4 Wheel Thunder

4 Wheel Thunder

Sega Dreamcast - Released - May 4, 2000

4 Wheel Thunder is the off-road racing sequel to the power-boat racing game Hydro Thunder. In this game, players race around two types of courses; huge outdoor tracks and smaller indoor tracks. All in all, there are 24 areas in which to race, including various day/night and rain/sunshine variations. The game includes the standard championship, practice race, and two player modes. The Thunder series of games is unique in that the key to winning the race lies not in careful steering and braking, instead focusing more in finding the boost power-ups that lie around the tracks. Each boost icon adds a few seconds of time to your boost meter. The player then can press a boost button to increase the speed of the truck dramatically. Without using boost power-ups, the player has no chance of winning a race.

Blitz: The League

Blitz: The League

Sony Playstation 2 - Released - October 17, 2005

Blitz: The League is the first football game with no NFL license in many years - because EA signed an exclusive deal with the NFL, Midway developed one without the license. The game has 17 fantasy teams all with their own look and feel - from personalities to logos. The game differentiates itself further from official games by giving the players an off-field presence, often involving sex, performance-enhancing drugs and violence. The game has input from the writer for Playmakers, the football-based soap opera the NFL forced ESPN to cancel. Blitz: The League has 8-man teams, and makes spectacular action-packed moves easier than in real life. Impressive moves boost your Clash meter, which allows you to pull off unrealistic moves, such as easier running due to Bullet Time, and some brutally tough defences tackles. If these tackles happen frequently enough the players will fight hockey-style, lunging into wild tackles. The team with the most tackles from this gains the Unleashed mode, which has even more gruesome moves, of a style the NFL would not allow to be associated with their product. Additional features include multiplayer action with head-to-head online play and complete customization options of players, teams, stadiums and more. Lawrence Taylor appears as the poster boy.

Blitz: The League

Blitz: The League

Microsoft Xbox 360 - October 17, 2005

Blitz: The League brings you more Blitz-style play, but with more content and harder hits. The League includes on-field injuries, ranging from snapping bones to bloody, career-ending hits. Now you can control the entire franchise, dealing with personnel decisions and front-office politics. New visual game modes let you view crucial game moments and moves in slow motion. In addition to traditional multiplayer, you can also play the no-holds-barred style of Blitz football online.

Blitz: The League

Blitz: The League

Microsoft Xbox - Released - March 12, 2003

Blitz: The League is an American football game by Midway as an unlicensed extension of their NFL Blitz series. Released after the NFL signed an exclusive licensing deal with Electronic Arts, it was released in October 2005 for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. This game is the first in the Blitz series to receive an "M" rating by the ESRB due to the graphic violence, explicit language, and drug use depicted. Lawrence Taylor, who provides voice acting for the game, serves as its official spokesman. In 2006, a second version of the game was released on the Xbox 360 in October. In December 2006, a portable version was released on the PlayStation Portable (under the title Blitz: Overtime). These versions included the voicework and likeness of former pro linebacker Bill Romanowski. The game was originally intended to be a Wii launch title, but the Wii-version was delayed[1] and eventually canceled.[2] On January 22, 2007, the game was refused classification[3] by the Office of Film and Literature Classification in Australia, effectively banning the game there. The game was banned as the use of drugs was related to incentives and rewards.

Blitz: The League II

Blitz: The League II

Sony Playstation 3 - Released - October 13, 2008

Blitz: The League II is the sequel to Blitz: The League where once again the player steps into a fantasy football league where sex, violence and drugs are standard. This version still has the same features as it's predecessor such as Exhibition where players can go one-on-one against the CPU or against a friend if they choose and Campaign where the player takes control of a coach assigned to a down and out team and bring them up to prominence and become League champions by training players through either legal or illegal means and view a constantly changing storyline of their star athletes lives. The Clash Mode is once again present which is built up by hitting opponents with dirty and late hits to unleash a powerful tackle that can turn the tide of a game at any moment. Injuries are still present with enhanced and realistic graphics showing broken bones and tearing tissue through x-rays of the players bodies at the moment of impact. One new feature is the ability to pin point the location of an opposing players body they wish to hit, the larger the area the greater the chances they will hit, but the smaller will have the player use precision timing but will have greater results in creating a devastating injury. There is also online capabilities where players can connect through their respective service in quick versus matches against friends or engage in an online campaign-mode as well as downloadable content. NFL Legend Lawrence Taylor once again makes an appearance as Quentin Sands, the New York Nightmares devastating linebacker, along with many other retired NFL stars who provide their voice talents to the experience. Also lending their voices are comedians Jay Mohr and Frank Caliendo (who is most notable for his impressions including John Madden).

Blitz: The League II

Blitz: The League II

CarnEvil

CarnEvil

Arcade - Released - 1998

CarnEvil is set in the fictional town of Greely Valley, Iowa, wherein the protagonist (called "Jacob" in the manual) takes a tour through the town cemetery. According to the story's premise, if a golden token is inserted into the mouth of the jester's head on top of the tombstone of "Professor Ludwig von Tökkentäkker", a haunted amusement park will appear after long absence. Jacob and his friend Lisa investigate this legend, and fulfill the conditions of the premise; whereupon the jester's head comes to life and raises the undead carnival from the ground, all trying to take their brains. During this process, Jacob obtains a shotgun from the shooting gallery at the entrance to fight through hordes of monsters, zombies, and insects. Jacob faces enemies in the three attractions - the Haunted House, Rickety Town, and Freak Show - and must defeat a strong 'boss character' at the end of each, as well as periodic sub-bosses. After escaping all three areas, he enters the Big Top, and fights clowns and circus animals to reach the center ring, whence he is taken to Tökkentäkker's zeppelin to face Tökkentäkker and his jester Umlaut. Tökkentäkker is defeated when the player strikes him into the zeppelin's propellers, causing both to collapse. Thereafter Jacob wakes in the cemetery, which has returned to normal. Seeing the token emerge from Tökkentäkker's tombstone, he re-inserts it while Lisa orders him not to do so.

Chaos à la Maison

Chaos à la Maison

Chaos at Home has given us a rather good surprise: offering a rather successful cartoon atmosphere, the game could very well have pulled out of the game through the mass of party-games that come out on Wii. Unfortunately, it does not offer enough content to win against the competition: it will take you less than two hours to go around the 17 mini-games offered which however remain quite nice for two players.

In Cold Blood

Sony Playstation - Released - March 26, 2001

In Cold Blood requires players to use more brains than brawn in solving a case of international intrigue, puzzle-solving, clue gathering, and the unwinding of a tangled web of espionage, double-crosses and a sinister plot that might threaten the free world. The story unwinds in an unusual manner: At the start of the game, your character, Agent John Cord, has been captured by the enemy and is in the midst of a grueling interrogation. The scenes from the game come from his memories as he is undergoing this ordeal, with players taking on his previous adventures that lead him up to this point. It is a spy-thriller in the vein of James Bond, and as Cord remembers more, the overall story begins to make more sense. Throughout In Cold Blood, players will have to search for hidden objects and talk to a whole host of characters, attempting at every turn to solve the puzzles that pop up in their way. But tricky conundrums aren't the only thing blocking their paths -- they'll also have to take control of Agent Cord in high-octane gun battles against enemy agents. Occasionally, the player can outwit the enemies, but they'll often they'll have to fight it out in a duel to the death.

John Woo Presents Stranglehold

John Woo Presents Stranglehold

Windows - Released - September 18, 2007

Stranglehold is John Woo's first foray into videogames. Whether Woo was intimately involved in guiding Stranglehold or more of a watchful father, his influence can be felt in every frame. Midway has managed to capture the essence of a Woo film -- in some ways more than Woo has over the past decade. You get everything a fan could ask for: excessive gunplay, heavily stylized cinematic moments, melodrama, slow-motion dives, dual-fisted pistols, and, of course, doves aplenty. Some have called Woo's films a beautiful ballet of violence. Stranglehold is less ballet and more a mosh pit of bullets. Either way, lots of people die and little in the environment is left standing once the smoke clears. The spiritual successor to one of Woo's most popular films, Stranglehold puts you in the shoes of famed Inspector Tequila. Chow Yun Fat comes stateside to reprise his role (though this time in English), adding a level of authenticity. The story is convoluted -- something about a kidnapped girl, a dead cop, and drug money. The cut-scenes are sometimes dripping with melodrama. But that's a good thing. Melodrama is a John Woo signature move and, like so much in Stranglehold, it helps immerse gamers in the world of Hard Boiled.

It is the sixth installment in the Mortal Kombat franchise, adding new gameplay mechanics (including a manual " Combo Breaker" system, stage-specific "death traps", and stage-specific weapons), online multiplayer, new mini-games, and a new adventure/fighting hybrid Konquest Mode that serves as the prologue to the events taking place in Mortal Kombat: Deception. The game was later released in March 1, 2005 for the GameCube and November 13, 2006 for the PlayStation Portable (under the title "Mortal Kombat: Unchained"), each with bonus characters from previous Mortal Kombat games. A bonus disc came in collector's editions of the PlayStation 2 and Xbox verions, including video biographies and a port of the original Mortal Kombat. The story of Mortal Kombat: Deception takes place right after Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. As the deadly alliance of Quan Chi and Shang Tsung emerge victorious against Raiden's warriors, a new evil, the Dragon King and former emperor of Outworld Onaga, appears to seek the six artifacts (the Kamidogu) that grant him supreme power over all realms. The main protagonist is Shujinko, a warrior with the power to copy other fighter's abilities who was deceived into ressurecting Onaga prior to the main story.

Kermit and friends have agreed to go with Doctor Honeydew so he can attend his late Uncle Petry's will ceremony. The problem is that the house appears evil, and they begin to tremble as they knock on the door. Suddenly, Kermit's nephew Robin passes out from sheer terror as he sees a dark figure. When he awakes, only Doctor Honeydew, Beaker and Pepe are around. Apparently, Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo and the others have been turned into hideous monsters! The surrounding village is slowly withering away and turning completely evil. Now, armed with a special evil absorbing glove and backpack, you must help Robin to eradicate the evil and save his friends. This game is a single-player adventure in which you must guide Robin through the areas to collect evil energy and items before turning his friends back to normal. In each level, you must collect enough evil energy to advance to the next. Muppet tokens and Morph Amulet Pieces are also essential to collect as they allow you to gain certain morphing skills needed to complete the levels. These skills include block pushing, smashing, climbing, swimming and gliding. Once you gain enough evil energy and morphing skills, you'll be able to take on one of your friends as a monster for the boss. Once you defeat them, they will turn back to normal and you'll be one step closer to saving the land. Collect Muppet power-ups to restore your life and gain evil energy. Colored Stars can be found for their evil energy and some of them are locked inside pumpkins, knight helmets, and boxes that you have to break open. Sub-lives allow you to replenish life taken from being hit, while bonus sub-lives allow Robin to gain more life. Bonus Letters open a special chest in the level for an extra Muppet Token, Extra Life tokens are available in glass jars, and coins allow you to unlock gallery images and sounds (if you have an available memory card). The Gallery is accessible through the main menu. It is a collection of Muppet images and sounds. If you defeat levels twice and save your progress, you'll be able to unlock new images. You (Robin) are the only one who can destroy all of the evil and save your friends, because the glove and backpack were specifically created for amphibious DNA (just your luck)!

Myst

Myst

Sony PSP - Released - June 15, 2006

A book written by a potentially paranoid man named Atrus serves as a portal to an otherworldly place, the island of Myst, in this atmospheric adventure game by developer Cyan. By exploring the island, you will eventually stumble upon an assortment of puzzles in the form of intricate contraptions, whose secrets can only be unlocked after discovering evidence of their nature. As you progress in the game, you will find four other books written by Atrus that magically transport you to additional worlds, each offering more interconnected puzzles and clues to the storyline. Myst's look is noteworthy for featuring still images viewed from a first-person perspective, with interaction limited to manipulating a cursor over each static picture.

NBA Ballers: Rebound is a PSP version of the NBA Ballers franchise with features more akin to the PSP, such as utilizing the D-pad for movement as opposed to the console versions using the analog control. Players can also play as top NBA players at the time, such as Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant, on street courts in arcade-style action. Players can compete in various modes such as TV Tournament and a "story mode" called Rags to Riches, where the player can create their own "baller" and bring him up through the ranks, defeating top players of the game and gain notoriety, starting from friendly encounters at local street courts to taking on the big boys in televised events. Players winning these matches will earn money they can use to buy jewellery (better know as "bling") and update their "crib" with more accessories as time passes in the game. The style of play is similar to NBA Jam, with arcade style one-on-one action with insane moves like half-court dunks and complicated alley-oops. Stringing these moves together will build a meter called the "House Meter", filling it will give the player the ability to use a special alley-oop called the "juice house", which will shatter the backboard and destroy the basket, giving the player an automatic win despite the score of the game. Players can also compete against each other using the Ad-Hoc, in one-on-one matches, using the players created "ballers" or unlocked professional players and play in "cribs" designed by the players in the game.

NFL Blitz 2000

NFL Blitz 2000

Sony Playstation - Released - August 24, 1999

The two teams line up seven per side. It's a typical first and 30 on the initial play from scrimmage. The quarterback snaps the ball only to be pummeled well after the play is over. But there's no flag on the field -- he doesn't even expect one. Why would he when there's no men in zebra-striped shirts (referees) anywhere near the playing field? It's just another day on the gridiron with NFL Blitz 2000. Continuing Midway's popular NFL Blitz franchise, this sophomore effort features all of the original's mayhem -- and then some. The unique elements that distinguished the original from "realistic" football games remain intact: fewer players (each with superhuman potential), a faster pace, tougher first down requirements, and bone-crushing, less-than-sportsmanlike (can you say "understatement"?) hits, just to name a few. There are several new features that highlight this turn-of-the-millennium edition. As many as four players (up from two) can choose from more plays than featured in the original, even developing some of their own with the new Play Editor. Audibles can now be called at the line, and several new fields and stadiums are available. A simple tap of the L2 button on offense activates the Blitz Passing feature, allowing players to throw to a receiver identified by a button symbol instead of just aiming at one blinking target as in standard play. Also added to this version, a team achieves "on fire" status when the defense sacks the quarterback twice in a row or the offense completes three straight passes to a single receiver. Just as in Midway's NBA Jam, the awesome speed and power of a team in such as state (including unlimited Turbo meter) can often mean the difference in a game. It takes a great play from the temporarily overmatched other team to extinguish the flames. Keeping consistent with 1999's adjustments to NFL teams, NFL Blitz 2000 replaces the Oilers with the Tennessee Titans and adds the expansion Cleveland Browns. All other 29 teams are included, of course, each featuring players with abilities based upon 1998 statistics. Even highly touted draft picks such as New Orleans' Ricky Williams are included. As with the previous version, three modes of play are available in NFL Blitz 2000. Try to defeat all 31 teams in Arcade Mode or play through an actual season on your way to the Super Bowl in Season Mode. Meanwhile, gather some friends for the Tournament Mode and guide one of the possible eight teams through the brackets to ultimate victory.

Who needs rules? This version of the offensively minded NFL BLITZ is even more fast-paced, action-driven, and penalty-free than its ancestors. Using an amazingly intuitive controller configuration, BLITZ keeps it as simple as possible. It's all about excitement, as you choose between 27 effective offensive plays and nine defensive sets for your NFL franchise. The teams are all here, but reality has flown out the window, as you rip off helmets, throw punches, and dive at kickers. New features include individual stats based on NFL performance, new player animations, updated stadiums, multiplayer options in Season mode, better AI, new rants from the BLITZ announcer, and a cool new soundtrack. The highlight of the additions, however, has to be the Party Games mode, which allows up to four players to compete in crazy football challenges. In "1st and Goal Frenzy," you have four downs to score on your opponent; "Goal Line Stand" reverses the scenario and has you defending for four downs; and "Quarterback Challenge" has you passing at specific targets. Oh, and there's one more thing new cheerleaders.

When he finally transports the fairy back to her home, Pac is given some magic shoes, which will help him get to his own home, where he will be greeted by his family: Ms. Pac-Man, Baby Pac-Man, Chomp Chomp, and Sourpuss. There are sixteen rounds to complete, with four trips each. During each round, he can grab a power pellet, which cause ghosts to turn blue, allowing Pac-Man to eat them for points. He must also make it to the end of each round before time runs out, otherwise a ghost will chase him.

Rampage World Tour

Rampage World Tour

Arcade - Released - January 1, 1997

Rampage World Tour is a video game released in 1997 and is the second game in the Rampage series. Rampage World Tour is a updated version of the classic Rampage. Rampage World Tour starts off at Scumlabs International where three lab technicians, George, Lizzy, and Ralph have mutated in an accident involving toxic waste. George has turned into a gigantic ape, Lizzy a gigantic lizard or dinosaur, and Ralph some sort of gigantic wolf. The three destroy the lab they previously worked at and then embark on a path of destruction encompassing the entire globe. The player chooses one of these three characters and begins destroying buildings, eating civilians, knocking planes out of the sky, and stepping on tanks. The ultimate goal of the game is to rid the world of Scumlabs by traveling to the cities where they are located. Being creatures of such massive size, there are many cities that must be destroyed along the way. Scumlabs and the various militaries make it a priority to destroy you and optionally another player that can play simultaneously. The graphics are worth noting as they are of a unique, colorful "cartoon" flavor. Gameplay includes players climb buildings while punching, kicking, and eating their inhabitants to destroy them. Once all the buildings for a particular stage have been destroyed, the stage is clear and players proceed to the next stage. Players can get many different kinds of power-ups that make them more powerful or restore health.

Sega Dreamcast - Released - October 23, 2000

Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2 is a boxing game for the Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and Game Boy Advance. It is also the sequel to Ready 2 Rumble Boxing. Gameplay in the game is similar to that of the previous game. The more big hits the player land consecutively, letters that spell out "RUMBLE" appear below the player's side of the screen. Letters also appear when the fighter taunts his opponent. Once the word is formed, powerful combo attacks can be activated that will almost definitely knock the opponent down. This time, however, there are three levels of "RUMBLE", which build up one after the other. If the player successfully lands a combo with his RUMBLE Meter full on the third level (where the letters start smoking), the final blow can launch the opponent clear out of the ring, giving the player an instant victory.

Red Card 2003

Red Card 2003

Microsoft Xbox - Released - June 24, 2002

Red Card 2003 is Midway's soccer title in its extreme sports series. The gameplay is comparable to NFL Blitz or NHL Hitz. Players choose from one of 32 international teams and duke it out in the most realistic of Midway's 2003 extreme sports games. This game features full size teams and plays much like a real soccer title until you dropkick one of your opponents to the ground. It doesn't go all out like most of Midway's hard-hitting games, but it definitely stands closer to Midway's extreme sports games than a traditional simulation.

Players must not only confront the spirits of executed inmates while advancing through the game's nine levels, but also fellow criminals on death row, prison guards, and other characters. The 12 supernatural creatures in the game were designed by the legendary Stan Winston, best known for his Academy Award-winning work in Aliens, Jurassic Park, and A.I. Players are cast in the role of a troubled inmate named Torque, who has been condemned to death for a crime he may or may not have committed. When the spirits of the prison inadvertently free him from captivity, Torque begins a grueling quest for survival as he uncovers the clues to make sense of his bewildering past. To battle his grotesque foes, Torque can find and use ten different weapons, ranging from revolvers to Tommy guns. The protagonist also hides a dark secret that allows him to transform into a superhuman creature when pushed too far, at which point he can unleash his pent-up rage for a limited time. Levels are set within prison walls as well as outdoor surroundings, as enemies attack from jail cells, torture chambers, underneath the ground, from behind trees, and more.
