Armalyte

Windows - Released - April 30, 2010

In the Delta region of space, the remnants of a long forgotten war remain - far beyond what those in the Terran system were used to. This technology is potentially valuable, but retrieving it from the 8 sectors will involve a lot of blasting and dodging. Armalyte is a left-to-right horizontally-scrolling shooter and was marketed as the sequel to Delta, even though that one was done by different developers. Extra weapons are gained by shooting crystals and then collecting the resultant pod. Weapons on offer including lasers firing vertically and outwardly, as well as faster weaponry recharging. Weapons upgrades are not lost when dying, but they are taken away at the start of a new level, except for the batteries and the generators that are reduced one level above the initial one, if applicable. There are eight levels and a boss at the end of each one, with smaller bosses in the mid sections. Some parts of the scenery can also be lethal to the ship. The craft is accompanied by a computer-controlled drone with the same capabilities and in the two-player mode it is replaced by a regular ship. The later PC version is done by a different team but officially approved by the owners of the IP. It has the same gameplay, but updated graphics, animation, music and sound effects.

Guns 'n' Ghosts

Guns 'n' Ghosts

Commodore 64 - Homebrew - 2013

In Guns 'n' Ghosts, the player takes the role of the ghost hunters Trev and Georg. The goal is to gun down as many supernatural foes, e.g. demons and skeletons, as possible for a high score. There are 72 one-screen levels with numerous platforms to jump on - obviously it is a bad idea to touch enemies. Both player characters play differently: Georg has a shotgun which needs to reloaded regularly and has a long range while Trev has an unlimited psychic attack with short range. Trev's attack is beam-like. Killed enemies may drop power ups which reward advantages when picked up: more ammo capacity for Georg's shotgun, instant kill shots, more attack power for Trev, weapon speed up, an extra life or temporary invincibility. Players can also fight together in co-op; including the option to play with two Trev or two Georg characters. There is also a mode where enemies can only be killed by Georg while Trev holds the monster with his psychic attack. The game can be played with either music or sound effects.

MW Ultra

MW Ultra

Commodore 64 - Homebrew - August 4, 2020

MW ULTRA is a reinterpretation of the original Metal Warrior game released in 1999 that sees you take control of Ian as he unravels a conspiracy taking place around him and inside his mind. Ian will have to use his wits and his skills to survive against street gangs, highly trained soldiers, wild animals, robot drones and much more as you navigate your way though many different environments in order to uncover the truth to who he really is. MW ULTRA is a great title that features interactive action adventure gameplay all within the confines of an engrossing story environment. In asking him what inspired him to reboot the Metal Warrior Series after its long hiatus, Lasse reveals: “Each of the original MW games had been made in an ad-hoc manner based on the ideas I had at the moment, both for story and gameplay. Combined with that I was still only learning programming, game design and storytelling, particularly with the first game, this left the feeling that things could have been done better.” Indeed it is perhaps a little known fact that Lasse experimented to reboot the franchise for the Game Boy Advance and PC but these turned out to be failed attempts that fizzled out to nothing. It wasn’t until a co-worker (Marja Kuipers) began writing fan fiction based on Lasse’s trilogy of novels that featured Metal Warrior characters that firmly planted the seed that a reboot of the series would be warranted in an expanded story setting.

Realms of Quest III

Realms of Quest III

Commodore VIC-20 - Homebrew - 2009

Realms of Quest III is an RPG for the VIC-20. It has been a thousand years since the great bards had written the epic poem telling the legend of a hero who had slain the demon wizard, Nikaedor. The hero, though mortally wounded, shouted a final cry of victory: “Hark! The Evil Wizard and his Eternal Orb no longer hold dominion over this land”. And now, bandits, orcs, highwaymen and all sorts of vile creatures have gotten bolder. Where they roamed before as mere nuisance, they now dare more often, and even well armed escorts are no longer safe from their attacks. They wander from their wilderness and abandoned ruins of the Land of Rivar to threaten cities within its borders. Sanctuary can no longer be guaranteed. Even dragons have begun to appear, reducing whole villages to ash. The King sent forth his finest on a scouting mission to the old ruins of Nikaedor's lair; warriors of unyielding strength and magic wielders of cunning sorcery. After the passing of several moons, their bodies floated in the moat of his great castle. A journal was retrieved from their watery grave. The final entry petrified those with ears to hear it, “Nikaedor has returned. Death to those who fail to pay tribute on this day and forever. Hail Nikaedor!” The player creates a party of 6 characters in the village surrounding the King's castle. Each character randomly roles 6 attributes: strength, dexterity, intelligence, constitution, wisdom, and charisma, and can pick from 8 races, which allows the character to choose a class. Items and armour can be purchased at the local weapon shop, injured characters healed at the inn, and deceased characters resurrected at the temple. The player can then explore the overland by foot or purchase a boat to sail the seas. As the party explores the land they also encounter enemy parties. The party can choose to fight, run from, or greet the enemies they meet, and if engaged in combat, each character chooses to fight or cast spells. Enemies are graphically displayed on the screen. When entering dungeons, game play changes to a first person perspective, where the player must exploring twisting passageways and doors to gather treasure and items.

But many men were not content, and they gathered their strength and overturned their master, and all those who were under his will in turn were imprisoned in endless dungeons.
