards of the same suit in consecutive order (four, five, and six of spades for instance). The useless cards that remain in the player's hand are the deadwood. The game can be ended by a player who has a hand of sets and runs and the points value of the remaining deadwood totals equal or less than ten points. This is called knocking. Knocking is optional when the above requirements are met and required when the deadwood equals zero (called "going Gin"). At that moment the other player still has a chance to win. When a player announces to knock, he lays his hand out with the melds and deadwood separated. The other player can then reduce his deadwood by laying off any cards that fit into the first player's meld, thereby reducing his deadwood. A lay-off is not allowed when the first player went Gin. After that, the points are counted, along with different types of bonus scores. The game is played from a first-person perspective and includes a tutorial to get familiar with the rules of Gin Rummy. The game supports the Vision camera. While playing cards can also be sorted manually to get a good overview. The game includes different variants of Gin, each with their own rules: Classic Gin Rummy Oklahoma Gin Hollywood Gin 3-hand Gin Speed Gin Rimmy Custom Gin Rummy where you can alter the rules

Ground Control

Ground Control

Windows - Released - June 1, 2000

Ground Control is set in the 25th century. Mankind emerged from the devastation of the Third World War (known in the game as "The Sixteen-minutes War", which almost wiped out the whole of humanity) and managed to colonize several planets across the galaxy. The Earth is ruled by a council called GCC (Global Central Command) that is formed by elected representatives and representatives of the mega corporations which rose to power after the fall of the Terran nations. The game's plot revolves around the conflict between the Crayven Corporation and the Order of the New Dawn for the possession of the distant world of Krig 7-B. In the beginning of the game, the player assumes the role of Major Sarah Parker of the Crayven Corporation as she leads the Crayven forces in order to eliminate the presence of the "Dawnies" (her derogatory nickname in reference to followers of the Order). In the second campaign, the player assumes control of Deacon Jarred Stone in his attempt to drive the "Crays" from the surface of Krig 7-B. During the course of the campaign, however, both characters unravel a dark secret hidden within the depths of the planet, a secret that threatens all mankind, and turns out to be the reason for such interest in what seems to be a desolate fringe world.

Heart of China

Heart of China

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1991

Heart of China from Dynamix is the second adventure game from the company which is probably better known for flight sims like A10 Tank Killer and the infamous Red Baron. It puts the player into the boots of ‘Lucky’ Jake Masters, an all-American hero who gets a mission to save a rich man’s kidnapped daughter from the hands of the local villain. It is a point’n’click adventure game which merges a good story with beautiful graphics and stunning music. Heart of China (HoC) has the same control system Dynamix pioneered in Rise of The Dragon (their first adventure game). HoC can be played either with mouse, keyboard or even with joystick. Only a few actions are available (look, operate, move) but this is supported with some clever inventory manipulation. Most of the scenes are viewed from a first person perspective through your character’s eyes. The first person view means the locations and characters are usually presented with static hand drawn pictures with odd animation sequence here and there. The Amiga version has 32 colour graphics which, despite the low number of colours, manage to look clear and beautiful. The interactive storyline in Heart of China is not linear - meaning there are several ways to solve problems and that player actions affect the flow and the direction of the adventure. This also means there are several entirely different endings. There’s very little to fault in this game. Some players might be put off by the fact that unlike in LucasArts adventures, the main character can die or the adventure can otherwise run into a dead end. The control system takes some learning. Also the arcade parts might annoy the adventure game purists. Without doubt one of the finest adventure games on the Amiga. Heart of China combines quality graphics and sound with a funny and interesting storyline. It contains unique features like plot branches, a totally original control system and deep character interaction. Like ‘Lucky’ Jake Masters likes to think about himself, this one is an Ace.

Heart of China

Apple Mac OS - Released - 1992

Kate, the daughter of a wealthy businessman named E.A. Lomax, is abducted by a Chinese warlord named Li Deng near Chengdu, where she was volunteering as a nurse. Lomax recruits the former World War I fighter pilot Jake "Lucky" Masters for a dangerous mission: travel to Hong-Kong, locate a mysterious ninja, and find a way to infiltrate Li Deng's fortress and rescue Kate. Heart of China is an adventure game with a romantic theme somewhat reminiscent of films such as Raiders of the Lost Ark. The game is set during the 1930's in China as well as a few other locations. It uses a simple point-and-click system for interaction and object manipulation, and is very similar visually and gameplay-wise to Rise of the Dragon. Some of the tasks in the game have multiple solutions, allowing the player to pursue different methods and choose different responses in branching dialogues. However, some choices may lead to the protagonist's death or bring the investigation to a dead end. There are also a few arcade sequences, which can be skipped if the player fails to complete them after several tries. The game utilizes digitized photos of live actors superimposed on hand-painted graphics.

Hi-Res Adventure #2: Wizard and the Princess

Hi-Res Adventure #2: Wizard and the Princess

ScummVM - Released - 1980

The game (according to the backcover (box/folder/manual) of the Atari 8-bit family and Apple II original and rerelease versions) takes place in the land of Serenia where King George's daughter Princess Priscilla has been kidnapped by an evil wizard named Harlin. Harlin has held her inside his castle far in the mountains. The King has offered half of his kingdom to anyone brave enough to travel to the Wizard's castle, defeat him and return his daughter. The player assumes the role of a happy wanderer who answers this challenge. The re-releases (Apple II, Atari 8-bit, and C64) contained additional plot added to the manual explaining how the wanderer made it to Serenia in the first place; some time long into the future after Harlin had been defeated by the Wanderer, he challenged the player to again repeat the actions leading to his defeat. He boasted of using his magic to change the world creating obstacles for anyone who would challenge him (he moved the desert around the village of Daventry, the northern sea splitting Serenia in two, and Great Mountains in the North on his half of the continent). He turned back the sands of time leaving the adventurer in the desert just outside the village of Serenia. He mocks the hero telling him that he may have been defeated once, but he couldn't be defeated a second time. The princess gives the hero some words of advice and a computer to help him defeat Harlin, and tells him he has become the wanderer (grandfather paradox & bootstrap paradox). The manual story as reprinted was also included with the Roberta Williams Collection (a compilation of games from Roberta Williams) and the King's Quest Collection Series (one of the compilations of King's Quest games). The introduction for Adventure of Serenia, explained that the adventurer, with the help of a computer, had magically transported to Serenia to save the Princess.
