Aegis of Earth: Protonovus Assault

Sony Playstation 3 - Released - April 22, 2016

Aegis of Earth is set 50 years after a deadly event known as the “Silent Apocalypse”. This catastrophic event brought forth various creatures hellbent on destroying humanity. Accompanying the arrival of the creatures was a new element called the "Altenite", which stands as earth's last hope at survival. In the time prior to the game's beginnings, the surviving humans have built fortified cities which have since protected them from various assaults. However, with the approaching “Altered States” and continuous monster attacks, the inhabitants must prepare while continuing to expand and defend their cities. Players take control of various urban areas, collecting taxes from residents, purchasing equipment, allocating resources and setting up the battlefield with units and artillery to protect the metropolis from the oncoming invasion. Once the battle has begun, waves of enemies will approach, with the player's responsibility being to use the weapons placed in the prior planning stage to defend their city.

Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed

Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed

Sony Playstation 3 - Released - November 7, 2013

Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed is a 3D fighting brawler set in a modern day version of Japan's Akihabara district in Tokyo. It is the sequel to the 2011 PSP game Akiba's Trip. The protagonist is called Nanashi or 'Nameless', but this can be changed before starting the game. He is an otaku-type high school student who is on his way to a job interview. He does not remember what happens next, but he ends up strapped on an operating table where he is told that just like many others he has signed a contract with the Magaimono organization. This contract allowed them to turn him into a synthister, a vampire-like superhuman that feeds off other people's life energy. He needs to absorb the energy for Magaimono, but he is quickly rescued by a girl called Shizuku Tokikaze. She is a friendly synthister and her blood allows the protagonist to withstand his task and defend Akihabara instead. He becomes a hunter to defeat the synthisters who prey on regular humans. Along with a band of freedom fighters Nanashi gets to roam the streets of Akihabara with over 100 shops modeled after the real life ones. Fights are done with brawling beat 'em up gameplay against one or more opponents in a small environment. Just like the protagonist himself the synthisters are sensitive to sunlight, so he needs to weaken the durability of their clothing with attacks until a part starts to blink and then there is an opportunity to tear off one or multiple parts of their clothing through a stripping mechanic, exposing them to sunlight which kills them. When multiple parts blink it is possible to perform chain strips. Rather than being a hentai title, the game presents the undressing in a quirky manner and does not contain full nudity. In the fighting system it is possible to attack using multiple stances and perform duo attacks with allies. Attacks are based on targeting the head and the upper and lower body. They can be strung together to form combos and there are many types of weapons, that can be upgraded multiple times, each with their own attacks, strengths and weaknesses. The character is also able to jump, avoid incoming attacks and counter blocks with special moves that break them. Next to the fights a large amount of time is spent exploring the environment and completing missions to earn money. There are also many NPCs to talk to. Conversations often have dialogue trees and the answers not only affect the fights with synthisters, but also the relationships with the male and female cast of characters who can join or leave the protagonist's, with the option to pursue one of four love interests with their own endgame. A lot of communication is accessible through a smartphone, for instance to receive e-mails, check the Pitter social network, access the map or use the camera to take shots. Because of the large environment it is possible to fast travel between locations. The game contains many shops where items, weapons, clothing and food can be bought and sold. The character's main characteristics are based around an attack and defense rating, as well as a large amount of customization for weapons and different types of clothing items that influence his head and upper and lower body durability during fights.

Octopath Traveler II

Octopath Traveler II

Windows - Released - February 24, 2023

Octopath Traveler II is a role-playing video game developed by Square Enix and Acquire and published by Square Enix. It is a sequel to Octopath Traveler (2018), and the third entry in the series after the prequel mobile game Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent (2020), though it features a new cast of characters and setting separate from prior games. It was released worldwide on February 24, 2023, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Windows; it is the first Octopath game released on PlayStation platforms. Similar to the first Octopath Traveler, the game plays as a traditional JRPG. The player moves between eight separate characters, each with their own purpose for traversing the game world. Once again, each character has their own "path action" - a particular means for the player to have the respective character interact with non-player characters in the game world, often with the goal of getting reward items or characters to fight in support of their cause. New to the sequel is there being distinct "daytime" and nighttime" segments of gameplay, with path actions being different depending on the time of day. The game retains the turn-based battle system of the first game as well, including the "break" and "boost" systems. Every enemy has a number of hidden "weakness" attributes related to being weak to particular weapons or elements. Once discovered, an indicator is shown onscreen, and if it is exploited enough times, a "break" occurs, temporarily weakening the enemy. Every turn, "boost points" are accumulated, which can be used for extra moves in future turns. New to the battle system are "Latent Powers", special abilities unique to a given character which recharge when taking damage or breaking the enemy. While Octopath Traveler II retains the same structure of following eight separate character's stories throughout the game, it follows eight new characters in a new setting separate from the prior games. It takes place in the world of Solistia, a setting that is more modern than the prior game's medieval setting, which is presented more like something from the nineteenth or twentieth centuries. For instance, the steam engine is pioneered during the game's events. The game's main cast includes Agnea Bristarni, a dancer who sets out to follow in her mother's footsteps and become a star; Partitio Yellowil, a merchant who seeks to end poverty; Hikari Ku, a warrior prince who sets out to reclaim the throne of his kingdom and usher in an age of peace; Osvald V. Vanstein, a scholar who escapes from prison to kill the man who framed him for murdering his family; Throné Anguis, a thief trying to leave her assassins' guild by taking keys from its leaders; Temenos Mistral, a cleric attempting to solve the mystery of his archbishop's murder; Castti Florenz, an apothecary with retrograde amnesia trying to discover her past; and Ochette, a hunter, who needs to capture three legendary beasts to stop a prophesized calamity. Each character has between four and five story chapters focused solely on themselves, and two "Crossed Paths" chapters, a new feature in which two travelers collaborate on a goal. In the course of each character's story, players become aware of a shadowy organisation called the Moonshade Order, which worships the dark god Vide the Wicked, and is attempting to bring about eternal night based on Vide's teachings. After all travelers' stories have been completed, an epilogue becomes available in which the Order's plans come to fruition and Vide is resurrected, only to be thwarted by the travelers. If an optional side story is completed, players can also fight Galdera the Fallen, the final boss of the original Octopath Traveler, as a superboss.

Sony Playstation - Released - November 11, 1999

Tenchu: Shinobi Hyakusen is an expansion pack for Tenchu. It was released on November 11, 1999 for the PlayStation. It is a standalone expansion, meaning it does not require the disc for the main game. The game is based on the levels created by the users of Shinobi Gaisen. Acquire held a competition for these levels, and the best one hundred missions were collected, and ultimately formed Tenchu: Shinobi Hyakusen. There are also secret missions to unlock. The whole game consists of 122 missions. The theme of each mission focuses on a chosen objective. Some missions emphasise elimination, while others focus on assassination, finding a peculiar flower or protecting Princess Kiku along the way. The game fundamentals and controls remained unchanged. However, missions in Shinobi Hyakusen are not bound together by any storyline. Playing through the missions earns the player FMV and other promotional videos, beta test captures, artwork and other behind-the-scenes material otherwise not accessible.

Samurai Dou Portable

Samurai Dou Portable

Sony PSP - Released - September 18, 2008

As in the original game, Way of the Samurai Portable tells the story of a wandering samurai who becomes drawn into a vicious power struggle between three opposing factions, each trying to seize control of a small region known as Rokketsu Pass. By interacting with members of each faction, the player can directly influence the structure of the story, and the game's overall length, as they work towards one of six endings. At the game's core is a complex sword-fighting system, where stance, blade type/condition, and movement all play an equal part. Though primarily an action game, Way of the Samurai is as much about negotiation and politics, as it is about sword duels. Though more or less a direct port of the PS2 original, some changes have been made to the control scheme, to facilitate the move to a new platform, while a moderate reduction in graphic fidelity is noticeable when the two versions are compared. No significant additions or changes have been made to in-game content.

The daimyou issue various missions such as assassinating a certain target, protecting a shipping crate with supplies, freeing captive peasants, or stealing resources. Once a mission is selected, players are dropped into a map filled with enemies and treasures to collect. They must utilize stealth and a variety of skills such as a grapple hook, silent assassinations, counter attacks, etc., in order to complete their objective. Once they level up, they can put attribute points into max health, attack, defense, an extended special attack meter that allows for the Zankoku attack (a teleporting silent kill), and a longer grapple hook. Along the way, players will encounter various bosses, such as enemy ninja clan leaders, and eventually the other daimyou themselves. Players can utilize items to weaken their foes or try to lure them into a silent kill, allowing for a wide variety of play-styles.

Shinobido: Way of the Ninja

Sony Playstation 2 - Released - November 10, 2005

Shinobido Imashime is a ninja game, resembling Tenchu at first glance. You play as a black-clad ninja called Gou, also known as The Raven. Gou has lost his memory, and he's not sure why he's fighting. Providing some clue to his exploits are Zaji, a ninja who wears an eye patch, and a mysterious "kunoichi" female ninja, whose name has not been revealed. Both Gou and Zaji have the same emblem on their belt, with the female ninja having a similar shape tattooed on her left leg. Real physics seems to be the big selling point for this game. The game uses a real physics engine which handles the movement of all objects, promising added realism. You'll be able to stack up objects in order to form a stepping ground for scaling a tall wall. Kill an enemy, and when he falls, his position will reflect the shape of the ground beneath him, even if that means hanging over a ledge and slowly falling off.

Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins

Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins

Sony Playstation - Released - August 15, 2000

With the threat of civil war at an all-time high and bloodthirsty warlords in pursuit of territory and regional recognition, Japan desperately needs an intervention -- a group of heroes that will band together and save the once peaceful land. When desperation sets in, the common man looks to the House of Gohda; Lord Gohda Matsunoshin enlists the services of deadly, shadow warriors known as the Azuma Ninja in times of dire need. Matsunoshin has called upon three young warriors: Rikimaru, Ayame and Tatsumaru; the aforementioned characters, excluding the latter, were called upon in Tenchu: Stealth Assassins. Whereas Rikimaru is a tranquil, ardent ninja, the dagger wielding Ayame has a rebellious attitude -- she's also the youngest of the three. With exceptional sword abilities and having been trained as a future leader of the Azuma Ninja, Tatsumaru is the most prominent of the three. Together, they'll not only have to save the House of Gohda from an unparalleled evil, the young ninjas must improve their stealth and further develop their skills. Developed by Acquire, Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins is a prequel to Tenchu: Stealth Assassins; the events found within this game happened before those in the original. Retaining the third-person 3D viewpoint and stealth tactics, this prequel features over 21 new techniques including devastating deathblows and weapon combinations. Depending on which character you choose will determine your fighting style as each comes with his or her own unique weapons. Unlike the original, characters can now swim through trenches and other bodies of water. Additionally, players now have the option of dragging dead corpses into secluded areas; if someone sees a dead body, they're going to know something's wrong and begin combing the area for clues. There are 29 unique missions involving the assassination of certain warlords, the protection of innocents and the elimination of unwanted troops. While you could run out in the open, the point behind this series is to remain undetected and silently slay the given targets. This involves propelling yourself onto rooftops and trees with a grappling hook and quietly sliding around walls while focusing on the surrounding environment. Finishing missions without being seen will earn you higher rankings and secret goodies; if your only concern is to finish the game, feel free to rush through each level. Rankings are as follows: stealth kills are 20 points and normal kills are five points with 150 and 30 point deductions coming in the form of murdering an innocent and being spotted; if you remain unseen throughout an entire level, you're awarded 300 points. In addition to your characters' default weapons, you'll have access to a wide variety of Azuma Ninja weapons and items including flaming arrows, mines, colored rice used for navigational purposes, poison rice, throwing stars and healing potions. Once you've been detected by an enemy, use the leaves of stealth to disorient him; after the effect wears off, your character will be positioned behind the enemy, waiting to cut his throat or snap his neck. Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins also includes a Mission Editor that allows to create your very own mission objectives and 3D worlds. After giving the mission a name and objective, you can utilize the terrain or character editor and begin constructing a level; building either a dojo or village-type level, you'll have access to textures and prefabricated items found within the actual game. Although the developers denied players full use of the game's engine editor (there are no backgrounds in custom made scenarios), it allows you to adjust terrain heights, place trees and assorted items and set patrolling paths for the enemy forces you put into the map.
