Amstrad CPC - Released - 1988

The 10 Computer Hits series rolls on with this, its penultimate release. By this point a number of software houses were releasing their own back catalogue collections making it harder for Beau Jolly to scoop up cheap licences to repackage the games in these packs. Games included were: * Bride of Frankenstein (39 Steps) * Spindizzy (Electric Dreams) * Pulsator (Martech Games) * Sacred Armour of Antiriad (Palace Software) * Revolution (Vortex) * Triaxos (39 Steps) * Deactivators (Reaktor) * Uchi Mata (Martech Games) * City Slicker (Hewson Consultants) * Starquake (Bubble Bus Software) * Elektra Glide (English Software) * Dandy (Electric Dreams)

You also choose a car and set up the skills for your two drivers; you can distribute points between Skill, Resistance and Mechanics, and choose the driver's favorite part of the race. Atmospheric conditions change throughout the race: sometimes the weather will be clear, sometimes you'll have to drive through rain or mist. During the race, your car will sometimes lose a wheel or need other repairs. If this happens, you'll lose a couple of minutes repairing it - as long as you have the appropriate spare part; if you don't have one, it's game over!

18 Wheeler: American Pro Trucker

Sega Dreamcast - Released - May 25, 2001

The main purpose of the game is to make it to the finish line with the truck's cargo. Players are given a set amount of time, but can ram into special vans that will add three seconds to the timer. There are several characters to choose from, each with a unique truck and attributes. The game starts out in Key West and players travel across the United States, ending in San Francisco. After Stage 1, the game gives the player a choice of trailer. One trailer is harder to haul, but provides a bigger payoff while the other choice is easier to haul but provides a smaller payoff. Money is deducted from the total when the trailer is hit. Players can sound the truck's horn to make other cars on the road yield and slipstream behind large vehicles to gain a momentary speed boost. In addition to the time limit, players also compete with the "Lizard Tail", a rival trucker. Crossing the finish line before the Lizard Tail yields additional money. In between levels, players can park the truck in a mini game to earn more cash.

187: Ride or Die

Microsoft Xbox - Released - August 23, 2005

In order to become "top dog" of the game the player must race and defeat opponents through a variety of different stages all set in Los Angeles's infamous South Central region. The game's title comes from two phrases common in the subculture. 187 is the California Penal Code section that defines murder. It has come into general use among gangs in the United States as a synonym for murder, and this usage has passed into popular culture via gangsta rap. "Ride or die" is a combination of the phrases "ride it out" and "die trying", meaning one is willing to do anything even if it involves personal risk. If playing with another player, one can be the driver and the other can be the shooter. This can be done in the story and online mode. There are a variety of modes available to the player.

Despite the multicart's claim, only 42 games are actually included. The menu system is unorthodox, with the first 15 games on the first page leading to the other pages which can be accessed by pressing the Select button. Like some Supervision multicarts, the menu music is taken from Booby Kids. The graphics are taken from the Magic Jewelry hack that's included among the games. Unlike most multicarts where the repeats have random letters added on to the end, this multicart uses alternate names such as Luigi Bros and Zero Wing. (The latter of which is not the Mega Drive game of the same name) The memory is likely all stored in PRG format, as the games take about 3 seconds to load when picked.

In 1995, players could even take part in a nationwide contest (an option still available in the game): completing rally-style timed rounds would result in a password that players needed to submit as proof of their results.

2 in 1: V-Rally 3+Stuntman

2 in 1: V-Rally 3+Stuntman

Nintendo Game Boy Advance - Released - June 23, 2005

V-Rally 3 for the Game Boy Advance adapts the console game of the same name to the handheld platform, offering its own selection of cars, tracks, modes and a platform-appropriate graphics engine. The main game mode is V-Rally Mode. It takes players through a rally championship over seven different countries, with each country's course consisting of distinct stages. Stages are taken on in groups of two, allowing for changing of car setup and repairs after every pair. Car setup options include a choice of tires (appropriate to road and weather conditions) as well as suspension, steering, brakes and gearbox. Bumping into the roadside during a race damages the car, with body, suspension, brakes, steering and turbos getting individual damage ratings. The repairs must be possible to be carried out within a time window or there is no choice but to drive on with the damage. The game's second major mode is called V-Rally Cross and offers traditional circuit racing on five different tracks. Only one is available from the start, the others have to be unlocked by winning on the earlier tracks. Races are against three opponents and consist of two rounds of three laps each, one in forward, one in reverse direction. Performing well in the first round fills a boost meter that can be utilized in the second. Time Trial mode allows single runs utilizing cars and tracks unlocked in the other modes. Multiplayer is available via the link cable and offers two-player versions of V-Rally Cross and Time Trial. You play a stuntman who has the task of completing some difficult and challenging stunts for a film director. Get it right and he'll ask you on for another project, and pay you big time. Get it wrong, and it's time for a career change. Apart from the Movie Making mode, Precision Tests will have you completing courses of varying difficulty, where you'll have to drive forward and reverse, launch off of jumps, dodge through posts and then park inside a zone before time runs out. In Jump Tests, you'll be out to grab letters while jumping off of platforms to catch them while airborne. You can also play against a friend in the various multiplayer modes to see who has the best control over their car.

3D Out Run

3D Out Run

Nintendo 3DS - Released - March 12, 2015

3D third-person racing game. The player controls a car, a Ferrari Testarossa Spider, from a rear third-person perspective. In contrast to other third-person racing games at the time where the camera is some distance above the horizon to see into the distance, Out Run places the camera near the ground, directly behind the car, simulating a Ferrari driver's perspective view and limiting the player's view into the distance. The road also curves and dips, which, combined with the low perspective, increases the challenge by making it difficult to see what is on the other side of a hill. The player must race to the end of each stage as fast as possible against a time limit while avoiding traffic. At the end of each stage, the player is presented with a fork in the road where the player must choose one of two stages. The left route presents an easier stage, while the right offers a greater challenge. Passing through checkpoints awards the player with extra time. Once the timer reaches zero or the player completes the race, the game ends. In addition to the nonlinear gameplay, Out Run also offered the choice of music to listen to while driving, represented as radio stations.

Commodore 64 - Released - 1988

Published in COMPUTE!'s Gazette 1988/04 (Issue #58). The year is 1992. Since the days of the Stanley Steamer, engineers have been trying to create the ultimate automobile. Early this year, such a car was finally created, with durability, efficiency, control and SPEED. Cynics have doubts about the automobile's true performance, though, so the car must be entered in a race to demonstrate its technological superiority. A careful survey of the population has shown that you are the only person on the planet who can push this car to its limits, so you will drive in the big race. The race is held in a large, flat valley with a circular track marked by poles. At the top of the screen, you'll see displays for the time remaining for each lap and the number of laps completed. When the game begins, there are 46 seconds on the clock. With each lap, the timer is reset with three seconds less than the previous lap. The game's goal is to complete each lap in the time given and to travel as far as possible before time runs out.

Without using boost power-ups, the player has no chance of winning a race.

4x4 Hummer is a racing game where the player can use one of ten licensed off-road vehicles by General Motors. The heart of the game is the career mode where the player has to drive successfully in different races. With the earned price money he can buy new equipment for his car. Besides the usual round courses the game also features off-road races in open terrain where the player has to orientate himself and challenges where every irregularity, e.g. knocking down the course boundaries or breaking for too long, results in a loss of points.
