Bank Buster

Bank Buster

Atari ST - 1988

The only way to break into a well-stocked bank is to head underground, and smash your way through layer after layer of earth. This makes for a game influenced by Breakout, but with many subtleties of its own. You have full control over the bat, able to move up and down as well as left and right. The latter can be useful as only part of the bottom of the screen actually results in the ball going out of play - a wall protects much of the floor. There are inbuilt trees which can't be played through, and dynamite sticks which can clear large sections of earthing at a time.

Battle Chopper

Battle Chopper

Commodore 64 - Released - 1987

Battle Chopper is a helicopter shooter where the aim is to destroy as many tanks on the ground as you can before you are destroyed. The screen is split into three parts with the main screen showing you looking at your helicopter from behind at a 3rd person perspective flying into the screen showing any tanks on the ground. Another part shows your damage status and score, and finally the third part is where you play and control the game. This part is a radar and it shows the tanks coming down the screen and you control two bars up, down, left or right, and where the bars meet is where your weapon will hit. The tanks will fire missiles upwards at you and you can be hit three times before it is game and this is shown by your helicopter changing colour in your damage status. You have two weapons and they are cannon and missile and you can switch between either.

Hype

Hype

Microsoft MSX - Released - 1987

A very, very fast vertical shoot'em up game. The goal is to destroy the various hordes of enemies in space using the simple or special shots that are picked up. The game is not separated by levels or big bosses, it is played straight from the beginning until all lives run out, accompanied by fast-paced music.

Indy 500

Indy 500

Microsoft MSX - Released - 1987

The object of the game is to drive the 12 laps as fast as you can. Pay attention to the condition of your tires and to the fuel consumption. Tyres will wear out if you are touching the red and white chequered side of the road. At higher speed you will consume more fuel. In the pit you can change tyres and refuel.

Leather Skirts

Microsoft MSX2 - Released - 1987

The game is played in a maze in which leather skirts must be collected. In the maze you will also find restaurants, bars and you can visit the red-light district. All in all, promising, but we were surprised when it turned out that overview of the maze image remains with also the locations where the above mentioned places can be found. We also had the game played out within half an hour because you simply have to follow the lines on the overview map. Reach one of the locations, you will get one nice picture to see. The graphics are smooth but the sound is almost completely missing as well as music. The subtitle ‘For adults only’ doesn't mean much either; the ladies are almost completely dressed.

Life in the Fast Lane

Life in the Fast Lane

Microsoft MSX - Released - 1987

Life in the Fast Lane can best be described as a cross between Trailblazer, for its bouncy ball on a chequered path action, and Elektraglide for its twisty road and futuristic enemies and obstacles. Your task is simple: Travel as far as you can on the road inside your rolling sphere. There are obstacles in the road that you must avoid, either by going to the left or right or by jumping over them. Unlike Trailblazer, you can jump a whole lot, even to the point of virtually flying above the level. Not even then are you safe, though, since airplanes will attack you in the sky. The ground has holes in it. If you miscalculate a leap, and fall into a black hole, you are dropped into something very much like Tempest, with your sphere moving across the outer edge of a space tunnel, shooting at the things that come out of it. If you fall into a water-filled hole, you fall through the road and find that it runs above a river. Here, you are attacked by fish, but luckily you can shoot back at them (something you cannot do on the ground). The next time there is a whole in the ground, you have a chance to resurface. All the while, you must make sure not to expend your jumping and shooting power bars, or you will be left vulnerable.

Police Academy II

Police Academy II

Commodore 64 - Released - December 21, 1987

Playing off the success of the movie franchise but not really being related to the movie, this is a set of minigames, a catch'em game where you catch bullets by blocking them with guns, a crosshairs pop-up shooter where you must only shoot the people who aren't police holding guns, with some accuracy target shooting thrown in for good measure. Then a mini game where you only catch the golden ammunition to determine how many shots you get back in the crosshairs shooter. The difficulty ramps up when characters you don't suspect draw guns on you and some other novel changes. Published in Italy in the Alga Soft 1988 n.2a compilation.
